It appears that the owners are keeping with the European traditions of relaxed atmosphere and easy pace. The night that I stopped in there were three other couples dining, which I understand were all regulars because of the great food. I can't disagree with them. Definitely an experience I'd come back to for special events and showing off to out-of-towners. Definitely pricier but justifiably so -- chef has culinary chops, packing and pairing complex flavors within a dish. Got duck and filet and both were cooked as requested and to perfection with a delicious char, a juicy center, and perfect salt and seasoning. Sides were packed with flavor as well. Ordered a cheese board appetizer as well and they reopened my eyes to blue cheese, peppers, espresso beans, and olives. Very intimate setting, maybe 8 tables max with one server (maybe two and I missed) but I'd plan at least a couple hours for your dining experience, especially if you plan to get appetizers or dessert. It's been a while since Mise En Place had a recent review. There are two ways to capture this place: sensational food in a town that is mostly lacking in sensational food, and the little restaurant that could. First, the latter. It's a credit for any restaurant to survive the challenges brought on by the pandemic. Much less thrive and become a community fixture. Throw in the endless construction:destruction during the downtown "revitalization", and it's clear people come here because they WANT TO be there! This brings me to the food. You cannot pick a bad dish here. Everything is expertly prepared from excellent ingredients, and thoughtfully presented. Flavors are authentically continental. Keeping the fresh rosemary in the onion soup stock is a taste and body revelation. It's also a particularly nice touch to be served with highly creative one-bite starters. Although it's not convenient to have wine sold on-site, it does leave the opportunity to bring bottles you know will pair spectacularly with your meal. I love this place. Truly love this place! And will keep coming back when business or pleasure travel brings me to Cumberland. read more

Everything was amazing: tiny croissants with house made garlic spread; amuse bouche was soo tasty and the duck was fantastic. Stopped here for Sunday brunch takeout thanks to seeing someone else's post on Facebook. Was just kicking tires until I saw bananas cost French toast. Contacted them and ordered via Facebook and picked up 15min later. Small spot - they have plans to have sit in service - but with a soft opening and the government shutdowns, they only had carry out. Seemed like a family owned and operated business. They were very nice, and talked about their plans and business while I waited. The French toast was very good - the bananas foster aspect was very good, could have a little more glaze but very tasty. Portions was incredible for $12 - 4 large slices. I added bacon to the order and it came with a potato mash and whipped cream. All in all I would recommend this place. Will return to try non-breakfast items! Thanks read more

Eaten from here twice. Once for breakfast and once for dinner. Both times, very good. Haven't been there to eat but am anxious to do that when things get 'back to normal.' I am a big pulled pork person and I am a large bananas foster person so on the days they offer these items, I was lucky enough to be considered and though of and surprised with great food. Found this place accidentally and we are so glad we did! Took my parents to Cumberland for the weekend and started the weekend off with this fantastic meal! Greeted with smiles from Jasmine and all the staff and owners. We got there at 5:15 right after we opened and it was nice and quiet til 6 when others arrived. Called ahead and learned it is BYOB so we packed plenty of wine. The complimentary appetizer was delish! We then had raw oysters, oysters Rockefeller and the charcuterie. All was amazing. No complaints. The bread board was all made in house. Focaccia was the best. Had French onion and she crab soup. She crab tasted great but had fish bones in it. Don't skip it but swallow carefully. Onion soup was good. They put the cheese on the bread, not on top the broth. Way easier to eat. Had Halibut, steak, and seafood dinners. All was amazing. Seriously , no complaints. We split the chocolate sampler among all four of us. Just a bite of each one was enough. Oh the coffee!!!! Do not leave without having their coffee. I'm a cream and sugar coffee drinker and I didn't need to add any! the owners came out to visit with everyone. Loved this place. It's not cheap but we spent 3 hours here. Felt like I was in Europe having dinner in France. Dinner is an event. No rush. Worth every penny!!! read more

We were driving through and were looking for a nicer dining option. This is an interesting restaurant that seems a bit out of place for the town it's in. Let's start with the good. The dishes are creative and the restaurant seemed busy. The place had a nice, quaint vibe and our server was friendly. There were good flavors on some of the items (truffle sauce, steak sauce, and strawberry dressing). As for the OK...this place is BYOB. There aren't many options in town with much selection if you're a wine drinker. We tried a seedy liquor store nearby...no. The restaurant across the street they recommend has a few bottles of to-go wine, but nothing special. Now the bad. The service was super slow. It took almost two hours for us to get our main dishes, despite the place only having a handful of tables and only a few of them filled by the time our food arrived. To top it off, the most expensive item on the menu (a $55 Delmonico) was cold. I didn't say anything because I was super hungry and couldn't risk another long wait. We skipped out before dessert for the same reason. In short, this place has potential, but misses the mark. It's probably as busy as it is given the dearth of options nearby but in a town with a more thriving restaurant scene, it wouldn't last too long. read more

We just tried this new French- American bistro in Cumberland. I could not be more excited that they have chosen our town to open this fantastic restaurant. The service was impeccable, quick & friendly. They started out by bringing us a taster of roasted brussels sprouts with bacon jam and cauliflower mash. It was so delicious. We were also given fresh warm bread twists with sweet butters. The wedge salad was the best I have ever eaten, as it was complemented beautifully with dollop of bacon jam & deviled eggs. The food is amazing, and I appreciate that it is authentically French, rather than fancy American. Also, the menu stands out for Cumberland: no beer cheese, no crab dip, not a Grill. I've eaten there twice now. The first time we had the pecan-glazed salmon, roast chicken, and creme brûlée for two. The salmon and brown rice were under-seasoned, though easy enough to fix. The creme brûlée came to-go in a mason Jar, which made it even more special. This meal was nice enough that I decided to come back for Mother's Day. The second time we had tomato salad with burrata, mushroom risotto with morels, and bread pudding. The chef pointed out the morels for me, since I'd never had them before. The risotto was one of the best meals I've had. The bread pudding was also big enough for 2, and came with creme anglaise. I love bread pudding, but I've never LOVED creme anglaise, because who would? But this sauce was so well balanced, the vanilla so floral, that I am truly in love. This is a special restaurant, and I'm hoping to be able to keep come in back once a month. read more

A gem of a restaurant that is an absolute must dine if anywhere near Cumberland. In fact, try this place no matter where you are. Menu changes weekly but I had the guyere with chicken and spouse had the Ahi Tuna. The baked oysters were the app and really fantastic. Bread was homemade and came with two croissants and a fistful of garlic cloves in olive oil. We were still 2 1/2 hours from home, so we had to forego dessert - but the creme brûlée came in two sizes. Bring your own wine - or alcohol ( which saves significantly on the bill) and take some extra time to enjoy this outstanding restaurant. read more

Very happy to see this place opened back up after the relaxation of quarantine . This was our first visit. Friendly and attentive staff, we enjoyed a delightful Sunday brunch on the sidewalk cafe'. Service was impeccable, the limited but well-varied menu offers something for every palate. Delmonico steak with potatoes and grilled vegetables was out of this world- perfectly prepared, medium rare and generous proportions . My main squeeze had a wonderful salmon bernaise. The weather was perfect and the venue well matched. Regrettably there wasn't room for the creme brûlée at the end of the meal- maybe next time. Opening a restaurant is no easy task, especially so during a pandemic, but Mise En Place has not only survived but has made a success of it, and seems to becoming only more popular with time. I have been two times so far and very impressed each time with both the food and the service. The food quality is out of this world, everything tastes so very very good. I've had the French onion soup, a cheese board, and ground beef quesadillas. In addition to this they serve scrumptious complimentary muffins during brunch with fresh butter and jam. There aren't a lot of truly gourmet restaurants in this small town, and I can honestly say the quality of the cuisine here is absolutely top notch. They are truly gourmet chefs here and they know haute cuisine. While I was initially frustrated with the highly unpredictable operating hours, I have now come to believe this may be a clever response to avoid the most common financial pitfall associated with extended opening hours, staffing & operating costs. The hours I expect will expand and contract with demand. As a local, I've learned to monitor their Facebook page for their weekly schedule as well as weekly menu options, and I simply make reservations accordingly. In a way, it almost gives the place a "private dining" or "speakeasy" vibe, and when dining, especially dining inside, it almost feels like a private dining club or membership dining club. The small nature of the venue and staff-to-customer ratio makes the service feel very personable, very human, moreso than a typical restaurant. Another aspect that contributes to the appeal is a frequently rotating menu; it gives a reason to come back and come often. Since the food is guaranteed to be extraordinarily good, when there is a limited time menu option that I want to sample, I find I am highly motivated not to miss it.
