We have visited this restaurant over the years. Nice place to eat and the food is fresh and everyone is very friendly and helpful. We came by for s morning meal and oh my they didn't disappoint. We had the potato smashed with sour cream, bacon and cheese so good. Then we had a tortilla wrap with egg, avacado, cheese. They both were delicious. We bought a apple crisp, sweet roll type thing. The presentation of the all food is gorgeous. You won't be disappointed with what they serve. It was warm inside for the building is an old church so they have ac but it's not keeping it too cool in there. They do have fans also circulating the air also. Overall you will enjoy the place. Eileens is a delicious, cute bakery! Unfortunately, the customer service is absolutely awful. While waiting to order food, the two people working behind the counter proceeded to have a full on heated discussion between each other, while we are standing patiently waiting. When they finally finished, they said hi, what do you want...Okay... We ordered our food, and then moved on over to pay. We were told that we couldn't pay because only 1 person is allowed to ring up customer orders and we should just sit down and come back up to pay later. Okay? If you've ever been to Eileen's, you know the lines can get long, and quick. So I should have to wait in line twice because no one can ring we up? How does that make sense? We ate and I later went up to the register, because I was not waiting in a line, twice! I approached the register and stood patiently while the red headed girl was working on something on the register. For three full minutes. She never acknowledged me once. I finally sat down and waited for a different person to approach the register. Then I went up and was able to finally pay. The next girl was nicer, but when I tried to explain how the red headed girl was extremely rude, she just shrugged it off. Such awful customer service for a small business. I've never had a single issue with a business in DT Fredericksburg, except here. Shame. read more

We had sent an email to Eileen's about the following (along with other feedback). It has been more than a week and we've yet to receive a reply. Hubby and I come here often, typically once a week for a lunch date. We've always been happy with their food for the past couple of years. I typically don't care much for service when the food is good even when the person behind the counter is emotionless. But I am sad to say that lately the service has been disgusting, just disgusting. This was the last straw: We came around 11:10am and they only had a few sandwiches out on display. Typically the sandwiches are all on display at 11am. I ask the lady who was taking our order if there are any more sandwiches coming out because the ones on display were not as appealing to me. She immediately said with a short temper, "The salami." So I ask, "Is that available in a half sandwich?" I had wanted to get a half sandwich with a side. And did you know what she said? She said with her still short temper, "I don't know!" I was appalled and just stared at her in silence out of shock. A good 10 seconds went by and she said to me without looking me in the eye, "....but.... I..... will....... go......check." Yeah you better go check. I'm sorry that I am such an inconvenience and that you have better things to do than serve on a customer at your damn job??!!!! There was only ONE person behind us in line so it's not like I was keeping the line up and nor was I being a nasty, difficult customer. There is some vemon spreading upon their staff attitudes, and I really hope that this lady (along with all the other bad ones) get fired and replaced by some young college aged females. Because we have always noticed in the past that it was young college aged females who were very competent and orderly workers. I mean, these workers don't even wait tables and we have the briefest interaction while ordering our food. Lady, you can't even fake it for those 2 minutes you have to talk to a customer??? You can tell who are the management and who are the lazy ass workers who have an attitude problem. The management will greet you nicely and go check for sandwiches in the back without any hesitation. You don't even have to ask! It's too bad that it's usually those with an attitude problem that are there taking our orders. Eileen's.....your food lures us but your staff makes us vomit your food out in disgust. We're going elsewhere for our weekly lunch dates until you get your act together! P.S. I am very disappointed in the service I received at this bakery. I am relatively new to Fredericksburg, VA having only lived here for a few years. My wife turned 40 this year so I wanted to order a nice custom cake from this bakery. I went in an ordered a round Napoleon Cake with "Happy Birthday Natalia" written on the top with the store baker. She wrote the order herself. When I picked up the cake the day of the party they obviously didn't have my cake and gave me a generic cake with nothing on top but three strawberries. They refused to write anything on top and refused to do anything else. I was stuck. I went to another baker, that gave me a better price on the spot and had the cake ready in 30 minutes. My calls for a refund were ignored and when I wrote to the owner, they did nothing for me. I can't properly describe how disappointed I am. I have no cake and no refund. SAVE YOU MONEY! Eileen's provides really delicious drinks and baked goods in a lovely setting. It's a one-of-a-kind establishment in historic downtown Fredericksburg. Converting older buildings into businesses is nothing new, but how often is it that you can enjoy coffee and a freshly-baked muffin in what used to be an old church? We enjoyed the comfy sofa seating available, with a coffee table in the middle, where you can place your drinks and snacks or maybe lay out a board game or two. It's almost like being in someone's living room. They also have reading material for kiddos, nice touch. If this spot was closer to home, I'd probably organize a gift exchange for the holidays here since it's really spacious and charming. Some of their special latte mixes contain dairy; be sure to ask. Other drinks are customizable, and the substitute milk is soy. Overall, a great place to catch up with friends, unwind, and laze away on a Sunday morning or afternoon. I don't like giving 1's but feel I need to on this occasion. I ordered a cake here over the phone for a special occasion. The young lady who helped me on the phone was so nice and kind, I couldn't say "no thanks" after being told the cake - a sheet cake - would be 65 dollars! I figured this thing has got to be "melt in your mouth gorgeous" - so what the heck, I'll pay. I told the girl when I ordered that I'd be in around 4 p.m. today to pick up. Running a little late, I arrived around at the bakery around 4:20 p.m. and the place was closed. I never received a phone call (thy had my number) asking if I was on my way, everything ok? we're closing soon, I wasn't told to be there by 4 p.m. when I ordered as the doors would be bolted shut at that time. After banging on the front door for awhile, the dishwasher from around the back of the building finally came out. He and another gentleman wanted me to wait in the alley until they figured things out - they told me no one told them I was coming. I asked if I could step inside, as I didn't feel comfortable standing out there waiting while they f'd around inside. When I finally saw the cake, I must say - the initial appearance did not "knock my socks off" as I thought it would. The decorations were just "ok." I got the cake to our event and was given an end piece when cake serving time finally came. Biting into it - (I couldn't cut it with a plastic knife) - the outer edges of the cake itself were hard as a rock - as if overlooked. The cake itself was dry, not moist. Nothing special here folks. Really. Not much customer care (ie you on your way sir? Closing soon....), presentation blah, flavor in this one - sub-par. I've honestly has 100 percent better taste, quality and appearance for 2/3rds less the price at Food Lion. I'll take my business elsewhere next time. read more

Oh Mylanta, I love this place. Now, I haven't been here since I graduated in 2010, so things may have changed, but I was thinking about it this morning and wanted to write a review. One of my favorite breakfast items was the lemon twist (which sadly it doesn't look like they make anymore according to their website). The orange glazed shortbread and raspberry thumbprint cookies are awesome too. I got the most amazing loaf of ciabatta bread one time. It had slices of potatoes and onions baked in the top. I'm a bit ashamed to say that it would have served four people and I ate the entire thing on my own... They make different types every day, I only saw it that one time. I wish they would open a location in Richmond so I could get my yummy Eileen's fix again! read more

The cookies here are good, and I don't mind picking up a couple to go. However, the rest of this place is a different story. The folks who work the counter at Eileen's are very nice, but they seem to have trouble coordinating with each other. Even when I order a simple pastry from the cabinet that does not need heating, it seems to take them 15 minutes to get it from the order taker to the cash register. I gave up ordering anything more complex a long time ago because the chances of waiting 30 minutes for a sandwich or getting the wrong food was just too high. To top it off, even though this cafe offers espresso drinks and coffee, the staff don't seem to know how to actually brew some of these so the quality tends to be uneven. Still, the atmosphere in Eileen's is really nice and if you're just grabbing a few cookies or a dessert to go, it's a fine place to stop. I just wouldn't make it a meal destination. read more

ordered: salami sandwich curry chicken sandwich bacon club (turkey? i think) sandwich cookies: chocolate chip, raspberry shortbread bar, maple shortbread price of the sandwiches are a bit high for the size. thick cuts of salami, slices of cheese, veggies: red onion, tomato & lettuce on a baguette type bread. this was tasty thanks to the thick slices of salami and decent spread of aioli. curry chicken was nicely flavored, golden raisins added a nice sweetness to the savory. bacon club sandwich was good. served on sandwich style wheat bread. husband liked it. sorry, no picture, he got to it before i could get a picture. the only cookie that really stood out among all three was the raspberry shortbread bar. it had a wonderful tart raspberry flavor, and the drizzle of icing was a nice amount of sweetness that it didn't take away from the tartness. other two cookies were so-so, nothing special or to be remembered. the service was a bit odd. all the girls were serving in a timely manner, but they seemed lethargic or emotionless. like they were going through the motions of taking & plating orders -- no smiles or enthusiasm. it was a bit standoffish. the flow of ordering and paying is weird. it was odd to take your order at the display area, go down the L shaped counter line to pay at the register, then all the way to the original start point (after walking through the seating area) to pick up your order. the building is great, an old church turned restaurant, great original stained glass, nice modern technology, church pew in the back room, a bit of original brick work showing through the plaster inside. read more

This is one of my favorite "meeting" places for networking or small groups. Very cool, contemporary feel to this renovated church. The food is awesome and has a very unique and delicious assortment. The drinks have always come out perfect the staff is very friendly. Prices are great and so is the location. It's pretty easy to get in and out of downtown. read more

One of the first times I came here I ordered an absolutely fabulous sandwich and I have been trying to get it ever since. It was some sort of combination of vegetables and a very flavorful mayo. No one at Eileen's has been able to identify what sandwich it was in the many times I've been back since. The menu changes often which is great for variety, but bad if you have a favorite sandwich! The coffee here is excellent. The pastries and breads are similarly delicious and clearly made with love and care. However, I feel that the sandwiches are hit or miss. I have had some very delicious and satisfying sandwiches and some that were disappointing. The only other thing that perturbs me about this place is how slow the line moves. I can't figure it out but even if there are only five people ahead of you in line, it could take 10 minutes to get to the front. It doesn't make sense. Otherwise, the building is absolutely beautiful. It is housed in an old church that is airy and bright. Get your food to stay and chill here all afternoon. read more

Got a small one-tier for our wedding from Eileen's. Very easy to set up a tasting and prices were way more reasonable than if we had gone to a traditional "wedding" bakery. We ended up choosing a 9 inch round cappuccino cake (family recipe) with blueberry compote filling and meringue icing. I cannot even describe how delicious this cake was (and I hate cake) and it looked stunning! Only complaint was the first tasting was cancelled without us being notified until we called the bakery the morning of to confirm. It was easily rescheduled though. Highly recommend! read more

So good! For restaurant week a Co worker and I decided to get lunch here to go, and we were not disappointed! Their restaurant week special included two beverages, two side salads or soups, two sandwiches and two pastries all for just $20! The soup came with some sort of poppyseed bread and butter and the butter tasted so fresh like it was just churned. The bread was soft and had just the slightest hint of sweetness to it. For soup we got chili corn chowder,which the name is misleading. I thought it would be chili with corn in it, but not so much. It was not chili and there was no corn in it, I think they meant chili as in pepper, corn chowder as in they pureed corn to give it a correct texture. They put a cheese on it which melted and turned gooey so I wasn't complaining after the initial confusion was gone! My sandwich I ordered was the balsamic chicken, which had sliced chicken, balsamic aioli, lettuce and tomato on a seasoned hoagie roll. It could have used a raw red onion, but I could be biased, as I put onion on everything! The sandwich was amazing, to say the least! For my dessert I went with pineapple upside down cake. It was adorable and single serving sized. The cake could have been more moist, but it wasn't bad. More sweet than I typically like things, but still very good. I'm a little picky about cakes because I bake very well, so if it's not better than mine, I'm not impressed. Wonderful place, very cute inside the refurbished church. They have their sandwiches pre made so there's virtually no waitfor your food. You go through the line cafeteria style and pay at the register , very efficient operations they have going on here! Absolutely outstanding. My experience with this bakery has never been anything less than stellar. Not only that but I have frequented many, many times being a local resident. Their pastries are second to none, and having lived in Paris for four years I do know a good pastry. Never overly sugary, perfect textures and balanced ingredients. I thought I didn't like bear claws until I tried theirs. The breakfast sandwiches are the best in town. Wraps with house-made chorizo, fried green tomato sandwiches on house-made English muffins and so much more. I know the custom cakes were unavailable when the owners had a baby, but they were still baking cakes for sale. The pistachio is a favorite of mine. My boyfriend and I stopped here on our way back to Northern VA after a weekend trip. Atmosphere: Eileen's is in what used to be a church. It was almost strange to walk into the vestibule but then pass through doors and see a deli beyond. Very clean, bright, comfortable. Service: A little strange. I almost wasn't sure if all the employees were communicating with one another. No one behind the counter seemed to have a specific function, and while we got our sandwiches ordered easily, it was difficult for me to get a dessert. I waited by the counter for a minute, even made eye contact with an employee but wasn't offered help. I ended up ordering it from the cashier, but then had to ask her to get it for me. It was kind of weird. Food: Delish! I had an egg salad sandwich that was awesome. The bread was very good. I wonder if they make it there? I called this establishment to order a cake for my daughter's third birthday. Whomever answered the phone said they didn't know much about the cakes they sold at their bakery so she transferred me to their chef, Eileen. I spoke with her about the cake I wanted and the decorations. We agreed on a cake and price. She explained the cake would be ready on September 8th at 3pm. September 8th also happens to be my daughter's birthday so I expected to have to cake ready for the evening. I gave Eileen my card information since they needed a deposit and my phone number and name. Today when I went to go pick up the cake, I was informed they had no order under my name or phone number. They said they had no cake at all. Now on my daughter's birthday I have to run around looking for a birthday cake. With no answers as to WHY I was promised a cake today or why they took my card info if they weren't going to make a cake. This has become a MAJOR set back and I figured due to everyone's reviews this place would be a great place for a cake. I now know first hand this place is unreliable. I don't know who I gave my card info to over the phone or why they bothered pretending to take my order. I will not be returning to this establishment and advise others to beware of their misleading service. read more

Do they still use a microwave to heat up food items? They create this amazing tasting food and totally ruin it by putting it in the microwave to heat and serve. It is really disappointing because I just know the "George's Mess" could be one of the best breakfast sandwiches ever, if only it wasn't heated in the microwave. I see a lot of complaints about service, but I would say that it adds to the character of the place (excluding rude servers, but I haven't had rude service here). The service is definitely slow, and often don't quite seem to know what is going on (always seem to be in training without anyone to ask exactly how its done), adds to the slowness, but overall friendly. Pastries are really good. This place would definitely be a four star if they tossed the microwave and then a 5 star if the people behind the counter were well trained and efficient, but I know that poor front counter is a result of poor management. read more

Eating in an old church was a very unique environment! We stopped here on our way back home to pick up some treats, and I'm so glad we did! I had a mushroom and cheese croissant which was very tasty. My only qualm was that I wish it was hot and not just taken from sitting out. I also got three raspberry cookie bars and three chocolate chip cookies to go, and trying them later that day: DELICIOUS. Perfect cookie consistency (chewy, but not hard or crumbly) and just the right amount of sweetness. We'll definitely be back whenever we revisit Fredericksburg! read more

I really am so disappointed because I love to support local but I should have trusted the reviews I read on here prior to going. The food is pretty good if going for lunch but the service is just not there. Although the staff is nice they are extremely forgetful. After having to tell them my order again, they still forgot some of my items and while I was there and also messed up another individuals order that had already left and commented on the mess up. I completely understand feeling overwhelmed or busy however if you are that behind on orders and messing up simple pastry orders, something has got to change. I'm not sure if this is poor management or what but probably won't be going back unless I have the time to make sure they fix everything they will inevitably mess up. read more

Would not recommend. Ordered a wedding cake 6 months in advance by owner. Contacted bakery a few times, as they wanted to pick up our flowers and add them to our cake themselves for advertising purposes. I was even in contact with the owner a week prior to wedding to confirm ALL details. Flowers were never picked up and OUR CAKE WAS NEVER DELIVERED ON OUR WEDDING DAY. When confronted the following day (since we were unable to reach anyone at the shop since it was closed when we got to the reception) their reasoning was they had our date as "Saturday/Sunday" and were going to deliver it the following day. The girl working the cash register did not seem to know what she was doing. Eileen's used to have a beautiful display of salads, but not so today (at 12:07). Salads looked old and left over. Soup advertised, but no soup today. Place looked dark, dirty, used and worn. Too early in the day for that. We were driving back to Richmond from DC and wanted something that wasn't a chain restaurant. What a great find this place was. We usually try to visit places that are right off the exit. Eileen's isn't right off the exit, but it wasn't so far away that we felt inconvenienced. There was plenty of street parking available. It is a funky space, inside an old church, and the food was amazing. The chocolate croissant was buttery and flaky and covered in powdered sugar. YUM! The breakfast sandwiches were great. I order catering from Eileen's a lot for my office. Their food is always fresh and inventive, and delicious!!! They are wonderful at accommodating our guests with dietary issues. The food is always ready on time. The owner is very hands on and the catering is very reasonably priced. For me, I hate the overly sweet baked goods that you normally find in Starbucks and the chain restaurants but here at Eileen's, I feel like I'm eating quality that's well balanced in sweetness. I had the upside down pineapple cupcake with a latte. The combination was perfect. Pineapple is pretty sweet on it's own but this cake was perfect with my latte. Price is right and the atmosphere is peaceful. Didn't try their sandwiches yet but I would definitely come back again for the baked goods! HORRIBLE SERVICE and EXPERIENCE. Food looks good but puts a bad taste in your mouth with the service.. The Details: Came in and spoke to Eileen about a cake for my wife's birthday. We spoke for about 20 mins.. The day of the delivery I get a call at about noon and the person asks if it is for a male or female.. Should have been a big tip-off that something was off. It gets to be nearly 3pm and I hadn't heard back that that cake was done. Made it back to the bakery a couple of minutes after 3 to find the store closed. Called left voicemail no answer. I had no cake for my wife's birthday because I trusted these people. The old saying "Buyer Beware" truly applies to them. If you can buy it from the case you will be happy probably if you have to order it I would make sure that you bring an iron clad contract and get hard and fast times. Or better yet just go down the street there are other bakeries in Fburg. read more
