Last week Fritz replaced a battery for me in my VW. It was something that should've been suggested and done on my previous visit to them several days before. Glenn told me my battery was "getting low" and it dumped me on the side of the road because it was completely dead. I bought my own battery and Fritz installed it for free. It took 5 minutes. Then Glenn called me 3 days later irate that I hadn't been charged by his boss the owner of the company. He told me I'd be flagged in their computer system and to never come back again. I have used Fritz's car care for 10 years, multiple vehicles. I've given them lots of business and money. When Fritz ran the place, I often recommended others to use them. But Glenn has taken over the running of the business and it's gone completely downhill. He treats customers like an inconvenience and overcharges for labor. He even admitted to overcharging labor over the phone. The last time I brought my car in, he said there was something he didn't know how to fix so I should "take my car out back and shoot it." Do not use Fritz's car care. Glenn ruined a good man's business. read more

Hello fellow Yelpers, Typically I review on Yelp for food only but in this case, even though we're temporary residents, I'm making an exception because of the excellent, *honest*, top level 5 star service I was lucky enough to come across while my daughter has been attending college in RVA. From oil changes to new batteries, to A/C repair and even the latest, a fuel leak which they called my attention to, Fritz has been absolutely on point across the board. Trust me these folks are 100% the kind of people you can trust with your vehicle. We leave here in May and will definitely miss having a home grown place like Fritz to care for our good old family treasure, (09 Hummer H3T not easy to find parts for but they figured it out) on 4 wheels! read more

They were very patient with me and worked with me even though my car was a headache. They're good people who do good work and I would consider them trustworthy. They weren't able to fix everything due to my budget limitations but they did work with me to find a solution even though I put them in a tough spot which I appreciated. read more

I live in Chesapeake and my daughter goes to VCU. She needed an inspection so she read reviews and went to Fritz's. He said it needed wipers and the center LED brake light was out, which made me concerned about the price. An hour later he called back to say there had been no power to the light, they found the faulty connection and now everything is working fine. Instead of a several hundred dollar repair the cost for the inspection, wipers and brake light issue came to $66 total. Very honest, a great quality for a repair shop. I took my VW Beetle to Fritzis for an inspection. It's an extra car, so I don't drive it that much. Anyway, apparently Fritzi's knows nothing about VW's yet they did not tell me that. There was a light on the dashboard about a malfunctioning airbag. They had no clue of how to repair it yet they called me to look into it. As it turns out, the only thing I got was a rejection sticker and additional $50 charge for them to look at it. Not cool! read more

I'm the husband Michelle mentioned below. Fritz's Car Care is awesome. Bill runs the front office, and he's a make-shit-happener. Fritz is a genuinely talented mechanic, who can come up with an affordable way to get most things done. Fritz is not the most gregarious guy in the world, he's kind of quiet. When he talks, though, it's invariably well-thought-out advice, hammered out with some real world experience. Bill's the same way, he can tell most things about your car just from your description. They're good people. I trust them implicitly, and I've never known them to charge a nickel that didn't need to be charged. No gender bias that I've seen, and they won't do anything to your car they wouldn't do to theirs. Also, in a bold step forward for Richmond garages, no nudie calendars on the wall. Fritz is a bit of a grump, so don't expect him to roll out the red carpet. However, if you want a no-shit assessment of your vehicle I wouldn't hesitate to bring it to him. I had a brake line go in my jeep and he had me drop it the same day. By the end of the second day he had it replaced and toped off all my fluids for a fraction of what I had it estimated for at other places. I was in town visiting a friend, and of course the day I am supposed to leave, I start having car troubles. I called Fritz's, explained my situation, and they told me to bring it on in, despite not having an appointment. They told me it would be ready in two hours, but after about 4 hours and no call, I called them. They said they didn't feel the car idling out on them, as it was on me earlier that day. But they told me I needed to replace my steering rack immediately, which is about $300+, and that it would not be safe to drive the 3 hours back home. I decided to forgo the repair and get a second opinion, which informed me that I did not need this replacement asap and it was fine to drive it home. However, Fritz was understanding when I declined the repair and didn't pressure me into getting it like many shops tend to do. Overall a good experience here. read more

Fritz is a great mechanic, honest about what your car needs, particularly if you have an older car... and he knows the value of his work- he isn't the cheapest in town, but he is undoubtedly the best. Lousy customer service and people skills. Got quoted for repairs I didn't really need for inspection (twice), at a price that was almost 2x the going market rate (twice). The first time, I wasn't sure if it was just an honest mistake. The second time, well, I'm not going back again. And did I mention they should maybe invest in a "people person" to work the front desk? I might have actually paid for the BS, if they'd had someone reasonably nice working up front. Instead, I got the repairs done elsewhere for SIGNIFICANTLY LESS. Please don't take your car to Fritz's. What a nightmare. read more

This dude is so cool and totally saved me hundreds of dollars. Went to Midas on Broad to get a car inspection, told me that in all it would be close to 900 dollars... I got a second opinion from these cats who told me the only problem was my brakes and that it would be 43.00 in all. So great to have an honest mechanic. He even told me when I should expect to get new brakes for my front tires and how long my battery would last. This dude rules. read more

Fritz is about as honest as you can get. He will tell you only what you need to keep you and your car safe and running. I would not think of allowing anybody else to service my cars after so many bad experiences by unethical shops fabricating issues. I have/ had 2 old cars (1989 and 1994) and he keeps them running perfect. read more

It took 4 years of trying to find an honest mechanic in Richmond and I finally found Fritz's car care. Fritz helped us out with our 97 dying Nissan Sentra and gave us a couple of extra years with her, he was super honest about what repairs were urgent and what we could hold out on. We knew she was on her way out and he worked with us until she finally kicked the bucket. And when she did, instead of asking us for a lot of money, he plainly told us that the repair was going to cost more than the value of the car and he wanted us to consider that fact that it might not be financially in our best interest to keep her going. He is respectful, quiet, and reliable. I have never recommended a mechanic to my friends in my life, but this is one recommendation I love to share. Finding an honest and reliable mechanic is like finding $100 bill on the street, it really doesn't happen that often. read more

I try to utlize local businesses as much as possible, and actually used these guys in the past and had no problem. I stopped in today to inquire about an inspection. As soon as I walked in the older gentleman at the desk gave me a nasty look like I was intruding. Every question I asked was followed up with a short condescending answer. My mother recommended Fritz to me as an honest mechanic and while he's seemed all that the few times I've been to him -- fixed parts instead of just replaced, didn't "fix" what he didn't need to, and mostly talking to me like I might understand a little about my car (I do!) even though I'm a woman --, he proved it beyond a shadow of a doubt to me today by re-fixing a headlight he (and I) thought he had repaired a few weeks ago for inspection. (The headlight was already out, so this wasn't a question, and he told me nothing else was needed to pass.) Indeed, he had repaired it a couple weeks ago but yesterday it went out on me again so I called him and he took it in immediately, took the time to look at it more in-depth and find a potential issue he hadn't found before, addressed it, and gave it back to me FREE this time. You might say that's what we should expect of excellent customer service but you know we don't always get that, especially in a mechanic. And so it is just that: EXCELLENT, honest customer service.
