I really enjoyed my visit to Gary's. I was on a mission to try a new place, and wasn't expecting to come to this area, but things changed. I have been to Carrie's before, but not for for quite a while. It's nice, clean, and the people were very accommodating and pleasant. I believe there is a bakery attached also associated with Gary's , and maybe even another business besides. I had a standard breakfast, all prepared well, but with the wonderful addition of homemade bread. The only thing I would've changed, would have been if there were some type of jams provided with the breakfast, but that's kind of a little thing. It may even have been available had I asked. My dad and I stopped here for lunch after 35 miles on the GAP. We stopped here based on an old looking sign signaling directions that was just off the trail. This place had a mix of old town diner feel and touristy trail users. I got a cheeseburger and french fries and my dad got some type of ham sandwich and soup. We both found the food to be adequately delicious. I am not picky, so I can't say the burger was the best I've ever had, but it was perfect for the moment, location, price, etc. The waitress was very nice and service was pretty good despite every table being full and her being the only help. Other customers were friendly as well, inquiring about our obvious bike ride. I don't know why anyone would give a bad review of this place- and the few I read clearly are delusional thinking they walked into some type of 5 star fine dining cuisine. read more

Had the homemade meatloaf. Bad choice. It was so gritty. The "meat" didn't taste like meat. Dont know what was in the mixture but I dont think they used any eggs to bind the meat. It was flavorless and very dry,even with the gravy. I should have had the chicken fried steak since I had that once before and it was excellent.. Beware!! Stay away from the meatloaf. My friends and I rode by here and it was the only place open in the town. We were on the The Great Allegheny Passage. There were 3 of us and we were hungry. This place was a total disappointment. I'm only giving it 2 stars because the onion rings were pretty good. However, it was the worst hamburger I had in 7 states. It was way overcooked and the waitress didn't ask how I wanted it cooked. It came with no condiment and no vegetables, so it was as dry as west Texas. I literally dipped it in the ketchup she had provided for my onion rings. It was flavorless, and the bun was stale. The service was mediocre and humorless, perhaps even put out that we did. BTW, don't park your bikes in the front where you can see them, even if you aren't blocking the front door. The bathroom was nasty. It smelled of week old urine. It was the foulest toilet I used in 10 days. And I write that knowing that I used a couple of outhouses, port-a-potties, roadside gas stations, and even peed in a bottle in my tent (they have purpose made bottles for camping). Buy an extra clif bar and skip this place, unless you were being paid to try every onion ring in the country. read more

My meatloaf had the texture of instant mashed potatoes, it didn't even have the taste of ground meat. Imagine meat that mushes between your tongue and the roof of your mouth, no chewing required. My husband's roast beef was soggy cubes of meat. My friend had the turkey dinner and all the meals had the same lumpy gravy. The green beans tasted like vinegar was added to it. Garys is a little gem around the corner from the PNC bank. Gary is a qualified chef/baker who runs this cafe bakery and ice cream place as well as full service catering with his own banquet room. He is well respected for miles around. I was at a gun bash of close to 400 that he catered and it was good, fast , and well managed. Also had his food at a wake where I met him in person. Nice and humble. I had a burger so I will talk about that. Fresh ground daily on premises with home made bun. About 5 or 6 ounces juicy and full of clean flavor. Charges $4.25 which is tremendous for the sandwich. Bakery next door is also a treasure. Hmmmm. Great little fresh treats at good prices. Loaf of homemade style bread is only $2.50. Nothing too fancy but good stuff. Help shuffles between rooms so there may be small delay. I have paid $12 for burgers not this flavorful. Daily specials and breakfast till 3 pm. Well worth the time to go over from the bike trail. It is very light traffic streets in a small clean town so no need to worry about leaving bikes outside. read more

This is a very nice small diner where I stoped for breakfast after riding the GAP trail to West Newton from Pittsburgh. The inside is cozy and has a very nice ambience. You feel like you're in a friendly neighborhood hangout. There's a counter at the back and booths along the sides and some tables in the center. I liked the decorations on the wall. It was very clean and neat. I had an egg breakfast with bacon, potatoes and toast. It was very well prepared and filling. The coffee also wasn't too bad. It was a nice meal for a reasonable price. The meals was $6 and with coffee and tax it came to $7.95. read more

I had breakfast at the Chuck Wagon recently while taking a break from riding the Great Alleghany Passage bike trail. Just across the river bridge from the trailhead, the Chuck Wagon was very convenient to reach, and also about the only place in town open on a Sunday morning. The people inside -- staff and customers -- were exceptionally friendly, engaging me and my girlfriend in long, amiable conversations. And the breakfast -- pancakes, eggs, sausages, bacon, toast, and endless coffee refills -- was delectable and fairly cheap. read more

Gary's is a great, locally owned place with a diner feel. It feels like your loving mom made each meal. Gary makes homemade bread, if you get a sandwich order it on Gary's bread. My favorite is the chicken salad club, or if you're lucky enough to be there on a Sunday get the pancakes. Next door he sells his homemade pastries. Another stop on our GAP bike trip (only 7-8 miles from were we camped, so we reached it in no time). They are a small town restaurant that is fortunately open on Sunday. The breakfast was good and filling, as my son and I ordered the 2x4 (2 pancakes, eggs, pieces of meat, and toast) and the BF got french toast. The service was good, but what was best is how accommodating the were to us. It was my son's 8th birthday so a few days prior, I called and had them prepare a cake from their bakery. When we were finished eating, the waitress brought it out and got the restaurant to sing "Happy Birthday". As noted by another reviewer, there's not much room for parking, even bikes. There are no racks and we had 3 bikes plus a trailer of gear. We were assured that nothing has ever been stolen from there so we just put our bikes by the side of the building. Sure enough, nothing got touched, so it's a safe area. read more

My son and I were passing through town on the GAP trail, dusty and tired and stopped in for lunch. The special on the board was ribs with mashed potatoes, and it was a real incredible treat! The sweetheart waitress charged our phones and filled our water bottles. Don't miss the bakery next door for a tasty desert. Well worth the minor detour from the GAP trail. Moldy Cream Puffs from Bakery! My wife and I have dined at Gary's Chuckwagon in West Newton, PA several times since we learned about it several months ago, and found the food and bakery products of decent quality and price. However, near closing on March 2, 2017 we purchased two cream puffs as take out. At home, I had taken one bite of my cream puff, and when I removed the second bit there was green mold growing between the cream and the crusty pastry. I began gagging and threw up. My wife began carefully probing her cream puff and also found mold in her's. The next day in late morning we returned the moldy creampuffs to Gary's Chuckwagon and asked to speak with Gary and the lady in the bakery said Gary was preparing for a fish fry and could not be disturbed. I explained the situation to the lady and she again said Gary could not be disturbed. She said that she could not understand the mold because the cream puffs were freshly baked the day before and maybe the cooler did not work. I could see this discussion was going nowhere, because mold does not grow to that extent overnight- this was an insult to one's intelligence. I provided the lady with my contact information and she said Gary would call me the following day. He did not call. On March 4, I called and the person who answered the phone said Gary's car was there but they did not know where he was. On Monday, March 6, I called again, and the person who answered the telephone, said Gary was there, but she was busy and did not have time to look for him and asked me to call back in 10 minutes. I called back in 20 minutes and she said she had not seen him, so I again left my contact information. As of the evening of March 7, I have not yet been contacted. I have pictures of the moldy cream puffs. According to the US Department of Agriculture website, "Some molds cause allergic reactions and respiratory problems. And a few molds, in the right conditions, produce "mycotoxins," poisonous substances that can make people sick." Further, the USDA recommends discarding moldy bread and baked goods. I do not know the dangers of the subject green mold; however, at best it is disgusting. We will probably never be able to enjoy cream puffs again. In my opinion this situation should be addressed. Gary has my contact information if he is interested in seeing the pictures of the mold on the cream puffs. Also, I would be interested in hearing how he will address the issue of green mold in the cream puffs he is selling from his bakery. read more
