It's been a month since I've visited here and I find myself still talking about these. Most donuts here are slightly larger than my fist (my glove size is M) and only cost $1.95. The ones I tried were the yeast type of donut and had a terrific consistency being soft and not too dense. Also tried an apple fritter that was almost twice as large as the donuts. The highlight were the croissant donuts. They were layers of buttery, flaky dough in a square format. I've tried the ones from Dominic Ansel when the cronut was at its peak and I prefer the Freddy version. I found the ones with the drizzle on them to be better. If you can't commit to a whole cronut you can get cronut bites for 25 cents each! read more

Move over Dominique Ansel, Freddy Donuts got you beat at the cronut game. Being from New York the cronut is a staple- Freddy's got them beat in every way- the cronut itself is super light and crisp. The flakey buttery layers is heaven. The size of the cronut is huge compared to the Dominique Ansel one. Freddy's is the size of your hand where the other is a quarter size smaller. The cronut at Freddy's is also cheaper going at $4.25 versus $7.75 at Dominique Ansel. They come in glaze drizzle, chocolate and vanilla drizzle, maple drizzle and French toast. Cronuts not available or don't feel like a big cronut...ask if they have the cronut bites. They come in a set of three and you can get either glaze drizzle or cinnamon sugar. The size of their classic and specialty donuts are huge. We are talking easily can be sharable (if you want to). Currently the pricing of their donuts are: $1.95 house/ $2.75 specialty/$2.75 cake/ $3.25 monster filled. They have quite the creative list of flavors. No gluten free options though. Their donuts are light and flavorful. It's not overly sweet at all and well balanced. By their size you get your bang for your buck. If you want to get your choosing of flavors, it's better to go at the start of the day. Later in the day you chance that they could be sold out on flavors - especially if they are busy that day. The donuts are packed in whimsical boxes that are colorful and say "You Deserve A Donut." They also have drinks for purchase but we didn't grab any- maybe next time. On the wall they also have cute donut themed shirts with popular cartoons and characters like Bluey, Pikachu and Deadpool. There is limited parking around the shop. Otherwise plenty of street parking. We took our donuts to go but you can also dine there in front of the store where they have picnic tables. The building looks like it might have been a service gas station in the past. It's decorated with a snake mural and they also have neat drawings inside on their chalkboard menu. We will definitely be back since we have friends that live in the next town over who are also huge fan. 100% recommend this sweet place. read more

Their version was nicely glazed if not as flaky layered as other places. I even brought some back to my hubby in Atlanta and he enjoyed his VA treats too. Another road trip stop added to my east coast travels! What amazing donuts! We couldn't decide on one each so we went with 6 total to share for our 9 hour drive. Freddy's cronut was, hands down, the best of my life. Already regretting that we had to share it... Service was amazing, even when I asked what each donut was since the signs were missing. And what a cool space! I'm so bummed that I can't have a Freddy Donuts in my regular rotation. I also wish it was closer because I want a donut birthday cake SO BAD. Stopped in while visiting from Connecticut and Fred's absolutely delivered. We grabbed a mix of specialty donuts plus the biggest cinnamon roll I've ever seen, and every single thing was excellent. The salted caramel and churro donuts were the standouts--both were ridiculously good. The Fruity Pebble donut was total sweetness overload in the best way possible. Even the coffee was really good. They DO run out sometimes because well, like I said they make them fresh and do not store them. If you want all your favorites in stock every visit I'd go to a chain store. Not really sure...we might have hit them at the wrong time. It was 2 hours before closing and they were almost out of donuts with just a few of their chocolate caramel and their carrot cake donuts remaining. We took one each and the carrot cake donut was the winner. The server said that they had some big groups come in and kinda clean them out of donuts and they were considering closing shop. Right after us the a few more families came for coffee and they literally closed shop.. good for them. Now seems like a gas station building converted into this cool little donut n coffee shop. May try again if I get a chance. Btw...while we sat and enjoyed the donuts with coffee on their benches we saw a lot of families come in and try to open the door only to be told that they had closed early. There is nothing standard about these - we had a snickers doughnut covered in caramel, chocolate, and peanuts, and a cronut, and they were borderline life changing. Came here for the first time and oh my lordy, I do nut believe how many times I've driven by here and never stopped to grab me a donut. They were having their last day of girl scout cookies special today so I got their samoa, a horchata, and a regular maple glazed donut. Donuts are well cooked. Well decorated. So delicious. Everything is made up fresh onsite throughout the day. The donuts are huge, cronuts and cinnamon rolls even larger. They also offer some turnovers and other pastries. Servers are friendly and will happily tell you the specialty flavors of the week and make suggestions for coffee drinks. There's often a line because everyone knows how good the donuts are here but they keep it moving as fast as they can. If you bring your pup they have a jar of dog treats too. All seating is outdoors. There's a private parking lot and street parking. It's a short walk to the Mary Washington campus or old town Fredericksburg shopping too. For my money these are simply the best donuts in Northern Virginia and I'll happily drive the hour to get them. read more

Yes, I am back. Your favorite self certified, donut, connoisseur, aficionado, sommelier. This location pops up like a bright star in the middle of a dull desert. The exterior is brightly painted and gives a nice artistic flair to the neighborhood. There's a cute mural on the side and outdoor seating. It looks like a converted gas station. I got lucky that when I arrived on a early Saturday afternoon, there wasn't anyone waiting, but many people came in after me. So I was greeted and served quickly. There's a nice selection of donuts, and I decided to go for the glazed, jelly, and the flat cronut. I've never seen a flat cronut, so I had to try it. The glaze was not out with the other donuts, so I had to request it. It had a nice fluffiness, wasn't too sweet or too sticky on the fingers. The flat cronut was quite interesting. Crispy on the edges, a little gooey on the interior, and a nice amount of sweetness. The most disappointing was the jelly. If you see my other doughnut reviews, I don't like the fake gelatinous goo of strawberry jelly that many donut places use. But I took a chance, and that's exactly what it was. So that negatively impacted the experience, and the donut itself was just average. So, overall, it's worth a stop, and you won't be disappointed. read more

Okay, I'm ashamed to say I have been missing out. Krispy Kreme and Dunkin' has nothing on Freddy's. I have always heard how this place is a FXBG staple and it seriously lived up to it's great reputation. In a peculiar location, seemingly an old gas station and the parking is a bit wonky. But once inside, it is cutely decorated and inviting and adding in that the donuts are absolutely delicious so it's worth navigating for what you get. Spent the day in Fredericksburg and gave Freddy's a try before heading out for the day. I went with a Boston Cream and their version of a croissant donut. The Boston cream was quite good. It had a lot of filling and is quite heavy, though not dense. The croissant donut was interesting... A square of laminated dough with what seemed to be a bit of a cinnamon-sugar topping. I thought the texture was quite good. We did also get one of the apple filled donuts which was a bit off. I'm not sure how they make it, but the dough on the inside was fairly raw. I Love Freddy Donuts. The Cronuts and Apple Fritters are the best items on the menu (in my opinion and when they are available). I would love to give them 5 stars but can't. The options are always very slim. And the service is insanely slow. Expect to wait at least 5 minutes for only 1 customer.
