Stopped by for the first time. Interesting store concepts and nice selection. The customer service can be improves though. The cashiers were friendly and helpful, but the stockers and people walking the aisles were not. Nice layout for the store. Items appear fresh. It's nice to have a grocery store that I can walk to in the neighborhood. This store is convenient to shop at if you forgot to pick something at one of the bigger grocery stores (H-E-B of course). Or if you just don't want to deal with crowds. Though I wouldn't go here for meat or poultry as the selection is extremely limited. Prices for items you would find at big box grocery stores are simply more expensive. Though surprisingly off brands are slightly cheaper. They have a good selection of vegetables too. An even bigger selection of kombuchas. Interestingly with the supply chain problems the bigger stores have been having, I haven't had any issues finding normally stocked items here. read more

The best part of Fresh Plus on Duval and 43rd is the music. I love chilling in the cheese section listening to Johnny Cash. I love choosing cereal while listening to funny 80s throw-backs. I love the organic dairy products and the eggs from small local farms. I like the hours. I like using my Go Local card for good discounts. I like that I can purchase a third of a pound of nicely-priced, fresh sandwich meat or cheese for lunch. Fresh Plus is fantastic. I'll probably see you there soon. read more

I have been shopping here for 30 years. I have seen this cool little store mutate from one which stocks the basic every day foods that I need, 21 that caters to new age, wealthy clients. Most of the fruits and vegetables are organic, and thus are needlessly expensive. The cleaning products aisle is filled with natural stuff that actually doesn't work very well. As a result I tend to shop more now at Central market. It's further away and parking is bad, but at least I can find what I need. The selection of meats is worse than it used to be. Why can't I buy just regular ground meat instead of the more expensive brand? read more

Right next to Asti & across the street from Quack's is the cutest, local grocery store in Hyde Park aka my hood. I seriously came in here only looking for some decent priced wine for the night (the kind that doesn't leave you a headache the next morning). They have spectacular priced wine! I may be a wino but I do possess tastebuds and can be kind of a snob at times. I found a cab for $5.99 & a Malbec that turned out to be $7.99 when I was expecting it to be $9.99. After being impressed by the wine selection for such a tiny place, I proceeded to explore the rest of the store. Even though I love my Central Market and HEB, they can get a bit crowded at the times when I want to go. This is not the case for this place. They have a pretty big parking lot, and when I've gone they only have one checker (no need for more). I seriously walked up and down every aisle because they have so many interesting things that I was not expecting. I think my favorite part was the fact that they had ready made random things packaged by the deli. There are a lot of products that are gluten free and the more healthy option. Organic dairy products and eggs from local farms! For example they had waffles in the freezer section that were whole wheat and gluten free. Didn't expect that. Lots of household products and pretty much anything you might need to make a dinner some evening and don't feel like messing with the mad rush of the larger grocery stores nearby. I was also very shocked that they sold packaged chicken breasts and other meats for very good prices. They even offered this brand called Alba that I buy from HEB/Central Market. They cram a lot of options in this tiny awesome store. Such as, "green" cleaning products. Lovely! I am not a huge grocery shopper, I don't buy weeks worth of food at a time. More like one or 2 meals at a time, so this place suits me. Why? Well I don't have to wander all over a huge store looking for one single thing (if I don't know where to find it), its not crowded ever, AND I can walk there which is a huge plus for me because I actually like to walk anywhere and everywhere I can. In today's world of superstores and megamarts, I'm thankful for the existence of a neighbourhood grocery store such as Fresh Plus. It's a place my young son can walk to by himself to buy a cold bottled iced tea in the middle of a sweltering summer afternoon. It's a short distance from home. It's small enough so he doesn't feel overwhelmed. It's relatively uncrowded so he can browse without being jostled. It has helpful staff who are always willing to assist with a stubborn bottle cap. For less than two dollars, my son receives a little exercise, a dose of confidence, some self-reliance, a lesson in math and a deposit in the bank of childhood memories. And a cold drink. I want to start this off by saying I absolutely love fresh Plus. I've been shopping there for over 20 years at all the locations in Austin. However, after walking my small Chihuahua for a couple of miles near the 43rd Street Freshplus, I decided to pop in for a bottle of water and some kombucha. Mind you, my chihuahua was in my arms the entire time and I had no intention of putting her on the floor. She is also a licensed emotional support animal with papers and vest. A woman who clearly works there, came to me and said sir: "you cannot have that animal in the store" I replied, with chihuahua, water and kambucha in hand: "can i buy these items before I leave?" Her reply: "you can't bring that dog in the store" Me: "We establshed that already, im GOING to buy these items and than i'll leave." Her: ............ Me: "see you next time;0)" So here's the plan folks, every single time I go to this fresh Plus I'm going to bring my dog with me, I actually have three dogs and I plan to bring one of them with me every single time I come and I will hold it in my arms and I'll walk around and I will buy two items, and I will wait to see who's going to come up and bother me now. And when they do, I will make a slight scene in front of other customers...just enough to màke them look like an asshole...and make the policy review board wonder if its worth the trouble to be assholes about animals. Here's the deal I am diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. However I am not a veteran of any of the armed forces. Therefore it makes purchasing a service dog impossible for me because they cost between $15 and $20,000 so my therapist gave me a prescription for an emotional support animal and it is as legit as anything youve ever accomplished so dont look down. It may seem like I'm being petty, but i can take my dog to every other store in this town except for Fresh Plus...so that has now become a problem read more

Fresh Plus in Hyde Park has turned into a reliable friend. Ridiculously cheap, digestible wine, a decent selection of dog food for a store so small, a funky hip employee pool, and you can't beat picking up your essentials with the Sex Pistols playing in the background. Prices aren't bad vs convenient marts, and the laid back flavor of both the staff and feel make it worth the little extra you'll dish out for the convenience of its location. They have Dr. Brommer's peppermint soap everyone likes (as well as a full selection of body stuff I don't even know what for), good ready-made pasta bolongese to go, a decent beer selection, fresh ground beef for emergency meatballs - even bundles of wood for those of us lucky enough to have a working fireplace. I go here more than I probably should, but what the hell, life is short, as is the time it takes to get here. read more

I LOVE THIS STORE. The customer service and selection is fantastic. I am writing this review in hopes the owner See this and for others to know. I was standing behind you waiting for you to check out and I was APPALLED at how you were speaking to your employee. I've know a couple people through out the years of living here and they always complained how mean the owners were. And boy oh boy did I see it first hand. I notice that the turn around is pretty high and I can see why! Treat your employees with some respect and talk to them like they aren't below you. Your energy and vibe ruined my whole day. It's awful that I haven't noticed this grocery store before. Of course you will pay more for everything (a couple bucks) but, if I don't have to walk into HEB, fight the parking lot and the lines it may be worth it. Parking is a bit of a nightmare since they just have a couple spots in front of this shared strip center that is on the road bend in an awkward spot. They have fresh meat, seafood, produce, prepared salads, local salsa, wine, etc. Pretty much everything you would stop for at a corner store but, a bit nicer than a convenience store. Fresh Plus is convenient for basic stuff; that's about it. Its easier to get to and deal with than HEB, which is like going to the zoo except you're stuck in the cage with all of the animals. If you want your grocery trip to take less than an hour, Fresh Plus is basically your only choice if you live in Hyde Park. Pros: Fast, convenient, easy in and out Lots of basic stuff Good beer selection Good cookie, sauce, frozen food, and ice cream selections Cons: Limited meat and produce selection Higher prices Crazy dude with the hat comes in a lot and yells at the top of his lungs Poor, destitute homeless woman who hangs out right in front and asks you to buy her lemonade Basically, don't go out of the way for this place but its fast and convenient. This place rocks. I go in here drunk at least every other week, and the staff are really nice about pretending I'm sober and chatting with me about random crap. They also have much cheaper beer than the flag store down the street (like, WAY cheaper), with a great selection to boot. I'll admit that I've been ignored by a cashier once or twice (he was ringing me up but talking to other staff the entire time and barely made eye contact), but I'm going to pretend it's because I was too beautiful and it hurt his eyes to look at me. Simplly the best. I bought a cake for a birthday. Put on my carseat. Had to stop suddenly (love i.35). Broght the patient to the bakery for repair. No worries and and no charge. I used to call it Fresh Minus but their produce is great these days ;) For some reason I just love little neighborhood grocery stores! I believe it is a combination of slight claustrophobia in large crowds, having NO patience for waiting in line, and (being the hot shot/mover & shaker that I am), I enjoy being "known" wherever I go ! You caught that sarcasm, right? Seriously though, this is a long lived & long loved Hyde Park Icon. They have most everything one could need regarding grocery items, really good fresh deli & produce stuff, lots of vegetarian friendly frozen & canned/packaged goods. There is an extensive selection of whole bean coffees & wine. Sometimes they introduce new local food items. I think I first tried a brand new smoked humus here, OMG so good!! hmmm, what else? The employees are delightful -warm & friendly. You can use the bathroom adjoining Asti if you ask for the key. They have my addiction chips-"Snapeas" & I can't find them anywhere else- SERIOUSLY try them, they grow on you :) You might get lucky and see those cute little girl scouts selling cookies outside or a local artist selling their wares. It is pricier than HEB - but , as with anything in commerce, you get what you pay for. read more

What would you do if you found your waffles to be freezer burned, your meats to smell funky and your general groceries to be dusty and overall not-so-fresh feeling? You would return your groceries and probably stop shopping there. And the only reason you went in the first place was for convenience, so returning things isn't that much of a hassle. Fresh Plus must mean "Some fresh stuff PLUS some not-so-fresh food". Other reviewers who rave about the decent selection given the size are right. Others who rave about being able to get in-and-out quickly are also right. Friendliness? Right on the money. The folks working there have always been super nice and have given me the neighbor treatment for years, but they just don't appear to be the poster children for quality control. Sorry to say it. That doesn't mean that EVERYTHING is spoiled/bad/dusty, but there is an unacceptable incident rate. Despite it's faults, I like having this place in the neighborhood. When I walk up, I usually get a nice chat with Emmet Fox of Asti. I read the outdoor bulletin board to bone up on the alternative arts in town. I have a soft spot for small neighborhood grocery stores. I hate big box groceries like HEB, especially when all I need are a few small things. I live across the street from Fresh Plus, which has made my life so much easier, and definitely improved my eating habits considerably. I can just walk across the street and pick up some fresh fruit or vegetables whenever I please. I can almost always find what I'm looking for, which is amazing considering how small the store is. Quality takes precedence over quantity (usually). On the downside, it's more expensive than HEB or Fiesta and it's disappointing how often their produce fails to live up to the "Fresh" part of their name. Peaches and strawberries in particular are hit or miss. They must be selling a rare form of pygmy squash or something because those things they always have are pitiful. Still, the pros outweigh its shortcomings. No need to sift through aisles of crap to find what you want, a pretty spectacular selection of beer and wine, cool employees, and it's never crowded! For its downfalls, still one of the best grocery stores in my opinion. read more

YAY! This is where I can get sliced bleu cheese and Bawls. (Just not blue ba--naaaah, too obvious.) This is the best neighborhood grocery I've ever seen. They have a lot of interesting things that other markets don't carry as well as many goods from local farmers. The parking lot around it never seems SUPER busy, so you can grab groceries without an irritating Whole-Foods'-surface-lot-style game of "Bumper-Prius." Oh, and for us lazy folk, the selection of TV dinners is surprisingly good. They've got Amy's, several ethnic brands, and all kinds of other favorites for when you're feeling super lazy. It's a smaller market. You're probably not going to find everything you ever wanted here. But for the basics (and Bawls! hooray for not having to order my Bawls from ThinkGeek!), this place can't be beat. read more

I like Fresh Plus and I don't like Fresh Plus. The general feeling I have toward this independent grocer in the heart of Hyde Park is....Eh. They have all the components of a neighborhood store - a nice selection, very laid-back people, and alternative food product. Plus, plastered on the exterior wall of the building are all the posters, notices, and tear-stained lost dog flyers you could ever hope to read. Ha! Maybe Fresh Plus is just as useful as a full-service announcement board. They also carry full lines of merchandise that you may only see in partiality in chain stores (ie: they appear to have the entire line of Burt's Bees Wax products). Fun greeting cards, a big magazine rack, fresh already-made coffee. Despite my praise of their selection, they can't compete with the sheer mass of goods that larger stores can offer. What Fresh Plus lacks is exactly what we find at H-E-B...bargains, 99 cent milk, 5 for $10 soda 12-pks, and cheap fruits and veggies. (Of course, there's a reason why H-E-B can afford these prices and Fresh can't...) Anyway, stop by if you're in Hyde Park. Worth a visit. read more

I love Fresh Plus. HEB sort of scares me in it's massiveness, and while I do shop at both, it's always refreshing to come into Fresh Plus for my items. Pros: The people who work there kick butt. They have my favorite brands and are always well-stocked on my frozen vegetarian items. Some of the best local Hummus ("Grandma's hummus" brand, which my roommate and I have endearingly renamed "Bubbie's hummus") is sold in the deli section. Cons: I know, nothing is perfect (even though Fresh Plus is close). The only negative here is that a few items I like aren't sold here, but they have so much good stuff that I usually find something comparable and equally awesome. When the man (i.e. HEB) or the crowds (i.e. HEB aisles on Sundays...or Tuesday nights...or...) get you down, head on over here. read more

Such a random little grocery! Clearly designed to cater to Hyde Park residents. (Like how a few weeks ago they swapped the beer and the dairy) They've got a decent little stock of hummus and wraps in the back deli. Really, I never come here to do my serious shopping. This is a convenient place to stop by and pick up a few things after work or grab items you forgot to buy at HEB. No lines or crowds most of the time. It has gluten-free and vegan food items. The prices are a little bit higher than the big box grocery stores, but that is the price for ease of access. I have been at Quack's and realized that we needed tylenol for the kids and just crossed the street to grab some with latte in hand. Needed a hostess gift on the way to a party. The best thing about Fresh Plus is that it's a super-convenient alternative to the nearby HEB or Fiesta. You never have to wait in line to check out more than 5 minutes, and there is never heavy traffic in the aisles. If you are averse to crowds of people and shopping carts, Fresh Plus is a great place to shop. You could survive by never shopping at the big-box stores at all. Fresh Plus also has a good grab-n-go section with pre-made sandwiches, quesadillas and meats, and offers sliced deli meats and cheeses that are perfect for the gal who does not have time to make lunch or dinner herself. Prices are good. The offering of fruits and vegetables could be better, but if you are not eager to diversify this portion of your FDA food triangle then you should be satisfied. read more

Bah humbug. After living in Clarksville and shopping at Fresh Plus every single day, I was so excited to move close to the one in Hyde Park. My absolute favorite part of the store is MISSING. First, no Swedish Hill Bakery Bread for the sammy's. I repeat, no Swedish Hill Bakery Bread for the sandwiches. The bread was seriously disappointing and mealy. Ick. The rest of the ingredients are the same and are just saying, "please put me on good bread, please." Darn. Secondly, no prepared foods. Whhhhhy? Is not Clarksville what Hyde Park strives to be? This I assume to be true, as there is almost an identical sort of environment. There are good houses; local shops selling goods such as an assortment of cheese, sugar-laden baked goods, and gelato run amuck; and well... it is just a nice place. AND it has an outpost of Fresh Plus Grocery. This fine establishment offers a little of everything, in a small package. Not necessarily super local, but it does the job. They have dry goods, produce, a meat market, and just about everything you need. Conventional AND natural is what they strive for. Conventional AND natural is what they achieve. It is a go-to joint in this neighborhood, and the long-standing tradition and tenure of FPG really drives the point home that Austin truly is a neighborhood-centric sort of town! Can you dig it? The beauty of Fresh Plus is that in a world full of pretense and posing it is exactly what it purports to be: a neighborhood grocery store. That means there's probably always going to be parking available as many customers walk, take the bus or ride their bikes. It means the selection of almost everything is limited to three brands at the most. It means the produce is limited so don't shop late in the day. It means neighbors and people you see often will be stocking the shelves and running the register. It means most prices will be better than the chain grocery stores but there won't be mega-sizes of anything since there isn't enough room in the store. It means lots of people will stop and talk to each other as no one is in the mad rush they seem to be in in the super-sized markets. It means the bulletin board will be full of lots of local event and activity notices. Would I go across town to go here? Probably not. Would I make a detour of some several blocks to avoid HEB or similar even passing them by to get here? Yes, absolutely. I have many times. All things being the same I'd much rather do business with the local store than any other. The fact that they're pretty laid back and I don't get assaulted by signs and promos and samples there makes it even nicer. If you're close, don't think twice, just go. read more

I have to admit, most of what draws me to FreshPlus is the way it fits into the quaint atmosphere of Hypde Park. I love riding my bike or scooter the 8 blocks from my apartment to pick up something for dinner (or making my husband do it for me). I love their selection of all-natural, organic and locally-made products. Good selection of produce, and the prices aren't too bad there. HOWEVER, as most specialty grocery stores are (this isn't 1950), FreshPlus is expensive. I defnitely wouldn't do my weekly grocery shopping there or purchase every-day items like cleaning products or toiletries. They are also pretty limited on their selectino because they are so small. The beer selection is ok, wine is pretty good. If that is what you are shopping for, go a few blocks over to the Pronto Food Mart on Duval. Exceptional. But the place is great for picking up a few forgotten ingredients or making a quick stop to pick up lunch or dinner. The staff is always friendly. I'm not sure how helpful they are as I've never had to search much for anything. Overall, FreshPlus is quick, convenient, quiet, local but pricey. read more
