My partner and I had been missing an old noodle spot we loved, and found this place while walking near the sea wall after googling "noodles near me". I hadn't been here since the opening but I was looking for dinner in this neighbourhood today and figured it would be interesting to try them again. I got a green curry bowl this time, and maybe I was just hungry, but the food was better than I remembered. It tasted (and looked) like it could have come from a full service restaurant, not a quick service build-your-own joint. The curry sauce was much less spicy than the typical Thai green curry, but the characteristic herby flavours were there. I grabbed a Thai ice tea too, a drink that I love, and it was very nice too. The drinks are premade and bottled, so it didn't really have the layering of condensed milk and tea (which I like, but I know some people stir before drinking anyways), but the flavour was very good. More notes: it's very vegan-friendly, as all of the bowls come with your choice of protein and most of the bases are vegan. You can also choose the type of rice or noodles you want with your bowl, even when ordering off the set menu, not just when you build your own. At around $15 for the entrees, which are a healthy-sized meal for (I think) the average person, with perfect proportions of protein and veggies, the value is pretty good. Also, it's nice that they have real plates and cutlery for dining in. The staff member who helped me this time was very polite and thorough, checking to make sure everything in my order was right, and he didn't make me feel rushed to leave even though I was there close to closing time. After my first visit, I liked it but didn't feel the need to visit again, but after this visit, I'm more impressed and feel like coming back more often! read more

I am not an expert but I know for a fact, that Fresh Bowl is trying to offer traditional flavours that are not only close to home for South East Asians but are approachable for Vancouverites. Let's clarify some misconceptions. Fresh Bowl is not a salad bar. Yes, there are offerings for salad, noodles or rice bases but it is not like Freshii. 'Fresh' in their name represents seeing cuisines and flavours through a fresh new lens and perspective. Located in Yaletown, yogiis, seawall runners and families can enjoy healthy food while learning about different cultural food influences in a no-frills, contemporary environment. Now, the best part... the food. They operate as a choose your base, sauce, protein and additional add ons structure. Like a salad bar but their sauces and noodle options are gear towards a familiar South East Asian vibe. They also serve ROTI made in house fresh every day. I was told that their Indonesian, Malaysian and Singaporean customers all praised this roti and my goodness, even my Indonesian friend said it was the closest to texture to ones from home. I tried the Laksa and Pad Thai (vegan sauce) and I was blown away with presentation and the flavours. I asked the owner about their story and how Fresh Bowl came to be. I learned a bit about the history of Malaysia's flavour profiles and how neighbouring countries and the colonization played a part in that development. However, the most important part is the spices and ingredients such as fresh galangal, lemongrass and the cooking process that make up key components of iconic cultural dishes. Truly delicious! I've passed by this unassuming tiny storefront restaurant a gazillion times in the past year but never stopped inside. Then a promotion for their "Customer Appreciation Days" popped up on my Facebook feed: $5 for one's choice of custom bowls, plus a free iced tea of your choice. I'm not one to sneeze at a good deal, so my kid and I decided to take advantage of this deal and try 'em out. And now we're converts. We visited yesterday and there was a short line up at the cash (the place is super small, with only a few tables for dining in). My kid and I both ordered the same thing: a laksa bowl with chicken (you could choose your protein), and a Thai iced tea. As we waited for our order, we chatted with the NICEST guy who worked there. He clearly loved his job and the food there and was so happy we decided to try it out! He said how the ingredients are super fresh and how you can customize your orders in many ways (bases, sauces, proteins) and there were salads available, too. This guy was a genuine nice guy, the kind you hope you run into when you next visit the restaurant, knowing that you WILL be returning if the food is good. And the food WAS good. Like, really really good. Our bowls had rice noodles perfectly cooked, with a lemongrass-coconut milk sauce that was so flavorful, my kid drank it after the food was gone. The chicken was great and there were delicious veggies in there, too. A winner! (I thought it a bit too soupy with sauce, but my kid loved it and, as mentioned, drank it up). Note: they can spice up the sauce more, if you want, but I thought it had a big kick as was (I'm a woos, admittedly). As a side note, we got our orders to go and my kid and I really appreciated how they package your meals in these cardboard-like containers which the guy informed us are quickly biodegradable. I always enjoy the noodle soups served at Freshbowl. My favourite is the Laksa soup paired with chicken. The serving size here is quite large for the surprisingly low price you need to pay in this neighbourhood making this restaurant one of the top "value picks" in Yaletown. All servings also come with a heaping portion of veggies making it a relatively healthy meal. The restaurant itself is also very clean, well maintained and staffed with very friendly people. I did find that the laksa served here is a bit mild compared to other laksas I have tried. read more

I went to Fresh Bowl for the first time. The menu was unfamiliar but Rodica explained it to me. I discovered that you could customize your own dish or you could select one of the bowls from their regular menu. I had prawns added to the Laksa noodle dish and chicken added to the Pad Thai dish. My friend and I will definitely go back there as the food is delicious and healthy and has no MSG. The sauces are made from scratch daily with fresh ingredients. They've got a variety of other bowls to order, some of which you can build yourself. Excellent concept in an ideal location! How could these people F--- it up so badly? Looking to add new restaurants to my Yelp account I made my friend join me for dinner at the Fresh Bowl on Pacific. I said to him I walk by this place a lot and it's always busy. It can't be bad! He wanted to go to Little Saigon but we ended up at Fresh Bowl! First off it's a bit pricy for what they serve. I ordered the Prawn Ramen. For $10 the quantity of food was snack size. Hardly a meal! The soup with my dish was lukewarm and lacking in flavor. The prawns tasted funny! I ate 2 of the prawns and said to myself I better not eat any more. You get that feeling that these prawns were just not right. If you attempt to finish them all you're going to be sick tomorrow! They had a really fishy strong flavor. It's like sushi if you can taste a strong fishy flavor in your sushi you better not eat it! This is the first time I've given a restaurant a 1 star, but this place deserves it! Next time I'm looking for a good bowl of Ramen I'll stay home rather than come to Fresh Bowl. Love this spot for lunch, it's always busy for a reason! The staff is very friendly and fast. It is a smaller space so if you have a party of 4 or more it can be hard to get tables all together. I've tried almost all their curry rice bowls and noodle bowls, my favourites are the Singapore laksa and Penang red curry for those who like some spice. They also have a hibiscus shaken tea which is very refreshing and caffeinated! They are made the night before and the sugar syrup is added when it's made so you can't have it sugar-free. For those who can't do carbs they have very nice salads. My coworker always orders the temple salad, good portion and will fill you up. Highly recommend this place for lunch! read more

The Cambie location has become a favourite lunch spot. Quick, really reasonable and yummy. For a long time I was eating low-carb and they would substitute veggies for noodles or rice for zero up charge. This helpful attitude is why I've come to live this place. It's a family that started it and the two sons run it. I've learned all the recipes were from the mom and grandmother. I love the green curry and brown rice with chicken or prawns. Or the noodles with Laksa sauce and chicken. My vegetarian daughter loves the Bali with peanut sauce. As a special treat on a hard day I'll get the coconut dessert. Sometimes they are sold out of it so wish that didn't happen. Maybe because they make it fresh every day. The servers are also very human and friendly. I witnessed one of the sons painstakingly go over the menu with an older couple as they just weren't getting how it worked. I would have been crazy with it but he just was totally respectful and patient. Good vibe for sure. Oh and one tip is order with the sprouts in the bottom if you order takeout. Today got rice bowl with beef, added extra veg and got the spicey sauce which was their take on Malaysian sambal. I don't know if it is the same owners, but I recognized some of the staff. If it is the same owners, I don't know what the owners were thinking when they re-branded as Fresh Bowl. If it is new owners, I still don't get it. I'm guessing it has to do with the Olympics or something - but bad changes! They took a sit down restaurant and turned it into a "Southeast Asian" fast food place with sit-down pricing (Jonker Street was always priced on the higher side for Malaysian food in Vancouver, and they seem to have maintained the prices). The majority of items are now served as rice bowls (I saw some being served in plastic bowls but I hit the jackpot and got a "real" bowl). Instead of real forks and spoons you get plastic, served on a plastic tray with paper napkins. The bowls range from about $11-$16. Hello?!?!?!?! I ordered the beef rendang bowl, which was $12. You get a choice of brown rice or "jambori" rice (which you may remember from the old Jonker Street). The beef comes in a bowl on top of the jambori rice (basically a blend of jasmine, basmati, and some wild red), and a bunch of random fresh veggies like sliced bell pepper, carrots, and bean sprouts. It is almost like a salad bowl with a bit of beef on the side to mix in. I don't really get the concept. I was a bit worried when they brought the tray with the plastic fork and spoon, as well as a knife. Knife? I thought for a second, "Do they think the meat will need a knife?" Sadly it did. The beef would not break apart with a spoon and fork. To say it was less than tender would be WAY too kind. I seriously don't know what they were thinking. I know that I won't be back though. I've tried to like Fresh Bowl...but I just can't. The only item worth mentioning here is their Hibiscus Ice Tea. SO refreshing and tasty...but I wish I could say the same for their food. I ordered their green chicken curry with rice and boy..was I disappointed. I agree with a fellow reviewer that they put WAY too much bean sprouts into their items..but that wasn't even the worst part. IT was the frozen vegetables they dumped into their tasteless green curry and the chicken looked like it had freezer burn. Tasted like it too. It was quite pricey too! Definitely not worth it. I chose to come here due to convenience as my office was just around the corner but if I had knew this would be such a let down..I would have walked over to Urban Thai for take out. I had a very unpleasant evening waiting for dinner tonight. I placed my order online and waited about an hour with no confirmation so I called to restaurant to find out whether or not they received my order. I found that they did have it and that it was just about finished being made but was told that they didn't have a delivery driver available and requested that I could come pick it up instead. (I couldn't which is why I ordered delivery service in the first place) I find it pretty absurd that I waited as long as I did assuming that my food was being made and that I would have it delivered only to find after waiting over an hour that they couldn't even get the order to my house. I certainly have no intentions of ever ordering from here again, nor will I come back to eat in. The most basic level of customer service was NOT met. Out of simple courtesy they should have for one called me back to confirm that they received my order (as the website states they will). Secondly, if the restaurant offers delivery service and they are unable to deliver the food, shouldn't they call the customer back immediately and mention that the service is not available, not simply surprise them by saying they need to come pick it up? We ordered the Yellow Curry with Shrimp ($15) and the Mee Gangpow with Tofu ($15) - both loaded with too many bean sprouts and not enough everything else. I had Fresh Bowl yesterday for lunch and so I googled it to see if anyone had written a review. I've never been on yelp however I was shocked to read the past review. I ordered the Malaysian Chicken Curry($11) with Organic Brown Rice. I was happy to finally see Brown rice showing up on more menus around town. I definitely would not call my bowl "traditional" South East Asian as they seem to have added vegetables such as peppers, carrots and sprouts but again it was nice to see a fresh take on curry which usually consists of only sauce and rice. I only had 30 minutes for lunch and the bowl took 5 minutes which was great. If you are looking for seating there are only about 10 or so seats so around noon you may find yourself eating back at your office or on the patio in the rain. I thought the contemporary decor suited the fresh take on the curry bowls and i am happy to see that they are starting delivery in January (as per the scooter parked next to the cash desk). If you are looking for traditional South East Asian on a budget I would recommend Hawkers Delight on Main St. If you are looking for quick healthy lunch or dinner around Yaletown, I would give Fresh Bowl a try. Wow, not a lot of love for Fresh Bowl on Yelp! That's too bad. They're not the most exciting Malaysian café, but they're certainly not terrible. Depending on what you order, the food is quite tasty. Unfortunately, the curries can be bland... but that's why you have to know what to order and take Fresh Bowl in context of the neighbourhood it's in. You see, I work in Yaletown and if you want to grab a quick lunch, the options get stale pretty quickly. You either splurge at a Cactus Club type place, you raid the Urban Fare deli, or you get a boring sandwich to eat back at your desk. Fortunately, the food at Fresh Bowl offers something different from the typical Yaletown scene, and that's why I like it. Would I travel from across town to eat at Fresh Bowl? No. But for a worktime lunch, it's great. While I typically order their food to go, today I decided to sit inside, as it's a nice change of pace from eating in my office. They have a bright, modern interior, relatively quick and friendly service, and enough choice on the menu so you're not bored. The menu consists of Malaysian curry rice bowls, salads, and some traditional favourites like laksa and roti canai. Today I ordered the yellow curry (something I almost never order, as I'm a fan of spicy curries), and it was fine. Served on jasmine rice with carrots, broccoli and free range chicken, it was topped with fresh bean sprouts (which I find refreshing). The creamy yellow curry was mild, as to be expected. Nothing exciting, but comforting nonetheless. The Roti Canai is heavier than similar Malaysian rotis I've had in the past, and the curry sauce is extremely mild, but it's still a delight to eat - almost like a flattened croissant, buttery and flakey, fresh from the griddle. The Temple Salad is probably my favourite of them all. They serve tofu and fresh mango on a bed of greens with fresh bean sprouts, crispy onions, and a tahini dressing. It's a beautiful, fresh, healthy, flavourful combo, and I highly recommend it. Fresh Bowl? There are certainly worse lunch options in Yaletown and I don't think they deserve the bad rap. This ain't a traditional/authentic Malaysian restaurant, so if you set your expectations, you may be pleasantly surprised. I feel badly that I'm rating this with only 2 stars because the proprietor "Tommy" was so attentive and persuasive. I'm not sure if everyone gets special treatment or if I was particularly attractive that day, but as soon as I walked in, Tommy, the owner, began chattering with me and offered me a taste of each of his curries. I think I would have bought something had he not been there, but after trying each of the curries, I felt like I was obligated to actually buy something! So, I chose one of the darker red curries, with meat (can't remember if it was beef or lamb), and as Tommy was raving about his roti canai, I just had to try an order of that too. The meal was ok, and the roti canai was too oily to eat. The prices were over the moon high for the quality and the atmosphere which is fast food. They offer some kind of special digital coupon deal where you first have to download an app, then register it then preorder? I had meant to try this place for awhile. Went to the old Jonker Street a year or so ago, and wasn't too impressed. Anyways, I have been sick with a cold the past week and almost lost my voice at one point so I needed to try something for the ol' throat. As soon as I saw Singapore Laksa, I knew that was what I needed (good or bad) as in the old days of living in the West End, Thai Away Home's Tom Ka Gai soup did wonders for when I was sick! I did take out as I live close by. Got back home and poured the whole thing into a large soup bowl (asian style), and went at it. Good flavours with the coconut milk based soup with lemongrass, red chiles etc. Lots of veggies, vermicelli, and I got the prawn version. By the time I was finished the soup, my throat felt a lot better, and my voice was almost back to normal! This used to be one of my ultimate favorite places for lunch or dinner. Their Singapore Laksa was the best thing in town - fragrant, rich, perfectly balanced. As the place started to grow, the quality of their cuisine started to be consistently inconsistent to the point it felt like wasting money. I spoke so highly of this place to my friends from LA and when we got there, the Laksa was just bland. This wasn't a one-time occurrence. Sometimes their dishes are either 9 out of 10 close to perfection or 2 out of 10 bland mediocrity. It's upsetting. When this was a family business with the owner and his wife running it the quality control in taste and presentation was higher. Their Beef Rendang was incredible until they changed it to some small prepackaged meatballs that literally unchewable and taste like rubber. I first started eating Fresh Bowl at the Gastown location. The Thai Green Curry and Mee Goreng are my favorites! The food is well-made, fresh, flavourful, and quick. Always veggie options. It's an excellent choice if you are on the go, or if you have time to sit. They have slightly changed the menu now, where you can select all your options instead of it being made for you. It adds a nice touch if you want to experiment. You can also tell them your favourite prior to the change and they will make it for you. The staff are friendly and helpful.
