Bao buns
Derrick N.

Had mao bao buns, specifically beef, chicken, and pork at smorgasburg in Brooklyn, NY. Was very disappointed in the buns. It was moist, unusually very chewy, and did not taste particularly good.

I tried some of their food that they were selling at a street fair. They had 5 types of dumplings available on that particular day to choose from for a generous price of 6 for $12. I had a pork, chicken, and beef dumpling. The other 2 that could have been chosen were lamb and impossible meat. They were fried appropriately with plenty of filling present in each one. The pork dumpling was definitely my favorite as the flavor really came through nicely. The beef and chicken ones tasted somewhat similar to me, but both were still appetizing. Will I go back? Sure.

Cold. Not bad. Had these little pieces at Smorgasburg at World Trade Center outside of the Oculus. They're $10 for 4 pieces. You can mix and match. Mine were cold and even though they tasted good, they weren't worth the price in my opinion. I suggest trying them for yourself though as writing your own review. I may try them again in the future but they're a decent number of other bao places at smorgasburg so I may seek elsewhere.

So mid at the Miami smorgasbord. Overpriced and wasn't even warm. It was pretty, but would not recommend.

Not sure why this place would get anything below 5 stars?! Their bao is so delicious and well made. It's fresh, tasty, and authentic. The staff is friendly and the price point seems average. Highly recommend!

Mao's Bao is the best dumpling purveyor in all of NYC. They serve up super crispy Sheng Jian Bao daily on the High Line. Formerly, you could only get these tasty bao at Smorgasburg. This location is mega convenient being above the Chelsea Market! What makes this bao so special is the clear love, care, and attention to detail. The customer service is tops here. I've always enjoyed a crispy crunchy bao with a smile from the person on the other end. At this location the bao is cooked in induction pans. The great news is they still hold the wonderful qualities that they are known for. These bao have a history in Shanghai. They normally use this huge cast iron pan. They are steamed and you get to watch the steam rise from under the lids. By the time your bao is finished, the bottoms are so crunchy, the tops are so pillowy, the insides are so juicy. The flavors include pork, chicken, lamb or even the impossible burger (meatless) called the impossibao. They have wonderful prunella, and hibiscus teas too. Today I had the lamb and pork. They were so perfect!! Don't forget to douse your bao in rice vinegar (or spicy sauce if you like)!

This little food stand is near the end of the High Line, and right next to Chelsea market. I was super hungry while walking, and decided to try a few of these as a snack. I was shocked at how small the bao were and how expensive they were for their size. The pork one was juicy and delicious, but the bao wrapper on the lamb one was stiff and hard. The lamb filling was also a little dry and tough.

The large bao they offer looked to be something worth reckoning, but for the sake of variety we purchased three different flavors of the smaller bao. They were satisfactory but didn't particularly stick out from any other establishment I've purchased them at. We tried the chicken, pork, and vegetarian options. If you check this place out make sure to try the large one!!

Was actually at their stand at Atlantic Antic in Brooklyn this year. They had a pretty long line, and I could see why - they just had every type of dumpling you could want. Well, in theory. They were out of their Impossible dumplings by the time I got there, but I still got to try one of everything else. The lamb was my favorite, but the beef, chicken, and pork were all delicious as well. Quick service, and a great way to sample a bunch of stuff while being travel-friendly!

The pacing of the meal for the quantity of food received seemed very rushed, and we didn't really have a chance to relax and enjoy any of the courses. However, the quality of the experience was a complete disaster particularly for the price. Clearly, the packed restaurant would disagree, but for the four of us anyway, we would not return. It started with the check in process at what felt like a long hotel front desk with multiple, self important hosts and hostesses overseeing your entrance to the cavernous bar/waiting area. One problem is the noise is so deafening that you can't really hear what they say to you but we check in a few minutes early and waited obediently in the bar area chatting. After about 30 minutes (15 after our reservation time), and watching numerous parties large and small who arrived after us be seated by the hostesses wandering through the dimly lit space who peer quizzically and ask your name, my husband went to ask for an update. (We joked that those vibrating lighted buzzers alerting when your table was ready would have been super helpful, but it was amusing to watch while we waited). It was clear they somehow lost track of us as she had him repeatedly spell our (not unusual) name. Anyway, after that, within 10 minutes after that we were taken downstairs to our seats (but not before standing awkwardly in the large dining area near packed tables waiting while our table was cleaned). Server with a heavy accent was kind and mostly helpful so none of this is on him. The busser who managed to spill half a pitcher of cold water on my husband's back, soaking his shirt and jacket and barely apologizing, is a whole other story. We managed to get a glass of his mediocre Cabernet comped for the experience. If I sound annoyed, I guess I still am. I had high hopes for a fun and tasty experience in a cool part of the city and it just wasn't.

Service however, was just adequate. But it's what you would expect from a delicious Chinese restaurant. The waitstaff will get you what you want when you ask it, but clearly doesn't want to be there. Also the place is cash only. But there's a reason they're always busy on the weekends, this place is good.

The hostess and our various waiters (they all seem to assist all diners) were all very friendly and welcoming. We love to try new things so we had to check out the Little Alley Pig Ear appetizer, and I also wanted to try the Shanghai Crispy Eel. For entrees the husband ordered the Eight Delicacies in Chili Sauce and I got the Soft Shell Crab with Rice Cake. Pro tip- their appetizers and entrees are hefty, with two apps and two entrees we were stuffed at the end. The food! The pigs ears were our favorite thing we tried- they well seasoned and so unique I've never had anything quite like it. We didn't read the menu carefully and were surprised it was a cold dish- I imagined the crispy was from being fried but it's just the texture of the cartilage! It's probably not for everyone but I really enjoyed the new experience and the flavor and spice were great. The crispy eels were also tasty, though with such a large portion split between just two people I found the sweetness of the sauce a bit much. I started dipping them in the chili oil from the ears and enjoyed that, but I'd still only get the eel again with more than 2 people to split it. For entrees the 8 delicacies was tasty, all the meat was nicely cooked and tender, and the sauce was pleasant. I wasn't super wowed by this dish compared to some of the more interesting things we tried but it was a solid well-cooked entree. The fried soft shell crab over the rice cakes was delicious and again a very unique experience. I found the sauce a tad sweet but I think I was still a little over the eel dish so I may have been extra sensitive. That being said, it was fun and delicious and I'd eat it again! I can't remember the cocktails we bought, I know they were good but the food definitely distracted us! Little Alley was great overall and I'd love to go back to try some dumplings; sadly we were just too full at the end of the meal!
