I've been training at Flex for almost 5 years now, at least once a week. It's kind of become part of who I am. I came in in 2014 as an injured runner who needed to mix things up and build some strength to reduce injury issues. I had a consult with Ron (the owner) after some googling, and he set me up with Katie. Katie is a great fit for me! And is great in general! A couple points I like about the gym: It's pretty small and there's a good sense of community. People are friendly and talk to each other. I think since people are mostly always with a trainer, people aren't on their phones/headphones like I've seen at other gyms. Also, the ratio of women at the gym is higher than other places, which is a plus. And lots of LGBTQ folks around too. For me, the location of the gym is really convenient between home & work. Oh, and huge packages for training - just pay your trainer directly by the session. I love that. Each trainer is self-employed (and pays rent to Flex) so you're working directly with them. Personally I venmo Katie for 4 sessions at a time because that works for us. She's very flexible with carrying over, rescheduling if I need, etc. About Katie as a trainer: She's cool and has become someone I very much consider a friend. She's encourage me to set bold goals and push myself, while also being kind and encouraging. For me, I'm not interested in losing weight and I like that she doesn't focus on that. (I think if losing weight is important to you she would support you, though.) In fact, sometimes I get into negative self-talk thinking about the numbers and she's always encouraging me to think more about how strong I have become. And I have gotten so strong! I didn't think of myself as a weightlifter before but now it's legitimately one of my favorite activities. read more

I've been training with James at Flex for four months now and am absolutely loving it! He is an excellent trainer for all body types. I am a smaller gal and have never felt this strong in my life! Any time I saw Ron in the window he would wave and every few months when I would see him outside I would tell him that I wanted to come in and he would simply reply "when you are ready I am here" accompanied by his amazing and sincere smile. This is a very long overdue review as I've been training at Flex with Katie several times a week for almost three years now. I don't really see any reason to stop anytime soon, only to recover after giving birth soon. First of all, I'll write about the gym itself. It's well equipped, and has everything a savvy trainer could ever need to whip someone into shape. Now this is not the place to be doing your cardiovascular exercise, like running on a treadmill or using the elliptical. Clients see an individual trainer who follows their goals and adapt exercise plans accordingly. Generally, the atmosphere at Flex is fun and relaxed, and women like me who had a somewhat limited weight training experience prior to starting there will feel at ease, which is not a given in the fitness world.  Now the trainer: I've only ever trained with Katie, save for a few sessions with Kyle (who has a very different style but is great too) while she was out of town one week. Katie is an amazing personal trainer, period. First she is a really cool individual which is always a good start, she is genuinely interested in her clients and she is fun to be around. She caters her training skills to your individual goals, helps with nutrition advice and has a generally positive outlook which is amazingly refreshing. I've broken two bones (right wrist and toe) in the three years I've trained with her and she always managed to find ways to train around it, when others would have just been, "forget about it". Currently I am still training as I'm pregnant and my due date is coming up, and she's adapted to that too. There simply never is a reason to quit! And you won't want to.  Her training style is varied, never goes stale or boring. I simply look forward to going training. It's efficient too: I've gotten a lot stronger even though I still feel like I have a long way to go, and it's made me feel a lot more positive about my body and abilities.  After having worked with some other trainers, the one amazing thing with Katie is that she is really into her job and it shows: she is always learning new stuff, deepening her toolbox all the time, never has a pretentious know-it-all attitude and she manages to get the best out of her clients, regardless of their goals.  If you're wondering how to get back in shape, the best way is to find something that won't require crazy amounts of will power everytime you go. Motivation is key to start, then discipline takes over, it really helps if it's enjoyable too! I used to live a block from Flex and used to cross this gym pretty often but never walked in as I was skeptic about the rush due to the size of the gym. I was impressed with the reviews online and gave it a shot. I trained with Eric Perry for a little less than a year and he helped me work towards my fitness goals which were only in my head till now. He helped me lose 20 pounds, reduce my waist size by 4 inches and get a muscular definition to my body. I loved the transformation and would strongly recommend this place and Eric! Flex training gym is a gem of a gym nestled in on Madison street in Capitol Hill. These days, cross fit gyms and chain gyms are all over the place. Most of them have young, inexperienced trainers and lack one on one instruction with trainers. Lots of injuries and lack of results follow. Flex is great. No judgement, no crowds, no obnoxious gym goers.. Just clients and their trainers getting results. Ron, the owner, is an honest man and along with the trainers here, extremely knowledgable. You can pay by the session - you are not locked into or sold gym memberships or thousand dollar packages. If you want to gain muscle, lose fat and tone up - set up an appointment. I love this gym, I love Ron, and I really love my incredible trainer Bella Northrup (Fit BodyRx)! I could go on and on about this nice place and these great people, but let me tell you these three things: 1) I have been a steady size 10-12 for years and have never enjoyed strength training.* After seven weeks training with Bella (and that actually includes one week off for a vacation in Mexico), I bought my first ever size 8 jeans...and they're already loose. Must shop. Best problem EVER. *(I really love going to strength training, now. Bella makes it super fun, which is crazy and unexpected.) 2) I'm getting married, and my dress seamstress is mad because I keep losing weight and "messing up the dress." I don't care if I swim down the aisle in it, I'm thrilled! 3) The first two points are just BONUS: I originally came in to work on my weak knees. All pain has gone away since building the muscle. I can't believe I didn't come in sooner, but I am SO glad I finally figured it out! If you're nervous, you shouldn't be -- everyone here is really cool and into helping you figure it out. For years I've fallen off of the fitness wagon until I joined up with a trainer at Flex Gym. The gym is very friendly, great atmosphere, and I would recommend any of the trainers to any potential client. Personally I have Neil Stephen as a trainer, a previous professional boxer, but what a sweet and nice guy! Not only will he give you boxing lessons if you desire with your training session, but he'll customize your training sessions and set up a fitness and dietary plan and goals for you. After only a couple months I started receiving comments from my friends and coworkers on how good I was looking. If you told me a year ago that I will start to feel comfortable wearing a tank-top this approaching summer, I wouldn't have believed you. But with the help of Neil, I can see that goal as being very attainable. When I was doing my search for a trainer, before joining up with Neil or Flex Fitness in that matter, I was very nervous and worried about finding a LGBT friendly trainer. This is a clean gym loaded with every kind of equipment. It's lit by rows of large windows and has easy street parking. I work out there with my trainer, Neil Stephens, and enjoy being in the space. The entire staff seem knowledgeable, helpful and are friendly. Best of all, each trainer is working closely with only one client so you can really hear your trainer and concentrate on what you're doing. Not all gyms with lots of weight equipment go out of their way to make women feel comfortable and a part of things, this one does. That is probably due to the owner, Ron, exercising sound judgment about who he allows to work there. I also appreciate the time and attention devoted to keeping everything very well maintained. I discovered Flex when I knew I was outgrowing my personal trainer. I knew I needed to lift more and not focus on so much cardio. My old trainer was limited on what she could provide- plus she was super flakey cancelling at least once a week.. I met with Ron and shared a lot of my frustrations and expectations moving forward. My life is super busy and he not only had trainers for me to choose from ; but he 1st made sure his gym was going to be the right fit. That's what I like about Ron, the owner, at Flex. At first, I was super nervous because Shea believes in what she does so much so that she actually looks the part! We immediately clicked and she is always on time and has never canceled once! (Actually, I think all the trainers have her work ethic.) I am with Shea up to 4 times a week. Before flex, I was talking to a friend about my frustration about my old trainer. I was trying to fjnd reasons to stay I guess and I said, "well I kinda like her" and my friend immediately said," your trainer isn't supposed to be sorta liked...this is your Bff of the gym. " That's how I feel about Shea. She holds me accountable, let's me complain during leg day , as long as I'm doing those damn squats, and would do anything possible to help anyone she knew get fit, healthy and happy in a heart beat. I got so much value out of switching gyms. I found a partner in crime in Shea, I am reaching all my goals and I can't imagine a life where I'm not working out at some level each week. I feel through this year they have given me the tools to live a happy better life for sure. So my advice to you: Put down those "How to lose this or that Books" and just go to Flex. I started training with Ron in October of 2014. I came to him wanting to bulk up and take weightlifting more seriously and he was more than excited to help me on my weight lifting journey. I've been coming here for a few months, and I have nothing to say but good things. While it's a little small initially, the trainers work around each other and there's never much of an issue in terms of waiting for space. It's always clean, well lit, and in a safe neighborhood. I work with Kate, and she's quite literally a godsend. She's great at understanding your limitations without making you feel badly about not being in great shape at the beginning like me! She'll push you but also ensure that you have a great time as well. I'm always surprised at how quickly my hour goes by because she's a great conversationalist, and very encouraging. It's nice to have someone there to celebrate with me when I set a new PR. I never feel like she's just waiting for me to finish my set so she can get out of there and go home, which was one of my main concerns. She's genuinely concerned with my progress, and that's fantastic. She's also super flexible with my ever changing schedule, which is really great. I've been coming here for a few months and have had a really good experience. It's scrupulously clean, gay-friendly, woman-friendly, all-fitness-levels-friendly, well equipped, and not at all crowded (at least on weekday mornings, when I typically work out). What more could you want? I was particularly encouraged that when I came in, nobody measured my body fat, put my data into a fancy software system, or printed out a detailed diet plan. These tools probably all have a potential role in fitness, but gyms seem to more typically use them to create the illusion of providing value without having to involve too much human expertise. Flex is more of a no-BS environment that focuses on actual exercise. I don't really need a stack of charts to convince me it's money well spent because I can see the actual results. The business model here is similar to a hair salon. The owner, Ron, does intake interviews and suggests a trainer to work with. However, the trainers are all independent and there is no "house" training program. Your experience will vary depending on who you train with. I've been seeing Joe Kobor, who's excellent. He's a traditionalist; if you work with him, you'll be doing lots of free-weight squats and presses. He does use some machines as well, but the emphasis is predominantly on good form and on doing lots of variations of a few basic exercises. He has decades of experience with this stuff and is very good at giving feedback and corrections. His diet plan is a one-pager that's easy to understand and follow: high protein, low carb, divided into many small meals about 2 hours apart, ~2000 calories/day. I've never had a regular exercise routine in my life. Gyms always made me feel extremely uncomfortable - I had no idea how to use the equipment, and personal trainers are typically very arrogant and unapproachable. As a gay man, I was also concerned about finding an LGBT-friendly gym where I wouldn't feel judged or uncomfortable. I was surprised to find that Flex met all of my criteria. The trainers are Flex are all extremely friendly, welcoming, and supportive, and they all know their stuff. The atmosphere is focused but fun - in between sets, people usually joke around and swap stories of their weekends, adding a friendly neighborhood vibe to the gym. I've never felt uncomfortable during a workout at Flex, ever - this may be the most LGBT friendly gym I've ever seen! :) The facilities themselves are great - the gym is very clean, with a wide variety of workout equipment. At any given time there are at most four trainers working with their clients, meaning that there's plenty of room for everyone. Since I began working out here, I've lost weight and gained an unbelievable amount of muscle! For the first time in my life, I felt comfortable wearing a tank top this past summer - in public! I just started at FLEX about six weeks ago and have already started to see more muscle definition and I have lost about 10 pounds of fat. The gym is very clean and a good size for an urban training center. I've been to other city gyms and basically you are walking all over each other while doing your training. However at Flex there are only a few trainers working at the same time! My trainer is Ron, who also owns the gym and he really knows his stuff. I'm a college athlete and needed to keep up with my workouts over summer so I've been working with one of the trainers at Flex, Chad Ryan, for the past few months to stay in shape. Chad is a great trainer! He is extremely kind, attentive, flexible, and fun while still pushing me to work hard and make progress. Chad takes care to understand your goals and asses your ability when planning sessions and he's always coming up with new exercises to keep workouts exciting! Chad has been beyond amazing, helping me get through my school's summer workout program and reach my personal goals as well. Flex is a smaller gym, but thats part of what I love about it. They have all the equipment I need and I don't have to navigate a large, busy gym to use different machines. It is never very crowded, but on busier days the trainers and clients have no problem working around each other since everyone is very friendly! The location is convenient too; there are coffee shops, grocery stores, and restaurants near by so when I'm coming in before or after work I can grab something to eat and run errands. Let's face it, gyms can be intimidating, overly busy (in the eyes of the client), impersonal, dirty and at the end of the day--an excuse to simply say, "I worked out". I've been training at Flex for almost a year now with James, and it's definitely the most comfortable I've ever felt in a gym. In terms of the logistics, the location's great, and the space is perfect for personal training. Flex is not as big as one of the chain gyms, but it doesn't need to be. The trainers all work together to work in and make sure their clients hit their routines. The equipment is new, clean, and always in working order. You can tell that this is Ron's second home, and he keeps it in order personally. But as cliche as it sounds, I think the best thing about Flex is the people. Ron's great and so are all of the trainers he brings in. They're all naturally knowledgeable about fitness, nutrition, and wellness, but they're also just good people. They're friendly and respectful of both the clients and the gym. There's no judging, no pretense, no macho BS here. Just hard work. I love Flex! I've been working out for about 7 months and have definitely seen results. It's a smaller space, but it's never crowded and they have all right equipment to help you reach your goals. Scott is a fantastic trainer. I never used to like working out, but he's incredibly knowledgeable and keeps you motivated. Scott has an "old school" approach to weight lifting, which I have really come to appreciate because I've never seen results like this before. With Scott, you're gonna be pumping iron, not balancing on a medicine ball or doing yoga poses. But they have a range of trainers who all have a slightly different approach. The owner Ron is really helpful in pairing you up with someone who fits your style. Scott has been great for me. Personal training is such an investment, of time, money, and sweat. One who has tried many "personal trainers" in the past, I have to say this is the first place to really help me achieve the results I wanted. There are a variety of trainers to work with, I have been working with Ron (owner) for about 8 months, and lost about 15 lbs of fat, and went from 22% body fat to under 16%. My waist size went down almost 3 inches too. I never thought I would see that day!
