This place was a rec from a friend. It's only open 18:30 - 22:00. We couldn't figure out how to reserve, so we opted to show up early and inquire. The owner is the one-woman show for this place. She's eccentric, in a good way. She is balancing a whole act here. She let us snag a table right at 18:30 but told us we had to be done by 19:00 since that's when the next reservation was. No prob! We placed our order for a mixed plate 1 + small sides of garlic rice and mashed potatoes. We saw a fam roll in, a group of four, and they had reservations. However, they didn't vibe with the owner and mistook her eccentricity for unwelcoming vibes - she did recommend them a nice table service serving similar foods up the street. Anyway, she called us over to pick up our orders to bring them to our tables. It was so yummy! A bit salty for our liking, but we were happy to try out her food. We stumbled across this place while touring around in Lisbon. The scent of the cooking atracted us to this gem of a place. It is super busy, full of locals. There are only seats for about 12 people inside and two outside. Worth the wait. Luckily, we were able to grab a seat here. The staff were pleasant and the lady who prepares the food is super passionate about her cooking. We chatted with some couples that were local. It was a lovely evening. We ordered a chicken with mild sauce, ribs and the mashed potatoes (which were divine). It seems to me that they also do a really big take out business. I had a glass of white wine with our meal. First Impressions: the place is SMALL. One table that seats 5 and one that seats 2. My brother found it and didn't realize they take reservations so we had to take our food to go. The Noms: we got the Mixtos 3, which had a little bit of everything. We got the chicken (super juicy and tender but aside from the spices, El Pollo Loco makes chicken just as juicy and tender), ribs (not my favorite, I'm used to BBQ ribs where the meat is falling off the bone, this one was tough and lean, best to avoid it), Portuguese sausage (yum one of my faves), traditional sausage (not a fan of the texture or softness but it was good to try) and skewers (meat was tender but nothing special about this, skip it) and a large side of basmati rice. (The food was very filling and pretty good. Not sure what sauces she drizzled on it (we said yes to spicy) but it was delicious. I think the sauces made the food stand out... you can get this kinda food at El Pollo Loco or Nando's for cheaper and for better service. In Conclusion: worth it to try (get there early to avoid the lines and make sure nothing runs out), worth the quick Uber back to eat in our AirBnB. Leftovers the next day was still good. If you're ok with the BS from the chef, I would recommend (see PS below for details) PS: the chef was a bit snappy and not very nice (we expected this from previous reviews)... she is working all by herself so maybe that is why she's so cranky. I would also like to mention that she tried to fat shame us. The Mixtos 3 is for 4-5 people (as per her menu) but we were three (my brother, sister and I) and she questioned us loudly saying I only see three people, why are you ordering for 4-5? We knew the hours and the days were limited so one day we shouted up about 15 mins after it opened. It was completely filled already. I went inside and they told us to wait outside. The one table outside finished pretty quickly so our total wait was maybe 20 mins. We got the mista 2 which was some piri piri chicken, wings and sausage. While we waited for a table she tried speaking Portuguese to the staff, but they were rude and dismissive which came to me as a surprise. My partner also asked the chef about a menu item, the chef responded, "I don't know where it comes from, we don't make it" which was unsettling considering their 'high' reputation. The staff treated the foreign tourists dining there with excessive attention, while ignoring us, making us leave. I've been here before and had a similar experience--ok food, but overpriced with poor service, especially towards locals as I noticed a local couple dining last time were not given the same sense of enthusiastic table service. The place has been overhyped by popular food vloggers. The reality is that it's very very slow service for takeout. Mostly because the owner/chef/cashier is all over the place and extremely disorganised. It took me 1 hour 15 minutes to get food and I was like 3rd or 4th in line. There is no system or order just pure chaos, despite there being a helper the chef doesn't seem to delegate much to her. I heard about this place from a travel vlog on Youtube as did some others as I overheard while I was here. As a huge fan of peri peri chicken, I knew I had to come here. Since this place did not open until 6pm, I sat around at a nearby park for over an hour until it opened. Silly me though, I should've waited outside of the restaurant because by the time I arrived 10 minutes after opening, the place was packed. The reason for the wait here is because 1) it is a tiny restaurant that has only 9 seats inside and 4 seats outside, 2) the entire place is run by one hardworking lady, and 3) it is freaking delicious, affordable, and absolutely worth your visit. Even if you do takeaway, expect a wait because these meats do not cook itself. Be patient, but be assured that you will be rewarded with wonderful food! (Note that when you try to pay, it will take some time as well) For one, I had the Mista #1 (€7) and an entire bottle of white wine (€5). No shame, I really finished every lick of my meal. Even the lady asked me if I wanted a glass of wine instead while other customers ordered the same amount of food that I did for two; but let me tell you, ya girl can eat and I guess that is why Americans are fat. All jokes aside, the food was delicious and one of the best values you can get. The Mista #1 consisted of half peri chicken, 4 ribs, and a sausage. The chicken was flavorful, moist, and done superbly. The sausage was also pretty delicious as well with that smokey and charred flavor from the grill. I did find the ribs rather dry and had minimal meat on there, but worth a try anyways. Definitely one of my favorite eats while in Lisbon. This was hands down the best restaurant that my partner and I went to during a visit to Lisbon, and I'd highly recommend it to anyone who's in the area. It's a must. This place can get very busy and only has 7 seats, so I recommend going near opening My partner and I got half a chicken, 3 sausages, and 6 ribs, which were only 10.50 euros altogether. It's a steal and I don't know how this place stays in business. The side dishes are really flavorful too. We had the tomato salad, the potato salad, and the rice, and would try more if we had the appetite and were more interested in vegetables. The flavors are all wonderful. The meats come in a sauce that the chef told us to add to our rice and potatoes, and it really added to the meal. I wish I'd known sooner. There's really only one main employee: the chef, who cooks, serves, handles dishes, and handles bills. I don't know how she does it. She's also super personable, and will make good conversation. This was such a great experience that my partner and I went back a second time. The chef recognized us, and even gave us a complementary side dish. You'll have to wait at least 20-30 minutes to get your food for takeout (even longer if you want to sit, since there's literally 5 seats total). Patters tell stories. Every bad comment on Google and Yelp are spot on with this place and the woman that runs it, so please take the time to read them because you definitely will experience this. My girlfriend and I waited in a line for around an hour. The couple in front of us got up to the counter to order and asked for half a chicken and a rack of ribs. The woman that runs the place is the cook too for context. She began questioning why they need a full rack of ribs. She then began to straight up fat shame the couple in front of us saying they don't need all this food. She then proceeded to do a headcount for who wants chicken about 4 different times with the entire line. She told the back half there was no more chicken so most of them left. She then miraculously finds chicken in a plastic bucket underneath the grill. She does a second headcount because of her short term memory loss. She then forgot our order, along with just about everyone else in front of us, over 3 different times. If anyone tries to have any sort of conversation with her she loses memory on the spot and has to ask everyone in line what they are getting again. Each individual takes about 45 minutes to serve for take out due to this. Once we got up in line she says no card only cash. We run to grab cash from the ATM. She then proceeds to scream at my girlfriend about ordering a bottle of wine to go, asking if we are drinking it in the park? We said we will be sitting outside at the table which is meant for takeout, which is exactly what they said it is for. She then hands us our food and gives us paper plates and utensils to go. She then proceeds to say we are disrespecting her for eating on the paper plates that she gave us... So to recap, she sells wine that we aren't supposed to drink outside with and sells us food and gives us paper plates that we can't eat outside with. So where do we eat? The curb? Lastly, and this absolutely blew our minds, she takes two forks and one knife that was just used from the previous couple that ate at the table inside (we literally watched this real time), wipes it with a Clorox wipe with her raw meat ridden fingers and gives it to us to eat with. Insanity is an understatement. Regarding the food, the ribs were dry as the Sahara, chewy and overcooked. The chicken was decent to say the most. What a sad and bad experience! I eagerly anticipated my meal of grilled chicken, ribs, and sausage, accompanied by mashed potatoes and salad. However, my excitement quickly turned to disappointment as I took my first bite. The overwhelming saltiness rendered the meat virtually inedible. How could anyone enjoy such overpowering flavors? To add to the disappointment, the ribs were disappointingly short and dry, leaving much to be desired. The chicken was okay but nothing outstanding. What struck me, even more, was the cook's demeanor--she was curt and unpleasant and seemed discontent as if begrudgingly carrying out her duties over the grill. Perhaps the constant smoke had worn her down, but her attitude left much to be desired. The lack of hospitality was not confined to the kitchen. Instead of warmly welcoming patrons who have been in line for over 40 mins, the atmosphere was indifferent, with some people, maybe locals (?), receiving preferential treatment. As a newcomer (visitor), I felt a distinct lack of effort to ensure a pleasant dining experience. It was clear that this establishment thrived on local patronage, leaving outsiders like me and some people I observed feeling unwelcomed and the woman didn't care. I wouldn't be surprised that her attitude was perhaps even intentional. Reflecting on my disappointing meal, I couldn't help but question the glowing reviews that had led me here. This is a tiny place. They dont accept credit cards. No service. It seemed the hype surrounding this place was nothing but a facade. When other reviewers call it the best grilled chicken in Lisbon, they are NOT exaggerating. And it's ridiculously cheap: lunch €3.80 for a 1/4 chicken with rice and tomato. I don't know what sauce they put on it, but even the rice is oh-so-delicious. The chicken is very tender and juicy. You can add sausage or some ribs, or get a mixed grill for slightly more. We went for lunch as we figure it would be less busy. True, and we were glad to snatch one of the two sitting spaces so we could eat in, but the wait was still much longer than what you'd expect from a take out place. It is easy to see how they can stream-line their work, or an extra pair of hands can really move things along a lot faster. However, I suppose they don't see any rush in their work. The guy who mans the grill will take a butterflied chicken off the grill, and, using a pair of scissors (not cleaver), cut it into pieces. He will trim off burnt ends, and if a piece doesn't look cooked enough, put it back on the grill. He then lay out the pieces into the container, rearranging if necessary. The other guy works in the back, slicing and frying potato chips and prepping other side dishes. Meanwhile, the lady takes the orders, chats with customers, as well as put together the orders: adding the sides, sprinkling on the herbs, drizzling on the sauce; answers the phone... They seem to have plenty of people phoning in orders, that's probably why some tourists may feel that the locals are "skipping" the line. I've always been a fan of well-executed chicken dishes, so take that into account when I say that the chicken they make at Frangasqueira Nacional is nothing short of PHENOMENAL!! The flavors come together so wonderfully that if they were music you'd describe them as a symphony :-) Tip: While this venue is small, that fact doesn't in any way detract from the qualtiy of the the amazing food they serve here. The available seating is quite limited, so if you're lucky enough to be seated then you know you're in for a treat! We came here twice during our stay in Lisbon; the first time we got seated right away, but the 2nd time the restaurant was packed and the line was out-the door and around the block. On that 2nd occasion we ended up waiting close to two hours before we ate, but we both agreed afterwards that the wait was totally worth it :-) Whenever you dine here, I strongly advise that you try the tomato salad and the garlic rice. These, in conjunction with chicken that's so amazingly good that you'll find yourself fantasizing about it, will contribute to a very memorable dining experience. This is a long overdue review. 2020 Pandemic hit. You know the story. Now things are starting to settle down, I will finish all my draft reviews in yelp. Thanks to our fellow yelpers, my husband found this place. We had a bit of a challenge locating the restaurant. Google maps kept sending us to another street. But my husband & I persevered and we finally found it after about 15 minutes of wandering around the neighborhood. Oh boy, so glad we found it. It was worth all that walking up and down the hilly streets of Lisbon. The restaurant is tiny. Inside the restaurant, there's a counter seats for 3 people ( facing the wall, by the door) and a table that can sit 4 pax. I think there's 2 small tables outside too. Most people line up to order food to go. But us, being tourists, we wanted to sit down and enjoy the food and the atmosphere. She already runned out of the famous Chicken when it was our turn to order. Our visit was in Dec. 29,2019 . And she said, she was going to be closed Dec. 30 to Nov. 1, that's why she did not make extra batches of marinated chicken. We ordered pork ribs and sausage instead. The Pork ribs was tender, Garlicky, flavorful , juicy and seasoned just right. It was seriously, the best Pork ribs we have had. The sausage was good too. Since we were the last "seated" customer for the night and she was about to close down for the year, she gave us potato salad and potato chips and something else. The Chef, who I think is also the owner, is a hard worker. When we came, she did not even have help. (look at the line in the picture) but she managed. The chicken here does lives up to its hype. My boyfriend wanted to try Piri Piri chicken before leaving Lisbon so a quick research led us here. It's widely known that Frangasqueira Nacional has the best barbecue chicken in Lisbon and I agree. We arrived early and were able to place our order without much waiting. At the counter, an order of the whole chicken and a half rack of ribs were placed with the female chef. The chicken was simple but the sauce that it was covered in was absolutely tasty. With a kick of zing from the spices and bits of garlic, it was the sauce that I want to be doused in.The chicken while slightly smoky maintained its moisture all throughout. Juices were flowing out regardless of the piece you eat. The chicken deserves a 5/5. The ribs in my humble opinion were average. It wasn't that memorable as it lacked in flavor. I also had it covered in sauce but it just didn't sing to me. Big respect to the female chef for juggling 10 millions duties all at once. We arrived on a weekday and it was surprisingly busy. She was grilling while taking orders, packing food, cleaning, and serving those who were eating inside. This has to be one of the most inefficiently run operations in the world with long wait times but people still line up happily. The chicken is that good and the value is crazy. We had a whole chicken , ribs multiple beers, and 4 sides for under 30 Euro. The chicken is so moist and tender and has some nice heat to it if you get the spicy. She douses on some kind of garlicky sauce that would be incredible on anything. Definitely worth checking out, we went twice both days we made it a point to go about 15 or 20 min before opening to get a seat. After reading the great reviews for Frangasqueira Nacional, I decided to change my original plans for lunch and eat here instead. It was in a perfect location despite being on a side street and conveniently in walking distance from my Airbnb. I was instantly greeted and was able to place my order right away. I ordered the Mix 2 which had a combination of 1/2 chicken, 3 sausages, 6 ribs for 9,30€ and the tomato and oregano salad for 1,70€. The meal was great especially for the price, it was definitely a good value. My favorite were the ribs and sausage (although the chicken was tasty as well). The meat was tender, juicy, and made you want to eat and eat. The tomato and oregano salad was simple yet fresh and flavorful. I would definitely order again. Food was great and very tasteful. By far, one of the best places we ate at in Lisbon. The restaurant was a one-man-show and I think the owner was a bit overwhelmed as a number of people arrived at the same time (all tourist and it's an extremely small place with only 4 tables). I ordered an American portion, for 2 people, and she questioned how many people were eating (I found that a bit rude as we were paying for it, regardless). She started packing our food to go, so I told her we were eating in and she got frustrated with me. She rudely said, where are you going go sit, I only have one reservation. So I informed her that my husband already had a table outside. She slammed plates and cutlery down and yelled at everyone saying, no more walk-ins. She then proceeded to get mad at the next customer when she tried to place her order. My recommendation is to make a reservation for 7:00pm before it get busy or carry it out and eat at the park a few streets down. Also, it's cash only. read more

This is the best meal I had in Lisbon. Tiny place with like 6 seats total. There were 3 of us and ordered the 2nd meal with chicken, ribs and sausage. It was more than enough food and was €10,50! The wine was €1,50 and sides were similar. The chicken (add spicy sauce) was incredible but the ribs were the star. We were full but got more ribs anyway. It's a one woman show and she cooks to order so it can take a few minutes. She talked us out of the more expensive meal option and I'm glad she did because it was a lot of food. I will definitely go back. Tips: it's small, so carry out might be easier? But if possible to dine in, the food comes in waves as it's ready and it's worth any wait. read more
