Considering this place shows up on almost everyone's gluten-free must-visit list, I decided to come here for a Saturday lunch. It was crowded, but there was a table for two open, so my friend and I got to sit immediately. The menu is pretty much just one long page, but there was plenty of things that were appealing to me, and a good number of them could be made gluten-free if they weren't already. I opted for the Garden Vegetable Sandwich with gluten-free bread. YUM. Very fresh ingredients, and the hummus and avocado went very well together. The gluten-free bread was surprisingly not overly dense as I've experienced from some places, but it definitely did fall apart a little more easily than regular bread. I ended up having to eat the second half of my sandwich with a fork and knife, but I didn't mind. My friend got the Grilled Salmon Salad. It looked absolutely delicious (a very nice sized piece of salmon on top of good variety of vegetables), and she said it WAS an excellent salad. Despite being very busy, we had great, quick service. Our orders were taken soon after we sat down (actually our server came by twice because we weren't ready the first time). The food came out surprisingly quickly and we got a second bottle of water for our table without needing to ask for one. It was a little louder than I expected for place of that size. I don't have a loud voice, so trying to have a conversation with my friend was just a little challenging. But I guess that isn't something the restaurant can do much about. The atmosphere is otherwise a nice place to meet up with people and chat over some very good food. I'll definitely have to come back and try more of their food. read more

I believe I rated the Friedman's in midtown 4 stars but I have to rate this location 5! Maybe it's because the restaurant is located in Chelsea Market, great wait staff, or all of the above. My date and I only waited 2 minutes to be seated. Our waitress did her job exceptionally well and she was friendly. You want that from a server. Being a server is tough and relentless sometimes. Okay...I ordered the gluten free chicken and waffles and I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED! Order the dish! The spicy honey is delicious as well! The waffle was fluffy and perfect. I got my dish hot and the chicken was steaming. The crust had a perfect taste and crunch! I also ordered the lemonade of the day - pineapple mango. It was refreshing, different and not that sweet, as one would expect. I will be coming back to Chelsea Market and get oyster appetizers, then go to Friedman's for my mains. read more

I like this place. Part of that may be because we came at 10:30 am on a Sunday on a freezing day and it wasn't that crowded, so we were seated immediately and had very good service. My boyfriend has a gluten allergy so any place that has gluten free capabilities like this is high on his list of places to eat at, and this place did not disappoint him. We both ordered the chicken and waffles and it was a gigantic portion. I only ate half of my waffle, but ate all of the chicken and my boyfriend ate his whole meal. The chicken was perfectly crispy, tender, juicy and all around delicious. The syrup and the waffle have a hint of spiciness that go so well with the sweetness. There were a couple missteps along the way, but not enough for me to not come back and to not give it 5 stars since there wasn't any harm done. For example, we had ordered a side of fries and they never brought it out (this turned out to be a good thing because we were stuffed), but they also never put it on the bill, so the server must've forgotten. When we ordered the chicken and waffles, the server took a note that my boyfriend was gluten free but he said they'd come out the same because it's just generally gluten free. But when the food came out, his had a little gluten free flag in it, so I'm not sure what the server meant by his comment / maybe the flag just meant they changed their gloves and stuff so there was no cross contamination? If you come at a peak time, yes you'll probably wait, but if you come at an off time and order the chicken and waffles, you'll be happy. read more

Located in Chelsea market, we saw this cute little restaurant which we decided to try out. We ordered the spinach & artichoke dip which was on the happy hour menu. This was very tasty and the chips it came with for dipping were nice and crispy. However, for my meal I ordered 3 sides. Which were yucca fries, asparagus, and the macaroni. They were all very bland and not good at all. I just was not impressed by the food it really had no flavor and I barely ate any of it. We had a nice brunch at Friedman's during our visit to Chelsea Market. There were so many appealing dishes on the menu that we had difficulty deciding. We started with some potato latkes and matzo ball soup, both of which were delightful. For the main course, I had the buttermilk fried chicken sandwich, while my wife and our daughter shared the French toast and shakshuka. There were some mild complaints about the dominance of red peppers in the shakshuka, but the other dishes were unqualified hits. The drinks were our only serious disappointment - both the chai latte and coffee were tepid, and the former came pre-loaded with sugar after being told it wasn't sweet. The food choices were varied and there seemed to be something for everyone. The wifey especially enjoyed the chicken and waffles. Real fried chicken pieces with a very different and tasty waffle. It was very flavorful and filling, I couldn't finish it all. Not bad for $15! I would've taken it home had I not been on vacation. Friedman's is a great, healthy lunch place to try if you're in Chelsea Market. I frequent this place for their lunch salads, both the Asian chicken and the kale salad. I have only ever placed orders for pick-up (I work in the area) and I can always rely on my order being ready before the estimated pick-up time, which is great! While their salads are delicious, they are very overpriced. The portions are fairly large, but $16-20 for a salad is a lot, especially when you've can get a $10 salad at Hale and Hearty right inside the market as well. However, if you're willing to splurge, you will more than likely enjoy a very delicious meal! Their menu has a little bit of everything so great for groups that want a variety of options. The avocado toast was yummy though the bread is tough I'd suggest you eat it like a pizza - just pick up and bite into it. The bacon (would be great if they offered turkey bacon optegg and cheese isn't very filling I wouldn't suggest it if you're truly hungry hungry. As for sides: chicken sausage and potato pancakes were tasty enough. This definitely isn't a place for comfort food but for a just enough breakfast. I can't rave about my experience enough! The food was great, the atmosphere was so warming and inclusive, i felt like I was right at home. The Manager on duty, Charlie, was one of the kindest souls i've ever met and gave all his employee's and guests the utmost respect and nurture, making us feel like part of the family. Give this man a raise! Everyone in that restaurant had their day made because of him. A true gentleman who is professional, engaging and friendly to ALL. I was at Chelsea Market for the afternoon and this looked like a decently priced option for lunch, so I went with a coworker. We split the BLAT (BLT with Avocado) and then ordered three of their sides, I think that is called the Market Plate. The food was great. I have had lots of BLTs, but this one had a great creamy aioli that made it stand out. The bread was perfectly toasted and all the ingredients were very ripe and fresh. The bacon was pretty tasty as well. I loved the Market Plate, because when all the sides are tasty you don't want to have to just pick one! We got the mac n' cheese, brussel sprouts, and sweet potato fries. All of them were hearty and well flavored. It was plenty of food for two of us. Although I would've been disappointed if I just got the BLAT and paid $17 for a sandwich with no side. Glad we got the extra plate to split. The service was ok, nothing great nothing too bad. Once we got our food the waiter didn't really check in on us, but that was alright since we were wanting just a relaxing afternoon. I was glad I didn't feel rushed but it took awhile for him to circle back around so I could ask for more water. Overall it was a cool place to check out and I am happy with our choice! So, you are going to be in Chelsea Market? Well then, you need to make time for lunch. We met a friend here who lives in the city, we were visiting from out of town. The location is super convenient, easy to find and just feet from a great subway station. We had a fairly finicky group of eaters with special requests and substations, as well as the "I don't know what I want, what do you recommend?" types at the table. The server did a great job of supporting all of that, and delivered a great experience. We even happened to be on a shift change, so our first server switched with someone else, and they handled that transition flawlessly. Really enjoyed the burgers, and omelette. We did try an unusual appetizer at the table (veggie pot stickers). They were okay, but the sauce they paired was a little unimpressive to accompany the taste. It didn't taste bad per se, but spending 5-7 extra minutes cooking the onions and melting the cheese would have made the whole meal 1000% better. I really like the feel of the restaurant, rustic yet modern. Service was good and not intrusive at all. Stopped in at Friedman's Lunch with my partner in crime for a brief, well, lunch. Given its prominent location in Chelsea Market, I had high hopes and maybe unrealistic expectations. Knowing that this was to be just one of many epicurean stops for the day, Kelvin and I ordered a couple of plates to share; the spiced pumpkin and lentil salad with arugula, mint, and goat cheese (11) and the spicy macaroni and cheese (11.75). After noticing the exceptionally small sized plates around us, Kelvin flagged down our server to add an order of herbed french fries (4) to our bill. It was a good move. The servings are small. Very small. For $11.75 I pictured a large, heart attack sized serving of macaroni and cheese. Instead, it was about the size of an index card. No, not the larger 4x6, the 3x5. Sure the macaroni was nicely browned on top and served piping hot, but it lacked both the spiciness implied by its name and the cheesiness inherent in its concept. The salad, although served in a deceivingly large bowl, was lacking in quantity as well. Unlike the macaroni and cheese, however, it made up for itself in its quality. The lentils were tender and not dry, the pumpkin served soft and warmly spiced, and the goat cheese a pleasantly tangy kick to an otherwise rustic ensemble. In whole, a perfect combination for a winter salad. Don't forget the fries, though, or you'll surely still be hungry. read more

I don't normally review restaurants, but I am so annoyed by the expensive yet paltry sandwich I just got at this once excellent spot, which has now apparently become a genuine tourist trap. I used to go regularly when I belonged to the nearby Equinox and the other day I decided to go down and get their wonderful BLAT to go. Surprise: $16! And they didn't even have napkins. If you want to charge upscale prices, the least you could do is send someone out to one of the many stores in the area to purchase some napkins, for god's sake. Or work something out with one of the many neighboring vendors. There used to be a nice ambience, but they have removed the doors - the better to pull in the unsuspecting tourists - and the cacophony resulting from the combination of passing traffic noise and the restaurant's not so great sound system was irritating. The service was surly. I saw that my sandwich was ready and had to ask a server to track down the cashier to hand it to me. I got home with my sandwich and found it so thin that I actually combined the filling of both sides to make a full sandwich with one half of the bread. Disgraceful at that price. Looove this place as a solid brunch option if I'm in the area, plus I always love walking through Chelsea Market. So far they make my favorite chicken and waffles dish - the chicken is fried to perfection so that it's moist on the inside and extra crispy on the outside (super satisfying to bite into) and then they place it on top of a cheddar waffle with honey tabasco. UM YAS. Best chicken and waffles if you prefer savory over sweet. The Nova Benny is also amazing if you love eggs benedict and lox. It's a dish with two poached eggs covered in hollandaise and stacked on top of a generous piece of smoked salmon, which is then placed over a potato pancake. Also comes with a small side salad. SO GOOD. Since this is a major tourist hotspot, either make a reservation in advance or be prepared to wait an hour or so. read more

So I called her and was told she can't get in touch with anyone either, but she would try to get someone to deliver my order. At this point I have no confidence in this woman so I asked for a manager, she said he was too busy. Apparently you must specify everything and anything else you want on your burger. There are no instructions or indicators for this. And they are stingy on the drinks (my $11 mimosa was 1/3 of the glass). And the waiters are rude (she almost smashed the glasses on the table when she threw the bill at us).
