When I was a little girl, going for ice cream at Custard's Last Stand was super exciting. I have so many memories of that little place in Amherst I used to ride my bike to on warm summer nights--until one day it became Anderson's. I love Anderson's, but it doesn't have the same overal feel as Custard's did. It is hard to explain, but I can even still remember the distinct Custard's smell as you'd walk inside. Fran-Ceil's was introduced to me by my boyfriend, not long ago, who is from the South Buffalo area. I feel like what Fran-Ceil's is to him is like what Custard's was to me back then. It is an old school, local business, which is always busy because of their delicious homemade custard. I love it, especially because they have a nice variety of ice cream flavors for really good prices. Very disappointed with their custard over the past few years. Having lived around the corner from them for the past 60 years, it saddens me to say their custard isnt what it used to be. It has lost its flavorful creamy taste and texture. Dont know what they are doing different, but it tastes just real cold like dairy queen with no flavor. Found new place called green acres. Definitely worth taking the 20 minute ride for that custard than the 2 minute ride for Fran-ceil's. read more

A couple of friends and I stopped by at Fran and Ceils after an event at the Botanical Gardens. They offer various flavors of Perry's ice creams and also have a few frozen custard flavors. I believe they are known for their frozen custard. They usually habe a featured custard flavor, the day we went was "cotton candy." They also have vegan options. I decided to go with a plain vanilla custard on a cone. It was really good. The portions are huge. I got a medium and couldn't finish the entire cone. I absolutely love it here! I look forward to the new custard flavors each week. I always get the custard of the week twisted with vanilla. My favorite was the cotton candy custard. The chocolate and vanilla custard is amazing too. They also offer a weekly sherbet and dole whip. There is just something about supporting a local business open its doors or screen windows every summer. Some of my best memories surround this place. There are all kinds of other treats, but you just can't go wrong with a simple twist cone in chocolate/vanilla or one of their daily custard flavors (the pistachio/vanilla twist is divine!). They are cash only; order from the window and take your dessert to the car or one of the nearby picnic tables. Terrible service, me and my gf arrived from the beach and received dirty looks from teenage girl working as soon as we arrived. Both men who ordered before of us were not wearing face masks (due to covid-19) and were still served, while we walked up and ordered but then the man said that he could not serve us without masks on. I chose the pistachio and it was deep in flavor and perfectly creamy! My only complaint was the inconsistency in the serving size. I mean the custard is ok to good but the service has been terrible several times. I can't tell you how many times I say "in a cup" or "to go" and I'm handed a cone instead of a cup/bowl. One time I saw one of the teenagers yelling at an old lady. I mean the old bag had it coming but still you can't do that in this business. Sorry :( to be the dissenter but the high ratings must be partly due to the fact that most of the reviewers live/lived in South-towns & this is a fond memory for them. With all the hype, I took advantage of yesterdays beautiful weather, put the top down and drove the mileage out there for this "unforgettable" custard. "Meh. I've experienced better" is so succinct for my feelings on this roadside ice cream spot. It pretty much tasted like ice milk to me. I would rate DQ above them alone and Anderson's is way above. Actually, the ABSOLUTE BEST custard I've ever had [I'm old so I've had the really good stuff from the 50's & 60's to compare it to] was just a few years ago in fact @ the ice cream parlor behind "The New Whistle Pig" [now closed] in Niagara Falls. Sorry I cannot remember the name, but THAT custard was CUSTARD! The owner explained to me why it was so phenomenal - high butterfat content and immaculately clean machines! I felt so bad when they closed, mostly and probably due to The New Whistle Pigs closing which blocked them off.
