i lived in hyde park for 7 years. i loved it. of course the only thing i could afford there was a tiny apartment. which was actually ok considering i'm perpetually single. i lived with a cat briefly but she's gone now, on to a better place... across town. the stuff about my personal life may seem out of context but hang in there. i need you to trust me* fresh plus is a godsend to those of us who hate HEB, or any other large grocery store. i've never been to the west lynn location so i can only offer a crit about the hyde park store. the fact that i could drop in, grab a few things and be out of there in 10 minutes was nice. *as a single male, stock piling groceries never seemed like a good idea. i eat out almost every day. i am a telecommuting professional so i am usually at a coffeeshop or a client's office 2-3 days out of the week. in other words, i only shop for myself and i want a place i can quickly fill my bachelor basket. also, having a variety of cat food 5 minutes away was very nice as it took trial and error to find a brand she wouldn't "project" onto the carpet. the prices are just north of similar products at HEB but the convenience far outweighs the difference in cost. their produce is kinda... ok. some of it looks like it was dropped in a back corner for a while but if you search, you'll find something good. almost every loaf of bread i bought had mold on it within 36 hours... charming? actually, if i still lived nearby i'd be in there everyday. i love it despite the shortcomings. my friends and i had taken to calling it StalePlus but i'd still recommend it over any other local choice. the very fact that their mural, which painted over the LONG LIVE HUFF graffiti, added this sentiment back in as part of the mural has earned my undying loyalty. as a matter of fact, i think i'll grab some moldy bread tonight. they close at 9pm... boo. read more

I often touted this place, which yes has a Will Ferrell farmer mural painted on it's backside, as slightly, and let's be honest, "too yuppy" for a regular fellow like myself. You know --- tiny/inconvenient (lack of various items --- I asked for Rice Vinegar once -- they looked at me like I was nuts), and simultaneously expensive. In this sense, we can read being "smaller" or even to a lesser extent "independent" as not being "better." However, today after work, I gave this place a shot (seriously, I was this close to turning left on Park to head over to HEB). While this place will never replace for me HEB's absurd and convenient variety of items (where else can you buy a grill, DVDs, champagne, peanut butter, and condoms all at the same time and place?) and generalized, big-time values (dull things like toilet paper, milk, cheese, and beer are always the lowest in town), it is GREAT for three things that seriously benefit from the place being so small and low-key: 1.Decent, good value produce, 2. DECENT prices on meat, and 3. overall quick trips in and out. I went here looking for three things, deli meat, some raw chicken, and some lettuce, and Fresh Plus delivered. Their lettuce was well priced, and offered almost all varieties (romaine, iceberg, Boston bibb). Other items seemed equally fresh and represented (did you see HEB's green pepper's last week? Ugh. Whole barrel of sad, wilting beauties). Sure you probably can't get some super quixotic produce items here but they got all the greatest hits. Check! I was VERY surprised at their meat section. What I loved about it was how you could buy small portions of well priced meat. THIS IS UNHEARD OF AT HEB. For example, Fresh Plus has pre packaged freshly sliced deli meats in small amounts in bags ready to go at good prices (the only way to get small sizes of fresh deli meat at HEB is to wait in the interminable deli line; the only way to get fast deli meat is to get their pre packaged meats which are either disgusting and processed or the very large fresh bags sitting out which are notoriously spotty with what types they offer). CHECK #2! Likewise, you can actually buy all kinds of varieties of chicken cuts (bones = cheaper) in good portion sizings (read: small). My mom always absconded me for only getting boneless chicken --- well sorry ma, they only offer bone-in chicken in the 3 lb package variety at HEB! Too much meat for a single fellow like me. I always had to settle for the 1.5 lb boneless chicken expensive HEB package that sometimes never got fully eaten. Fresh Plus however gives you the option of tenders, boneless SINGLE breasts that aren't $6.99 lb but rather $1.69 lb (mon DIEU!!!! HEB would never be so nice!), 1/2 bone-in fryer chickens for $1.39 (HEB doesn't even sell halfies --- even if they did they'd probably be $2.99 lb or something), and whole chickens (HEB does a good job value-wise with these, but I've only cooked a whole chicken twice in my life). I went for the 1/2 fryer for a cool $2.50 total. Yes. That is EXACTLY what I've always been looking for in terms of raw chicken. Cap this off with a unstressful parking lot that doesn't take two decades to enter and exit, and this place has HEB beat for short trips in search of meat and/or produce. Sure, I'll never buy their organic hippie sodas or groceries, but for quick necessity trips this is my biking destination. Fiesta and HEB are too monstrous for sheer facility and mobility. read more

When you are staying in Hyde Park and feeling hippy green organic and extra crunchy and need something, you can walk to Fresh Plus. See, walking uses up less fuel, which is better for the environment, which is in turn, hippy Austin-like. Need some Burt's Beeswax? They have it. Need some fruit, cheese and wine? They have it. Need some 1.0 L bottles of water for ACL fest? They have it. They even have water that is infused with - are you ready - FIVE times the amount of oxygen as in a normal bottle of water. I'm very upset to learn that a confrontational man that harassed my boyfriend and I, Is still employed at this fresh plus. He would always stare at me and follow me around the store when I would shop there alone. Then recently I was there with my boyfriend when he followed us outside the store, started chasing us down the block, called us names, and threatened to beat my boyfriend up. It was completely uncalled for and we did nothing to provoke him. I had called the manager and told her about the situation and she did nothing. I hope other women don't get harassed by him. When I first moved here and visited this area of Hyde Park, I was beyond excited to see this little neighborhood grocery. The first time I saw Fresh Plus, it reminded me of the groceries I went to as a small child with my grandmother. That said, it's not exactly the grocery store of my youth. They have all of the things one may need but they also have a wide variety of specialty items. While it's not exactly practical to do your everyday grocery shopping here, it makes sense to pop in for a half gallon of milk, I've done that twice now. It definitely beats going to the supermarket, fighting with parking and the dolts in the parking lot and then spending 30+ minutes to grab milk. Point is, this place is definitely a perk of living in Hyde Park. read more

There are a number of reasons to use Fresh Plus. They are a friendly, conveniently located neighborhood grocery. Pretty much anything you need is available. I often stop in for some tea or bottled water and usually leave with a couple other items. I went into the Fresh Plus to find something to eat. I was in a hurry. In the back, there was a spread of various types of sandwiches and wraps. The man in back was very friendly and explained where the wraps came from and said that he made the sandwiches there. I was impressed by the personal service and attempt to help without being pushy. I think it is also good that they asked if I wanted a plastic bag. I don't like it when people are rude about plastic bags (but we do need to consider the waste); it was just a simple question and I opted not to get a bag. I also like the wine selection and the nice cards they have. Overall, this is a very pleasant little neighborhood grocery. I would choose this over HEB unless I was going on a huge gathering spree. read more

As an Austin resident for the last 30 years, my recent visit to FreshPlus on 43rd street came as quite the disappointment. I have been spending more for the convenience and service. They have the best meat in town, no joke. But yesterday, I had a VERY unpleasant experience with one of the new cashiers. He was Extremely condescending with me and had absolutely NO regard for those of us who have been patronizing FreshPlus since the current owner, Brandon, was a kid working there. Sometimes I feel like I live in a storybook neighborhood. Hyde Park is full of beautiful old houses, tall flowing trees, friendly cats, and this awesome little grocery store. While some things are overpriced and the entire place is staffed by depressed-looking hipsters, coming here is always fun for me; maybe this just adds to its personal charm (the hipsters, not the prices, that is). I used to love shopping here, it's so close to my house, but I had to stop going because there's a horrible nauseating sewage smell that no one seems to be doing anything about. Which is disgusting when you're trying to shop for food. I've complained several times to management, but I stopped by there yesterday and it seems like it'll never change. I like Fresh Plus, although always call it Hyde Park Market in accordance with the mural, which must be true, as it's spray painted onto a wall for the sake of the J-man. This spot is basically an evolved Honey Farms, White Hen Pantry, or 7/11 or whatever "ya'll" have going on down here, but with the addition of organic products like milk, fruits and veggies, meats, and a solid selection of beer, wine, ice cream, and coconut water brands. Corner-store prices on most things, more than HEB but not so much that you actually want to deal with HEB and driving to bother (insofar as you live in Hyde Park). Plus, Quack's is right across the street to provide for a caffeine or pastry fix. read more

This place is great for most of my shopping needs, I do go to HEB sometimes because I am a cheap ass and they have a few better deals and more selection on some things- non perishables, bulk foods. Other reviewers said that Fresh Plus' prices are higher, but I have found them to consistently be lower on produce and real cheese. So, if you buy a lot of produce this place is actually probably more cost effective for you. I have always been pleased with their produce and the overall shopping experience. And like everyone has said- its super quick and the people are really nice! I love this place. read more

We're so lucky to have this place right down the street, they have a great beer and wine selection for a small grocery store as well as fresh produce and all the necessities. This place is a pretty good deal. I live a few blocks away and visit a couple times a week and the clerks are always really cool. You get to know everyone (at least by sight) and it's kind of nice to feel like you have a neighborhood grocery. Often people from the surrounding blocks are standing around inside just talking. Kind of nice. My only complaint is that the prices are a bit higher than the HEB down the street - usually it's something like $1 more per item. Also, the produce section isn't the best (it's maybe a 10th the size of the one at HEB) so a lot of times you simply have to forgo an item you're looking for. Nonetheless, these are the sorts of things you expect to go hand in hand with a small grocery (or any local business) and the character of the place and the fact that you're supporting a local business more than make up for that. read more

The fruit and veg here really are better than what you get anywhere else and I know I can get in and out in under 2 minutes if I need to. So I absolutely love Fresh Plus. Funny, because I used to hate it. The reason I hated it is that I used to feel that I could never find all of the things I was looking for, and would end up having to go to H.E.B. or somewhere else anyway, and that was frustrating. But my feelings have changed and I now love going there. I'd rather go there every day of the week to pick up a few items that have to trudge all the way to and through H.E.B. for a huge shopping trip. Reviewers are correct in that it can in no way compete with H.E.B. pricewise, but it doesn't have to! NO one is going there for the prices, it is for the convenience. It harkens back to an older time when grocery stores looked like that in terms of size and feel. They are usually listening to great tunes in there (I said usually, hate the headbanger crap!) , and the people know me there! I have never wanted to kill somebody when I was there (ever been run over by aggressive folks at H.E.B.?) or waited in line for more than 5 minutes. They have a great wine selection and beer, too. Fresh Plus is really good for what it is - a smaller, neighborhood grocery store. It's my first choice when we need something for a recipe or dinner or just want to browse and see what's fresh and at a decent price. I love being able to get some Chameleon cold brew coffee or Kosmic Kombucha on my way back from work and walk home. I MUCH prefer it to the Flag Store - the prices are much more reasonable and I've never purchased something only to get home and find it's off. A few of the cashiers aren't very friendly, but it doesn't have the same corporate feel as HEB does (where we do our bulk shopping), so I don't really mind. Their credit card machines seem to always have problems, but if you swipe enough times it will eventually work. And it's close to Quack's for a cookie or Dolce Vita for a chai.
