The cuisine they are serving is from Tianjin, China, with a focus on freshly made pancakes with choice of additional proteins and veggies. This concept is unique to me, and only one I have ever since in NYC.
Let me start with the good. The large pancakes are made fresh, which takes about 7-8 minutes. It is somewhat dense and quite filling, with a good amount of chew. For $3, it's obviously considered a cheap eats. Unfortunately, without sauce or toppings, it's really not all that flavorful on its own.
Therefore, I added some stuff. Since I never had it before and the confusing menus didn't help. I took the suggestion of the daughter to simply make a combination for me that's enjoyable. When I received my pancake, it came with sauce slaughtered on, two pieces of fried chicken fillets, a hot dog, two imitation crab sticks, some fried enoki mushrooms, and lettuce. All the toppings were cooked well, though I really didn't need that many items, especially the hot dog. Wrapping it all together made it about the size of a large open ended gyro.
As for the overall taste, it was decent, but not mind blowing in any way. I definitely could have used more sauce. Regardless, it was still somewhat enjoyable, until they told me that it was $17. I was looking for cheap eats and everything else in that hallway is definitely much less. I felt a little bit snookered, especially because I trusted them wholeheartedly. With that said, I will not hold that too much against them because they saw a cash cow willing to spend to taste their "best" and they are just trying to make a buck. If the flatbread sandwich was outstanding, then I probably wouldn't have minded at all.
Before I left, I also bought two zhongzi from them for $3 each. One is filled with red bean and the other dates. Pretty small in size, but hopefully quality is good. If not, I don't see myself coming back here often for the pancake, or at least not with so many fillers that add up in price quickly.
