Neither overly green nor saccharine. Will be ordering again; I have my eye on their hummingbird for next year. So...we were walking in downtown Fredericksburg and Eileen's Bakery & Cafe caught our eye. As we approached the entrance, two women were leaving. One said to the other "I knew they were coming in here!" I asked her "Is their stuff good?" "Oh, yes it is!" She answered. "Well" I said "I guess we made the right choice". The reply---"You sure did!" Upon entering, you first approach the case where the baked goods are kept. The assortment was eclectic---1 large coconut cupcake, a couple of small but attractive pies, some pie slices and what caught my husband's eye---German spice cake. The lady behind the counter was very friendly and patient as we made our selection. We bought 2 of the German spice cakes to go. Eileen's also sells pre-made sandwiches which they will bring to your table for you. They also have sodas and juices. Later that evening, when we were back home, we split one of the cakes, as they are small. When I opened the container they were in, I was immediately hit with the smell of cloves. Each cake also had a thin apple slice on top, which we both thought was superfluous. But that cake---OMG! It was delicious! Not too sweet, not too rich---just right. It was dense but moist with a light confectioner's glaze on top. In addition, it had that homemade look to it rather than a mass produced product where everything is perfect. This is a cake to be slowly savored. After finishing it, the taste of cloves just lingers in your mouth. The next night we ate the other one. My husband heated up his portion and told me that he thought heating it up brought out even more flavoring. It had me wishing that I had done so with my portion, too. Based on that cake alone, I was ready to give Eileen's 5 stars...but...considering it was the only thing we tried, I held back. Eileen's Bakery and Cafe resides in what used to be a reformed Baptist church in the Historic District of downtown Fredericksburg with the main church area serving as the dining room and the Sunday school classrooms as the kitchen and bakery production areas. If loving Eileen's sinful selection of delectable baked goods and drinks is wrong, then I don't want to be right! For my first visit, I ordered an apple fritter paired with a vanilla latte. The apple fritter was served warm with a orange zest glaze and generous chunks of freshly spiced apples and the vanilla latte was made from a recipe the owner brought down from Seattle (a close second choice was a spicy Mexican hot chocolate). The counter is lined with several delectable hearty breakfast wraps filled with freshly scrambled eggs and cured meats and the English muffins are made fresh on the premises which is a welcome upgrade to the assembly line prepackaged components at [insert your favorite chain restaurant]. In terms of their pastries and cakes, rather than give you a rundown of their selection, all you need to know is that they are a local favorite for catering to weddings both offsite and even onsite (it is a church after all and there is a lovely garden patio when the weather is warmer) so that should give you a general idea of the level of quality and artistry that they place on their sweets. Lunch offers a deli-level variety of freshly baked breads, cheeses, and home-made soups highlighted by a curried chicken salad in the cold section and a panini-pressed Cubano in the hot section. Service was warm and inviting and with the high ceilings and ample dining space, it serves as a popular place for group gatherings and formal events. Much like the town of Fredericksburg, the selection of edible goodies and beverages reflect a link to the past with traditional favorites all made daily by hand before dawn as well as providing accommodations toward a changing world with creative flavor combinations and influences from abroad. My mother & I visit Eileen's every Saturday to get a bacon, cheese, potato soufflé that we eat Sunday morning while we watch church online. Obviously, we always check out the pastry selection! They were in the busy transition from breakfast to lunch phase, but were working efficiently and managing the line of customers with ease. After drooling over the lunch sandwiches, cakes, and cookies, I opted for a caramel latte, the fiancé opted for a classic house latte and we got a apple pastry to share. Stopped in for lunch while we're all on the C-19 lock-down and they were still baking and making fresh food. Got a couple of sandwiches and a side of their slaw for lunch. The sandwiches were outstanding! The slaw was AMAZING! The slaw wasn't mayo-based, nor was it conventional in any way... it had nuts, berries and was vinegar-based and tasted incredible! We ate outside, to maintain social distancing, as they have nice garden tables out front and they served us out there after placing the order. Food looked so good inside that we also brought home a beef handpie and enjoyed it with a side of eggs for breakfast the next day and WOW, this handpie was something I'll be dreaming of... it was speiced perfectly and offered lots of flavor. The dough it was in was outstanding and perfectly flaky, even after being re-heated! Service by the cute young lady with the really long hair, up front was excellent as well... she was very helpful with the menu and smiling the entire time. There is nothing on their menu worth standing in line for 20 minutes surrounded by a gaggle of unmasked jerks with sweat pouring off you because it's so hot in there. If it's going to take five minutes for the one and only counter person to make one coffee creation then Eileen's needs to hire more help and get the A/C working. They also need to start enforcing pandemic rules and stop letting late-comers to groups squeeze around others who were there before them. Eileen's Bakery & Cafe is actually an 1833 colonial church. When you step in, you go through another set of double doors to the main area. The place offers breakfast, lunch, and a cake menu, as well as catering services. The bakery cases seemed like slim pickings, but I realized that some of their pastries were set on top of the counter - they had cookies, breads, as well as quiche. I tried their popular Bear Claw (which was pretty large in size, but it was actually tasty; the filling of of the cinnamon, brown sugar, and the nuts with the nice glaze on top was pretty good; I think it would have been super terrific if it was more fresh and warm); a ham and cheese croissant (this was filled with a good amount of cheese, strips of ham, and dijon mustard (which I wasn't really a fan of)); and, a blueberry scone with a glaze (at first, I thought it was an orange glaze, but it was just a regular icing; the scone was more like a muffin and moist, but it was not as blueberry-ish as I thought it would have been, and tasted more just like a bundt cake). I also tried one of their cold teas, the Sweet Southern Lime Tea (this wasn't as sweet as I expected and had a very subtle lime taste to it; it was refreshing, and served in a coffee cup (which I thought was kind of weird)). One of the employees that was helping us was very friendly and sweet, but when inquired about certain items, she didn't have the faintest clue on what they were and what was in them T___T (some of the cookies were labeled, but everything else, you just have to guess). There is plenty of seating within, but I noticed that it was just way too hot and humid in there - no ventilation, and it was just pretty uncomfortable. The turkey is freshly baked, but it tastes REALLY weird. And I've tried it more than once, as have my husband and a friend. The service is just horrible. They've gotten my orders wrong every single time we've gone. They run out of sweet tea early and refuse to make more. Found this great bakery thanks to Yelp! I was there early on a Friday morning and there was not yet a huge selection. The cafe is big, bright, and airy. The two choices I made were: raspberry strudel and strawberry shortcake. The raspberry strudel was delicious, and huge - I could not eat the whole thing. The strawberry shortcake was eaten the next day, and while good, part of the cake was dry, part was not. It was as if they had only soaked half of the cake, which was odd. Staff was very friendly. I am so very fortunate I finally discovered Eileens which is the best kept gem of a secret in Downtown Fredericksburg. The best thing about Eileen's is definitely the building itself. A renovated Baptist church, the facade of the bakery is sensationally cute, especially at this time of year when adorned with Christmas decor. I so wanted to open the heavy church doors and have the smell and sounds of Christmas wash over me. But alas, the inside was somewhat sterile and reminded me of a Church cafeteria :/ Le sigh. There's a beautiful stained glass window which should definitely be accentuated by equally lovely seating and decor, but the standard tables and chairs leave this piece in a league of it's own. It was close to closing when I arrived, so the selection of baked good wasn't as plentiful as peak hours. The selection of quiches, tarts, and pies was still notable and I occupied the staff member for about ten minutes with my indecision. Finally decided on a half vegetarian sandwich with a side of apple slaw, which ran me about $7. LUCKILY, whoever made my sandwich made a pho-pa as well, crafting a whole rather than a half, because the portions are tiny... And unfortunately, the taste didn't make up for it :( .. The veggies were standard Subway fare: lettuce, tomato, onion, etc., with nothing striking my taste palette. The apple and walnut slaw, however, was delicious and the portion size a perfect accompaniment to a sandwich. As of now, Eileen's leans to a 3.5. I may be giving Eileen's a higher rating than really necessary but I can't help how much I love it. I'll start with the negative. The layout is a bit awkward. Somedays they have you order from the counter, other days you order at the register. When you go to leave to wait for your order, your options are to walk around crowded tables, or thru a crowded line. Though their desserts look amazing, I have yet to be happy with one. I've tried the lemon brownie bars, the pineapple cake, the pumpkin chocolate cupcake, the lemon curd twist, and they've all been disappointingly bland. I keep trying different ones, determined that I'll find one I love, but I think that's a bit hopeless. Now ignoring the desserts, Eileen's food is AMAZING. My husband almost always gets a different sandwich (he likes variety) and has loved them all. I always get the vegetarian (I like routine) and it's my favorite. Their sides have always impressed us and their bakery items? Oh man, don't even get me started on the Sticky Bun. That messy thing is heaven Something odd and slightly frustrating though is that ever since they started featuring their fall sandwiches, they no longer display the vegetarian sandwich. I can ask to have it made, but sometimes the sandwich maker has gone home for the day. We've gone before at around 3:30 and the maker was already gone. I settled for a salad and some soup but was pretty disappointed (I like routine!). I don't know why they aren't advertising their vegetarian sandwich, and I always feel like a burden asking them to make me one. Honestly, Eileen's could make dirt sandwiches and I'd still probably be singing their praises. I love their low prices, unique combinations, amazing quality, and the fact that they take risks and try new things. Plus living right down the street from them is awesome. With my sister coming from the north and I the south, Fredericksburg is a convenient place for us to meet up. This time we decided upon Eileen's Bakery. I was curious about this place, since I had read it was located in an old church. While it did look like a church, other than a stained glass window, it wasn't an interesting one. You walk in and are faced with a line and we found out why. The first counter is filled with a nice variety of sweetness. Scones, cupcakes, etc. All better looking than the last. The next case has the sandwiches and sides, followed by another case with a few bakery items and finally the cashier. I ordered an apple fritter and coffee. My sister had a sandwich, a boston cream with cherries donut and tea. Finding a clean table was fairly difficult and there didn't appear to be anyone assigned to that task. I managed to find one that was reasonably clean. The apple fritter wasn't bad, rather listless listless. The coffee was good. My sister like her chicken salad sandwich and we both loved the boston cream donut. Upon finishing up, I thought to myself, I would come back here for the other bakery items and coffee, if the mood struck me right..Not an overwhelming endorsement, but the best I can do based on my first experience there. read more

I have been to this little place so many times. I think the food is interesting. But... I am so disappointed in the running of the place. I am all about giving someone second chances but three separate times Eileen's has given me really poor service. First time I ordered Christmas dinner, picked it up and didn't realize it until after I got home that she had left out the main course and when called back to let them know that I needed to come get it, they didn't have any main courses left. So I paid full price for Christmas dinner with no main course. Second time I had ordered food for a baby shower, when we went to pick them up they had nothing, they lost the order. They threw something together but it wasn't anything close to what I ordered. Third time I asked for a donation of a few pies for a charity event. The day before the event I checked with her and she told me to come and pick it up between two and three. When I got there, she said they were too busy to make the pies. I totally get being busy but she told me the day before that I could plan on those pies. I think you're fine if you go get your lunch and eat it there. But just be careful when place a catering order or order something for later pick up - you never know what you may or may not get. read more

Heard about this place from a friend I wanted to order a special cake for my moms birthday party. I knew what cake a wanted from their website, the blueberry bliss cake" I went to the store and tried it is was perfect she didn't charge me for the cake I tried. I took it home and had my mom and dad taste it they absolutely loved it I can't even describe how perfect this cake was. Then a few weeks laser I came and picked up my cake for the party it was beautiful she added tulip petals (my moms favorite) without charging me extra! But the bake itself was different? The only thing we changed about the recipe was the type of frosting but it just did not taste the same or similar. Now don't get me wrong it was still really good but it wasn't the same cake I tried at the store. It taste like I got it some another bakery. My mom didn't like this cake at all. This place always has pretty good food but every time I go in the people working there are more than rude. They make it a point to barely speak to you, and if they do they are acting as if they're completely inconvenienced by your existence. I'm honestly not one for caring about being smiled at or talked to, but it's almost like they're trying to be rude. I am so, so disappointed to feel the need to write this review, but we just dodged a potential wedding day bullet and would be remiss if we did not warn others. Eileen's is a regular weekend staple for my fiancé and I, and when it came time to start looking at wedding cakes, it seemed like a no-brainer to keep it local and support a small business for our wedding in Old Town. Eileen was very friendly when we first talked with her about our wedding, and gave us information to take home should we want to schedule a tasting. I called the next day and spoke with her- she had no recollection who I was, and I had to go through all of the details (likes, colors, time of year, etc) again- not a big deal, but should have been the first red flag. She then started throwing out flavor combinations without listening to any feedback and decided on 3 flavors for us to taste. When I asked what would happen if we did not care for the 3 flavors, she replied, "I've never had that happen before, I would suggest you stop being so indecisive". Second red flag, super rude, but... I scheduled a tasting anyway because we know her pastries, and we know they're damn good. When scheduling the tasting, Eileen is insistent that she leaves promptly at 3 and can only do in-person tastings on weekdays. I told her multiple times that we would both have to take off work in order to accommodate her schedule, and had to schedule the tasting a week out. That day comes, my fiancé leaves from his job in Richmond to drive back up here, we get to Eileen's, and she has no idea who we are. She states she doesn't have our information, she has been crazy busy due to Easter, and she has some vanilla cake in the back with some jams that she would let us try for NO CHARGE. There was no apology, just an explanation that she "was just being honest", and, most importantly, no acknowledgment of how little respect she had for our time, when she had been so emphatic about her own. In reading other reviews (ALWAYS READ THE REVIEWS), I see that we were not an exception. I am so thankful we were just inconvenienced for a tasting rather than our actual event, like I've seen from others. Look elsewhere, and maybe grab a danish on your special day. read more

I've liked almost of the pastries I've tried here. The last one was a small almond cake with a chocolate ganache and a dollop of whipped cream. I was going to split it with my husband but it was so moist, not overly sweet that I ended eating up the whole thing. The honey butter baton, a danish-type of flaky dough was also irresistible. Their multi-grain bread is another favorite. Prices are also reasonable. My husband ordered a birthday cake for me- a chocolate cake with a chocolate buttercream frosting, chocolate mousse and swirls of whipped cream, crushed Oreos on the side, bits of fresh orange slices. Could have done without the crushed Oreos. It was rich enough without the Oreos. In fact it was too rich. I think I prefer more cake than the mousse and frosting. But that's just me. read more

I would give this establishment 0 stars if it were an option. My friend and I went here for lunch yesterday around 2pm. After waiting in line for nearly 10 minutes we finally were able to order. My friend is vegetarian and couldn't eat any of the sandwiches in the display so she had to create her own. The woman working said the sandwich lady left so she needed to pick a sandwich in the display and rolled her eyes at us. Since my friend doesn't eat meat, she had no other option but to create her own. After arguing with the employee for a while, the woman finally went and got a notepad and pen to take the order, against her will. At this point we were so uncomfortable and disgusted with the customer service that we took our business elsewhere. As we were leaving the woman yelled, "are you leaving because I rolled my eyes at you?" And other customers looked all turned to stare. This woman deserves to be fired unless you want her to run you out of business.
