Didn't seem so busy inside even though the parking lot was completely full. I went up and down several isles with no one there but me. Pretty odd for a Sunday afternoon. Tried the California Connection sandwich at Central Market and the hype was absolutely real. Fresh ingredients, perfectly balanced flavors, and easily one of the best sandwiches I've had in a long time. On top of that, the price was surprisingly good for the quality. I would give them 3.5 stars, so it's better than just ok. This is one place I used to frequent more often. A lot of positives to report. I live the produce here as it is plentiful, and sometimes if you look carefully you can find good prices. I love the deli and soup area - they always have good soups here and some deli items are staples of mine like the Mexican rice - it's solid. The salad with cranberries and almonds and an Asian twist with kale is great. Split pea and ham soup, Five onion soup, and Chicken Tortilla have been great. They make a superb Queso Blanco here. Love their chili rubbed turkey loaf and meat loaf too. Lots of bread selections and butter too. And of course a lot of pies and pastries. Great selection of milk, and the seafood and meat depts always have great offerings. But as I mentioned I used to come here more frequently, but not as much lately as so have noticed some of their prices have just gone haywire. The fresh pressed juices are nearly $10 now. Most of the fruits and produce prices have jumped. The prepped meals - omg - they offer a sale but it's still discounted off a very high price. Like a chicken and rice platter - looks to feed 1,5 people - $5 off on sale but it's still $18, normal cost is $23ish. Some things are packaged very well and look great but - no. I got some Central Market special Italian spaghetti sauce - comes half jar and seems delicious but it was not good. The taste was off. Usually they are good with returns. But when I come here I only get what I need, and what's on sale, and that's it. I noticed Milk had gone up by at least 15% in price. And the price increases seem to happen more frequently nowadays - like a few times a year as opposed to 1-2x. But still a nice social place too. read more

I could spend hours wandering around Central Market. Went this week to grab "a few things" and somehow left with a cart full of fresh fruit, random cheeses, and like... 8 sushi rolls The sushi section is amazing. Fresh, made-in-store rolls, sashimi, and even some spicy poke-style bowls. I got a salmon avocado roll and a salmon nigiri and sashimi, and they were both super fresh and flavorful. Also, the produce here is next level. Everything looks like it was just picked that morning -- I grabbed peaches, heirloom tomatoes, and some strawberries. They even have a big section for organic/local stuff and it's all beautifully displayed! Also love the gelato stand and coffee stand towards the front of the store. Probably one of the best evenings I've had in a long time. Massive venue with so many different places to stop and have some food, but everything really kicks off once the sun goes down and the music starts playing. Easy to get a massive group of people together and still not feel crammed in together. I come here often for the food at the café during live music nights, and the pizza never disappoints. It has the perfect thin crust and an ideal ratio of cheese to toppings. The size is just right for a single hungry person--satisfying without being overly filling. Given the quality of the pizza, $10-12 is a great price! Parmesan and chili flakes are available at the self-serve bar, and the fresh-baked pizza comes out quickly, too! I aksed for the best black forest ham and got meat with a fatty texture and poor quality taste. The havarty cheese was ok but poorly wrapped so taking slices away was difficult. My first time visiting Texas and boy do I wish we have a Central Market in California. What an incredible selection of products! More than any market in Southern California. I would move to Texas for Central Market. The sugar cookie reminds me of a sugar cookie from my childhood bakery. Everyone was so helpful working there. They have a wine chiller so you can ask for any wine bottle to be chilled within minutes. I could happily spend my days walking these aisles. It's all very organized as well. Went to the market with my husband to grab a little treat, and went to checkout. The kid who checked us out thought that it was a bright idea to hold a $20 bill to the light to see if it was counterfeit. This is crazy to me as $20 bills don't even had the strip so what could you possibly be doing seriously? He never said hello, never asked me if I found everything okay. He just scanned my items aggressively, told me it was $5 and some change. Retrieved the money from my husband and lifted it to the light. Not only was it embarrassing but extremely insulting. It's clear that black Americans are not allowed in a lot of places in Texas, but what's the point of a " CENTRAL MARKET " if everyone isn't welcomed? I love their cafe - they pull a mean espresso shot, latte/mochas are great. The gelato is delicious and inexpensive - my favorite in Austin so far. First time going to Central Market, i like the displays and how they sell their mushroom and youre able to see them grow in the fridges! they have a variety of everything seafood, bakery, deli and even a cafeteria type food area with soups salads sandwiches, chicken, ect. they even had gelato! my son got the blue one which i believe was called unicorn dream (had star sprinkles on top). although its a little more pricey than a regular HEB it is still super worth it! the grocery store itself is designed almost like an ikea in a sense that you follow the aisles and it takes you through each section. the workers there were also super helpful and understanding when my child wanted to try EVERY flavor ever made of gelato . read more

This central market is huge! We just so happened to come on a day where they were doing an ice cream sampling. Our favorite was the affogato (they used in house grounded coffee espresso + nice quality vanilla ice cream) and the strawberry frozen yogurt + basil + balsamic glaze + strawberries. While that last combo sounds weird, it was SO GOOD!! It had sour, sweet, and a refreshing taste (from the basil). I am going to recreate this ice cream combo at home!! The cook at the Central Market Cafe did a sloppy job making breakfast tacos. Taco 1: Chorizo was supposed to mix with eggs but they were separated and the taco was very greasy. Taco 2: Too much refried black beans with egg and cheese. Most Mexican restaurants serve whole black beans. The cook needs to know how to cook them properly. read more

I rely on this store, and it is a shame when I can't. They do some things really well, and I have had good experiences, which counts for a lot. I found the problem when it was within a couple of hours of closing, and everyone was apparently more focused on closing in 90 minutes than facilitating service of the prepared dips they offer. Maybe no spoons are ever provided, or maybe they had just taken them up in anticipation of closing, I wondered. I stood there with an empty container looking for help, and asking for help for workers scurrying by, but it didn't matter. I understand some workers don't speak with customers. But I would hope they might give a heads-up to one who does, maybe that's a lot to expect. The checkout person said that they recommended I should have talked to someone, I didn't hear who exactly. Sure, maybe, but I didn't know anybody and had done enough to get help, I thought. Time to give up the shopping and let them go home. read more

They have self-serve checkout that is monitored and makes for an easy, quick checkout experience. While on the pricier side, you really get what you pay for here in the food quality. This store is the most reliable locally in South Austin that has the more niche, finer ingredients for elevated or advanced home-cooking. Both their produce and meat are unmatched in both their selection ++ quality. They also have the best plant-based protein and ready-made meals you can get in a local grocery! I recently stopped by this Central Market to grab something for lunch. I absolutely love their salad bar and it was just as good this time as it always is. You just fill up your to go box and you pay by weight at the front checkout. I have learned this can be dangerous so I've gotten a little more selective in what I choose. They have a wide variety of items at the salad bar along with fresh salad dressing. The employees keep the area very clean. One added benefit is that the salad bar is just down from the bakery, so I usually end up over there getting something for dessert! I got the peach cobbler on this last trip and it was excellent! They are a little pricey but you get what you pay for! read more
