Inside Cevapi

It's awesome that a spot like this exists in Dormont of all places. The food here is authentic, homemade, and really good. I believe the place is Bosnian. I tried several items, including a large cevapi, their homemade cookies, and the Hurmashica dessert. The main meal, the Cevapi, was very good. I was stunned by how incredible the bread was. It was crispy on the edges, fluffy on the inside, and paired very well with the sausage. They could sell the bread on the side as extra and I'd buy it! The sausages themselves were pretty good, although I think I have had better. They were flavorful, but I think I wanted a tad more kick or sweetness or something to take it over the edge. The sour cream was decent but not that flavorful. Good texture and size for the price. The desserts were both super tasty as well. The Hurmashica reminded me of a cross over between baklava, gulab jamun, and namoura (especially namoura) if you have ever tried those desserts. It has a very homey feel to it. It's quite sweet and has almost a wheat-like flavor which I personally really enjoyed. The cookies, which I believe are homemade, were amazing as well. I think they rotate flavors, and I got to try their peanut butter cookies. They were awesome. Super soft and creamy on the inside. Great nutty flavor and not excessively sweet. All in all, this is a great spot for Bosnian food. Essentially everything is homemade and you can taste that. Their specialities are very well made. The desserts are incredible too. Definitely stop by if you'd like to try something new or are in the area!

I ordered large cevapi and triple decker sandwich online, the cevapi is a little dry and blend, while the triple decker sandwich with thousand island sauce is beyond my expectations, which is fresh and tasty.

On my way to Penn State made a pit stop in Pittsburgh. This place is awesome could have sat there all day. This is as real as it gets. It don't matter where you're from you'll enjoy this Balkan gem. Great food.. Ljepinja (homemade flat bread) and cevap plate is delicious.

I had been wanting to try this place for awhile so I'm glad I finally made time. Right when we walked in the owner treated us with a smile. She made some great recommendations of what to get to eat. I ended up getting the Rachel with turkey (she told me she likes it better with turkey so I thought I'd try it). It was very good. We were only sitting and waiting for maybe 10 minutes. Very quick and convenient. We went around 4pm so it wasn't busy at all. During lunchtime I could see how this place would get packed because of the location and price of the food. A quality place to get a sandwich.

Oh my goodness! A hidden gem in Pittsburgh! If you like Balkan foods-- you will love this place! Fresh bread, the grilled cevapi is to die for. Plenty of food, couldn't finish it all. Their meats are filled with flavorful spices. The owner cooks by herself and everything is homemade! This place also has a few grocery shelves with European chocolates, coffee, soups and seasonings. This place is a must go if you're in the area!

Ok, not a place you would just go to unless you are in the hood or want to try some Croation food. Some of the Croatian food is a must try! Stopped by with a friend who loves Fredo's and I have been wanting to stop by and get a Cevapi. The deli is brightly painted with a darker red ceiling and border and yellow walls. My Cevapi was served on a house made bread, with onion and a red pepper spread (Ajvar, spelling is a guess). The bread is moist and tasty, really good, the Ajvar is a little sweet and very good, and the sausage are a combo of beef and veal were OK but I would prefer a little more flavor, the Ajvar and onions were a nice combo. I understand that they do have a spicer sausage, next time.

One recent Sunday afternoon, Kay and I decided to have a bit of the Balkans delivered to our porch. Cevapi is a sandwich that utilizes somun, a cross between pita and flatbread. Inside the pocket are placed 5-10 (small or large) small sausages made of a beef and veal blend. The somun was doughy and hearty while the breakfast-worthy grilled sausages were a blackened a tad on the outside to form a searing crust that held the savory, brackish juices within. Diced onions added crunch and heat while ajvar, a condiment made of pureed garlic and roasted red bell pepper, acted as a particularly rich, sweet ketchup. Another exotic delicacy sampled was a dessert called Hurmashica on the menu. Arriving at a crossroads between golab jamun, a scone, a cornmeal biscuit, baklava, and a sugar cookie, the somewhat chewy, rectangular treat was coated with coconut and laden with honey that somehow didn't cause it to be too saccharine. Of course, Fredo's also offers the usual wings, appetizers, panini, gyros, salads, and the like, but no pizza, surprisingly. For a more conventional deli item, one would do well to follow my lead and order the Godfather. An absolute boss of a grinder, Sopressata, Genoa Salami, provolone, olive oil, oregano, and roasted red peppers can all be found within a flaky baguette that could very well be served warm with butter and pasta. Piquant, aromatic, meaty. Veni, vidi, vici... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNJDeqpD9Ug Terrific chocolate chips cookies were also had, but whether or not they are made in-house remains a mystery, which brings me back to that potato salad I wrote of 4 1/2 years ago. It's so intensely creamy, if it ain't Grandma's brand, they must be using half & half in the dressing, which isn't a bad thing. I think I liked it a smidge more than I did when last I ate it, but I'm still wondering if it isn't just a jazzed up storebought one. I hope I'm wrong and am skeered to ask. Anyway, don't be skeered to call up Fredo's for a wonderful lunch or dinner shuttled over to your place of employment or residence. They're doing something different in Dormont, and that alone is reason enough to give to their cause.

I would go out on a limb and say I've had the best hoagie in Pittsburgh here. Buff chix was good + the prices.

Those MEATBALLS!!!! Y U M !!!! Recent visit. The owner…read moreand staff were top notch and very personable. The food was excellent! Rigatoni, hot sausage, wedding soup, chicken, wonderful salad with an olive in practically every bite. I tried all of it. Can't say enough about this place. They really do a great job and serve homemade Italian food that is delicious.

In my mind and memories, this place is fantastic. In reality, ... I'll explain…read more I'm not regularly in this part of the city anymore. I'd rather drive out of state than have to cross a bridge and tunnel to get somewhere so I only stopped twice when at a nearby meeting. Decades back, my best friend lived right up the street. This was practically an extension of their own house. They were there often. Often is an understatement. I'd get off from work and knew where I could find friends. Here. I'd often stop and pick up something on my way home to the South Side Slopes. I recognize that its been a long, long time since I lived in the Southern Side of the city. I haven't been here regularly in years. I still enjoy stoping by. The last few times, the service was - I hate to say this- not good. I really do hate to say that. The reason people loved this place was because Louie, Toni, & their staff were friendly and made it an experience. Long gone are staff that made anyone in Pgh feel welcome. The last 2 stops in, I felt like an inconvenience. My orders weren't correct each time. One was a to go order. I specifically asked for things to be done a certain way because I was ordering for my husband & kids. I chalked it up to the time of day & blamed myself. I did not look it over since I was trying to beat traffic... this is a classic place. It has to be me. Not them. I had an hour break and decided to stop in. Again, staff ignored me when I ordered. It took up that entire time to get served. It was awkward. My meal was lackluster, at best. My mind wants to believe in this place and that their stuffed bananas, zucchini and chicken sandwiches will never change- but I think they have. At this point, I don't see myself going anytime soon intentionally. If a friend were to ask us to join them, I would.
