I can't believe it took me this long to go here. The best Mexican food in the area hands down. Ordered the tables side guac; the fresh taste was awesome! First the ehh.. Chips and salsa are the first thing you get at a tex/mex joint and these were below average at best. If I had to give this place a tip it would be to fry your own chips and serve them hot. Other than the above complaint I loved this place. Very nice setting - the wait staff is super friendly. I ordered the Shrimp agave which was superb. Bacon wrapped shrimp over rice. I tried my wife's tacos which were done just right. I scoped out the dishes being served around me and they all looked great. The place is a BYOB and they will make you margarita mix if you bring a bottle of tequila and serve you up salted glasses for the margaritas. Definitely a gem on the fanwood/Plainfield border. We bumped into a couple we knew frrom Cranford that made the trip. I certainly will become a regular now that I live so close. Prices cannot be beat! read more

We've been looking for a decent authentic place near us and Freppe's definitely hit the spot. Their habanero sauce was delicious and the tacos were great. I recommend the steak tacos they were definitely the best ones out of the combo I got. We just came back from Mexico and I was craving REAL Mexican tacos and this seemed to suffice. A friend said a new place had opened in the neighborhood...so we decided to try it. The restaurant was empty, so we had the place to ourselves. The staff was friendly and the service was good. It was everything we expected from a Tex-Mex place in New Jersey. The prices were a bit high for the fare, but overall it was good. We decided to share a couple combo plates to get a taste of a few things. We did the Chimichanga (spicy pork filling)/Tamale combo and the Chili Relleno/Enchilada (marinated steak filling) combo. All the food was pretty good overall. I thought the beans were a little salty, and the rice a little Al Dente, but the rest was good. All the entrees were smothered in cheese and one of three sauces (they call them Salsa). We sampled the sauces before the waitress placed our order. The spicy pork filling is rather good and we would choose that again for the chimichanga and enchilada in the future. The sauces over the dishes were good, but not as robust as either of us like. It's as if they were afraid to kick it up. The portion size was good and there were refills on the soda and chip & salsa. The disappointment was that there isn't a bar so we could have Margaritas with lunch...but we were told it was a BYOB restaurant. We'll be better prepared next time. read more

Wonderful service, large tasty portions at an amazing price. The manager checked on us multiple times and all the servers were helpful when needed. We were given chips and salsa as soon as we sat down and were tended to very well. Our food came out cooked perfectly and the wait from ordering to being served was very short. I had a decent experience with their takeout about a month ago, but when I showed up on a Saturday night I was pretty disappointed. I ordered the special jumbo shrimp tacos, which came with a mango salsa. The shrimp looked like it may have tasted good the moment it came off the grill, but they'd obviously been left to sit and cool down to room temperature. The mango salsa was below room temperature - clearly it had just been taken out of the fridge, probably from a jar they bought at Costco. The salsa would have tasted okay as a dip, but on this dish it served mainly to seep into the tortillas, (which also apparently came straight from the fridge) leaving them wet and mushy. Any Tex-Mex place with the slightest hint of authenticity knows to serve tortillas on the side, in an insulated container to keep them warm. Or if you want to call your dish "tacos", get the plate to the customer on time while the meat and tortillas are still hot. Accompanying black beans and rice were ok (hard to mess that up), although hardly memorable. They seemed to have come straight from the package, with nary a spice or garnishment detectable. The place was packed and had a party upstairs, and with $5 off coupon, the price was right. Maybe I'll give them another chance when they're not overwhelmed, but they didn't make a good second impression. read more

I came here twice- first time this summer for lunch on a weekday (not horrible, I'd rate 3 stars). Second time this weekend for dinner (which didn't happen because we walked out, 1 star). My rating comes out to an average of 2 stars for both visits. First time: Party of 2, was seated promptly since it was a weekday. Waitress was nice and accommodating. Wanted to order one of their specials, the lobster empanadas but was told they were already "sold out". Ended up ordering the shrimp ceviche and guacamole for appetizers. The ceviche was way too sweet, and both were pretty pricey for the portions we received (I think it was $6 for a small bowl of guac). Entree portions were better but unlike other Mexican/Tex-Mex places, I was able to finish the whole thing and didn't have any leftovers to take home. I'd recommend skipping appetizers and just ordering entrees. Second time: Party of 5 with a reservation. I recommended this place to my friends since it was nearby and I had a decent experience the first time. Promptly arrived before reserved time and was told there'd be a 25 minute wait. A bit disappointed, but we stayed. Asked hostess after about 20-25 minutes how much longer- she said another 15 minutes. One of the managers/owners explained to us that they take reservations but "tables are not guaranteed." Never heard of this type of reservation before, but we said okay. 15 minutes later, we asked the hostess again how much longer and she said "probably another 10-15 minutes." Other parties with later reservation times that just walked in were seated before us. We pointed this out but the hostess did not really offer an explanation. Not only did the she seem inexperienced, my party felt she was pretty rude to us. At this point, it was almost an hour after our reserved time. Because of time constraints, we were forced to leave and eat at a different restaurant. When we politely told the hostess that we'll be leaving and to please cancel our reservation, she just said "okay" and that was it. Sadly, I guess I won't be coming back here or recommending this place again. read more

The food is tasteless, very salty. Very overpriced for just burritos that were seasoned with salt and some other thing I can't put my finger on. I can't figure out what on earth they seasoned the burrito or that red sauce with. Was so weird, I tried to eat but inevitably gave up and called it a night. Total disappointment with the food. Staff is friendly, this is just one of those spots where the white folks go and think it's amazing "Mexican" food but trust me the food is far from it. Gave us a headache on the way home. Tasty bites here at a local favorite. The portions were just the right size. We had the sampler platter for an appetizer; wings with the pineapple sauce, empanadas, flautas all tasty. Empanadas were my favorite, flaky, well spiced beef. For my entree, I had the chipotle pineapple shrimp, with rice, beans, and steamed vegetables - the shrimp were plump, well cooked, sauce was sweet and spicy. Service was attentive and friendly. Went back to Freppes for indoor dining for the first time since the pandemic. We have had takeout several times and even ate outside once. I missed the indoor experience at Freppes. The chicken taco salad was great as usual, and the Shrimp Fajita Chimichanga was delicious too. The service and food quality here has significantly declined over the past 6 months. We were told as we were assigned a table, there was a reservation for our same table within the next hour, therefore we should be quick to place our orders. Thankfully, we hadn't planned to be there too long and didn't think much of it. In terms of the food, we were presented our entree before the appetizer and requested a new entree at a more timely manner. To our dismay, we were presented the same entree, which at this point was about 20 minutes too cold. On top of all that, we were presented our bill with a subtotal which was different from the amount we were ultimately charged. I honestly don't understand what the hoopla is about. While I wouldn't say the place was bad, I have to assume that the super high reviews are simply there because we are a little limited in tex-mex options in the area. I had a chorizo enchilada...and it was okay. The Chorizo seemed to be tasty but it was honestly a little hard to tell because of the sheer quantity of cheese dumped on it. The dish more closely resembled a pizza than anything tex-mex. Very crowded, which leads me to believe we just had a bad night...TERRIBLE parking situation as well. Ate here last night after good experience with takeout. I had house salad and Chicken Mexicano. Salad was almost ALL. Iceberg lettuce with olive slices and a couple of tomato wedges. I did pass on the cheese but even with that it would have been too plain. The chicken was great. I asked for no rice with extra veggies. The rice was on the plate and there were no veggies until I reminded the server. My wife had a taco appetizer, which she said was very good. The starters came out pretty quickly but the enters took another 30 minutes. Server was very attentive but the meals were so late I was barely hungry any more. They need to ramp up the kitchen. I'm from Texas, and grew up on great Tex Mex food. This place is good, great considering options in the area. One other place I went wasn't bad, but offered Cajun rice with Tex Mex dinner - Uh, no! Another place in Cranford is in a word, GROSS! Food that bad and that overpriced wouldn't last a day in Texas. Freppe's is good traditional Tex Mex, and you can bring your own Tequilla for Margis - so much better than the $15 ones at the other place where I suspect they're swapping out the good tequilla for some cheap stuff, senor. Delicious, fresh food! Highly recommended. Love the flautas, the tacos and the ribs! Only two points of constructive criticism: (1) Take-out packaging is not always well thought-out. We've experienced soggy flautas because wet toppings were put directly on top of what should be crispy food. Great place! The atmosphere is very authentic and I love the menu selection. My favorite are the chorizo tacos. If you want something good for lunch or a quick dinner, get the street tacos! I like experimenting with hot sauces so just ask and the kitchen staff will prepare your pallete. The only thing I dislike is some of the pricing. Certain food selection can be $2 cheaper. However, the staff is very friendly, menu overall is very good. I'd recommend this restaurant any for anyone at anytime: date night, family night, takeout keeping it simple but different (not pizza) and just an overall cool place. read more
