Fantastic dining experience!! Second year in a row we have dined here. Great wait service (generally speaking wait staff in Mexico is top notch). Drinks were unique and refreshing! Food was delicious all around. We had the catch of the day "the red snapper" and the lobster tacos. The red snapper was cooked to perfection. The food is great! However, the portions are HUGE which is not a problem to have but the wait stuff doesn't warn you when you're ordering too much or in our case actually tells you that the portions are small! So unfortunately we ended up wasting some food. But they are very polite and friendly. The outside seating is gorgeous. And all in all it is a great experience! read more

The best meal we had in Cancun! As a massive foodie and self proclaimed chef I highly recommend this restaurant. Everything was impeccable, from the succulent Grilled Calamari appetizer to the scandalous apple pie pizza dessert. I really can't rave enough about this place. The service was fantastic. I asked a bus boy where the restroom was and not only did he politely show me, but he walked me there and nudged the door open for me. Who does that? I once asked a waiter in Le Cirque where the restroom was and without making eye contact he gestured to the right and kept walking. Blah. The manager came to our table and asked how everything was with sincere interest. We ended up ordering a second round of appetizers after our main meal. It was that good. We also ended up tipping our waiter 70% of the total bill. We NEVER do that, we aren't Rothschild's, but this guy really deserved it. If you're in Cancun don't do yourself the disservice of missing out on the culinary gem. If we ever go back, Fred will definitely see us again. read more

Read the many Reviews, so we thought we'd try it out...pretty place, very friendly staff. However the food just wasn't all that great. Had the sea bass, but it was under cooked. Which had to be hard to do as the plate it was served on was literally 300 degrees.. the side dish of au gratin potatoes was four slices of a potato with cheese melted on top. Wife had coconut shrimp, but they don't serve it with a side of any kind..very odd. Lastly..the table wobbled. 140.00 dinner and I can't have a table that sits flat? The hotel that I stay at for work is right across the street, and I look forward to going to Fred's each time I'm there. The food is very good, the atmosphere and service are outstanding, and the prices are fairly reasonable for fine dining. We normally skip appetizers - they'll bring you out some fresh tortillas and sauces, and a small cup of shrimp soup. While I've never ordered desert, they also bring out shaved ice with a vanilla sauce - also very very good. Well worth the trip for good seafood! read more

This place is beyond phenomenal. The food was delicious, I ordered the Pasta with food from the sea, and the sauce was fantastic. I highly recommend it and the atmosphere is wonderful, quiet and sensible. The wine was great and everything overall was spectacular. read more

What horrible service and food, so disappointed in the positive reviews I read. This was my group of 4's first night in cancun and Yelpers suggested we give this place a go. It was pretty, walked in and was instantly seated. We then were greeted by a few servers and given our menus. It then took us 20 min to place an order for drinks so by time we did so we placed our entire food order which included appetizers. About 30 min, yes, a whole 30 min later our Buffalo shrimp appetizer came out and it was horrible. The shrimp was so over cooked that we could barely chew it enough to swallow it. Then we waited. And waited, and another round of drinks later we were still waiting for food. Literally an hour and 20 min later I flag down a manager and demand our food! The manager looked appalled that we were complaining about this wait but we actually watched two whole parties sit after our group, ate, drank and left before our food was even delivered. We order another round of drinks and come to find out, they had given us incorrect drinks the whole time! They were letting us sit and wait hoping to spend more and more money, as we could overhear them talking about it. The manager had the nerve to give us $8 off our $175 meal! $200!?!? In Mexico!?! For literally the least authentic meal possible, and the worst cooking at that!! Stay away from Fred's, we will never return and have already filed with our credit cards to get our money back. read more

Bad service, nobody cares about the guests. Had a reservation but had to wait for 30min due to table cleaning. However the seats were not cleaned and had left over food everywhere. Food tastes plain and one of my friends threw up on the way back. Would like to give a zero but the lowest rating seems to be one. read more

Went to Fred's last night. The food was overpriced compared to other restaurants in the same area. The wait staff was idiotic - coming to our table many times to remind us that if we needed something to let them know. As opposed to? The food was ok but not worth the price and the wait staff was annoying. We will not go back as there are many better options in the area. read more

Amazing service, attentive, friendly, warm, delicious. This was exactly what I look for when on vacation. The staff was so attentive to everything we needed and gave us great recommendations on the food. For example my girlfriend accidentally splattered something on her dress, when she went off to that washroom to clean it our server came by with some club soda and a napkin to help her with the cleaning, WOW! Great food and location but my number one complaint consists of the outside seating issue I had with the restaurant. My wife and I ordered several drinks (which were great) and two entrees with sides. My wife had the shrimp and I had the filet mignon. The shrimp was great and filet was cooked to my perfection. The biggest problem we had was being sat outside by the lagoon and the various trees and brushes that surrounded it. As we sat there I looked over my wife's shoulder and low and behold I see the trees moving behind her. I thought maybe I was seeing things and then It moved again. Low and behold, a huge as# rat jumped on one of the rails and it was time to move inside. The manager and the waiter sat us inside without any hesitation but acted like this wasn't a big thing at all. I just didn't like how the manager brushed this aside like it was another day at the office. Meh, anyway the food was awesome but I suggest you reserve the seating in the NO RATS section....lol read more

First time here. Everything was fine. We had the tuna sashimi and black cod. My husband loved his black cod. My saahimi was fine, a little thick of a cut and hard to.pick up with very odd chopsticks. I am a picky NY diner. And I am giving this place 5 stars which says A LOT. We came to Freds for our anniversary dinner. AND it did not disappoint. They gave us a lovely romantic lagoonside table. I have a lot of food allergies (gluten, garlic, onions) and it was absolutely no problem for them to make dishes to accommodate me. My husband ordered the paella (no garlic, no onions) and we were happy to actually hear it would take 20 mins. That means they are making it for us fresh. And it was out of this world. For an appetizer we had the octopus carnitas - The best octopus we've ever had. Tender and flavorful without garlic or onions. A real treat. We really want to come back here again for dinner but we also want to diversify our time in Cancun. The next time we are in Cancun this place will be at the top of our list. Our group of 10 visited Fred's twice during our week in Cancun, and the food was outstanding. The first time we were seated inside (late making reservations, so glad they could even accommodate such a big group). Our only complaint was that some of the benches were too low to be comfortable eating at the table for the shorter among us, and then one seat was oddly high. The food and wine were simply outstanding. I had the salmon carpaccio and lobster macaroni, and both were amazing. We all shared desserts, which were also great. A lovely atmosphere, and close to the Marriott and other hotels. Eating in the hotel zone is easy because they filter all their water, for those concerned. We enjoyed it so much we went back a second time on our last night, and sat outdoors in a lovely private pavillion. I had the caesar salad (great), carpaccio again, and grilled octopus (average). The service was much slower to start on our 2nd visit--we were at the table at least 30 minutes before we even got our drinks, and the evening was easily a 3 hour event. While nice not to be rushed, it would have been better to be a little more efficient about the drinks when we arrived, but we found that to be the case several times in Mexico, so just plan on dinners being a multi-hour event especially for a group. "Vacation Pace" to go along with the "Vacation Sized Margaritas". And very reasonably priced for the quality! read more

Went here for my husbands birthday on our last day in cancun based primarily on proximity to our hotel and Yelp reviews. We made reservations days in advance for a Monday night with requests for water views also stating that we were celebrating a special occasion. We were given a lackluster greeting on arrival and taken to a table over looking the street. We requested a different table and were begrudgingly given a slightly better table (with empty tables overlooking water in abundance). I gotta be honest, that kind of did it for me: I was mortified that I had chosen this restaurant for my husbands birthday celebration, and offered to leave and find somewhere else. My husband being the gracious person that he is, said we should stay and check things out. The servers have their own agenda and try to get you to order drinks without seeing the menu, they then bring around an iced fish Cart (we had to request to see a menu), and after your meal they bring you a tablet to fill out a review on their own software. The food was mediocre at best, overpriced for Mexico. They did bring a cheesecake slice with a candle out at the end of the meal which was appreciated but too little too late honestly. Lastly, the mood was evening ambiance with dim lighting (the server carried around a flashlight) but the music was 80s techno, very incongruent. Disappointing, better off eating at your hotel and saving cab fare. read more

Capped our trip in Cancun with a visit to Fred's. They squeezed us in without a reservation (I'd recommend making one!) and sat us at a lovely table overlooking the sunset. Based upon local recommendation, we chose Fred's House as a restaurant destination during our vacation to Cancun. We arrived a few minutes early for our reservation and enjoyed sitting at the bar before the host showed us to a window table where we could enjoy the lagoon view. After beginning with oysters Rockefeller, which were delicious, but contained a good bit of shell in the filling, we opted for steak and lobster. Both were excellent, as were the salads we ordered. Service was exceptional and a manager stopped by our table to ask if there was anything that would make our evening better. Compared to other seafood restaurants we visited, Fred's House was by far the best, for service, delicious food and ambiance. read more

This place is amazing! This was easily our favorite place that we ate at during our Cancun trip. The view of the lagoon is very nice and romantic especially if you can get one of the cabana type seating at the back and to the right as you walk in. I was pleasantly surprised with the pricing and quality of the food which was a great value in my opinion relative to the high prices for food in the hotel zone. My wife and I came it this restaurant due to the high recommendation we got from a friend who visits Cancun several times a year and we were absolutely not disappointed. I don't understand why this place isn't rated right up at the top of the Yelp ratings as we likely wouldn't have visited without our friends recommendation. I highly recommend this restaurant especially for romantic or special occasions. Also I HIGHLY recommend our waiter Gabriel who was a real delight (and an aspiring poet with a terrific attitude and friendly smile). We ate at several of the restaurants at our hotel (Nizuc) but they were all very high priced and we enjoyed Fred's more and at half the price. read more

I'm a New Yorker who is incredibly difficult to impress, and tonight I bow down to Fred's- it's been a long time since I had a meal this satisfying! My fiancé and I went to Fred's and for appetizers got the fish carpaccio (unlike anything I've ever had, tons of fresh garlic and just plain incredible), the grilled crunchy octopus (amazing sauces) and six oysters to share. The east coast ones are creamier than the others, but all were worth trying. For mains, we shared the scallop risotto which had truffle oil, shaved Parmesan, and was one of the best dishes I've had in a long time. We also got the chile/mustard encrusted fish filet, which was wonderful. We had a side of grilled veggies, two cocktails, and two glasses of wine for $125 before tip. I was amazed especially at the wonderful service- the waiters were very attentive and gave many great recommendations. Would happily come to this restaurant again and again to try the rest of the menu! read more

Service and ambience was terrific. I've never had such great service or have seen such great ambience in my entire life. However my family and I came for the food, and the food was extremely lacking for the price tag it came with. For example, when I came with my family and ordered the grilled octopus dish, I was expecting much more than just a grilled octopus and a baked potato; I was expecting a restaurant quality dish. Instead, I was given only the bare minimum with only an array of cheap hot sauces to add variety to the dish. Near the end, I struggled to choke down one of the many tentacles I was given. I even had to give some away to my dad, mother, and sister because I was tired of eating the same old octopus and potato throughout the whole dinner. My poor sister also struggled. For her service she ordered 2 servings of clams after being advised that 1 serving would not be enough for her entrée. As a result, she struggled more than anyone else to choke down the very chewy and very intense sea-flavored clams. In the end, she wasn't even able to finish them and felt sick (on her birthday, I might add). My mom and dad's dishes were a toss up because they didn't really leave much for comment. From what I could tell, they had similar problems as we did, and at the end, both my dad and mom finished service with food still on their plates... Other problems that we had with the food was that the bread was too dry and that every single mojito that we ordered was too sweet... and all four of us ordered a different mojito. Even if they sliced their prices 2/3rds of the way, I'm not sure that I would come back. read more

The service, the food - just wonderful. The clam chowder had some unique flavors that made it very interesting - and delicious. The tuna tostada was a work of art. The organic spinach seafood salad could have been a meal in itself. And those were just the appetizers - the main courses were also delicious. We didn't save room for dessert, but they brought out a large bowl of shaved ice and poured on a vanilla and cinnamon sauce to cleanse our palettes that was also delicious. There were lots of nice touches, like the unique presentation of the hand towels after the meal. The only problem is that we ordered too much food, as the portions were actually larger than we expected - but we're not complaining! Oh, I almost forgot - the majitos! My family and I had dinner at this restaurant tonight. What a disappointment! We ordered the shrimp cocktail as one of our appetisers , some of the shrimp were not de- veined , the black poop was still in the shrimp ! I pointed this out to the waiter , but nothing was done . The waiter simply took the dish away and proceeded to bring our main courses. Every main course had no sides included , sides have to be ordered . We ordered baked potatoes , Mexican rice and steamed rice. All the sides came to the table cold ! The butter wouldn't even melt in the potato because it was ice cold . This was a very expensive dinner , and absolutely not worth it. read more

We went to Fred's and loved it. We had lobster tacos and asparagus... Also had Oreo lasagna for desert... Only because someone had suggested... (I was thinking how good could Oreo be?? ). Being generous and giving Fred's a 2 star rating, just for the atmosphere. Other than that my food was not good at all which was very surprising. I ordered the lobster tacos, only receiving two of them, with a very mild chipotle sauce that had me adding extra hot sauce to the tacos for taste. For my appetizer I got oysters and they were actually horrible, couldn't believe they were prepared so poorly for a place that shoves a seafood platter in your face as you get to your table.. For the cocktails, they have specialty mojitos, with all different flavors and combinations.. I got the blackberry mojito and was very underwhelmed thinking I was drinking a cup full of sugar with this weird piece of wood they put in it. That pushed me to order their original mojito, which also contained almost no rum at all. Going on from the service, I was parched almost the entire time as the waiters would fail to fill up my water. I really expected better from fred's, and thought that I would be getting a nice seafood dinner that was flavorful and tasty, instead receiving a poorly prepared meal. read more
