This is a bit fancier than the bar across the street and the drinks are still a very good deal at $6 (vodka soda) vs $5 at Joshua Tree. The reason I am giving them 3 vs 4 stars is because of inconsistency. There is one older bartender who is very well dressed and pays attention to your drink. The treatment you get is FARRR beyond the $6 cost of the drink which makes me happy to give a 50% tip. Unfortunately the second time I came, some woman was behind the bar and gave zero thought to my drink...pouring it as fast as she possibly could. It was watered down and poorly crafted. If you're coming for just beer or a drink, this place will do well enough. But if you're coming for the food, which wants to be considered in a class right below pre fixe levels, you should probably stay away. Service is slow, even when they have few people in the bar. But they don't really care about you. "How's the meal?" I'm asked. "It's okay," I answer with disappointment. She walks away with ambivalence and I wonder what the point of that exchange was. They have a solid beer selection, and the crowd is the same you'd find in most Davis Square establishments, but there's the prevalent feeling that the foundry is trying to impress, only to have learned from their 13 year old cousin. Nothing I've tried is delicious, simply mediocre at best. Even their specials lack inspiration. A "panini bite" is a panini cut into strips. Serves as an appetizer, when t should be a lunch? I don't even know what I'm supposed to be consuming or experiencing any more. This isn't to say that the place is awful. Simply that it has a lot to do if it wants to be what it's apparently striving for. You can't just give food a unique name and slap a deal on it to impress a foodie. I've been there three times now: hitting the breakfast, brunch and dinner menus once each. Dinner: my friend and I split a meaty dish and a vegetarian one. They were very accommodating about splitting the entrees onto separate bowls/plates for us, which was nice of them (it wasn't convenient; one of them was essentially stew). They also were running a special of hard cider, which I always appreciate. Based on other yelp reviews, we tried the poutine, and I'm now trying to forget how good it was so that I stay away in future; health food it is not. Breakfast: I had the grand marnier french toast, which was delicious. The fruit on top included kumquats, for a unique and tangy little touch. Next time I'm in the mood to carb out I'll definitely head back here for this. Brunch: we had beer-and-bacon mussels, which were definitely good (if messy), and then I had the croque madame -- that's the croque monsier plus a fried egg on top. UGH. It was good, but, despite removing the lower half of bread, I managed to seriously overeat without realizing I was doing so. I felt sick for a while, and won't be ordering croque anything again. This place is hoppin. I made reservations for 8 pm and am glad I did. The staff was pleasant even though they were extremely busy, the manager even turned the TV on to the Celtics game for us when we asked. The service was a bit slow, but our waitress was really patient with us as members of our party arrived in spurts due to them trying to park in the area. The food and drinks were surprisingly well priced, I expected something more expensive from what I had read. The bar area is really nicely decorated, and the ambiance of the place is really lively. Their menu is a strange mix though: mussels, poutine, hush puppies, bratwurst, etouffee, Croque Monsieur, burgers, flatbreads, and a variety of pastas? I'm not sure if it's French, Southern, Italian, or American. That being said, all the food we had was solid. Julia F and I have a weekend ritual of searching out good coffee and interesting food, usually on a Sunday morning. This past weekend we decided to try Foundry and were really disappointed. A few months ago I came to eh Foundry for drinks on a first date and enjoyed my experience. The waitress didn't rush us out and my cocktail was delicious. My brunch experience was not so great. Julia and I arrived some time around 11 am and the hostess seemed to have a little confusion trying to figure out which parties were together and which weren't. After she tried to seat us with two other groups, she finally put us at a high top right next to the bar. Our server started out good enough, bringing us menus and coffee. We had to beg for extra sugar a couple times, he couldn't seem to bring more than 3 packets at a time. Jules ordered the steak and eggs, I went for the eggs benedict and we shared the poutine. The poutine was amazing. Everything was pretty much perfect, especially the amazing flavorful and bacony gravy. Both our ain dishes came with potatoes that were covered (and I mean covered) with paprika. They were bright red and tasted like eating paprika out of the bottle. My eggs were a little runnier than I like, but the benedict on the whole was passable, nothing special. Julia's eggs were right, but her medium well steak came out as medium instead. The steak was flavorful, but she only enjoyed about half of it. After we finished, we tried to enjoy our coffee, but it was hard with the smell of all that paprika. When our server came to the table Jules asked the server to remove the plates for the smell. I said "There was A LOT of paprika on those potatoes." The server said "Well I don't season them." Really? Being the new joint in town, I gave Foundry the litmus test for any bar and grill. Burger and a beer. The burger was decent. I think from the general ambiance of the place I had the expectation that it would be more restaurant cuisine rather than bar food. My burger however fell somewhere in between. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't spectacular either. I had heard the waitress talk up the beef quality and ingredients to another customer for a few minutes prior to ordering, but taste is taste. Without the lengthy into, I can only trust what I like. The beer thankfully offset that with an impressive selection of beers on tap. Any bar with over twenty quality beers on tap gets a star in my book. I was happy with having a Smuttynose Pumpkin with my meal. Not as happy that it was $6.50 though. I understand that good beer is rarely cheap, but still. It's a fitting addition to Davis square and definitely going to be the new hot spot in town until their buzz kind of dies down. After that point though, I have a feeling that Foundry's lack of a particular niche may cause it to just fall into the category of "another Davis bar". read more

Been here 3 times and each time has been just ok. I like the menu -- seems to be heavily influenced by Eastern Standard and the Russell House Kitchen. (In fact, one friend of mine assumed it was owned by the ES folks and still doesn't really believe me that there is no connection between the two establishments). The food is hit-or-miss. The gnocchi I had last night, served in a gorgeous hollowed-out roasted butternut squash, was a little dried out, but the squash and the brussels sprouts in the dish rocked my world. Great fall flavors. Everything was well-seasoned and the presentation was original and cool. My boyfriend tried the bahn mi and didn't love it -- I had a bite and thought the chicken liver mousse spread kind of dominated the other flavors. It's an interesting/ambitious idea to use liver mousse as a sandwich spread and it didn't quite work (even though I like liver mousse). Bahn mi should be about the pickled veg and the Korean BBQ meat-- the richness of the mousse was too much. The mussels I had on a previous visit were good, though not stand-out/ memorable in any way. Very very good french fries. And a friend's steak, ordered medium-well, had to be sent back to the kitchen twice for more time on the grill. But this happened right after they opened so maybe the grill man is now more accurate with his meat temps. And they were very polite and took the steak off the bill. So I'd give Foundry like a B/B+ rating. Not bad but could be better with a few tweaks. read more

So happy to see new cool restaurants in Davis! Love the decor in here and I had high hopes for this place. When this place first opened there were some hiccups - like I came with a friend for dinner and waited about an hour for the first round of drinks (just draft beers) and then another 30 min or so for our food. Our waitress, however, was SO awesome and kept coming over to apologize and say it was really backed up and they were still trying to work out the kinks. So I can appreciate that. Second time here great service and the food was better than the first time. Our waitress was really on top of it - no one was ever waiting long for drinks or their food. Third time ate at the bar so it was great - food came out quickly and the bartender recommended great drinks. Fourth time - witnessed manager flipping out on staff, food lukewarm when it came out, beers frequently slow - or not brought at all, bill screwed up and the food was only so so. I want to see more changes in the menu - not the same 5 things all the time and they need to get more consistent with the speed of delivering the food when it's hot / bring drinks more quickly. I hope they can iron this out because it would be a shame to loose a restaurant with so much potential. read more

PHEW! Overpriced even for Davis Square, and that's saying something! I went in for dinner tonight at 7 and took a seat at the bar. The place was mostly empty, but I prefer sitting and watching the warm glow of the back bar lighting through the liquor bottles. It's like firelight, expect safe for indoor use and more common in Boston. First major complaint: Have fewer stools at the bar. I could barely wedge in there, and I'm a tiny girl, and getting back out again was a pain in the butt. Once we got to the bar, my boyfriend and I, the bartender was very polite and knowledgeable, with plenty of recommendations for which beers we should sample. I wound up with a Dark and Stormy, and my boyfriend had a Dirty B@stard, both of which were spot on to our particular palates. From there, we got the shrimp sampler, which was nice, but the seaweed garnish was a bit disturbing. It felt like something out a horror film, with weird green bulbs set over chunks of ice, and though the four shrimp were quite well-portioned, the two I got were not completely veined. For $11, I expect a bit better. Dinner was much better, though. I had the chef's burger, SPOT ON to medium rare, and at $15, it was delicious, if not incredibly small. Feeling a trend here? TINY portions, TONS of money. Yup. My boyfriend had the barbecue chicken sandwich, similarly delicious, but with literally twice as much meat as bun. His fries were amazing, though, and at $10, I can see why it's the most popular item on the menu - tasty but literally the cheapest thing they have. I got a side of brussel sprouts, and lemme tell you, they were hands-down the best thing I had tonight. A little buttery, a little garlic-y, and roasted over the grill. For $5, I would go back and have that with one of their salads for lunch any day. read more

I just went here tonight. after being mildly excited about what seemed to be a promising menu, I left pretty disappointed. it was a very mediocre experience. we started with the poutine, as it's not something you see on many menus and the waitress recommended it. it was a pretty meagre portion of fries for $9. they were undercooked and drenched in a thin, soupy gravy which only made them more soggy. I suspect the gravy is bought in and is really over-peppered, perhaps to try to hide that. there were a few large, hard lumps of cheese on top. I had the shrimp etouffe for my main course. it was disappointing. the $18 plate was at least half rice. there were literally 5 shrimp (overcooked and shriveled-- I've had better from the frozen section of trader joe's), 6 tiny pieces of okra, and 3 so dry I could hardly swallow a bite hush puppies. the dish was rather bland. to heavy on cayenne, I believe, which gave it some heat with little rounded out flavor. I really should have sent it back, but after tasting my bf's bland, overly-bacony (yes it's possible) coq au vin, I didn't think any other choice would have been better. the service was okay. their staff seemed to try to be friendly, but need a little guidance for the atmosphere I think they're trying to create. also, please tell the waiters to stop their annoying habit of cutting through the dining area unnecessarily. there are wide paths they should be using for most of their hustling and otherwise end up bumping into customers. the decor was okay. I think I would have liked it if it was supported by good food. it's kind of similar to eastern standard, but more of a wannabe, chain restaurant version. unfortunately, the music was a bit too loud in my opinion. the kitchen is also too bustling to be so exposed. overall, the bf said it reminded him of uno's (ouch), but I got more of an elephant bar vibe. not great, not terrible, but not the quality I was hoping for. their best feature? a nice beer selection. read more

My experience was subpar and I would not return. I started with a "gambler" a very pleasant mixed drink, but that was the end of the good experience. The food took extraordinarily long (25+ min) and my food came with cheese (which I requested to have removed). My mother and sister finished their food before my food was finished cooking. They ended up giving it to me free (as well as my drink) and packing it to go. The burger my mom has was "good" and the salad with chicken was "just a salad". I'm not sure if my waiters fault, she was very pleasant and seemed to do her best to compensate for the kitchens folly. So I walk in with my friend and immediately get seated at the far back of the (mostly empty) restaurant directly next to the commercial dishmachine. Instead of listening to that through the entire meal we get up and walk to the bar. No problem. I order a bacon bleu burger medium and a beer, my friend also orders. Great. My burger comes back with swiss and onions. So I speak up and let them know they have sent me the wrong burger. The bartendress assures me the onions are the 'bacon jam' and I must just think that is what they are.. jedi mind trick attempt #1. So after considering this possibility using my senses of sight, olfactory and now taste, declare that I am pretty sure the cheese on my burger is not bleu. Enter: the manager (or so I assume). 'ok, let me get you the right burger'. To which I tell him not to worry about considering I have handled and started eating the burger... 'no I will get you the right one!'. It seemed a bit overly insistent. A statement rather than a question. After eating practically the entire swiss and onion burger they come out with another and exchange plates. This burger was raw in the middle, definitely not medium. What a bummer, now I am half way through my second burger and it sucked worse than the first. After stopping due to repulsivity (of situation and food), the bartender and manager tell me 'what a great job Ive done" on my second burger... jedi mind trick attempt #2 The 2 stars go to the bartender and manager for not really considering what I wanted as a customer. And for all the jedi mind trickery. Instead of asking me how I would like the situation to be handled they force fed me grass fed burger... it was service at it's worst. And if insisting a replacement be offered to wrong orders instead of comp is the policy, I strongly urger you to reconsider that. And start considering your customers. read more

Food was decent, service was poor. Although this isn't the waiter's fault, per se, it started off on a sour note when, after ordering two different beers, I was finally told their whole CO2 system was busted and all they had were nitro brews-- Guinness and Boddington's. Again, these things happen I suppose, but it set the tone somewhat for the rest of the meal. We ordered our salads before deciding on mains, and then when my girlfriend decided on the burger and saw that it came with either a salad or fries, she decided to get the salad with the burger. We called over the waiter and asked to cancel her salad, but he said they were about to come up, as if there was nothing he could do. Maybe I'm crazy, but if you decide you don't want something before it's even come to your table, they shouldn't force you to eat it and pay for it-- especially if it's something as simple as a salad. After this incident, the waiter seemed to sense we were unhappy, but rather than this making him extra attentive and accommodating, he seemed to try to avoid us. He came to see how the food was when I had about two bites left of my burger, even after he made two separate trips to the table right next to us to get their drink orders and deliver the drinks. As for the food-- the mixed greens salad was remarkably uninspired. A pile of lettuce, some of which was still a bit frozen, with average dressing. The only thing to spice it up was a handful of cherry tomatoes around the edge and a few fennel shavings on top. I had the special burger, their entry in the Boston Burger Competition. This was excellent-- high quality beef, with barbecue sauce, blue cheese, bacon, and onions. Very tasty. The fries were good, although maybe a tiny bit overdone for my taste (and I generally like my fries pretty crispy). My girlfriend got their regular burger with cheese and onions-- also good, but, like the salad, a little uninspired. For the type of place Foundry seems to be positioning themselves as, it just wasn't very exciting. All in all, decent food, but dismal service. Not sure if the busted CO2 system was something that could be helped, but given the fact that they bill themselves as serving "fine food" and "proper ale," they (or at least, our waiter) seemed remarkably unperturbed by the fact that basically their entire (extensive) beer menu was unavailable. I really wanted to like Foundry on Elm-- I was excited when I found out about this spacious gastro-pub with a great beer menu in Davis Square. But I just can't get over the sense that Foundry just doesn't quite know what it wants to be yet. Upscale hotel-restaurant-style dining for Somerville's over-30 set? An oasis for foodie hipsters? College bar hangout? Their menu is on the expensive side and has some tasty items (this past winter there was a pork crépinette appetizer with fried duck egg and salad, which was very good). But they're not particularly inspired or subtle-- more like heavy and pricey comfort food than anything else. The presentation can be a little awkward, too. The last time I got their chef's burger, it came with a piece of paper stuck on top with a toothpick on which there was a QR code. The waiter explained it would link me to a voting page for a burger competition the restaurant was entered in. The burgers are good and I'd probably vote for them in a competition, but I'd rather not pay $15 for a burger on which a piece of printer paper was unceremoniously impaled... just sayin'. I'd start feeling a little better if Foundry started targeting folks like myself who want to enjoy nice food & beer without having too fussy an experience. Perhaps adding a dollar oyster special, a tasting menu, and a small plates menu might make me feel a little more warmly. read more

Holy Mother of Pearl. What an excellent dining experience. We came in on St. Patrick's day after hitting a very crowded pub just looking for some wings, and we found our new favorite spot. The hostess was so sweet, sat us in the back with a really great, helpful and attentive waiter whose name I swear I would remember if the drinks weren't so darn good. We ordered the wings - they were absolutely phenomenal - followed by a pork belly pizzetta and truffle fries which just sent us into a fine feeding frenzy. We were seated right by the kitchen on an apparently stressful night where their computers went down, but all the kitchen staff was really professional and totally on their A-game, delivering seriously amazing flavorful food. I really couldn't give any higher recommendation to any dining establishment I've ever been to - I haven't stopped thinking about my next visit since I walked out the door. read more

Food was good. Better than average gastro pub fare. The scallop special was excellent and our group enjoyed the food. We had the bacon wrapped dates for an appetizer and they were a huge hit. Smoky, sweet, crisp exterior and moist and chewy feta cheese interior. only items that weren't 100% bullseyes - The burger was undercooked. Rare rather than medium well as ordered. Drink service was a little slow and this was pre-dinner rush on a Saturday when dining room was mostly empty and there were only a few people near the bar. It is rare for me to be stumped for choices but none of the dinner entrees appealed to me or were underwhelming. Nine dollars for a simple salad and then charging fourteen dollars to add steak seemed a bit outrageous. Stopped in before a movie on a Wednesday night for a quick bite to eat, around 7:30 and able to get a table for two. Server was nice and quick. Started w some warm bread and butter - okay, not super flavorful and a bit too crispy I got a chicken sandwich w side salad -Chicken sandwich: came w tomato, bbq sauce, bacon, and smallish (like a big slider) round bun. Sandwich was good, good mix of flavors, chicken was nicely cooked and good quality -side salad was nothing special -My friend got a broccoli appetizer, full of cheese and w sausage. Decent place to get a drink. I wouldn't say it's anything special, but it gets the job done if you're looking to grab a table with a friend and have a beer. Sitting by the open window is nice. Good beer selection, but next time I plan on getting a cocktail, because that selection looked more exciting. Service was great! Friday is the best time to come here. They have an in-house DJ who is awesome, who plays 11pm-close. Drinks are very good. Bartenders are on point. I love the On Fleek, and most all of the whiskey drinks really. I like this place because you can dance, you can talk, you can drink you can eat. Theres plenty of room for lots of activities, and the music isnt so loud that you cant talk to anyone (I hate when that happens) Definitely a good one to stop into, bring your dancin shoes on Friday! read more

I just wanted to report for any vegans out there (many in Davis Square) that you *can* eat something here! I went last night and our server was very nice and accommodating - we got the Meze appetizer (hummus, tabbouleh, carrot salad, olives & pita chips) and the arugula & beet salad (sans cheese). For a light dinner with drinks, it was a delicious option for us non-poutine-eaters (though those looked pretty great too!). FYI I was told the acorn squash entree couldn't be made without butter, if you're wondering; too bad, it really sounds delicious. Overall: a fun place for (a loud) dinner, and with cocktails at $9.25 and wine starting at $6, not badly priced for drinks. The only reason I will not be here often for food is the $12 app and $8 salad - just a little too expensive for what I got, in my opinion. This place is newish so this review may get updated. This joint was opened by Ken Kelly the dude who owns The Independent and Precinct, and it has the same sorta relaxed classiness that those places have. There are some good things and some bad things here. The good: Great beer/booze selection. Hot chicks work here and hang out here. Unique styling... Davis Square needed an upscale bar that wasn't too full of itself. The bad: Food is incredibly mediocre and overpriced. 5 of us went there for dinner and despite having a reservation, we still had to wait 40 minutes for a table. Everyone's meals were in the $20 range yet none of us were very impressed. The joint also suffers from an identity crisis... there are a plethora of tv's but they refuse to turn the sound on during Patriots games because it's not "classy" enough. Make up your mind please. If only this place were in a different location, I would gladly have given it 5 stars. For anyone that had ever been to davis sq. on a popular evening, you will completely get that finding a parking spot here can be akin to playing beirut with sippy cups (read: basically impossible). For those of you that are ok with this, I offer the following manual for guaranteeing yourself a parking spot. It goes as follows: 1. Pick a lot. There's one behind the building housing the CVS, and another across from Johnny D's. These are the only 2 worth looking at, as the smaller ones have far less turnover. 2. Stay on that lot. Do not move, no matter if under threat of old hags, banshees, or massholes. 3. Watch for people walking onto the lot holding things like keys, leftovers, children, etc.. 4. Stalk behind them as they amble towards their spot. Make your intentions known immediately. 5. Prepare a "war face" in case others attempt to vie for the same spot. 6. Take the spot and enjoy. Once you've found a spot, muscle your way around the place and order something yummy. Lots of people have mentioned the delicious fare, so I'll let you read those reviews. Welp they started carding at 8 p.m. on a Thursday which I thought was super early and unnecessary. I was going to dinner...it was just strange. Besides that, both food and service were great. My date was late (by like 6 minutes...just in case he reads this) so the hostess struck up a conversation with me and recommended a few items off the menu. I didn't catch her name but she was very friendly and funny. I took her suggestion and ordered the falafel....something I would have stayed away from at an American/pub style restaurant. I love the Foundry. It's one of the most consistent restaurants I've been to in Boston, and is my go-to when family is in town. What do I mean when I say "consistent"? 1. You can almost always get a table without waiting. 2. They have a range of dishes, so anyone can find something they like well enough. 3. The service is always quick and friendly. 4. I've never disliked a dish (that's not to say I love everything... in fact, I have only loved a couple dishes - more on that below). By far, my favorite dish is the tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwich. I'm thrilled to say that you can order it at any time of the day - brunch, lunch, or dinner. They infuse honey inside (and maybe on top of?!) the grilled cheese sandwich, so it is wonderfully sticky and sweet, which is an excellent match the to salty, creaminess of the tomato soup. I also once had an excellent turkey "pilgrim" burger, though it hasn't been on the menu over the past few times I've visited. Another thing I have enjoyed at the Foundry is their Wednesday (?) night specials - you can get a 2-course dinner and a beer for $20. Make sure you go early - they've run out of the food (or beer) a couple times I've tried to partake in this deal! Foundry on Elm - Beer. Without saying MA makes great brews - Bars Near Me - Somerville, Massachusetts

I'm upgrading them to five stars. For one, their beer game keeps getting better. The other is after craving french onion soup for over a month, Foundry was the place that finally gave me real legit French Onion soup. It comes in a proper crock, with toasted and bubbly cheese (perhaps a touch burnt on one side) with a proper sized and prepared crouton underneath. The soup itself is perfect, full of good flavor, yet not overly salty as too many places fall victim too. My craving has been satisfied. The roasted acorn squash and pecans dish was excellent, but the star of that dish were the brussel sprouts and cauliflower with the sauce. The squash was more of a much welcomed finisher. The Creme Brulee was great. It wasn't overly chilled as many restaurants serve, and had a great flavor. The only thing holding it back was that the crust was slightly too charred. I was slightly disappointed in the new rigatoni noodle used for their bolognese dish, I prefer a wide noodle. This place is amazing, my only reservation is if they work on less char: while caramelization is good, char is an off flavor. read more

Just had an outstanding meal there this evening. First time there and definitely not the last. 1. Perfect oysters. Island Creek from Duxbury. Big, plump, sweet. Yum. 2. Outstanding calamari. Lightly cooked, fried lemon. 3. Best Caesar salad!!! I love there take on it. A vinaigrette yet with all the flavors you want from a caesar salad without the heavy dressing. 4. Flatiron with herb butter and caramelized shallots. Tender, a perfect medium rare, so much flavor. Hand cut fries on the side. 5. Dessert was very good but not great. Upside down pineapple cake with caramel and coconut ice cream. The cake was dry but all the flavors were there. Really outstanding service from a server named Tuesdee. Ask for her section!! So glad to find this gem so close to home. I've heard it can get really crowded during the weekend. Go during the week! read more

My fiancée and I came here for a drink and some apps and were blown away. Fantastic selection for drinks (was very pleased as a craft beer lover), and our apps were incredible. The raw oysters were super fresh, juicy and plump, as were the mussels- tossed in a succulent tomato garlic sauce and served with a side of crispy garlic parmesan truffle fries (recommended by our waiter and truly incredible), and finally the kale Caesar salad- so fresh and so lemony with a nice crisp added by the toasted chickpeas. And what made the visit worth it was the incredible staff and service. We were greeted and seated immediately by our host. Our waiter was so friendly and was great about checking in with us.
