Update- 5/23 - To the owner, thank you for your response. Reviews are meant to be a customers personal experience not a personal attack towards you. I want to clarify that I did not request a refund (which I received 30 minutes ago and thank you) but rather an apology from the chef for his unprofessional behavior (which I never received). While I was addressing my concerns with Cecile, the chef was in the background making rude and inappropriate comments, which was unacceptable. My primary issue lies with the lack of communication, respect for a paying customer, and accountability. I was never offered ice packs, likely due to the establishment being busy, and I was not informed that writing on cakes was not preferred. Had this been communicated, I would have been understanding. Instead, I was told the chef is an artist and that's how he creates his cakes. Regardless of his approach, the final product did not meet my request. If the chef was unable to fulfill it, he could have politely communicated this to me. The handwriting on the cake was poor, resembling that of a young child. While I understand no one is perfect, this does not justify yelling or disrespecting a loyal customer. I have no personal issues with you or your establishment. However, I find it quiet unsettling that you took the time to send me a private message informing that there will be no apology because he felt offended and how you looked me up on Facebook and brought up my personal health. As a result, they've lost a loyal customer due to their poor handling of the situation and lack of accountability. Such a unique experience for a lovely lunch. In a world of fast food and always the same Choices- the French express is a lovely break from the norm. They offer a variety of crepes, paninis, soups and salads. I chose the green vegetable panini which included artichokes, peppers, tomatoes, zucchini, and yellow squash with goat cheese. My kids tried three different crepes, including the salmon, the sugar and the Nutella and banana. When visiting family in Latrobe & Ligonier, they took us to French Express and it's SO good. The owners are French and they bring an authentic taste of France to PA. What a treat! Cute little place tucked away in a large strip mall. We were in the area getting our taxes prepared and wanted to grab some lunch. Now, having lived in Latrobe while I attended college here the town used to not have a whole lot of options, but that seems to have changed drastically and luckily for us it included this little surprise. I'm not sure I would have ever known about it had it not been for yelp so glad we checked our options before deciding. The inside is quaint, decorated to embellish the French theme. They have pastry cases full of delicious looking treats. I'm pretty sure Matt was drooling. The ordering process was a bit confusing. There was no clear conclusion on where you go to order. We kind of stood there at the case while a woman behind the counter bustled around the working station. Also the menus are not easily readable and are posted in different areas but not complete. For instance they had a chalkboard near the door with the specials, but I didn't even see that until after we ordered and sat down. There seemed to be part of the menu listed on this wall and some over there. If you're new this can be confusing. A couple that came in after us were waiting on first because they seemed to know where to go. Once we saw them we figured out what to do. Just a little bit of learning curve. So here's the thing. The food is really good. Like crave worthy good. I got a cup of mushroom soup and a smoked salmon with horseradish cream, capers, and red onion crepe. The crepe was so delicious. The soup was good, but I prefer a thicker soup when eating mushroom soups, It was a bit watery, but it had tons of mushrooms which I appreciate. The place is a little pricy for lunch but the quality calls for the tag, not to mention they change menus regularly to keep things fresh and use in season ingredients. What a surprise to find this delightful little restaurant in such a drab, dreary strip mall! When we arrived, it wasn't apparent that this was an actual dine-in restaurant and not simply carry out. We made my poor BIL jump out of the car in the pouring rain to scope it out. Once he made the confirmation that it indeed was eat in, we all made a run for it, and am I ever glad we did! Because she wanted soup and I wanted quiche, my MIL and I decided to share the quiche combo - a cup of soup, side salad and slice of quiche for about $12. The side salads were ready made in a refrigerated case. Because of my aversion to all things containing peppers, they kindly remade the salad for me sans the roasted peppers. This left a large container of fresh spring mix and a large handful of super sweet grape tomatoes. I also had a choice of several homemade dressings. MIL opted for the daily special soup - chicken and vegetable. Chicken was the key word here - it was chalk full of chunks of roasted chicken with a few veggies thrown in. She thoroughly enjoyed it but did say she would have liked to have had more veggies. The star of the combo was the quiche - possibly the best quiche I have ever had. It was light and fluffy and full of flavor. This will, from now, on be the quiche that all quiche will be held accountable to. It was a huge slice that was large enough for us to share. If this wasn't enough goodness, we also were served a deliciously chewy piece of baguette. It was a fantastic, flavorful, filling meal for such a cold, yucky day. Hubby had the house smoked salmon sandwich. He also thoroughly enjoyed the salmon which was accompanied by cream cheese, capers and onions on that chewy baguette. BIL chose the pulled pork sandwich. Honestly, this sandwich seemed a little out of place on the menu but he devoured it. There were two cases of luscious looking desserts but we were too full to even consider partaking. I was very surprised at how reasonable, even inexpensive, the prices were. I do regret not bringing something home for later. After 35 years of frequent trips to the Latrobe area, this is most likely my last visit. I'm so sad that I probably won't have the opportunity to return to French Express. French Express Food is still one of my favorite places to stop in and get something delicious to eat. The quiche is one of my favorite choices along with a fresh salad. The owners are so friendly and engaging. Today, my husband and I had a nice conversation with one of the owners about making preserves. He told us a wonderful story of growing up in France and his French grandmother making jam and braided breads. Husband bought some of the Peach Vanilla jam prepared on site. Sort of disappointed compared to another time I had been there. I ordered the sandwich combo with the ham/brie/cornichons/butter on baguette. The baguette was VERY good, and there was plenty of ham though it was shredded rather than sliced and pretty salty. With a real (or even Pret A Manger) sandwich like this you would get a thin slab of recognizable Brie and the butter would be so thick as to be another ingredient. This cheese was not recognizably Brie and the butter was barely there. The cornichons were good but all bunched together. For the soup I got the potato leek, which unfortunately was terrible- watery and flavorless. Most of my frustration was with the staff and store arrangement. There are two cash registers at different parts of the counter and there is no rhyme or reason as to where you are supposed to order what (they also have beautiful-looking pastries, chocolates and French pantry items). If some nice people had not acknowledged that I was there before them but at the "wrong" register, I might still be in line. The workers seemed to be mom and two daughters. The mom was trying to organize things but not succeeding- the younger one actively did something different than she was told (and unhelpful). Once you order, if you're eating in they bring the food to you. Unfortunately it took her two tries to bring the right thing, I had to fetch my own spoon and I never did get a napkin- I gave up. There are about 7 bistro tables and a high top in the window. It's cute and the displays of the pantry items look appealing so you don't feel like you're sitting in a convenience store. You bus your own table & I doubt anyone wipes down the tables. The lunch options around here are pretty dismal so I might come back, but if I do maybe i'll try the quiche. I'm bummed too because I wanted one of those chocolates but I don't want to go through that again. read more

My wife and I came here for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. It is in a plaza and pretty easy to get to. French Express was recommended to us from our friend who lives in the area and has given them a really good review. They have received a lot of good reviews so far here. I have to say I have to agree with the good reviews. When we walked in we were really hungry but we couldn't decide what we wanted right away. Should we go with a combo of a quiche, soup, and salad, a crepe, or a sandwich? I couldn't make up my mind so I just went with a BBq pork sandwich. I knew that would fill me up and have me satisfied for the day. If we lived close by we would be back a lot sooner rather than later to try out their other food items on their menu. My wife went with the Salmon crepe. My sandwich was great. The bun was perfect. It went perfect with the bbq pork and didn't get soggy at all. It was delicious. My wife really enjoyed her crepe too. If I wasn't so hungry I probably would have went with one of their quiche's and did a combo of some soup and a small salad for $9. They serve good coffee, desserts, and other sides like mac n cheese. I really wanted to try one of their desserts but it was too early in the day for me (I can't believe I just said that but it was). There is a lot to like here. Even the atmosphere and the music they play give you a good French feel here. If you go somewhere close by for lunch or dinner you might pay a little less but the quality here is worth the price point. It's good quality food that you won't be disappointed in.
