Talacona Gallery and Studio - Fine Art Gallery in Benicia by Artist Maria Talacona. Her work has been celebrated for over 20 years.

Talacona Gallery and Studio

Maria Talacona is an amazing artist. Her studio in Benicia on Columbus Parkway was always my…read morefavorite. She went to Sonoma for many years where there was a greater demand for fine art but now she is back to Benicia on First Street. Her work is wall to wall amazing and honestly, I have so many of her pieces and I actually just bought another piece that I am waiting to be framed. I always tell her that I can't think of anything else I would want on my walls. I have a lot of art from Jim Buckles, Eyvind Earle, and Caroline Young but I must confess I have more works by Maria Talacona than any other artist. Her works are so near and dear to my heart because she is local and I know her so well. She mainly does fine art commissions for the Napa Valley Wine Community but here in Benicia, she is well known for her florals, grapes, and olives. At her studio downtown, she has a wonderful kitchen line with plates, towels and oven mitts that were in all the stores like Kohls, Target, and Walmart. She has won many awards but she gives back to the community by teaching Paint Nights on Friday Nights from 6 pm to 9 pm. I went to her Friday night class and it was super fun and I did really well. She does a Family Fun watercolor workshop three Saturdays a month (she is closed the 2nd Saturday of each month). They are super affordable as well. Anyway, I am her number one fan. Anyway, I hope Maria captured all I had to say when I wrote a testimonial for her website but also I just had to share again how I feel about her awesome work.

My wife and I had a very disappointing experience at Virtual Framing in the Solano Town Center. She…read morefound a poster she liked, displayed in a clear plastic holder with multiple copies, and began pulling one out--assuming, as anyone might, that they were available for purchase directly from the display. Instead of a polite correction or guidance, the owner abruptly stormed out from the back and shouted "WHOA WHOA WHOA! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!"--startling both of us. My wife apologized immediately and tried to explain we weren't aware there was a specific process, but that didn't stop him from continuing to raise his voice and snatching the poster from her hands. He then gave us an unnecessarily condescending lecture about how "it's really just common sense." Even after my wife apologized again and said she would remember for next time, he kept going. His tone was rude, patronizing, and completely disproportionate to the situation. We decided to leave without buying anything because we simply didn't want to be treated that way. To the owner: if you don't want customers touching merchandise, that's completely understandable--but then clearly post signs asking people not to handle items without assistance. Don't assume people know your process, and definitely don't talk down to them when they make a simple mistake. Your behavior was unprofessional, and it ruined what should have been a simple, pleasant shopping experience. We won't be returning, and we sincerely hope others are treated with more basic courtesy and respect than we were.

Another time I came for the curbside pickup and I had to call inside the store to make sure the curbside pickup was available. The staff was very apologetic and quick to bring my order.

Michael's prices are pretty high, IMO, despite the $$ rating. But what REALLY gets me is, TWO of it's stores display as "Gateway", so it's very easy to make mistakes, since the system gleefully changes the store I am shopping (Vallejo Gateway), even when I am logged in, to what IT wants (Fairfield Gateway), and I end up driving first to the Vallejo store (7 miles) and then angrily to Fairfield store (another 23 miles!) to get my item. I only go to Michaels when I need my item today, and by the time I drive to Vallejo and Fairfield, I should have ordered from Amazon! Second HUGE annoyance, and this is the BIG one, whichever store I order from to drive out and pickup items, the store will cancel part or even all of my items without any notice at all. "Your order is ready to be picked up!" and then sometimes I have driven 30 miles to disappointment and anger. Yes, at this point it is anger. Yesterday, I ordered a few things from Amazon and this supply I needed yesterday from Michael's: Jumbo Compressed Charcoal ($3.74) the only thing I needed. But, why drive out for a $4 thing? So I ordered White Compressed Charcoal ($3.74), Vine charcoal sticks ($3.74), and blending tortillons ($1.79), just to make the trip worthwhile (as if!). Got there, grabbed stuff, left quickly, because I was late for an appointment. At home, I see I only got the white charcoal and the blending sticks, and a note on the slip "LM called @2/6 1 p.m." "refund" by the two items I didn't get, and "see cashier". I checked my credit card today, and apparently I have to go back to Michaels and get a cashier to refund me. Man, I really hate Michaels. Grrrr Edit: I did find days later a voicemail from the clerk at Michaels apologizing and informing. After the last 2 iphone updates, I have not been notified of voicemails, and I only came upon it by accident today, trying to find a contact. Customer service via email has attempted to be helpful, lamely, asking for information I already gave and not doing anything about it. What a hassle for about $7. So I'm going to try taking the receipt to the store.
