Being that it was my family's first time in Dewey, I have no idea when Vanderwendes opened - but considering I'm the first to review, it must have been during the summer of 2015. With a line out the door, we realized we were in the right place. I ordered "one" scoop of the Peanut Butter Fudge Chunk. The "one" scoop was HUGE. Huge, huge, huge portions all around. The ice cream itself was great - a little different than what I thought, but really delicious nonetheless. A creamy peanut butter base, with chunks of chocolate/fudge throughout. One main reason I'm giving this place 5 stars is to give special mention to the crew of girls behind the counter. They kept the line moving, had an organized system of ordering/scooping, and did not seem fazed at all by the growing crowd of hunger customers. Having scooped ice cream for a summer or two before, I was impressed by their calmness and ability to keep everyone happy and with ice cream in hand, as quickly as possible. Family and I picked out this ice cream place purely because it was packed! Definitely seemed the place to go over all the other ice cream shops in town. And it did not disappoint! The biggest bonus is the size of the scoops! Portions are definitely worth every penny. The usual one scoop is about double or more than anywhere I've ever been. The line moved slightly slow, but you could tell the staff was working hard and keeping a good organized pace. Overall, a great little shop. The minimal decor was cute and homey and felt like exactly what you'd hope an ice cream shop should be at the beach. I rate four stars because more seating for all the guests would be more accommodating, but the shop is on the smaller side. There's no such thing as a beach day without ice cream, so when I was in Dewey for the day I stopped here. I was drawn in by the idea of farm fresh ice cream. I ordered two scoops and to my surprise two is actually more like 6 here. I couldn't finish it but it was a great deal, so much for so cheap! But the ice cream itself wasn't all that great. The mint chocolate chip is a unappealing, incredibly artificial color. The cookies and cream wasn't very sweet. There aren't many ice cream places in Dewey so next time I'd probably drive to Rehoboth or Bethany for my ice cream fix. read more

I wouldn't call myself a huge ice cream fan, but Vanderwende's ice cream is so spectacular, it's made me a believer. Delicious, lots of fun flavors, good and friendly service, plus having driven past the farm, it's clear the cows are out in the grass and fresh air, which makes the ice cream even better! We have always loved the Salty Caramel, which has little bits of pretzel in it, but every flavor we've tried, from Vanilla to Cotton Candy, has been awesome! So glad we made it just before the early evening rush. You really can't beat farm fresh ice cream. They also make their waffle cones on the spot. I opted for half berry cheesecake and half pineapple. This place does not skimp on their scoop serving, they are quite too their single scoop looks more like a double and then some. You know it's good ice cream when you walk in and their workers are indulging themselves in the product they sell. I would skip the franchise competitors and head on right here. read more

Giving three stars only because the kid working behind the counter was awesome--he dealt with a huge rush and had a smile on and was cracking jokes to all of us the whole time. This shop was pretty disappointing which I'm surprised given all the previous positive reviews. Younger staff here seemed impatient while we were ordering. A bit pricy but scoops are huge, 1 Scoop seems more like 3 and plenty for me. I had the salty caramel, ice cream was just ok the pretzels in the ice cream were soft snd chewy.
