The prices keep people happy. The quality brings people back. The knowledge of how a suit should fit? Well that is what prompts people to spread the word. I feel like I am starting every review with a counter statement to another review I read - so here it goes. Who leaves a tailor without trying the newly altered suit or jacket? Overall I was very impressed with this place. Its straight forward without a lot of frills or sass; it is a mens store. When I put my jacket on to be altered the guy (not quite familiar with the employee/family arrangement yet) made his marks based on my requests and then asked me to take it off. He says to me: "Son, that jacket is a half size too big... we'll do what we can to fix it, but if you want to dress like a gentleman, we should take some measurements." I actually didn't realize half sizes existed. I have bought a lot of suits at Jos Banks and Department stores and not ONCE did anyone suggest a half size. And you know, I have never been happy with my suits because I always thought they looked too big. So anyway... I got marked, came back two weeks later, tried them on to confirm, and smiled. Dont normally post here, but feel compelled to do so after receiving great value at this place. I landed at Frank's after failed attempts to find a quality suit that I didnt have to overpay for at any of several dept stores. The service was excellent and I've been really satisfied with the suit I ended up with. As others have commented, Frank and his son are genuinely nice and care about getting you into a suit that fits you and your style (also nice that alts are included in sale price). Dont let the absent storefront scare you away. And dont confuse 'value' here with 'cheap'. From what I saw, they dont carry anything low quality. read more

Wow, not sure what any of these reviews are talking about. I brought in a suit to be tailored 2 weeks ago, was given a date to be done by and was thankful. called to ask about he suit, he asked me what the number was on the ticket, what the suit looked like etc., then talked with another customer while I waited on the phone for five minutes, then came back and told me he needed to press it (I don't know what that means). He said it might be done by the end of the day. I calmly explained my situation and he told me it needed a lot of work and he was very busy around this time of year. I had paid 88$ cash for the suit to be tailored by 12/1, and told him my interview was 12/2 and said I needed it by then. He said you can check and I might have it done by the end of the day or come in tomorrow at 8am. I told him my interview was at 8am and he said I need to press it, it needs a lot of work. I said I paid for all of that work to be done by 12/1 and he said Sir, I'll call you when it's ready! And hung up in my ear. When I called back, he talked over me, confused me with another customer and claimed he said something different 30 minutes earlier. Now he claims it will be ready in an hour and said he had a lot of customers in and that I said I could not pick it up and hung up on me a third time as I was confirming, lol. Long story short: paid full amount in cash upfront for work, was told work isn't done and hung up on in my time of need. I will now have no suit for an important life changing interview after paying for it to be done by a certain date. Edit: claimed my suit is ready suddenly, in the afternoon on 12/1 Frank is not a responsible guy! EDIT/UPDATE: After coming back to MA yesterday to pick up my suit and get home, I found out I was speaking with Frank, the owner. I maintain that he was very rude, hanging up on me 3 times and had misunderstood me and talked over me. I got the suit and it was done sufficiently, and the man I dropped off the suit to and picked up from was not Frank. The work was done, on time I will admit, and the suit fit. If you don't mind someone arguing and telling you it's not ready and claiming you said you couldn't pick it up and hanging up on you but want a suit tailored to the right size, this place might not be for you. Also, the suit originally was a size too big so this may have been a hard job, and I don't know how much getting a suit tailored should cost. I may have to bump this up to 2 stars for it being on time and tailored to fit for 88$. read more

Update: I was married in November of 2018 and Frank did all the suits and tailoring for myself and my pack of groomsmen. Everyone was amazed at the quality of the suits for the cost, and the tailoring Frank performed was spot-on for everyone involved. I highly recommend Frank's Custom Tailoring. I had just moved to Boston for law school and needed a suit for an upcoming LinkedIn photo as well as social events and future interviews. The service I received at Frank's was impeccable. I needed the suit within a week for the photo, and they had it tailored to perfection two days early. The staff is friendly and helpful and the whole process was quick and efficient. I could not be more pleased with the suit and it was much cheaper than everywhere else I looked. I brought in a suit to Frank's for alterations, and when I picked it up, something about it didn't seem right when I tried it on, but Frank himself assured me that it was slimmer and that it looked great, so I believed him. But when I got home, I confirmed my suspicion that the suit jacket had in fact not been altered correctly by comparing it to another suit that I had taken to Frank's to be tailored. Upon closer inspection, I found that there were still chalk marks on my jacket too. The jacket clearly was not altered; it was probably just an organizational/ clerical error, and they forgot to tailor my suit. The next day, I took my suit back to Frank's, and I explained that I didn't think they finished the job, but Frank's refused to finish it, saying they didn't remember having worked on my suit at all. I had JUST picked it up the day before, and I had my receipt, but they said they couldn't be sure it wasn't a different suit, even though they initially recognized it when I came back in and saw that there were chalk markings on the suit that they made. They basically accused me of bringing in a suit to try to get free alterations. I pleaded with them and tried to show them evidence of their work, but they insisted that my suit had never been inside their shop, ever. So I was stuck with an unaltered suit, Frank's had taken $70 of my money, they refused to acknowledge their mistake, and they really treated me like crap. The worst part about the experience is that I was a returning customer. I can understand their concern when I came back in with an unaltered suit, but I was courteous and patient, and they became hostile very quickly and just didn't want to hear me out. At one point, my suit was carelessly tossed over the counter and onto the ground because they became annoyed. Frank's needs to update their bookkeeping, so they can better keep track of their jobs, since their receipts are non-descriptive and don't mean anything to them. I trusted Frank's with their advice and they let me down. I was misled, insulted, and robbed, and it was not my fault. They should have caught their own mistake and stood by their work, but instead they insisted that my suit had been altered, and that was the end of their responsibility. Frank's might tailor a good suit, but they could be better organized and more patient with their customers. It was really disheartening as a loyal customer to feel disrespected and not valued. The experience turned me away, and I haven't gone back since. If you do go to Frank's, be sure you don't take their word as gospel. Inspect your suits and coats carefully and keep good records to protect yourself, so they can't falsely accuse you of their own mistakes in the event of a problem. read more

Took a shirt in and asked if they could shorten the sleeves. Guy says yes. Come back a week later with another shirt, and some old guy yells at me "we don't do shirts!" He was very rude and obviously inconsistent with the fact that I was picking up a shirt on which they had just shortened the sleeves. Make up your mind. Either do shirts or don't, but don't do one for me one week, and then yell at me when bring in another shirt simultaneously while picking up the shirt you just did. read more

I decided after starting graduate school that it was time for me to get a suit, mostly for things like conferences, but also since many of my friends are getting married and I didn't have a suit to wear. I did a ton of research online and decided I liked a more form fitting suit since I'm a tall skinny guy. Unfortunately, as I found out from looking, they just don't make suits for people like me. Even the slim fit suits look boxy and huge on me. After looking at department stores and the outlets I stumbled upon Frank's through yelp. I figured if I couldn't find a suit that would fit right, I might as well go to a tailor so they could tell me what they could and couldn't adjust in a suit to fit me, and I could avoid the hassle of finding a tailor afterwards. Frank's had great reviews so I stopped by. The staff there were very friendly and professional. They helped me pick a couple of Italian made suits that needed very little tailoring off the rack. I couldn't justify getting more than 1 suit given how often I'd end up wearing it realistically, but I was very tempted. The price was quite reasonable. Having tried on marked down designer suits at outlet stores, I can say the fabric of my suit is on par with a designer suit, but I paid about half the price of one (and Frank's includes tailoring into their suit prices, so what you see on the tag is what you'll end up paying after everything is all said and done). Basically I got a designer quality suit for the price of a Macy's suit, and had the peace of mind to have a tailor tell me if the suit would end up fitting me instead of just a salesperson. All in all, I had a great experience at Frank's and I hope to be back soon. read more

On a personal level, I really liked these guys. But, I have a suit that looks terrible. Blame it partly on my rush, partly on my ignorance about buying a suit, but then again that's what I was counting on these guys for. I tried on one suit that looked great, but the pants didn't fit. I trusted the guy when he said we'd just go one size up (42 to 44) and they'd take in the coat and that would take care of everything. So it really doesn't work that way. It's all too big. I needed the suit pronto so barely tried it on before rushing out to my interview but needless to say I feel screwed, and at the very least misled. I appreciate the desire to make a sale but that's not the way to do it. Lastly, a coworker also went to these guys and had a similar experience. He had to insist on getting a size lower than what they wanted him in. Perhaps it's a style thing, but they seem to size a bit big and think it all looks dandy. Make sure you don't feel like you're swimming in your suit if you go to these guys. Again I like them on a personal level, very friendly, but they didn't seem to be looking out for what would actually look good. It's all about fit and regardless of how fine the suit might be from these guys, you have to be on your toes or you'll walk out looking like a dud. read more

This is a good place to buy a suit, especially if you're a novice or just starting out. I originally brought 2 suits (bought elsewhere) to be tailored. They showed me that one of the suits was just too small in size, and that they wouldn't be able to do much with it. I could see that they were right, so I tried on one of their own suits they sell in the shop. It fit perfect, cost about $350 (including the tailoring, bargain). The suits they sell aren't brand name, but they are made in Italy, and feeling the quality of the fabric, look of the suit, etc. I couldn't tell the difference between these and the suits I buy from Nordstrom. The only hiccup in my experience was that when I came back to pick up my tailored suits, it appeared that the son who took my original measurements forgot to pin the collar, creating a "bubble" in the back of the suit. But to their credit, they realized it as soon as a I tried it on, and told me they would have it fixed in a couple days. I appreciate the honesty, even though it cost me another long drive back and forth. But they really want you to leave looking perfect so I appreciate it. Overall I would definitely come back here to buy another suit or get one tailored. Their prices are excellent (about $80 to tailor full suit, or free if you buy suit from them). read more

i got a great suit for a great price. I told them the style of suit i was looking for and had 10 different ones picked out that i should try and some that I wouldn't normally have looked at. I ended up buying one that I normally wouldn't have picked out and they had everything measured and me out the door 20 mins later. Frank was the best choice, I got a tailored suit with a number of things fixed and changed for me in under three hours. I heard this place actually right here on Yelp! Based on the good reviews, I then went there and had them make three suits costing me almost $300 each. Since my arms are a bit shorter than normal guys, so they promised to make them fit for my arms. I picked those suits up and then immediately left Boston for Bay Area due to job relocation. I was later surprised to find that all the three suits' sleeves were a bit too short! I guess these guys do a lousy job when they get busy, or the tailors are not as good as they were before. My suggestion is that: Don't order too many suits at once. read more

Cannot recommend this place enough - it's absolutely amazing! I went in at first with an old suit that I wanted tailored and ended up walking out with an amazing 'Bond in Spectre' looking Super 150s Italian Wool suit in blue sharkshin for a little over $400. Loved it so much when I picked it up that I ended up getting a black suit as well and they hooked me up with a discount so I got it for only $280. I was in the market for a new a suit and some tailoring work on my old suits. I was tired of buying suits that could not hold up and did not fit well. Tempted by the clearance sale, I figured I had nothing to lose and walked in, to be completely taken a back. The suits are of high quality and very reasonably priced, add in free tailoring and you have a solid deal. The quality of tailoring is outstanding. I had a few others suits that they fixed up for me and they fit phenomenally now. Bill and Frank are quality guys, they stand by their work, do not push you to buy and tell it like it is. read more

Kudos for old fashioned skills, honesty and pricing. Problem - a nice wool/cashmere top coat with a large tear caused by a hard fall. Not on a seam. Frank studied the tear carefully, said that he would try to mend the tear by creating a seam and then binding the clean edges together. Warned me that it might not work -- could be some puckering and the seam might be visible. As I eyed his inventory of beautiful new top coats, Frank told me to wait on buying something until he gave it a try. A week later, I picked up my coat from a smiling Frank. It was as good as new. Frank noted that some of the buttons were loosely attached and fixed them up well. All of this for $25. read more

I heard great things about Frank's through Yelp and was in desperate need of a tailor so I did walk up the not-so-comfortable stairwell to find a quaint little shop for mainly men's clothing. I went in to have two designer pairs of Seven for All Mankind jeans tailored to my 29inch inseam with original 'looking' hem since they don't keep the original hem. They charged me $28 which I felt beyond reasonable after Saks quoted me $75 even when the jeans came from them! Turnaround time was about 5 business days. When I went to pick them up, they looked wonderful and I am very pleased. Price/service = great. I will be back! read more

I had a pair of beautiful charcoal pants adjusted here. The legs needed to be brought in and the break adjusted. At first I was unsure of the cost ($48), but very quickly appreciated the value of the tailoring. The pants literally came out perfect and exactly on time. A button managed to pop on my pea coat during the interim, which they fixed at no added charge. Lastly, the staff I interacted with were very nice, personable, and actually cared about how I wanted my pants to come out. Could not recommend the tailoring here more. read more

Don't be fooled by the humble entrance and lack of flashy decor. Frank's provides A+ service. I brought in a suit bought at department store in town that supposedly tailored it when I bought it. I was never satisfied with the fit. After reading other reviews here, I thought I'd see what Frank's could do. They took in the jacket up by the neck, and took in the pants in the seat. It's now a perfect fit. Courteous service, friendly demeanor, and extraordinarily good pricing on their tailoring! Their suit prices are the same as sale prices at the department stores and include the final tailoring to ensure a great fit. I will definitely be buying my next suit directly from them. read more

Frank himself has bad attitude. I had a couple of suits altered at his shop before. I did business directly with Bill. And Bill was very nice. They did a good job on my suits with only minor second adjustment to be made. I will have to attend an even and need my jacket fixed in a few days, so I gave the shop a call to see if they could do it before I make a trip the shop. Frank picked up the phone and rudely hang up on me without letting me start talking what I wanted to get done and my sensitive timeline. What kind of customer service was that? This is it for my experience Frank's Tailor. I do not want to come to his shop any more. There are many other tailor shops out there who do good job and are nice to customers. read more

Best suits, service, and price in Boston. I landed a job for a hedge fund in the financial district, and needed to invest in looking sharp. I went to Franks because of excellent reviews, and Frank and his son Bill really took care of me. I bought four suits, and these are now the best of the 10 suits I own. Also about 33% the price of my Hugo Boss suit, and looks just as sharp. Bill told me that brown was going to be in for summer 2009, so I bought a brown suit he said looked great on me. I was uncertain until everyone, including my girlfriend, told me that I've never looked better. And, Bill, how ever you were 8 months ahead of what the coolest trends are this year, you've done me well. I'm returning in the fall for a wardrobe remix. I only assume that Bill will update my look better than Milton's or Neimun Marcus ever could. read more

I've been going to Frank's for about three years. Frank's consistently meets and exceeds my expectations for both their workmanship and value. I buy most of my stuff online, and consequently do not get things altered by in-house tailors. So, I need to find an independent tailor to hem pants, take in/out pants, and alter sleeves and jackets on suits. Frank's has the best prices in town and among the fastest turnarounds (~7-10 days). I'm consistently pleased with their work. They listen, are patient, and do things right. Out of probably more than fifteen pairs of pants I've had hemmed at Frank's, only one pair was I not happy with the hem length, and they fixed it with no questions asked. They also do more complicated alterations very well too, such as taking suit jackets in or out. My expectations are consistently exceeded. They also have no problem being candid whether something is worth altering or not (i.e., if something is too old not to be worth it, or if you're trying to make something into a size it was never meant to be). Can't recommend this place highly enough. read more

I haven't bought a suit or checked the prices for those, but the service was friendly and knowledgeable, and made me feel comfortable the entire time I was there. Wish I got the name of the guy that helped; he asked all the right questions and didn't tell me how to tailor my suit, he asked me how I liked it cut. Old tailors have just done whatever they wanted to how they thought I should have it done. Reasonable tailoring prices; will probably come here first next time I look for a suit, based on what people are saying about the suit quality/pricing that they have in stock. Im dumbfounded and confused by all the reviews about Frank's custom Tailoring! Everyone seems to be enamored by his skill as a tailor, when in actuality his work can be best described as amateurish, cheap, and sprinkled with a lot of short cuts. I am ashamed to have introduced him to two of my friends. In total between the three of us, we have brought to Frank, 3 mens suits, 3 womens suits, and 6 pairs of mens pants. From his glowing reviews, Id expect all of my clothes to be exceptionally tailored. To the contrary nearly all of the listed garments were tailored miserably! I had a seamstress friend of mine give her opinion of his work. Here are all the faults in his work. Men's suit #1-3: The tail of the coat was not sewn to the inner lining. Instead an adhesive strip was used to fuse the edge of the lining with the outer fabric. Why would you do this to a nice suit!? This subsequently came apart after a single wear and enlightened me and my friends to his sloppy and cheap work. Looking at the seams of the inside of the coat, after the lining came off, one would think he was drunk when he sewed the fabric. The seams were all crooked. This explained the bunching of the coat around the round of the back! The pants of the suits were terribly hemmed and the butt shape was mangled. The lining of this suit was sewn correctly, but I can only guess what is hidden beneath where one cannot see. All of my tailored dress pants (6 pairs) exhibited some or all of these issues: -Hem was mangled (wrinkled fabric sewn together) -Belt loops were sewn incorrectly to the pants. -The inner lining of the pants under the belt loop was not sewn correctly and when your shirt is pulled out, the lining flips up and out of your pants. -The butt shape was mangled. It was no longer curved. The sewing job caused it to bunch up near the bottom and top of the rear of the pants. -The removal of the old hem was done quickly and the fabric was damaged. Women's Suit #1-3: The suit pants were mangled. He took the pants in but did not align the new seam with the existing seams and this caused bulges in the pants where there should not be. The old thread from the old seams were not completely removed. My friend had to remove, by hand, countless pieces of thread that was still woven into the fabric near the old seams. Needless to say, Frank was confronted about these issues and he refunded the cost of work and did not offer any satisfying reasons for the mistakes. I have since taken all my clothes to another tailor and had his mistakes repaired. His lack of attention to detail baffles me. This has been a terrible experience and I, and my friends, will never recommend nor return to Franks again. If one thinks this is a one-off bad review, then I encourage you to please inspect your clothing properly BEFORE bringing it to Frank and then AFTER receiving the tailored product. I know you will find short cuts, rushed, and mangled work. It is not a statistical anomaly that all of my tailored apparel had faults. read more

Find someone who knows what they are doing!!!! I took an (expensive) Daks blazer to get adjusted. When it returned my once three (arm) buttoned blazer now only had two buttons. When I raised this with them they a) said it was already a two button blazer then b) said they had made it into a "Brooks Brothers" style blazer!!!!!! aka they'd totally ruined my once great blazer. #oncebitten....... read more

Don't understand the 2 recent critical reviews. I'm an attorney so suits are my daily daily dress code on many days which means quality, fit and durability are my first concerns. I've been buying suits from Frank since 1984 and have never been disappointed with his recommendations, tailoring and price. I worked in downtown Boston for 35 years and moved my office to the Northshore 4 years ago when my wife started to buy me suits from Jos A Banks. Total junk. I look in my closet and Franks suits always remain the standard and the recently purchased JAB suits have all fallen apart in one way or another and they weren't the cheap "buy one get a bunch free" but priced about the same as Frank's suit which are generally an American line which is cheaper and an Italian line which is more expensive but well worth the expense. I usually get one of each. When Frank or his son say a suit looks good or bad on you, please take their advice. There not just pushing suits but building a loyal customer base who come back year after year. I stopped in to see Frank about 2 weeks ago since I need 2 new suits and he had left for the day but his son was there and just like his father remembered me. I told him I had to come back before Christmas with my wife since she always accuses me of buying dull "bankers suits". I expect that I'll been in this week to pick up a couple of great suits and as always Franks tailoring is the best. read more

I needed to get a suit tailored for my wedding and was a little apprehensive having never had a suite tailored before. I found Frank's via the many positive yelp reviews and I was certainly not disappointed. The shop is tucked upstairs on a building on Winter Street that I had probably passed hundreds of times but never noticed before. Staff were very personable and I was probably in and out with measurements in no more than ten minutes. Alterations were done in roughly a week and the suite fit wonderfully. Asking some friends who have had tailoring done before I feel like I got a more than fair price. Also, they sell suits as well for deep discounted prices. Will definitely stop by the next time I am in need of one. So overall, friendly staff, good prices, and quick service. read more

I first went to Frank's in 1984, sent by a clerk at Filene's to get a cheap suit tailored. Frank showed me some inexpensive suits instead, good quality at a reasonable price, and I've been back almost every year since. I now live far away, but look forward to periodic trips to Boston in order to buy another jacket or two, or a suit, and a couple of pairs of pants. I get great service, now welcomed by Frank's son Bill (or Frank when he's there), good quality and perfect tailoring. I've never been disappointed. read more

Recently had a suit altered (basic work) and the finishing / work was very poor. Further, the timeline was extended by a week due to two miscommunications about what was to be done and to which garment ( I was asking for basic alterations not complex work). Normally not a big deal but it all came to a head the second time I visited because one of the employees assured me (like 100% certain) they had not altered the area of the suit that displayed the worst work and that I was questioning. Of course they had, but they did not even bother to look at the ticket to see. Nice people, and very accommodating, but I would not bring any high end suiting to them, ever. I will be spending a pretty penny to have it all fixed. Beware. read more
