Why have I been walking past Alpina everytime I'm in Greenport? Was it the dark atmosphere? Did I think I was getting just another American-German influenced restaurant with only brats and potato pancakes? Did I expect polka? [[HIGHLIGHT]]The experience was actually slow and refined, without the white tablecloths.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Alpina has German, Swiss, and slightly Northern Italian influenced cuisine, along with a selection of alcohols I was completely unfamiliar with... which made the experience feel full of new things. The most memorable food was actually one of the simplest. The chef prepared incredibly creamy, caramelized onions with a slight sauerkraut tang that was amazeballs. I told our waiter that I'd write him a love letter over it, and here I am! The pappardelle had shredded duck, cheese, and big, fun, chewy noodles that were satisfying to slurp. It just needed a dash of pepper to elevate it. The meat and cheese board included a few things I'd never tried before, and it was so good I was searching for a meat shop in Manhattan so we could buy them again. Portion sizes aren't huge for the price, but it was worth it to us. I somehow managed to be the only customer, although the other places were all so busy, but I think it's because it's easy to miss their adorable entrance or mistake it for the place next door. But I'm glad I didn't miss it, because it was phenomenal. We really enjoyed our meal at Alpina. We took our 4 year old daughter with us and even she was trying all new things she had never eaten before. We started with the meat and cheese board which was delightful followed by splitting the agnolotti, the alpen cheese rosti, and the schnitzel. The schnitzel was the star for us but both the agnolotti and rosti were a version of the dish we had never had before. But having dined at the fanciest restaurants, $10 charge for bread? I think it's unnecessary to charge for bread. Having said that, Gilio is the best wine sommelier! He will recommend perfect pairing to yr dinner. Unique small Italian vineyard. I wish I wasnt the designated driver so I could try his wines. Next time. The pastas orechiete was a bit salty, so was the agnolotti. On the other hand the pork shoulder n halibut needed to be salted. The duck was excellent, juicy meaty not dry. The fried polenta was perfect though! So crispy n buttery. It was my birthday so for desert, I wanted bomboloni ( Italian ricota donut). After ordering it the server came back n advised us that the chef said it didn't come out right n cannot be served. so we went down the street to Ralph's Italian ices for some Italian ices. Hearty Swiss fare was the call on an otherwise drab Thursday night in Greenport. Seated underneath the Alpenhorn in this cozy, empty restaurant at 7 PM, we got the VIP treatment from lead server Joe and excellent advise, plus a taste of the two white wines under consideration. "Following the crowd" and choosing the Kerner white from the Alto Adagio region of Italy was a good call. We wanted a broad dining experience, but since i'm a choosy sharer of dishes, we had to choose carefully to be sated and get the tasting experience we sought. Not to worry, my dining companion and I nailed it. First up was the baby Romaine Ceaser, made tangy with lemon and the addition of the white anchovies; a nice potion with a delicate dressing and a nice coating of shaved cheese and crunchy hazelnuts was a great way to start dinner. Piati segundo was the foraged mushrooms and fennel; incredibly earthy, flavorful morels (?), offset by tangy fennel was a taste sensation. Unfortunatly, our main course ( one huge Schnitzel, enough for two) came out at the same time as our pasta course, the lamb ragu on tagliatelle. Great sauce on beautiful wide noodles, albeit a tad softer than the al dente we would've preferred. The schnitzels however, were crisp, not greasy and with the assorted sides of potatos, lingonberry and pickles, was just what the dr ordered and sufficiently filling to cap off a great tasting dinner, done with financial constraint. With little room for dessert, we choose the ice cream and was pleasantly surpised by the texture and taste disparity between the wine and cheese flavored selections. But no coffee!!?? Words I never thought I'd say: I'm glad the Jitney got to Greenport late, because we were able to walk into Alpina, which was booked earlier. First of all, it's adorable- a tiny wood building, Swiss rustic decor, dominated by an extensive, well-provisioned bar. Very intimate, cozy vibe. Our friendly server recommended the mushroom small plate, which was delicious, with local mushrooms and an unexpected mustard sauce. Cocktails were creative but not over the top- I had the delicious My Log Has Something to Tell You (apparently a Twin Peaks reference), though I swapped Scotch for bourbon, which the bartender was game to do. For large plates, I had the Wiener schnitzel, which was among the best I've ever had- so thin and lightly fried, and enough to take home for lunch today. Served with the tradish lingonberry jam but also pickles, which is inspired. Also had a side of spatzel, which had citrus rind in it, also an inspired choice. My friends had the ramp pasta and the lamb agnolotti, which they raved about. Also, the bread and butter- worth talking about! My wife found Alpina on Yelp looking for something a bit different. Alpina was fantastic! Kind and knowledgeable service. Our waiter was very informed about the wonderful collection of Swiss and Northern Italian wines. He helped us select a full bodied red wine from Italy but explained it was in the German speaking section of Northern Italy. Great recommendation! The food was equally as enjoyable. The beef tare tare with shaved parmesan was a prefect starter. For the entree, veal schnitzel for me- Wow, so simple, so friggin good. My wife had the angliote (butchered the spelling there) stuffed with veal in their version of a cacio e pepe. Of course I sampled! Delicious! Too full for dessert. When in Greenport, we will be back! It was my first time in Greenport Village (I know, I know, shame on me.) I stumbled across this cute wine bar and boy was I blown away! We ordered the Focaccia Egg Sandwich, Spicy Gricia and the Polenta and everything was absolutely delicious! I have not had a quality meal like that in a REALLY long time. The Focaccia Egg Sandwich was toasted to perfection and the prosciutto was not overly salty. The Polenta was my absolute fave! Hands down, the best polenta I ever had. The Spicy Gricia was cooked al dente and the flavors were absolutely beautiful. Lastly, the décor was super cute and our server Erica made the experience even better.
