I have been going to Eileens on/off for 20+ years. I remember when they first started out in the original location. The service was amazing, food delicious and variety of fresh baked goods daily. Fast forward, today, the service is lack luster at best, choices are few and the smell in the old building leaves a lot to be desired. In addition, I went in yesterday and noticed that they have started adding 15% service charge to all checks. Unsure why, but that is their right. But mind you this is in addition to the tip jar at the register. I ordered a chicken salad sandwich to go and it was $12.50 (no chips, sides or pickle) plus the 15% and standard taxes. I paid $16. and change. Not worth it to me, and especially considering the service. The staff seemed like I was bothering her and I was an inconvenience. I am passionate about supporting small local owned businesses vs chains but I will take my business elsewhere going forward. We had the deliciously over stuffed George's mess burrito, and the bacon and cheddar and potato soufflé, and or obsessing over both. The coffee was tasty nothing out of the ordinary we just had plain black coffee, but those dishes were spectacular. Chose this spot for a cowork meeting because of the ample space and variety of food options. They do have a lot of seating, which is really nice if you plan on staying for a while. Today, they didn't really have that many food options. They mentioned that they were doing this because of the weather. However, the patrons that flooded into the place would potentially advertise that they were actually quite busy. I was not super impressed with the options ,as a vegetarian, I was hoping that there would be at least one quiche or breakfast option that didn't have meat out of the 3 options. I was also quite disappointed that they didn't have any of their breakfast wraps, which seemed to take over their food feed on yelp. I opted for the egg salad sandwich as it was the only food item I could eat. My biggest complaint was definitely the service. I ordered a food option and a coffee drink, and the barista made everyone else's food in line behind me before even making my coffee. It was obvious that she kept running around to grab additional items that should have been stocked before the store was open. If you are in a rush, this is definitely not a spot to grab something. Above and beyond this, there is a sign at the front that says they can't print out receipts, which is something that in my mind is not OK. Overall, the food that we had was really good. I was 0% impressed with the coffee. I always find it very strange when an iced drink comes in a paper cup without a straw. A very cute cafe near Downtown Fredericksburg that deserves some recognition. First of all, this cafe is cool because the building is like an old church! It's spacious inside, but still has cozy cafe vibes. We tried almost all the cookies, and the Italian Marzipan one was my favorite. I didn't take any pictures of the sandwiches because we ate them too fast haha. But the Irish Brisket (I think was the name) and the Katmandu sandwiches were both very good!! Really disappointed. I heard a lot of good things about this bakery so my wife and I decided to stop by and get some things for our son's birthday. the young lady behind the counter appeared to have a joyful conversation with the customer ahead of us. we stood at the counter and crickets. no hello, f-you, no nothing. we were in the mood to buy out a lot for our son's birthday but the young lady just stood there and looked at us. i told my wife we should leave. no need in spending money at some place that at the very least, could acknowledge you while you are standing there. not going to lie, it hurt a little. really disappointed at my first and last experience here. Maybe she was having a bad day. it didnt appear that way based on the convo with the previous customer, but you never know what people are going through. I've been coming to this bakery since we moved into the area and know the proprietor. The food is normally off the charts, but during this trip I purchased the Wild Rice and Turkey soup. I was prepared for my normal faire of homemade bread and soup from this establishment. Emphasis on homemade - with real Turkey and the fixings - carrots, celery, etc. However, as you can see from the pics it looks like they cut up some processed Turkey and vegetables - to my ultimate dismay! My oldest son (30 years old) was in from out of state, and wanted to try out Eileen's. My husband and I had never been there, so the three of us went to "Eileen's Cafe and Bakery" downtown for Sunday brunch. Upon walking in, only one table was being occupied. We walked up to the counter, and my son went ahead and ordered a turkey and havarti sandwich toasted, with chips, then proceeded to pay for his meal. My husband and I initially didn't know what we wanted, but ultimately ordered the same thing to split. I also ordered a small container of cranberry couscous. My son had already paid for his food, and sat down. My husband and I then paid for our food, and sat down with him. About 10 minutes passed, and they brought a bag of food out for my son under his name. He opened his bag, which just had his sandwich, but waited for us to get our food to eat (we all grabbed our chips upon ordering). We waited an additional 5 minutes or so. We see other people coming in, and getting their sandwiches, and we're still waiting. I walk up to the counter, and very politely ask about our order. I said, "My son ordered the same sandwich that we ordered, and he's had his for a while. We were just behind him, and have been waiting for some time". After a confused look, and some going back and forth (we handed her our receipt), she came out with our sandwich. I said, 'We also ordered couscous", and she then brought that out. She said, "Well we had the order under his name". I said, "Well we were 2 separate paying customers. Not to mention, that's fine if you put our order under his name, but when you brought out his sandwich, we still didn't get OUR order." Just because we walked in together, means nothing. He ordered separately, paid separately, and sat down. I don't care whose name it was under (not that I understand WHY they put it under his name). At the end of the day, they still didn't bring out enough food to our table. And somehow, without offering any apology, the staff member (a younger woman with red hair), acted as though it was OUR fault that they never brought out OUR food. How was I supposed to know that they put our order under his name too? And again, they still didn't bring out the entire order. The sandwich was decent; not the best I've had, and I certainly wouldn't go out of my way for it, but it was worth the price. The couscous salad wasn't worth $7.50 at all. The cafe is charming and lovely. Staff could afford to be more polite and professional. That remains a huge turnoff for me. If I can't get decent service, I am the type of person that will never return. I expect a certain level of service from places that we're paying, not just for the food, but the experience. 2/5 stars. Can't recommend based on the inept, unprofessional, and unreliable customer service, mediocre food, and limited menu selections. read more

Stopped for lunch on a girls' day out and it was delicious. We had an egg soufflé and wrap. We also had sweet treats: shortbread cookies-yum and a chicken croissant-also yum! We stopped by this cute cafe/bakery inside an old church twice while visiting Fredericksburg recently. The first time, we got a small early lunch, and the second time, I really just needed to use the bathroom so I got an iced latte. The front patio is small, not very shady, but cute. We sat there and enjoyed our sandwiches and treats. Nate and I split the Mr. Washington - it was melty and super hot on a soft roll. In hindsight, ordering a hot sandwich was probably a mistake as it was already nearing 85+ degrees and I was sweating. We also got a couple treats from the pastry case - a shortbread cookie and whoopie pie cookie. The shortbread was much prettier than it was tasty, with blue icing and pretty pink flowers. Unfortunately it really just tasted like sugar without any other flavor. The crumble of the shortbread was nice, but I'd skip this next time. On my second visit, I tried ordering an iced malted mocha, but they were out of malt and mocha, so I just got a vanilla iced latte with almond milk. They don't have oat milk, which is usually what I order. The employees I interacted with were all super kind and friendly, which I appreciated! It was pretty warm and humid inside, I was a little uncomfortable waiting for my drink. Good options for vegetarians at Eileen's. I'd stop in again for a to-go sandwich. read more

Lots of good options of baked goods, cookies, breakfast sandwiches and pastries. I tried their lemon crinkle cookie this time and am sad that I didn't order 1 of each cookie because they were that good! I've tried their blueberry cream cheese danish, almond and peach pastry, their bear claw, and their glazed cinnamon twist. All were VERY GOOD! Their prices aren't expensive if you're just getting a sweet treat for yourself, but can definitely add up the more you buy...so be careful because everything is worth it! Breakfast is served from 8-11, but get there early if you want lots of options. Lunch is served from 11-2. To order, you will wait in line, tell employee your order, check out, return to checkout to retrieve your own order if necessary. There is indoor or outdoor seating to use. The $15 price tag for simple sandwich/no sides or drinks is much too over priced for what is received and experience provided. The food here is wonderful, you can tell every part is made from scratch and with great care! Truly the best pastries I've ever had. The chocolate and crème croissant is absolutely to die for! The place is also in an old church, giving it a quaint vibe. What makes this place stand out more than anything is the wonderful customer service. I was visiting today with my toddler and baby and my toddler was throwing a very loud tantrum (she took not being able to reach the soap very personally ). I felt so embarrassed but Eileen came over and offered us a space to calm down in, helped me get my daughter strapped into the stroller, and gave her a free cookie to calm her down. She was so kind to us and did not seem bothered at all. Thank you Eileen for your patience! The bakery has a fine assortments pastries that make you want to come back again and again including bear claws, scones, cream puffs and their amazing sweet and airey brioche buns that melt in your mouth. Warning: they seem to only have them during the week or else they are all gone early on the weekends. This is a nice little cafe on Caroline Street in Fredericksburg. They have very creative sandwiches and pastries. I had a brie, ham and apple sandwich with a maple pecan roll. The sandwiches are pre-made, so unfortunately the bread is extremely soggy and the sandwich falls apart while you're eating it. The pastries are all coated with a sugar glaze which I'm not a fan of because it makes them extremely sweet and cloying. My friend ordered an Irish coffee, not realizing there was actual alcohol added into it. There were no indications on the menu that the beverage contained alcohol. read more

TL;DR: Armed with the knowledge that we currently have, if we had to make the choice again about which bakery would make desserts for our celebration, we absolutely would not hire Eileen's Bakery for our wedding. When we booked our wedding desserts with Eileen's in April of 2024, we were her only wedding for that day (10.05 in Richmond), and after the initial discussion and exchange of basic information about venue, date and time of the celebration, she asked us twice to consider including delivery in our order. In May, when we finalized our order, Eileen again asked us to consider delivery. It was during this time that I ordered a secret cake for my wife in addition to the three other desserts, and I paid a sizable deposit that day, too. On September 10th, I let Eileen know what our final headcount would be, I asked to switch the secret cake into a single cupcake for logistical reasons, and I asked to set up to delivery for all of our desserts to our venue in Richmond. When she finally responded on September 24th, she told me it would have to be six cupcakes instead of just one, and they couldn't deliver because of not enough coverage for the store. On September 25th, we asked if they could deliver after the store closed for the day at 2pm, and Eileen said that she only delivered within Fredericksburg proper. She went on to say that she only took our wedding because she knew she wouldn't have to deliver, directly refuting what she told us three times. When our wedding day arrived, Eileen personally oversaw the pick-up of every box and bag that was brought to the counter inside the bakery. When it came time for our desserts during our reception, the cupcakes were nowhere to be found. Everyone working confirmed that they never saw any cupcakes. I asked Eileen for an itemized receipt on October 8th and for the pictures that she took of the desserts before they left the bakery. The same day, she said she'd get us the receipts the next day and sent pictures of the three regular desserts, but not the cupcakes. After another request for itemized receipts, one of her employees texted me on the 13th with pictures of non-itemized receipts and the statement, "We're working on refunding $18 for the cupcakes they forgot to include in the order.". It took five requests, but we finally got the itemized breakdown and the heads up that we are getting a $42 refund (somehow it jumped from $18 to $42?), and Eileen told us the cupcakes were left behind "on the counter" and that they "ran after the car as it drove off". It's difficult to believe her because there was no picture of the cupcakes sent with the pictures of the other desserts, because the text form the employee suggested otherwise, because Eileen personally oversaw the handoff from the back of the bakery to the car, and because there was no call made to let us know that they were left behind. At no point did we ever get clarification about the "miscommunication" about delivery. There's been no apology for forgetting/not including our agreed upon cupcakes. There was no effort on Eileen's behalf to let us know that we were overcharged or that our order was incomplete. There was no urgency in helping a customer get squared away with a partial refund after having paid hundreds of dollars at the agreed-upon deadlines for an incomplete order. The only reason that we finally got the desired information and the still hopefully-pending refund was because we reached out with specific questions, got rebuffed, and then kept reaching out several more times. That's not how honest, well-run businesses conduct themselves. How many other people were overcharged but didn't catch it because of non-itemized receipts or lengthy delays in communication, or even contradictory policies that change based on the whims of the owner? After all is said and done, the desserts that made it to our wedding were delicious - that cannot be denied. However, everything surrounding the process of clearly communicating what was and wasn't possible, communicating all of the steps of this process, actually getting the desserts to the venue and everything after the wedding, itself, makes me regret using Eileen's Bakery to make the desserts for our wedding. If you choose to have her make your wedding/special event desserts, get absolutely every part of everything in writing from the beginning --seriously, ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING-- so there are no issues with transparency or timely communication or delivery or a sudden lack of professional integrity. Armed with the knowledge that we currently have, if we had to make the choice again about which bakery would make desserts for our celebration, we absolutely would not hire Eileen's Bakery for our wedding. read more

What a find! We took a weekend trip to Fredericksburg to shop, eat, explore and relax. We woke up Saturday morning and took a drive to find some food. We saw a guy walking out of Eileen's with a bag. The outside brioche bun was sweet and crispy and super hot, the chicken salad was hot on the edges and cold in the middle...that with apricot jelly and ham and melted cheese it just wasn't good together. The coffee was good. The staff were very friendly. The interior is in serious need of updating. The couches and chairs need to be tossed as they are stained and look nasty.
