The results are super fresh right out of the hot oil bath doughnuts full a warmth and strong flavors to excite your tongue. No wonder it is an institution in this part of the world. Their colors are mostly deep pastel, matched by strong flavors that really stand out. Perhaps because we stopped by on a snowy morning in early December, our box of a half dozen warmed my hands as I walked back to the car parked right in front. We drove a ways before opening the lavender box to sample the first ones. We found them soft and friable, so that they were difficult to pick up in one piece. They fell apart on touching, requiring us to remove them carefully to avoid further crumble onto car seats and floor. Should have grabbed more napkins. Still, despite the minor mess, they did excite the tongue due to their strong flavors and uber freshness. Eaten with hot Java as washdown, it was self explanatory why they were so popular and had been around in the same location of Coastal Highway for decades. Ownership still makes and serves the doughnuts, and was happy to shoot the sh*t with this stranger while working the assembly line. These cake dough boys are the real deal. As we entered the line was pretty long but that's how you know it's a good spot. This was my first time at the prune. One would say I've been depruned. I ordered a BEC, an Eskimo donut and an iced coffee. My husband ordered a OC sand donut a SEC and an iced coffee. Both donuts came out pipping hot. Steamy warm soft goodness was waiting inside. I visited this donut shop while on a recent trip to Delaware. When searching for coffee and donut shops that are in the area, I can across this place on a list of Eater's best donut shops in America. Needless to say, I was excited to try it and just happen to be traveling to a place that was so highly regarded. While I liked this donut shop a lot, I can't say it's one of America's best. Don't get me wrong, they have very good donuts and it's a must visit. They have a wide variety of interesting flavors. The principle thing they do that makes their donuts yummy is they are all fresh made. The donuts are made in front of your eyes with a donut machine, then dipped into a sauce that gives the donut its flavor. This makes the donuts warm, something that is usually found at a donut shop. The down side of this is that service is slow. When I went, there was only staff member for entire the donut shop, and took him painfully long to make and bag all of the orders. I went during the off season in the winter, so it's possible they have more workers during the high season, so service might be faster then. Also, be warned the donuts are super sweet. The ambiance is perfect for the beach town that it is in. One weird aspect is there is a lot of Dale Earnhardt memorabilia in the donut shop. You simply can't go wrong with ability to choose between pre-specified flavor combinations or to make your own concoction with 19 glaze and 13 toppings to choose from. The inside is very eclectic and even has a small gift shop with merch. Despite being made-to-order for every patron the service was extremely fast and all of the donuts where hot and delicious. These are some good donuts! I got 4 and 2 iced coffee's which was $36 and I chose to give the group a tip. It was an early Saturday morning but the staff was friendly. The donuts are hand-dipped by order. I didn't realize that so I waited a few hours for them to dry and be less messy to eat, although enjoying while hot seems to be the thing to do. After studying the menu for a bit I decided on a chocolate coated donut with rainbow sprinkles and my husband had the French Toast donut. There's peanut and mint and margarita and oh so many sprinkles. There's so many options it'll make your head spin. These are not dainty artisanal pastries from Williamsburg or West Hollywood. These are sugary bombs of fried unhealthiness. That's what you're there for. They have a tacky, caricatured, garish colored motif, both the food and the decor. This place is consistent. It does not back down. Minor gripe- the coffee's pretty meh. Good to wash down your donut though. However, overall, 9.5/10, highly recommended. Worth checking out. Also - there's a review down below that the wait is too long. You know how you know a restaurant is good? You have to wait really long. As far as doughnuts go, no one beats Fractured Prune. My wife and I miss the location near our house and happened to be in Rehoboth, so we of course had to get some! There are so many flavors you will probably want to try them all, but my absolute fav is the OC Sand, which has a few similar variations which are all good. The folks behind the counter were happy to give recommendations and didn't rush us; they simply asked how many we wanted so they could start frying them. That's right - fried fresh to order. Lines of people mean you have a demand, but your poorly trained staff(who also look miserable) aren't getting it done. They have about 30 rubermaids of different toppings for doughnuts behind the counter; looks cheap and god knows how long it's been there. Coffee tasted like water and served in a plain styrofoam cup?
