Ice cream shops are always pretty expensive, especially in a beach town. But the ice cream here is good, and the line moves quickly. The people working behind the counter were considerate about my toddler wanting a cone but inevitably needing a cup for the ice cream to melt into. The stairs and crowded ramp are not great for strollers or wheelchairs, but there is a ramp you can access from the side street. There was always a family blocking the the way onto the ramp for pictures or just hanging out, so you'll probably have to ask them to move. read more

The ice cream here was some of the best I've had in a very long time. Homemade and local. I'd highly recommend getting a waffle cone, which they also make in house. The line was a bit long but moved quickly, and the staff were great. I don't think you could go wrong in terms of flavor. We'd return in the future. read more

when I say this place gives you the largest scoops I've ever seen, I'm not exaggerating. I thought my friend ordered two scoops so I followed suit, just to get a pint of ice cream! Each "scoop" of ice cream is really 2+ scoops, so definitely take advantage of their mini scoop option. While I couldn't finish my bowl, I enjoyed every bite I took. My friends and I shared their cherry vanilla, pineapple flavor, and cookies and cream. Every flavor was so creamy and smooth. Definitely recommend going to this place amongst the other options. A wonderful ice cream shop along the main drag in Dewey. The long lines speak for themselves, but service is quick and efficient. The ice cream itself is fantastic with around 15 flavors and plenty of toppings. The serving sizes are very generous. Definitely recommend! My only feedback: they use styrofoam cups. The ice cream here is great! The lines might look a little intimidating when you approach the place, but it only took us about ten minutes from standing outdoors to the counter. Great ice cream - a must if you are in the Dewey/Rehoboth Beach area! We have driven past the farm Vanderwende sources their dairy from many times when driving to the Delaware beaches, but had never stopped. For a family vacation week, we ended up in Dewey instead of Rehoboth, just a two block walk from Vanderwende's - definitely dangerous once we realized how delicious their ice cream is! The big hit for my wife and I was Birthday Cake, a creamy, vanilla cake-y flavor with rainbow sprinkles (don't be scared by it's blue hue!). Cookie dough was also tasty - packed with chocolate chips and chunks of cookie dough. You really can't go wrong with this extremely tasty and creamy ice cream - we will definitely be visiting the next chance we get! read more

During my first trip to Dewey I spotted this cute little ice cream shop and decided I had to check it out. There was a line, which is expected on a Saturday in the summer, but it moved rather quickly. The staff was happy to let you try samples, and their scoops were extremely generous. There were 20 some homemade flavors to pick from, everything from your classics to unique creations like Berry Cheesecake. I stuck with the classic Chocolate, and it was delicious. Some of the best ice cream I've had. Seating here was limited to one large table, so Vanderwendes seems to be more of a grab and go place. read more

This place was AMAZING!! They have this thing now where they can make your ice cream into a cold brew shake, so of course I had to take that option. My almost 2yo son is allergic to soy. We called ahead to see if the ice cream contains soy, and they assured us (twice) that it does not. We walked over, TRIPLE-checked about the soy contents, and ordered two ice creams. After giving my son maybe 4 or 5 spoonfuls, they casually informed us that there is, in fact, soy. No apologies, no explanations as to why they misinformed us, nothing. I had to drag my kid out hysterically crying. I'm only giving one more star to be fair because the ice cream was fine (my 4yo was satisfied with it). But how freaking difficult is it to check a damn label to be considerate of your customers? Deliciousness blocks from the beach. We rolled in here before heading back to DC per his suggestion, and boy, was I a happy camper! This place is quaint and very mint green looking on the inside with wall to wall aquaish/mint green paint with purple accents. It's a family owned business that has been open 3 years. We showed up on a day that was still in the off season, but it was warming up to kicking off very soon. They had limited toppings and drink options. They were plentiful in their products though. We got some very yummy ice cream. They offer eccentric flavors and traditional. I opted for a mix of maple walnut and salted caramel while he got their cherry cheesecake. Both were delicious and reasonably priced for the amount you get. My best suggestion is to get your order and split. I can imagine this place gets busy during the main season, and there won't be a ton of room to spare when trying to get your ice cream and lingering inside. read more

I would love to actually go in and get an ice cream cone when I'm off work at 9:30 but the past 2 times I've tried to go they have closed early. I'm bummed after a disappointing visit here tonight and after being such a longtime fan. I understand that not everyone takes covid seriously, and I really appreciate the employees wearing masks, but it's disappointing to see your food served on a counter where a female customer is not wearing a mask and having an animated conversation with employees OVER YOUR ICE CREAM AS IT IS BEING SERVED. OK so we saw this place during the day (early) not really in the mood for ice cream but we will come back later in the day. So after dinner lets go have a nice desert of ice cream. I walked up and I could see people inside. I believe it was about 8:30 - 9:00 PM but there were no hours on the door. Just then a another group of people came to get ice cream so now there are about 10 of us standing on the porch. i told the other group "its closed" Some one of the people in the group knocked on the window, now another couple was outside so there probably was a good $50 in sales if not more. We visited here for an after dinner ice cream during family vacation at a condo close by. The ice cream was delicious and the service was fast. You can get up to two flavors in a small, which was generously sized, in my opinion. They are not doing any cones right now (presumably because of COVID-19). Would visit again! read more

The staff was extremely friendly. I have a child that has a nut allergy. And when I asked for them to clean the scoop to prevent cross contamination. Not only did she walk to the sink wash her hands put on a fresh new pair of gloves she also opened a brand new container and used a brand new scooper. Not many places will do this. Being that it was my family's first time in Dewey, I have no idea when Vanderwendes opened - but considering I'm the first to review, it must have been during the summer of 2015. With a line out the door, we realized we were in the right place. I ordered "one" scoop of the Peanut Butter Fudge Chunk. The "one" scoop was HUGE. Huge, huge, huge portions all around. The ice cream itself was great - a little different than what I thought, but really delicious nonetheless. A creamy peanut butter base, with chunks of chocolate/fudge throughout. One main reason I'm giving this place 5 stars is to give special mention to the crew of girls behind the counter. They kept the line moving, had an organized system of ordering/scooping, and did not seem fazed at all by the growing crowd of hunger customers. Having scooped ice cream for a summer or two before, I was impressed by their calmness and ability to keep everyone happy and with ice cream in hand, as quickly as possible.
