We grabbed seats at the bar, where Freddy--bartender, hero, and possible Jedi--was holding it down solo. At first, we were the only ones there, living our best VIP lives. But 20 minutes in, a wild birthday party appeared! Chaos? Maybe. Freddy? Cool as a cucumber in a walk-in fridge. Despite the madness, he still made time for us like we were the stars of the show. We ordered the Swiss burger and the Fire burger. Let me tell you: that homemade hot sauce doesn't mess around. It's the kind of spicy that humbles you--one bite in, and I was ordering another beer, not for the buzz, but for survival. Painfully delicious. The vibe? Totally vibing. The food? Fire (literally). Freddy? A legend. We'll definitely be back, hopefully with less hot sauce-induced tears and more high-fives.

You could get that at any single restaurant. Ambiance was worn down, with cheap, old, rickety tubular furniture... and it was loud. There was some karaoke going on. We couldn't converse. Not my scene. Service was slow. So, neither the view, nor the ambiance, nor the generic and boring food provide reasons to go back.

The menu includes oysters, elk burgers, nachos, wings, calamari, cheese curds, tacos, and more. On weekends, they serve brunch from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The patio area is nice and features bar stools that wrap around the entire building (there are no tables, just a bar-style railing). It can get a little warm outside since there's limited shade, but the view is to die for. For my gluten-free friends, the Brass Kraken offers gluten-free buns, corn tortillas for tacos, and one fully gluten-free beer option. A great place to visit it you are in the Poulsbo area.

The problem unfortunately was that my food wasn't good. My cheeseburger tasted entirely unseasoned, like it would if you made burger patties with solely ground beef and a little bit of binder, but added nothing else. Very meatloafy. The fries were pretty good, but getting a burger that isn't kinda kills the meal.

We came right at opening on a Thursday, and had our choice of seating. As I understand, the bar is owned by a couple of brothers, and both were there to assist us. We started with cocktails (why not?). The margarita was a good choice and we learned that they were taught mixology by their stepdad who worked in the industry in Ballard. We also learned the pie recipes were taught to them from their mom. We opted for the Thanksgiving pie, which was served with a side of cranberry sauce and a lovely green salad. The pie was a good size, filled with turkey, rosemary potatoes, gravy and stuffing. I mean, classic flavors, and topped with a dab of cranberry, it brings out all the feels. Very tasty! The crust is perfectly flakey and delicious. The salad was topped with feta and grated beets with a tangy viniagrette. Hubs and I shared, and it was pretty filling. I didn't think we could eat a sweet slice there, so I ordered the Humble Crumble to go. Of course.......we couldn't resist. Just one bite, then another. We soon devoured the sweet pie before we could even get up from the table. I love the idea! Great food! Great Service!

After a couple of trips to check out our wedding venue in Index, we noticed the Sand Bar every…read moresingle time and told ourselves we'd absolutely be checking it out. During our last trip in the area, we decided to go on in for a drink. Dive bar fans, this spot is absolute GOLD. If you're in the area for a hike? Stop in for a post hike beer. In the area just passing through? Literally pull over for a drink or two and a respite from the car. Whatever you're doing in Index, there is no reason not to stop at the Sand Bar. The Sand Bar is nautical themed and so much fun. Themed to the NINES. As an event planner, their dedication does not go unnoticed. There's also so many fun fish tanks around! Kinda makes you feel like a kid again to just watch them swim around while you're relaxing. Would I suggest saving an appetite for this spot? Honestly, no. They have a DIY chili dog bar and rotating specials but all of the food is ready to go in crockpots. That said, if it was midnight and I had a few cold ones, I might just be inclined to make myself a DIY chili dog. I'm just being honest here. I did see in the parking lot that the local pizza spot will deliver here, so that might be a more sanitary option, but what's the fun (and gamble) in that? There's a fun outdoor area with eclectic seating and beautiful mountain views if you're there during the day. No liquor here, but they've got solid beer, wine, cider/seltzer options. The co-owner was working when we came in and he's a super nice guy. We complimented the bar and he insisted we give his wife all the credit as it was her idea and she was "nice enough to let him work there." We informed him we'd be back in the area for our June wedding and were planning on stopping in after we got married and he gave us a business card with their personal cell number to TEXT and let them know how many people from our wedding were gonna come in so they could prep karaoke and stay open a little later. I mean, how sweet is that!?!? Highly suggest supporting this small business whenever passing through Index - we can't wait to come back after our wedding. We're seriously rolling with our wedding party + then some.

After a first attempt where a restaurant's hours were not updated, we found Stymie's in Sequim. It's one of the restaurants at Cedars at Dungeness golf course (the other one is Double Eagle Steak and Seafood). It seems to be the more casual of the two options and we opted for it since we were in hiking clothes. The hostess told us we could walk in and try to find a table. She warned us it might be a long wait. Thankfully, we found a place to sit right away and a waiter gave us waters and a menu. We ordered cups of clam chowder to start. Thankfully they were out quickly. We got drinks while we waited for our food. The Dungeness crab Mac and cheese was listed as an appetizer, so we assumed it was a small portion. My husband got the fish and chips and I got pasta with shrimp. We got our entrees first, so we thought maybe the waitress had forgotten we ordered the Mac and cheese since they were so busy. She then apologized for the wait and said she'd be bringing it out shortly. We weren't planning on asking about it because their portions are very generous and even though we were hungry, we realized it was so much food. When the Dungeness crab Mac and cheese finally came out, it wasn't in a small cup, it was a whole bowl of delicious goodness. The Mac and cheese was resting in some sort of sauce and they were extremely generous with the crab. I loved that you could control the ratio with each bite. I wish I had taken pictures of the menu and its description, but all you need to know is that it's the BEST Mac and cheese I've ever had. I was floored that it wasn't mentioned in any review nor pictures. Maybe it's a new addition. Don't walk, RUN if you're nearby. You won't regret it and it will be worth the wait. I forgot all about my entree and just focused on the Mac.
