The tagliere misto we ordered had meats and cheeses, fresh fruits, jams, oils... and everything was absolutely incredible! We also ordered a slice of the torta di mela (apple cake) for dessert, which was also so delicious! The staff was so friendly and welcoming. They spoke to us in Italian, and even played us songs by Jovanotti when we asked! I was really missing Italy, and this restaurant made me feel like I was back there again! Claudia hosted my company holiday luncheon in December and we had a fantastic time! We arranged the afternoon to have a cooking class then lunch which worked out great. Claudia taught us how to make gnocchi and each member of the group had a chance to roll out the dough and cut the pieces (about 20 people) all while Claudia was teaching us traditional Italian cooking. We then sat down to enjoy our lunch which included our creation and addition plates. Everything was delicious and we were beyond full when we left! A meal and day of this caliber would cost a fortune in the city, but cost is extremely reasonable and she is willing to work with your budget and dietary restrictions. This was my first time trying this restaurant with my friend. Overall food was pretty good. I could tell they use fresh ingredients. Unfortunately one of our pasta dish was cooked little uneven and it was little too hard to chew. When we mentioned it to the waiter, he explained to me that their pasta is made from scratch so it could be little more al dente than the ones from boxes. Got it! But I still wish it was cooked little bit more evenly so I could've enjoyed its yummy sauce. When we were leaving the restaurant, instead of simply saying "thank you and good night" the owner tried to lecture us about their pasta AGAIN and said we let the food sit on the table too long and that's why the pasta got hard. I don't know what was her intention was but I felt like we got scolded for not eating pasta quicker. Maybe we shouldn't have mentioned about the pasta? really 3 1/2 stars Had a pleasant dinner but on reflection would not return. The burrata is delicious but comes bare and bland, I asked for balsamic and it was transformed it. The lentil soup is good but even my 5 yr old asked for seasoning. We got the scallop appetizer which was cooked perfectly but again lacked seasoning. The pasta with tuna was wonderful. The texture and bite of the linguine was unique and crave worthy. Sauce was excellent and the tuna is excellent quality. The salmon and breadcrumbs dish was a total miss. Bland and slightly overcooked salmon and ordinary tossed salad was nothing special. I understand the fresh ingredients and pasta made in-house is supposed to be impressive but unfortunately all I could think about was how underwhelmingly bland the dish was, my sister had ordered the salmon medium rare and it came out well done. if you're going to charge 25+ for a small filet of salmon the cook should at least be close to what's requested.. service was good and friendly. maybe I had come on an off day, but that's unfortunate because the sentiment of myself and the people I was with is, this is certainly not worth coming back for at the price they are charging. This is certainly a gem in the middle of Ridgewood. It's a BYOB and the food is excellent. Unfortunately they have changed their menu and no longer offer the amazing Pinze(pizza) - which is several levels above the average pizza. My two friends got small portions of pasta at a fairly reasonable price,and I had the lasagne. They should up their game by offering all their old tried and true dishes and put a tablecloth on the table. if you are going to charge higher prices. Nothing had one iota of flavor. Everything was so bland, that I could have been eating the cold dry bread that is placed on all the empty tables. The meatloaf was bland and boring. The fish tasted as if it was boiled in water, no salt, no wine, no lemon flavor nothing, nada, zip. Even though there was lemon slices, they didn't add even the tinest bit of anything. The pasta Carbonara also had no flavor. There was no evidence that they added salt to the pasta or the water. The pasta was slightly over cooked and the sauce was slightly undercooked (which was a little gross) and aside from the delicious smattering of pancetta, this to was a waste of space. There were two young servers who not once checked on us to see how we were enjoying the meal and not once expressed surprise or dismay that we ate only a few bites of everything. I asked the young man for the check and he started clearing the table. I said could you clear the table after you get our check? He just smiled and kept stacking dishes. I gave two stars instead of one because of the roasted peppers, our vegetable of choice. They were so outrageously flavorful, that I saw a small glimpse that the cook can cook, unfortunately we saw no other evidence. read more

After reading the reviews and checking out the menu, we were sorely disappointed by what we received. Unfortunately this seems to be the case with most of the restaurants we've sampled in Ridgewood, but that's a larger issue for two foodies from the Princeton area who expected a lot better after relocating to Bergen County. We live quite close to the restaurant and decided to have take-out. We ordered the parmigiana di melanzane (eggplant parm) and salmon croccante, both served with a salad. For $16 and $20 respectively, we got a lonely, oily chunk of eggplant parm and a despondent chunk of salmon, along with some mixed-greens-from-a-box served in separate containers on the side. In other words, there was no accompaniment to the chunks of main dish that obviously came from a large, catering tray full of food. At these prices, I expected more. Perhaps some veggies or potatoes? Essentially the meal felt like a rip-off and the food was just so-so. read more

Well the week I went I ordered fettuccine alfredo. My wife ordered ravioli. The ravioli was very good but my fettuccine was awful. I had to return it. The waitress never told my the cheese is imported and it is very salty!! They did take it off the bill. I won't go back. Don't know what the hype was all about. read more

Last night we had dinner again at Scratch.. and chef Claudia, always comes up with some of the best dishes. My wife had the crostoni for appetizer and I had the cheese and salumi taglieri everything was so delicious. For main course i had the pasta carbonara it reminded me of being in Rome it was so delicious and cooked to perfection. My wife had the Branzino it was very tasteful and cooked to perfection it had all the right ingredients.. this is our 6th time at this restaurant and every time is great!! With prosciutto that are cheaper and tastier than the Whole Food's in town, and their baby sized mozzarella cheese (forgive me as I do not recall the actual term--bocochinni), this place is a clear winner. Went in excited for lunch after recommendation from a friend. I had high hopes but the overall experience was "meh". The interior is very white but still cute. The server took time to take our order but the restaurant was jam packed so I am ok to cut her some slack. She was overall pleasant. The food was where there was nothing to go lala about. We prosciutto ham with cheese. The meat was good but the overall dish didn't do it for us. The cheese was too much and average tasting and the salad underneath felt unnecessary and wilted under heat. My husband ordered pasta in tomato sauce with basil and I went for the meatloaf. Both were very ordinary. Not bad but nothing to rave about. We tried the dessert - fig cake with chocolate. Again it was just ok. I have experienced far better Italian fare and don't think will come back. read more

This place is a must. It's not just about the food, which is absolutely delicious, but the entire dining experience. You can't help but feel like you've been invited into Claudia and Roberto's home and enjoying the product of secret family recipes. I was visiting from Chicago and my best friend brought me here. MAKE RESERVATIONS IN ADVANCE. We were lucky enough to nab 2 seats on a Saturday evening. And by nab I mean my friend called twice earlier Saturday afternoon, and I called once more while we were headed to a different restaurant. My friend hyped up From Scratch so much I just had to try asking for a table one more time, and as luck would have it they had an opening at the bar. If you are able to, sit at the bar. At the bar you'll be joined by Roberto and learn of his warm heart and if you're lucky he'll introduce you to his wife/chef, Claudia. The dynamic of their relationship is a wonderful one. You know that she's the boss, and Roberto knows it too. Super cute. And oh yeah, THE FOOD! Having vacationed in Rome last year, I can honestly say this is as close as I can get to the same dining experience short of crossing the ocean. I could have left having only had their bread and olive oil and still come away with the same high regards. That. Olive. Oil. SO GOOD. They sell bottles of them and I'd advise you to pick one up. For appetizer we had mozzarella di bufala wrapped in grilled zucchini on a bed of arugula. Delicious! For entrees, I had Paccheri Alla Gricia and my friend had Spaghetti Cacio e Pepe. Both dishes were simple yet SO flavorful. For dessert I had one of their Crispy Rose Cookies, ate it, got one more, then took 5 to-go (true story). I was here a few weeks ago with my boyfriend for our anniversary dinner. This place is very quaint and small. The people are all very friendly. I have eaten a pasta dish and cheese plate here before and loved it, so I was expecting the same this time. However, I was disappointed. For an app I had the burrata. Amazing. For an entree my boyfriend had the salmon. It was served in aluminum foil, poached, and covered in Kalamata olives. I love olives but these were covering the entire piece of fish. I had swordfish that was stuffed with breadcrumbs and raisins. It was very dry and lacked any kind of flavor. Also, each entree had a Salad of radicchio with no dressing whatsoever. So I was eating bitter greens and dry flavorless fish. I want to go back and try something else with hopes I'll be given something better next time. read more

Claudia even made a cake especially for us, for my sister's bday, keeping in mind her allergies. The food was remarkable & left feeling extremely satisfied. My parents & I quickly felt at home exchanging many words in Italian w/the dynamic duoif you get the chance & wish to have a small taste of Italy w/out having to leave mainland, then come here!! This was my first time eating at From Scratch - it was really delicious and you could tell the ingredients were all fresh. The menu seems to change weekly and all items are made in house. We got the cheese plate sampler which was amazing along with the meatballs and fettuccini. Everything was great but it was extremely packed so the waiters had their hands full and service was a bit slow. It was okay, though because we were enjoying our dinner and all the food. Definitely would recommend for someone wanting to try a new Italian place with a small but delicious menu. Also it's BYOB so keep that in mind. read more

My husband and I enjoyed an excellent weekday lunch while visiting the village. He grew up here in Ridgewood, and we were walking around downtown, him waxing nostalgic, when we got hungry.... Though tucked into the middle of the block, the restaurant has an airy feeling with its light-filled, spare, modern design. A cozy dining room with ingredients on the wall, Italian radio in the background, and very friendly service helped warm up the ambience. In the middle of the day and week (Tuesday 1:30 pm), there was no wait. For lunch, we shared: the bresaola and the apple-walnut salad as a first coarse, and then the calamarata as a second course. All were superb, and that was plenty for the two of us. The server was very responsive about our requests for splitting the dishes and pacing the meal. Diners expecting Italian-American interpretations may be sorely disappointed. The salad was very lightly dressed and the pasta, lightly sauced. We loved everything. Flavors and textures shine through -- it's been a long time since we've had pasta arrive at the table truly al dente. I'm still trying to figure out how they make those "squid rings" without a seam...extrusion on site? We got a couple of the almond-cornflake cookies and a cappuccino to go. We would have loved to linger but were in a bit of a hurry, so we headed off with sweets in hand. Definitely looking forward to returning with extended family members. read more

This is a great spot that makes you feel like you've stepped out of New Jersey and into a neighborhood gem in a small Italian village. The service was personal and intimate, and the food was fresh, clean, and unique. We had the burrata and bufala mozzarella as appetizers, and both were fabulous. The cheese was so fresh and literally melted in your mouth. Perfect seasonings and mix of flavors on both. I had the cappellaci pasta as my entrée, which was stuffed with spinach and topped with Parmesan flakes, and it was delicious. The portion size was also just right - not so little that you're asking for more, but not so much that you're super stuffed afterwards either. We were there to celebrate a friend's birthday, so the owner Claudia brought out an assorted plate of homemade desserts with a candle, and each one was better than the next. I'm talking about a perfect slice of chocolate/nutella pie, tiramisu, a fluffy slice of cake with nutella and powdered sugar drizzled on top....wow. I could go on and on and on.
