The food is great! I had the Philly cheesesteak and I was pleasantly surprised. The guy working behind the counter recommended that I order the tots on the side with their chipotle mayo - excellent recommendation! It is really hard to come by a great cheesesteak in New York and this one was very pleasant to eat. I also came here when it was blues night. Nice crowd, nice lesson and nice music. I was here with friends recently for "Cringe Night," which was a lot of fun. (A few people reading from their journals...some of them were hilarious) The back room is small so we arrived a little early to get seating. One of my friends went to order tater tots, saying she had had them here before and "Freddy's makes great tater tots." I've never been a huge fan of tater tots but wow, these WERE really good. Definitely better than what you'd get at breakfast in a diner. We also had some nachos with guacamole, and that was delicious as well. All in all, I had a very fun time on my first visit to Freddy's, and I look forward to going back. read more

The bar itself is fantastic... a whimsical museum of funky shit you'd not likely put in your home, but works well in a creative space on a well-worn street in South Central (Brooklyn). There's a bartender named Matt who is also fantastic. I'm not a regular, but halfway through a recent visit, he knew to pour me a bev without me asking. There's a friendly guy who manages the kitchen. I didn't eat, but am guessing he'd whip up something good. There's a back patio, should you need to smoke, fart or just get some fresh air. There's a separate room for live music. While in the bar, I was happy we didn't have to hear the Jazz/Punk acoustic singer from Melbourne... who might have been awful. But he also never showed, so I was kinda irked we didn't discover the next global superstar. And that might be the best summation. Freddy's can be packed. It can be quiet. This place is just great. The bartenders are always very nice, the crowd is cool and unpretentious and their food is pretty good. The back room has comedians and bands that play live music pretty consistently. Every Monday night there's a free comedy show from local, up-and-coming comedians who try their sketches out on a small crowd before bigger performances in the city. Freddy's is always great. They have a decent beer selection that stays consistent (I'm a beer snob so it's probably better than average for most people). The bartenders are friendly, the food is great bar food (don't expect anything frivolous and you'll be more than happy), and they have great music and events. It's my favorite neighborhood bar by far. It's super eclectic and I love it for that. Mike the bartender and Bob in the back are great staples of Freddy's. The people that go here make it an interesting eclectic group. From 20 somethings to people that have lived nearby for 20+ years, or makes it a good time. read more

Came here last night at a part of a Brooklyn Beer crawl that Ingrid S. and I decided to embark on to celebrate President's Day. I'm pretty sure that this is how George Washington would have wanted us to celebrate the legacy of our founding fathers...or something. We met up here for dinner with Anna F. as we rounded up our day of yummy craft brew antics. I ended up going with a Guinness because the draft beer selection here really isn't very impressive. Things that I did like a lot about this bar is the overall decor - lot's of strange, funky things all over the walls, ceiling and they have an aquarium! I love all things nautical, sea related and fishieeeeees. Things that aren't very great and resulted in my knocking off a Yelp star include: Cash Only. It's 2015, I still don't understand why so many places refuse to realize this. I'd even be happy paying with Venmo...or maybe one say Apple Pay with actually catch on with small businesses, lol. Beer selection...yeah, yeah, yeah - I won't harp on it, but after going to so many places yesterday I was a little disappointed. I love Guinness but I get really excited about trying new beers and there was no newness here. Guess that's not entirely their fault but there could be more creativity behind the curating of their beer list... Food-wise Anna F. got a cheese burger with a side of house fries and Ingrid S. and I went with their Philly Cheese Steaks. I ordered it with only meat and cheese and Ingy went for the whole shebang which included grilled onions and red peppers. Anna's cheese burger was pretty huge and looked really juicy. My Philly Cheesesteak was pretty delicious and served on a nice fluffy hero. My house fries were crunchy and surprisingly delicuous - not because I wasn't expecting them to be good, but because they came dusted with herbs and parmesan cheese. That was unexpected and I was overjoyed because who doesn't like french fries dusted with cheese?! Lol. I also feel like I should point out that Freddy's is rated 4.5 out of 5 stars on TripAdvisor and also ranked 258 out of 4,343 Restauants in Brooklyn. They make this clear both on their website and in their back-kitchen/food ordering area. Overall I enjoyed hanging out at this bar and would totally visit again! read more

If you're looking to be surrounded by really cool people and art (check out the amazing videos on the TV's throughout) come to Freddy's. The vibe is laidback, very chill, great conversations and they also have live music and events so make sure you ask about them. The bartenders are very nice, professional and make you feel comfortable. They have booths if you want to go on a date which is nice. There are interesting things to look at, frogs in a tank, cool art everywhere, retro images and I can't get enough of the retro videos that they play on the TV's! Just visited Freddy's for the first time. It was listed on Yelp Drinks and looked good so I decided to check it out. It's pretty laid-back here, for the most part authentically and not in the "we're trying really hard to instill a chill vibe" kind of way. Though I didn't try the beers, they definitely have a nice selection. Props for stocking a nice collection of Lagunitas, including Sumpin' Ale. The bar was cool enough to offer Yelp Drinks specials even though it's technically a few days early. So The "Moscow Mule" (vodka/ginger beer) was not bad, a bit light like lemonade. The Shave/Cut (?) was rum/coke and Guiness and that one was pretty good, the stout balancing out the cloying sweetness of coke. There were musicians doing their thing in the "Backroom." I didn't check it out, but the music is totally isolated to the private room so you can have conversation at the bar without screaming. Good vibes. read more

I went there last night and my heart sank. Freddy's is closed. I only found out about this place (How is that possible when I live 4 blocks away??) a couple of months ago before I went on a month long trip. Last night I went out to step into the hallowed bar only to find out I was too late by 3 days! I missed the al night farewell party entitled "What are they gonna do...Evict us?" I love their pluck. I guess I really believed they would chain themselves to the bar to stop Ratner. Sigh. We came in on Sunday around 1:00pm (a group of three of us) after Brunch Con. We had a pretty bad experience. Our bartender was extremely rude to us. (It was a female, she was the only one working- older lady, kind of hipsterish i guess). We asked her about the bar history and decor and she responded 'well if you would let me speak I will tell you' . She also made another rude comment to us about how 'we weren't that annoying'. She really couldn't have been worse and made the whole experience very awkward. I get it.. it's cool bar, cool people, cool drinks, but it's not cool when your bartender is a complete ass. We laughed it off and went to the bar next door ,which was a great time. Ended up bringing a whole crowd with us. read more

This place is as good as it gets! For the years I lived and worked in The Slope this was my home away from home. I used to joke that it was the exact half way point between my job and my home. First, you gotta love a bar that is owned by the bartenders! Yes, people that actually remember what its like. In addition to that they round out the staff with top notch people. Mike and both Matts have been taking care of me for years and I'm still forever grateful. They take care of EVERYONE that walks in the door, but they've always been especially kind to all of us industry people. Second, they have a full kitchen that serves up some of the best pub grub around. If you don't believe me just try the breakfast quesadilla! Service is always quick when it comes to their Third, they've got a backyard! while it may not be very large, its a great place to go and enjoy a smoke. Fourth, The Backroom. They have a separate room for live music and performance. I have seen so much good music here that I couldn't even possibly remember it all! There is an outdoor patio which is open late. Another plus is that there is a kitchen which is open late. You know that guy you met some sultry, whiskey-fueled summer night who, for all intents and purposes, is borderline terrible in bed and wears the same pair of pants for weeks on end...a scraggle-bearded, alcoholic, somewhat chunky hipster who smells of old hair and stale beer? The guy who you can call and have at your doorstep at the end of a long Saturday night in half an hour flat? Freddy's is like that guy. You may notice I have given this guy 5 stars. No, your eyes do not deceive you. I love that guy. We all need that guy in our lives, for those times when gussying up and swilling $7 whiskey sodas at some speakeasy so you can eventually end up at Union Pool with the rest of the sad sack night-stragglers just doesn't sound too appealing (never?). Sometimes you just need a warm place a short bike away where you can get wasted in your fat jeans. If you're a Lady, as I clearly am, the jovial pseudo-rockabilly sweetheart of a bartender never fails to buy you at least a few PBRs while calling you darlin', and you can smoke (sometimes?) or play slap shots or peruse a collection of amateur erotic poetry found resting on the windowsill. There are no judgments within these walls. I feel cozy at Freddy's. Comfortable and welcome, as if wrapped in the warm, musky embrace of a snoozing, chubby bear cub. Only Thanksgiving Day, 2006, after a feast of epic proportions I needed to take walk. While out on our walk it started to rain. Then it started to pour. So we took refuge in Freddie's. Being Thanksgiving Day, the place was pretty abandoned. But the drinks were cold and the music was good and my friend and I were having a fine time. There's a foosball table in the backroom. I challenged my pal to a game and so we slid out of our booth and went down the stairs to get a little foosball action in the backroom. When we got back there, there was already some action going on at the foosball table. But both players were on the same side of the table. He was uh, exploring her back room in the backroom, so to speak. The dude looked up at us, nodded, and then went back to his business with his lady friend's backroom. We could hardly believe it. We turned around, went back to our booth, ordered another drink and dissolved into childish giggles, when we saw the randy couple emerging from the backroom a few minutes later. So dig this place. Great vibe, excellent music, both live in the backroom and in the bar on the speakers. Loved the option of it being open until 4am on a Sunday AND being able to have food delivered. (Though they did say they were going to serve food in a month or so). The pringles bar snacks were damn cool too. And the friendly bar dogs that give you your pet fix. The one bathroom I used was full of writing, and I wanted to just hang out in it reading the random writings. As mentioned by other reviewers- the walls are addictive; you can get lost in the eclectic installations which are throughout. A great find, and if you live nearby, a kick ass local bar. read more

So about how Freddy's Bar is my most favorite bar on the planet. Why may you ask? Well first of all the staff is super friendly, which is always a major plus in my book. They have food all night long, crab rangoons tater tots, wings, mini hot dogs.... they're all good normally and beyond amazing if you're drunk. I could bring my dog if I felt like it, he cries when I leave so depending on the level it breaks my heart would determine if I bring him or not. They have live music sometimes which is cool if you want to dance and you can usually get a seat. Just go to Freddy's it's an awesome place, but remember to bring cash since it is cash only. read more

I'm from the DC area, and we generally speaking do not have bars this great here. In fact, I wish Freddy's was in my neighborhood so I could go all the time. I went for the Cringe reading event and stuck around for some beers because my train didn't leave until 3 a.m. It was the friendliest, most relaxed bar experience I've had in a long time - precisely what I needed, for sure. Brooklyn. No need to go to the city to chase some happy hours and a good drinks or a large varieties of beers. The got some appetizer and delicious sandwiches and some mexican dishes. One of the fastest bartenders I ever seen. Low lights and an old tv playing some crazy artistics videos. There's another room where they bring some live music. It's a very good bar. Comfortable for any kind of interaction. I went there with my brother, I went there with my friends, I went there with my girlfriend. The drinks are reasonably priced. The accumulated stuff on the walls and bar is actually the cool kind of accumulated stuff, not some bland prefab/replica/mass-produced Bennigan's/Applebee's situation that you can barely bring your eyes to look at. Every time I've been there, video art has been playing on one of the TVs. I don't use the word mesmerizing every day, but I'm going to use it right now to describe that video art. read more

One of the greatest bars in NYC, a brooklyn treasure located in South Slope Hipsters, yuppies and tourists please stay in midtown manhattan or williamsburg village.. the crowd here is cool, the back room has great music. they have food. its in stumbling distance from my brooklyn apartment where we all go for the afterparty anyway. This bar is how NYC bars should be.
