One of several eye-catching and appealing displays in this store.

I have started shopping at this Fred's location more regularly now, and not just when I am heading back into town after visiting Potter Marsh, for example. Even though I live in Anchorage's awesome eastside, I take the drive to this store since the Fred's on Muldoon has become increasingly disappointing these past several months. This store on Abbott Road (found easily via Elmore Drive) is well organized, bright and decently stocked. I especially appreciate the fine job done in the produce department and in women's apparel. And get this- I about fell over when an employee came up to me at the self scanners as I was ringing up my good stuff, and asked me if I had found everything alright. I actually stopped for a moment, rather stunned, because there ain't no way anyone would hear such a thing at the Muldoon store. So, I told him- yes! I found everything I was looking for, then added in my two cents sharing what a nice store this is, especially compared to the Muldoon store. Seeing the smile on his face helped to make my visit all the more worthwhile.

This is a solid grocery store, as a tourist from out of state it was a nice reliable place to visit where the locals shop and pay non-tourist prices for basic items, including some souvenirs too. This is a super market, I think part of the same ownership of Ralphs (here in So Cal), so the pricing is fair and competitive to their peers with good deals when you know what to look for.

I come here a few times a month because I need to get from A to B in a vehicular transport. Place usually has water and a sponge thing to wash windows, room in the trash bins(a plus), and enough room to get in and out when it's busy. There is a retail section to buy oil, window washing fluid, smelly trees, etc... Sometimes there will be firewood during the summer. Recently, I refilled my little propane tank for the grill and had to get it from the person manning the little island check-out kiosk. It was really busy at the time, so it was a bit of a wait, which is unfortunate for the person since they had to leave to fill it up and other people waiting weren't as patient as they could have been.

Been out of Brown Cow for over a MONTH, other than this chocolate flavor. Whoever does the organic dairy really needs to get on it.

Fred Meyer's employees put themselves at risk of infection every day. They are overworked and understaffed and underpaid. They, along with medical professionals and first responders, are keeping us alive right now. The only difference is that they are paid and respected much less by our society. To clear a few things up: Instacart: is not owned by Fred Meyer. If you have a problem with them, you shouldn't put that on Fred Meyer. Also: Instacart workers are also on the front lines, and need your compassion. It's a GOOD THING: that grocery stores are being strict about returns. THIS DISCOURAGES HOARDING, in addition to being SAFE. In times like this, we should only buy what we NEED. OK, so with that soapbox out of the way: Freddies is doing a great job, all things considered. Social distancing markers are in place on the floors. Employees are constantly sanitizing and/or changing out gloves. Food is getting re-stocked only days after the hoarders take it all. Despite all the added strain, employees remain cheerful and eager to help. Oh, and they are keeping alcohol sales going...essential indeed. Let's be nice, and keep it classy, Anchorage. We'll get through this.

We pulled up and I got excited before I even walked in. Keep your empty cleaned out bottles and jars because ladies and gentlemen we can now buy bulk item with out all the plastic from the big stores. They also have empty jars for $.50 if you need them. They have everything from raw nuts, fruit, vegetables, shampoo and toothpaste tablets. We walked around and looked and then decided on a few items We got small jars of a shea butter lotion, amazing! Also picked up some lip balms I believe we got three different ones. Also Amazing! I picked up some wheat berries so I can mill some flour for bread. Speaking of bread, they also sell bread made locally. They sell cookies and coffee made with beans and syrups they sell. We left with a bunch of goodies to try and takes about our next trip and what we will get. I'm changing our eating habits this year. We are making everything at home. No fast food all home cooked. Well except today when we had to eat, but we choose well with our food. lol we are eating clean now so if your looking to change your eating habits, or want to get away from all the plastic and buy local, stop in and have a look. You never know you may just see something and keep coming back for more.

Props to the produce guy. I visited specifically to buy local sprouts. They were selling some new…read moresprout mixes I hadn't tried, but was interested in, so I checked the price then grabbed a bag and proceeded to the check stand, where I was charged more than the price posted in the produce section. I questioned the checker, who questioned another staff member nearby. They said the price charged was correct. Did I read the price card at the cooler wrong, I wondered. I had declined a receipt--I almost always do--so I dropped the sprouts off in my car, then walked back to check the posted price. That price was what I had remembered. I removed the price card to take it to the check stand. I hadn't really planned what to say, whether to ask for a partial refund so that I was paying the price marked, or what, but, turns out, Mr. Produce Man saw me taking the price card, and asked me what was up. I told him. He said probably they hadn't made new price cards to jibe with the register price yet, then he asked if I wanted a refund. I explained that I didn't have a receipt, so he asked if I wanted another package of the sprouts for FREE! I said yes, but I was uncomfortable walking out with merchandise I hadn't paid for. So he walked me to the door, chatting with me about how much and how fast his wholesale costs were rising. But I gotta say, his response put a smile on my face. He didn't want an unhappy customer. He wanted things to be right. Stand up dude. I'll go back.

Review of New Sagaya City Market - Anchorage, Alaska…read more Five weeks ago, I moved from San Francisco to Anchorage, settling near the downtown area. One of my first missions was to find a coffee spot that felt like home--a place with not just great coffee, but genuine people behind the counter. After trying a handful of cafes, a neighbor suggested New Sagaya City Market, just two blocks from my house. What a win. The market itself offers high-end, quality products. Yes, prices are a bit higher than what you'd find at Walmart or Target, but coming from San Francisco, I was prepared for that. What truly sets this place apart, though, isn't just the products--it's the people. From the very beginning, the baristas here have shown me the most consistent and heartfelt customer service I've experienced since moving to Anchorage. They don't just serve coffee; they connect with you, listen to your stories, and make you feel like part of the community. Today was a perfect example. I slipped in the parking lot (rookie mistake--no spikes on my shoes for the icy ground). After two kind gentlemen helped me up, I walked inside with my spilled coffee. Annie, a new barista I hadn't met before, immediately offered me a fresh cup with such kindness and care. That small gesture meant so much--it wasn't just about the coffee, it was about feeling seen and supported. I also want to shout out Monica and Shea, who I met when I first arrived five weeks ago. They've been consistently amazing--funny, charming, and genuinely interested in conversations about life, community, and even my adventures back in San Francisco. Every time I come in, I leave feeling lighter, happier, and more connected. Thank you, Annie, Monica, and Shea, for making New Sagaya City Market my go-to coffee spot. You've given me more than great coffee--you've given me a sense of belonging in a new city. --- Would you like me to make this version short and punchy for Google/Yelp reviews, or keep it longer and more storytelling-focused for something like a blog or social post?
