Foundation is a great gym and I can't stress that enough. I'm very shy, but the people here are so inviting and the culture is unlike a lot of gyms I've experienced. The coaches are very knowledgeable and can give you cues that help you get through each movement properly. They have great energy and will get you through the toughest workouts. I wanted to "spice up" my workouts--working out alone at the gym had become boring and unproductive--and joining this gym was exactly what I needed. Each session burns 2-3 times the calories I would on my own, and the combination of coaching and camaraderie has been incredibly motivating. The coaches and peers push me to achieve far more than I could on my own. I've learned CrossFit movements I never imagined attempting, and my range of motion, flexibility, and strength have all noticeably improved. My only regret: Not joining sooner. The coaching here has been terrific. If you stick to a consistent schedule, you usually get the same coach, which is great--they get to know your strengths, weaknesses, and quirks, tailoring their guidance to help you grow. I'm especially grateful to Tony (the owner) and Jenny (evening classes during the week), whose focus on technique and functional movement has taught me so much. I started Crossfit here because I was having trouble getting into a fitness routine that challenged me, and Crossfit definitely does that! There's always a new challenge to tackle and the coaching team at FCF is amazing. They focus on good form and mobility so that you can take your movements to the next level and ultimately achieve the strength and PRs you want. The beginning/intro/foundation classes are extremely thorough and helpful, and regular Crossfit classes are constantly varied, in a good way. Aside from the classes, the community is welcoming and friendly, and there are many ways to get involved. They're always open to drop ins, too. Foundation CrossFit - Trainers Near Me - Seattle, Washington

I needed to find a new gym and had previous crossfit experience before. They made me do the one week on-ramp to go through their checklist to see if I could complete the movements. This was fine, and I understand why they would want their members to safely go through the movements. Reason why I'm giving one star is because of the coaches. Two different coaches on two different days treated me very poorly. One of them was talking to me like a child and kept yelling at me that I wasn't listening. I asked the other coach to show me what a clean and jerk was, and I asked him to show me one more time. He responded by saying, "I thought you knew what these were from your old gym" in this really irritated attitude and didn't show me twice. If I'm here to learn, I don't expect the coaches to treat me like I'm an idiot, especially if this is during the onboarding week. I believe the coaches are what makes gyms great and I really hated how the coaches seemed like know-it-alls who didn't treat me with any respect. This place is also hard to find. They don't allow for any modifications either (i.e. burpees have to be done with a clap and God forbid if you don't clap). Not sure why every other review has 5 stars. read more

Foundation CrossFit - we are on an epic journey, you and me. Please refer to my previous two posts if you want some background. I continue to stand behind everything that I've written to date. This place, and my experience with them, is a continuously unfolding success story. I am here to add the next chapter. To give you an idea of what can happen when you're open and willing to do the work here, regardless of whatever obstacles/challenges may come your way, here's an update... Since my Foundations On-Ramp class in September 2010: 1. I've lost over 40 lbs. Keep in mind that I've probably added some muscle weight in there, too. 2. I started out doing squats on to a 24-inch box while holding a giant rubber band for support. As of a couple of months ago, I ditched both the box and the band. 3. I started out doing sit-ups on a bench while essentially pulling myself to a sitting position using a thick rubber band. Now I just sit up. 4. A 50 meter uphill walk was enough to make me winded and sweaty. I'm now alternating jogging and walking that same length, often multiple times in a row. Sometimes I feel like running. 5. With few lapses, I've continued to show up for workouts 4-5 times a week. That has never happened before...in my entire life. Now let me tell you how good things can happen for you at Foundation CrossFit - my two-plus cents, based on experience: 1. Surrender to the fact that you have to do work. Your body isn't going to shape itself up, and there is way too much BS out there in the realm of quick fixes. Make peace with this. It took me over 20 years to understand that and then act on it. Don't let the time slip away. 2. Go and meet Andrew, Adam, Paolo and a terrific bunch of talented, supportive and passionate people. Tell them what you want to achieve. See that they really, really want to help you to achieve those things. "Don't overthink it", you'll hear...let them guide you through the process. These people are very smart, very creative and very good at what they do. You're in great hands here. 3. Sign up, learn the movements, learn some solid nutritional information and meet an outstanding community of positive, encouraging and accepting people. Regardless of your fitness or experience level, you will not feel alone here. You will feel welcome. If you don't feel welcome, make sure that you say something about it. I'm thinking that you won't have to, though. 4. Do the work, have fun with it (I kid you not...this really is fun), see the results and, most importantly...FEEL the results. 5. There will be days that are less than perfect (which is totally okay). Go even when you don't want to go...just show up! There will be days when you set personal records (great days, indeed). There will be everything in between. It's all good and it's all an important part of the process, so keep coming back! I've been working out at Foundation CrossFit for just over five months now. When I went there for the first time, I was approaching 500 lbs and I was feeling all kinds of miserable. So much has changed. I'm well on my way, and this place is a huge part of that. MY TIME SPENT HERE IS THE BEST PART OF MY DAY. To be honest, I was one of those girls who was increasingly hesitant to join CrossFit. I was perfectly content with my own little routine at the gym and I loathed the so-called cult aspect. But after being yanked to numerous competitions by my boyfriend and constantly hearing some of my best girlfriends making tremendous gains in their strength, I came to find that it offered so much more. I've worked out at various boxes and Foundation CrossFit far exceeds each one in terms of instruction, knowledge, and passion. All of the trainers are equal in the direction and motivation they provide to their athletes. This is especially important to someone like me who is more often than not intimidated by heavy weights, ropes, and high bars. But because of Foundation's persistent encouragement I am constantly finding myself performing movements I never thought I could. And this support and encouragement extends and is multiplied by each athlete that shares the gym. Their community is incredibly welcoming and will be cheering for you whether you're first or last to finish the WOD. I love the high standards at Foundation. Their programming makes sense and is effective, their facility is clean, they start and end on time, and their training and feedback is consistent. A big emphasis on documenting your workouts, which I've found to be an incredible measure and reference of progress. I always feel like I'm being made to understand the proper movement standards and I appreciate that the trainers will not just call you out on your form but offer suggestions on how to improve or scale your workout and/or push you to the next level. As a perfectionist I'm always looking for ways in which I can attain and push for high standards and goals through my job, personal life, etc. Because of Foundation I can do the same through my workouts as well. Foundation Crossfit - What can I say? These guys treat me like family, and kick my ass every time I work out. I keep going back for the challenge and the fun of it. I started at Foundation Crossfit in October 2018 and have never looked back. I'd go every day if I could afford it! PROS: The regular classes are fun, and everyone is so welcoming. I was worried that I would be intimidated by other crossfitters with lots of experience, but the coaches make an effort to promote inclusivity and positivity. Those with little to no crossfit experience (me) are required to complete a 4 week training course before joining regular Foundation Crossfit classes. While this "on-ramp" course is pretty expensive, I LOVE that the coaches take action to ensure all athletes are trained before using the equipment. CONS: Like most other crossfit gyms in Seattle, this place isn't cheap. However, personally, I'm willing to pay the money to take care of my body and be part of an amazing gym. read more

I just recently joined this gym and I have been having a great time learning and working out here. Andrew and his team taught our Foundations on-ramp course. They focused on form and technique which are really important for all of the different moves we perform in the gym. I learned a lot about my body - where it was strong and weak in the first 4 weeks here. The coaches always provided alternative moves that would adapt to any weakness or injury my body was going through; in the past, these injuries would often discourage me from working out. Can I give them 100 stars? This is the best box. Everyone here is amazing, friendly, helpful, supportive - I literally couldn't ask for a better workout group from any type of exercise. I've been going here since April 2017 and absolutely love it. The best part is that the coaches are knowledgeable and helpful and put form and safety as number 1 priority. Everyone's heard horror stories about Crossfit injuries, but everyone here makes sure you're safe so you don't get hurt and so you get the best workout you can. I can't recommend this box enough. It is well worth my time and money. Again, everyone so friendly it's also easy to make friends here and it becomes a sensible family. Full disclosure: This is my current home gym / CF fam so I might be biased. I've been involved in Crossfit for a couple of years now and have been to plenty of affiliates so I've got a pretty good idea as to how "boxes" vary. The positive thus far: *Professional coaches. They are committed to the CF philosophy so the workouts stay varied and there is plenty of skill work. It isn't the type of place where you show up and do your 15 minute WOD and leave. Form, skill, and mobilization/safety come first. *Community. FCF offers a welcoming and supportive workout environment. People are friendly...but it doesn't have any creepy Crosscult vibes (not that there's anything wrong with that if you're into it!). *Competitions. They host competitions with other gyms in the Seattle area. If your skills are right and tight you will probably get invited to join a competition team. And they have a sister gym that they sometimes have competitions against, which definitely builds a sense of community within and between gyms. Oh yeah, they have a sister gym.... *Sister gym. Crossfit SLU opened after FCF, but is owned by the same dude. So if you live in SLU or Cap Hill you've got a gym with the exact same WODs and sometimes the same trainers. *Additional programming. Lifting. Yoga. Endurance. Diet advice. Recommended extra conditioning. Some for fee and some for free. *French bulldog. They have one of those! So, there's that too. Check them out. I'm a web developer who spends a lot of time sitting in front of a computer. Although I've tried going to the gym several times in my life, it's never really "stuck." Andrew and Adam at Foundation Crossfit make exercise fun. It's what grade school P.E. class should have been like -- fun, supportive, challenging and a significant natural high every time I workout. They go out of their way to make sure you both (1) understand the technique for every motion and (2) why that exact motion/posture is important. I don't know why I've ignored this place since May because it's amazing. Originally, I started lifting weights this past March and I enjoyed it a lot. I was doing some rigorous training that sometimes lasted two and half hours. Now, I did lose a lot of weight and gained tons of muscle, but at the expense of overtraining. That means injuries. I started feeling pains and discomfort on my left wrist and right elbows, which I did not like at all. A lot of the lifting exercises just felt unnatural to me. I knew that if I continued this route, I could seriously hurt myself. So I had a choice, try out Crossfit or deviate from the current program I was following. I chose the former, but that's not all the reasons why I chose Crossfit. At the gym, you see these muscular guys and I've always wondered if they can even run. It's generalizing, but usually weightlifters do not do a lot of cardio because it burns muscles. Also, can the weightlifter even do anything functional with their body. I found the limit of my weightlifting phase when I had to carry a fridge up the stairs. With all the weights I'm lifting, carrying a fridge should be easy right? Wrong. My regime was so focused on having the looks alone that I've sacrificed functionality. This is where Crossfit comes in. Crossfit promotes functional and natural movements. I'm not going to lift a fridge by biceps alone, it'll take an orchestra of muscles to perform the task. I do not want disco muscles. I want fully functional crazy bad ass muscles. There are many Crossfit gyms out there. I've only been to this one. I can't compare it with the other gyms, but I've had plenty of teachers in my life - so I can judge if the instructors are good or not. Let me tell you, Andrew and Adam are kick-ass instructors. They closely watch you when you train. They'll torture you and cheer you on, and you'll like it. At least, I do. Both are always willing to answer and are receptive to questions. They crack jokes while instructing, which helps a lot. They are both very patient,kind, and down-to-earth people. The type of people that'll make you push yourself harder you've ever done mentally and physically. Of course, this isn't limited to the two of them, but everyone else that helps run this place. There's also Colin and Paolo. I've only worked with them a few times, but they are awesome too. So if you ever want to get your ass kicked and make a unicorn cry, and enjoy it at the same time, go to Foundations. read more

I am relatively new to crossfit, but I now completely understand why everyone says it's a cult...it's the best thing I've ever done! I've been going to traditional gyms for years, but this workout method makes me feel stronger than ever and I've learned to do things I never thought I could do. Every workout is full body, intense, and unique. I have no idea what other crossfit gyms are like but I'm continually impressed by this one. The trainers are amazing, and it's not just one or two of them either. They do not slack when it comes to form. The explanations are consistent class after class. I never feel competitive with the others, only with myself, which is great because I'm not usually in front! Everyone is really encouraging and makes you feel like you are part of the group. If you are worried about having to carry things around the block and looking like an idiot, don't worry about it. That's a very small part of the hour and doesn't happen that often:) read more

While visiting Seattle, I wanted to check out the local CrossFit gyms and found Foundation CrossFit. Located in one of the most popular neighborhoods in Seattle, Capitol Hill; it may be a small CrossFit gym but it's been one of my all time favorite CrossFit gyms to workout at. Instructors and members are super friendly and knowledgeable on technique and form. There's a lot of pride in this box and there is a great sense of community here, which is a rare find in a gym. If you are visiting, the cost is $20 but you do get a super cool t-shirt! Go WOD your heart out! read more

I joined FCF in 2012 -- and it was one of the best decisions I've made for my health and happiness. The instructors at FCF are professional and engaging. They don't make you feel like customers, but approach you with genuine interest in helping you become stronger -- and make sure the path is customized for each person (read: You don't have to be Dwayne Johnson to be working out here). They promote general active lifestyle, and there's no fixed ideal that they pigeon hole you into. They teach you new skills, help you gain confidence and best of all, make sure you have fun. I always leave my class feeling accomplished, healthy and happy, regardless of how I felt when I walked in. The new facility, FCF 4.0, is large, clean and is a big playground for crossfit enthusiasts. Lots of pull-up bars, rings to work on; rowers and airdyne to help you get your heart rate up the old fashioned way; a changing room and cubbies to store your things; and couches to relax before and after work out. Finally, this place isn't just about getting fit and living healthy, but meeting friendly and motivated people who will cheer you on during the most grueling burpee sessions, and then go out for drinks with you afterwards to have a blast. I've met so many great people at FCF and they make my classes that much more enjoyable. The people here, the instructors and athletes, are really the best reason to join FCF; because sometimes when I feel lazy, I get motivated to come in just so I can be a part of this wonderful community. After a wrist injury and a full year- long laziness, i started crossfit last month. I was horribly out of shape, could barely run 2 miles without stopping, and my upper body strength was close to nothing. If P.E. was your favorite subject growing up, say hey. HAAAYYYYYYY!!!! Not really. I hated P.E. But I would have if Andrew and his staff were my teachers! The best of the best! I trained with these people for about a year and all I can say is that they are the best in Seattle. No matter what fitness level, they have a place for everyone. Regular crossfit classes are for busy people who want to get the most productive, fun and challenging workout that could be fit within an hour. There are also Level 2 classes that are designed for advanced athletes who plan on competing (these classes are about 2 hours long). Kettlebell, Hellafit and mobility classes are also there to cover other important attributes of being strong, fit and healthy. All the coaches are incredibly knowledgeable and they all have their own unique ways of teaching techniques that overall gives an athlete an amazing variety of feedback about correct form, motivation and support. Every coach you come across will give you their own valuable feedback about what you should be doing right. I was especially fond of their diligence on covering all of the important aspects of Olympic lifting and other technical crossfit movement every single class! Athletes are also the most amazing people of all. If you are also looking for some solid friendship. This is the place! I hate writing so I'm going to keep it short. This place has completely transformed my life for the better. Foundation CrossFit starts with a month long orientation - which at first seems daunting, but quickly you realize how vital orientation is for starting XF. New athletes learn how to properly, effectively, and safely do movements. The trainers encourage you to ask questions and stick around if you're having issues with anything. They also encourage you to be safe and "take inventory" of your body and be a smart athlete. The trainers are happy to help you figure out the best possible work out for you and your needs. I've been going to this Crossfit for about three months now and...it's awesome. I was really busy for the first month and a half but am going about 4 times a week and am seeing huge gains in my strength and cardio. I ride my bike to commute and every day I feel like I am able to get up cap hill with a harder gear than the time before. I am able to do full push-ups again and can do a dead hang pull-up, and I know that I will see nothing but improvement. The owners and trainers at this gym really care about their clients and are just fun to be around. They are encouraging and accepting of everyone's fitness level. Anyone can do this! I can't say enough good things about Foundation CrossFit. Coming to a CrossFit gym for the first time can be really intimidating. I emailed Foundation to get a little more info about joining and what their gym was like. I got a very prompt response from Adam and he invited me to come in and chat and have a quick workout. Adam is awesome. From minute one I felt totally welcome, and they went out of their way to make me feel comfortable. They have a great Foundations program each month for new people looking to get started where you can sign up with a small group and learn the basics of CrossFit movements and see what the regular daily workouts are like. I didn't want to wait for the next group class, so I met with Adam one-on-one over a couple of weeks and he took me through everything. The bottom line is these guys seriously know their stuff and they are super supportive and the entire gym is a great group of people of all different skill levels that are all stoked about working hard and supporting each other. I've worked out at other CrossFit gyms before, and none took the time that these guys take each day to go through the movements and help people reach their goals. The best part is, you can tell they are totally into not just CrossFit but also their members, and they are always willing to answer questions and help you learn how to improve. What to say that hasn't been said about this awesome box? Checked it out while in town for a visit and was greeted warmly and folded seamlessly into a class. They have all the equipment you need laid out in a way that makes sense and doesn't feel crowded, even in big classes. Coaches/owners are very hands on and Tony gave me a great tip for my cleans that I will carry with me! Will definitely be back whenever I'm in the area. read more

The pros - Beautiful gym with lots of great equipment. This is a seriously awesome gym with a very well-thought out design and attention to detail. A true crossfit gym. Personable coaches and community. Cons - As a drop-in this place is expensive, hard to find, parking is challenging and you will likely have to pay for it. The only way I found the location was seeing someone else that looked like a crossfitter walk through the relatively obscure entrance. For a drop-in this is a three star location. If I were a regular I imagine my score would be different. read more

Then I tried some classes at foundation and they the coaches showed to be very cautious and care about proper form and well-being of each athlete. That gave me a lot of confidence to pursue crossfit! Overall 5-5 Highly recommend a WOD or two or three if your new or experienced in cf. If you do a drop in you get a free t-shirt! If your new the instructors do a great job of explaining proper form and technique. If your experienced and need a challenge then stop resting and push!!! There are plenty of tools here to make you lay on the floor in the fetal position after 20 minutes. People are real friendly and the place has such a welcoming and positive energy. The space is big for the amount of people in the WOD and there is plenty of air and room for a class of 10. Trainers 5-5 Worked with Andrew and Paolo and had an awesome WOD with each (zing!). Very helpful and motivated. Equipment/Setup 4-5 Ropes, tires, and sand bags on top of the typical gear. Big plus on the bumper plates and the newer lever bar clips. Crowd 4-5 Having done CrossFit for a while most of the people in my WODS seemed like they were newer. Didn't see any real BEASTS but I went during the morning or mid morning time so the beasts could still be sleeping. That being said EVERYONE had good positive vibes and were encouraging each other. WODs 4-5 Warm ups were good especially for the amount of people in the class. There was emphasis on Olympic lifts before the actual WOD. WODs themselves were fun and challenging even though we didn't use the tire or ropes. Maybe next time 5 rounds 400m run / rope climb no legs / tire flip up and down the ramp... read more

Joining Foundation CrossFit (through it's sister gym CrossFit SLU) has been the best fitness decision of my life. It's given me a more advanced understanding of how the body moves, how to make it stronger and more flexible. It's given me a place to push myself and celebrate my achievements. The trainers aren't just interested in my Deadlift, they are interested in making me a better version of myself, and they do that by making me part of their family. They give you personal attention not because it's their duty, because it's their pleasure. They email you to see how it's going not because it's good customer service, but because they look at their members as family. As far as fitness goes, I'm the type of guy whose been active and "working out" his whole life. I've completed triathlons, I've done long open water swims in the ocean, I've rock climbed for weeks in Thailand, I've always held a gym membership... As far as fitness was concerned, before I joined I thought I was in "college". I didn't "need" a personal trainer- I thought I had the fundamentals down. I've quickly learned that when I started, I wasn't in college, I was in elementary school. I could move, yes, but there were better ways that I could move, ones that were less prone to injury, and ones that would help me perform better. Better ways for me to build flexibly, strength and endurance. Better ways to train. Better ways to eat. And I've learned all of this without the least bit of pretentiousness from anyone at the gym. It works because it isn't an environment where there is one authority and the rest of us are students. The trainers themselves consider themselves students, and are perhaps the best students of us all. They spend more time learning and training than the members themselves! Now when I talk to other friends about their workout routine, they look to me as if I'm a personal trainer. I'm not. Far from it. But what I do have is nine months in one of the most fun schools I've been a part of: Foundation CrossFit & CrossFit SLU. Thank you for teaching me and making me a part of your family. And as far as how Foundation CrossFit compares to other CrossFit gyms... As a founder of a Fitness App (Cody), I have the opportunity to visit many gyms. Foundation CrossFit and its sister gym (CrossFit SLU) are best in class for their environment, facilities, training, and programming. My cousin actually drives an hour and a half on the weekends just to attend their weekend events. If you're thinking about joining, stop. Just join. I've been going to FCF for years at this point and it has been a favorite spot in the city since day 1. The coaches are knowledgeable, friendly, excited about the gym and go above and beyond in making sure that you are getting the workout that you are looking for. The space is really cool. Excellent location on Cap Hill and the gym itself has everything you could need. It gets packed but in the best way. Everyone cheers for each other and the vibe is energetic. The actual classes have kicked my butt for years and I love them. Recently I've been doing the HIIT classes more than anything and they have gotten me into the best shape I've ever been. As a woman I appreciate the balance of women to men and how many women coaches there are. Overall the gym is great for a killer workout but you stay because FCF has created such a welcoming community. read more

I joined the Foundations On-Ramp program with my boyfriend 2 months ago -- me to strength train to supplement my other activities and my boyfriend to lose weight. We began with a dash of skepticism given all the stories and videos we've heard/seen about CrossFit, but we were pleasantly surprised by the pace and content of the on-ramp classes. They're taught by the owners of the gym, with a good portion of each class spent breaking down various lifts and movements with a focus on safety and form, and the rest spent getting your butt kicked by an intense workout. After on-ramp, we've been regularly attending classes, and we both love the variety of workouts - Olympic lifts, tabata kettlebells, burpees (of course), just to name a few. If you have any injuries or areas of weakness, the coaches are happy to help scale workouts. There are classes available almost every hour of the day, and they've got a handy app hooked up to their calendar. The coaches are friendly and helpful, and the community is super supportive. If you're on the fence, go check out one of the HIIT or kettlebell classes that are open to non-members! read more
