My first experience with Friendly Donuts was about eight years ago when my dad discovered this unassuming neighborhood donut shop not far from his house in Houston. When he was still driving, he made regular trips there. When he no longer drove, he walked there just as regularly. You could say he was a true Friendly Donuts regular. It didn't take long to understand why. The selection of handcrafted doughy delights is enough to make any donut lover smile. My dad always gravitated toward the glazed donuts, while I'm partial to the confetti sprinkle donuts and the apple fritters. Truthfully, it's hard to go wrong with anything in the case. What really sets Friendly Donuts apart, though, is the people behind the counter. Linda and Simon have a way of making everyone feel welcome. They greet customers like old friends and create the kind of atmosphere that turns first-time visitors into lifelong regulars. This doughnut place is my jam up North! Food - If you're a cake doughnut fan, this place will not disappoint. The Red Velvet Cake doughnut changed my life. First, I didn't know such a thing existed. Second, the taste is soft and velvety. There's just the right amount of glaze on the outside. Simply delicious. A close second is the blueberry cake doughnut. Some other honorable mentions are the jalapeño sausage kolache, ham and cheese kolache, and spinach and cheese croissant. The kolaches had good, tasty filling and breading. It's obvious that both were made fresh. The croissant is soft and buttery with a tasty spinach filling. I'll post pictures of these next time I'm back. Tip: Unless you're there at 5AM, everything's cooled off. Ask for your items to be heated up. Makes a huge difference in taste. Service - I always see the same lady and think she's the owner. She's super friendly, greets everyone that comes in, and takes care of all orders quickly. Ambiance - Its an in and out type of place so not much to say here. This has the usual mom and pop doughnut shop feel. This place is probably not great for my heart but it sure is amazing for my soul. Open everyday from 5:00 am - 1:30 pm. I'm not sure why Yelp hasn't updated their hours but they are open 7 days a week. My first time there today and everything I had was delicious. I also enjoy a good sugar donut. I also got the red velvet donut. I want to say the worker was very very sweet but the food we got was terrible. The tacos were super bland. We got the potato egg and cheese. It was like powder eggs and the sliced package cheese. I could barely get through eating it. The jalapeño kolache was also bland and the breading was almost undercooked. The donuts were as good as they could be expected for donuts. We started going here during Hurricane Ike. 1st place open with COFFEE!!! Folks were lined up down the plaza , out to the street and down the shoulder. The kolaches and donuts are great. My go-to in the early mornings. Not only because it's right down the street from me, but the donuts are ALL mouthwatering, the kolaches are juicy & to die for & the owners are INCREDIBLY sweet! I always get the jumbo kolache with jalapeños & cheese & she always sneaks in a couple of donut holes for me. She also gave me freebies to try! My absolute favorites are the glaze donuts, red velvet & blueberry donuts & the custard filling!! All just melts in my mouth.
