We were looking for a new place for something light and quick on the way to the Custer Institute in Southold and ended up here. Street parking was a little challenging, but not bad. Found a spot a block over. The place is nice and spacious, dining area had a fireplace, bar area had some high tops. Service was pretty quick, our waitress was very nice and attentive, our cocktails came out shortly after ordering. We ordered the Chicken and Lemongrass dumplings, they were very good. Perfectly steamed, they were plump and not oily with a nice dipping sauce. I had the Asian Tuna Wrap, on which I drizzled the dipping sauce I saved from the dumplings earlier. It was magnificent. My better half had the Fried Chicken Boom Boom sammich and it was beautifully fried. I had a bit of it, and it too was fantastic. Added this to the short list of restaurants that we'll frequent on the way to Custer. read more

came here on a Sunday night got seated immediately and had a great meal! We sat in the bar area at one of the high top tables as there was a Mets game going on that we wanted to watch, but the dining room section directly next to it was pretty busy as well. I came here with my family and we all got a bunch of different appetizers to share (shoutout the potato skins - sooo good!) and I got the bun-less burger with a side of sweet potato fries. Great service and wonderful food at reasonable prices. We were seated in the dining room section which had a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. There were four of us for dinner and we ordered both the dumplings and the beef tips as appetizers. Both were good but in my opinion the dumplings were the winner. Then as entrees we ordered the salmon which was excellently prepared as well as build your own burgers which were juicy, tasty and extremely filling. I'm not going to give this place a one star review. Been here before. Food was solid. Tried to go with no reservation on a Thursday night and was advised by the hostess to try the bar side. Took a seat at the bar ordered drinks. Told the bartender we'd like a table. She said ok. As we finished up our beers she told us bar tables are first come first serve and they don't monitor who was waiting, information that would have been helpful upon the request. If she told us that out of the gate I would did what the group who arrived after us did.... Stand next to a party still eating and ruin their dinner. My advice if you want to eat here make a reservation. And if they refer you to the bar side and you want a table stand next to a table and wait. The help was no help in this situation. Stopped there a few hours ago on our way home from visiting Horton Point Lighthouse. I read that it was a place locals go to so we thought it would be the perfect place for a late lunch. Our server Valerie was so friendly and upbeat and had a great smile that really made us feel welcome. The food was amazing. Loved my delicious Asian Tuna Wrap that was cooked perfectly along with hot non greasy sweet potato fries. My husband had the Spinach Cobb Salad and he loved it! In an area where there are so many restaurants that do not quite hit the mark in areas such as cost, quality, presentation, and service, I would consider Founder's Tavern a standout. Whether you are having seafood or other meat dishes, the food is always cooked perfectly, and the overall recipes are nicely balanced so that the main ingredient takes center stage. I recently had a couple of specials (Tuna with coconut rice and Lobster fettucine with asparagus and shitake mushrooms) that were absolutely outstanding and reasonably priced for the quality and portion size. The service was prompt and friendly and they have a comfortable bar area where you can have dinner and a drink if the main dining room is full. If you are looking for expertly prepared meals with the freshest ingredients, I would highly recommend giving Founder's Tavern a try. It's my new go-to spot when I am out on the east end of the north fork. read more

Casual dining in Southold. We had the special crispy shrimp fried dumplings as an appetizer. Very tasty. Hubby ordered a burger with cheddar cheese and he found the meat to be tender but lacking flavor. I ordered the tuna wrap and I must say that the dressing on the salad that was in the wrap was over the top way too salty! The tuna was cooked to my specifications, rare but overall I would say it missed the mark. I want to like this place as it is a reasonable driving distance from our home, we will try it again in the future but will have to order different things. read more

Came here for dinner after spending the afternoon at the local wineries. It was the 4th of July weekend so it was hard to find a place open after 8 PM. They were very friendly and accommodated us without a reservation. Place wasn't too busy but was decently filled. Started off with the Hula Colada. It consisted of Hula Hut Pineapple Vanilla Vodka, coconut water and pineapple juice. Oh my gosh, this drink was amazing! It immediately transported me to a tropical island, even though I've never been to one before. After soaking in the sun all day, I couldn't have asked for a better drink. For an appetizer,, we had the Chicken and Lemongrass dumplings. I can honestly say that these were the best dumplings that I've ever had! Wish I even had some now. The Lemongrass absolutely made them. They come steamed in a citrus ginger glaze and comes with a Thai dipping sauce. Really though, you don't need to dip the dumplings in anything! They're that good. As my main I had the Filet Flounder Sandwich for $15. Great price for a perfect entree. Crispy battered crust on the outside with flaky flounder on the inside. Served on a soft potato bun. The piece of fish was huge. Too big for the roll itself. I got it with a side of cole slaw that was perfectly dressed. Nothing worse than cole slaw swimming in mayo. It was a great, simple meal to end the day. The bill came to about $119 for three people with 3 entrées, 4 cocktails, soda and 2 appetizers. I think that's a great price for delicious food and attentive service. Would love to come back again. read more

This place is definitely worth going to, but make reservations. We waited over an hour after originally being told it would be 30 minutes. We decided to grab a drink in the bar and watch sports. It was packed and the food smelled and looked amazing. Once we were seated the atmosphere was loud but in a good way. We sat near the fireplace and I appreciated that since it was freezing out! We ordered: Pretzels - 3 out of 5 the condiment was good! Dumplings - 3 out of 5 the flavor was there the dough was like overcooked pasta French Onion Soup - 4 out of 5 the presentation was spot on and the flavor was good Tavern Burger - 5 out of 5 this is a great burger! She retorts, "Well, it's going to have to work; we have a party coming in." The food is fine, and everything else goes smoothly. When the bill comes, you pay and leave a cash tip. As you're about to get in your car, she runs outside and demands, "Was there something wrong with the service?" The service was absolutely phenomenal. Called 15 minutes ahead just to see what the wait was like but didn't ask about reservations. We make our way there and they're packed for a Sunday night. No need to get nervous though because the wonderful hostess saved us a table right by the fireplace even though we didn't ask for a reservation. I ordered the French onion soup ($6.50)and filet tips sandwich ($16). The soup doesn't look special but it's delicious. Some of the best I've had in the US, better than some in France. It's not gruyere on top, maybe Swiss but still flavorful and delicious. Nice portion for the price. The filet tips sandwich was incredible! Very flavorful. Sweet potato fries were decent. Great value with tender steak cooked to order. Service was great. Always attentive. Husband had the lemon chicken. It was good. Not great but good. Awkward choice to serve over penne as opposed to linguine or something. Light but lemony flavor. Good portion. Nothing to praise but not deserving of knocking off a star. Valerie was our server and as busy at it was her attitude is alway upbeat, friendly, and positive. Kevin was working with her and they make an awesome team, as they work well together and just make the whole experience just awesome. I had the Brussel Sprouts and the filet mignon tips... always delicious and my friend had the Napoleon appetizer and the chili.... It is always great stumbling across a nice spot thanks to fellow Yelpers. There was a monkey wrench thrown into our day in Greenport so we needed a new lunch spot. We wanted something low key and not crowded, we still had a busy day ahead. So Founders Tavern sounded perfect. They have a nice bar area with a few high tops if memory serves me right. They also have a dining area with plenty of seating. So we grabbed a table near the windows. Our waitress came over and asked if we wanted any drinks. I had a Long Ireland IPA and my wife ordered the Southampton Pumpkin Ale. They had a nice touch with the cinnamon sugar along the rim of her glass. We ordered a chicken salad (great lunch option), homemade chips with buffalo sauce and bleu and chicken dumplings. All three we really liked. Nice and fresh. The chicken dumplings even had a hint of lemongrass. It really is a great lunch option and I'm sure they do a great dinner too. Or maybe you just want to have a few beers at the bar, watch the game and bet on some ponies (yup, they have that option!). read more
