We got $2,000 worth of lumber from this company for a deck that we built in our backyard last month. The mistake that we made was not seeing and feeling the wood before we ordered it. We just went to their lumberyard and ordered what we needed assuming that they had quality redwood. When it was delivered it was so dry that it was wasn't even red. One of the boards is split down the middle. We are going to have to stain and coat our deck immediately before it gets any dryer. Because of the poor quality of wood from Foster, we went to Ashby lumber in Concord for the wood that we built our steps and railing out of and the difference is night and day in quality. Ashby's wood is a beautiful color and so fresh and appealing to the eye. We have leftover lumber from both Foster and Ashby and you can easily spot which wood came from where, the crappy wood from Foster and beautiful wood from Ashby. We wish we built our entire deck in wood from Ashby. I recommend avoiding Vallejo's Foster lumber yard and making the trip to Ashby in Concord. I gave 2 stars because our deck still looks nice in the end but when you take into consideration the quality in wood between the two places, it's a no brainer and we would not be back here. read more

Called and asked for a specific product. I was told they had it in stock. Made a special trip to Vallejo. When i asked for the product no one knew the code, asked who I spoke with and just looked at each other. We looked in the yard to no avail. I was given a price and quantity over the phone. Strange Biling for a credit deposit account? Foster Lumber set up an account for my famiy l where I mailed them a check to deposit towards delivering purchased building materials. They did not want a credit card account although I have a clean and active financial profile--paying bills a day or two once they arrive. The agreement they proposed was when my credit balance was low, (below $100) they would send a reminder to send another deposit--which I did. My son was hospitalised, with brain bleeding-had a surgery, rehab for a year-unable to work. We were not abe to shop, thus no transactions--no purchases. They refuse to refund, to close the account, and now are threatening a collection process as they are posting a monthly charge--CHARGE FOR NOTHING despite the fact we had a positive credit balance! The + account balance was around $50-when it became dormant. Now we recieve billing saying we OWE an outstanding balance of $123.10! I asked for a refund and closure of the account. No reply? My lawyer suggested first I ask Senator Dodd's staff to work this case. If no resolution and apology, my lawyer will take the next step. They aren't taking masks seriously enough. Out in the yard is kind of understandable but in the store this afternoon management wasn't wearing masks or employees had their nose sticking out. I Love my local independent lumber yard but I'm taking a break while they figure it out. read more

Had a problem with a billing/payment issue...the woman that handled it - Diane or Diana was nothing short of being a b_t_h! When I asked for her she was informing an employee that she had the owners ear and he would do what ever she said. Everyone else there was fine, but when this woman came to the desk, they all bowed their heads...now I know why and why the counter person said he was sorry. read more

I'm so glad I decided to check this place out! I was looking for some pieces to make a wooden sign. Foster Lumbar had a wide selection of wood!! Not only did I love the variety of pieces, but their customer service was excellent. Since I am new at wood working, I had no clue which nails or bracket to use, to hold my sign together. The sales associate took time to offer suggestions, and even gave me a few complimentary nails to take home so I could experiment. Don't know what was going on this morning...there was a customer in front of me asking about dado cuts, he man said he'd made arrangements with another employee (who wasn't in) the employee "helping" him said they would have to charge xtra for that, the man said that was fine, he'd spoken to the other employee about it. Then the employee guy said , "I don't think we do that here". {didn't you just say it would cost xtra}. The customer asked when the other guy he'd spoken to earlier in the week would be in. I'm a visual person and he showed me all the different options they had for decking material. I have gone into Foster Lumber yard off and on for years, and after yesterday, August 3, 2011, I will no longer buy anything from them. We were given a nice piece of pine board so we could replace the top of our worn dresser. It needed 2 straight cuts. We paid $10. took the piece out to the yard, which was already marked for the size we needed. Mr. David Jones met us, and said, "oh we can't cut it lenght wise, just cross cut" We followed him back into the show room and he whispered something to the clerk, Lisa, then he walked away. I asked what was that he said and she said they won't cut any lumber that is not bought there, I replied that is alful petty. Not her fault and she said she was sorry as she credited our debit card, she didn't know that was the pratice there. We then went down to Ace, they charged us $2.00 with no attitude about us not buying our sheet of wood from them. Shame on you Mr. David Jones!! read more

I came here last week in hopes of supporting a local business, and purchasing quality redwood lumber. I'm very disappointed with what I was sold, and how my business was handled. I was replacing the bottom trim of my old early 1900 home. I originally went to Lowe's and purchased 0.625 x 3.375 x 120 redwood trim boards, but found I had two windows over the 120" length. On Monday, I made it home early enough to check out Foster Lumber. I was VERY specific on the project I was working on and the wood I was looking for. I told the sales associate I spoke with that I was looking for a solid plank of redwood for my window trim, and that I had gone to Lowe's since they were closed the day before, but that they didn't have a solid plank of redwood long enough for the windows. I also told him that if they didn't have it in solid redwood I would buy a different kind of wood, and that Lowe's had longer planks of other kind of wood but I wanted redwood, and that if I couldn't find it I would buy something else. He told me they had it, and that it would cost more than a plank of pine. I told him I wanted it to match the rest of the house since everything was redwood. He showed me a piece of board that has well over the measurement I needed; it was painted gray, and this is were my disappointment starts!!!! He said it was redwood. He failed to mention it wasn't a solid piece of redwood, even after I mentioned this was specifically what I was looking for. It wasn't until I got home that I noticed the joined pieces (glued) of different length wood. This point, however, was not the first that got me feeling indifferent about this business, actually more than indifferent PISSED. So he rings me up for two pieces of 16 ft. length. I tell him I need them cut to fit in my car, and that I can finalize the precision cuts at home with my table saw. The final price for the two pieces and the cuts ~$65. I pay, and he tells me to drive around to the yard and show one of the guys my invoice, and that they would pull the wood and cut it for me. I follow his directions. I show one of the guys in the back my invoice, and he tells me he'll grab the boards and to open my trunk. I have to clarify that the invoice states the boards are to be cut. This is the moment I feel like I start getting attitude from this guy. I wait for him to start up the saw and cut the wood. I noticed him fumble with the planks, but didn't think anything of it, until he puts them in my car. (At this point I still haven't noticed that the planks I was sold are not solid; he placed the cut edge first when I was walking towards the back of the car to see if he needed help). I look at the painted ends of the planks, and try to line the edges up. THESE ARE NOT STRAIGHT PIECES OF WOOD!!!! I mention this to the guy and he says, "Oh, you wanted them straight?" Um, yeah, I want them straight. I didn't realize I had to specify this at a lumber yard were this is literally what you specialize in. Mind you, I would have checked to see if they were straight if I had been allowed to pull the pieces myself. I tell him to check both of them, he tells me oh, just the bottom one isn't straight without pulling them from the car. I say again, check them. He grabs the bottom one and gives it an eye, then barely lifts the other plank and tells me it's straight. He goes, grabs another board and cuts it, shoves it in the car, and, clearly irritated, asks if that is all. I remind him of my invoice; he hands it back to me visibly annoyed. When I get home and take out the boards, I notice that the cut ends show glued wood, not solid wood. $65 later and I'm left with materials I can't use. The glued strips align exactly with where I need to nail. On top of the poor quality of the material, low and behold, the boards aren't straight. Learned my lesson in regards to supporting this local business. Even though the personality of the sales associate that originally helped me was helpful, knowing now what I was sold I feel like I was taken advantage of. At any point during his assistance he could have informed me this was a glued piece of material. read more

Not so sure about their products being anything special. However, there is simply a lack of professionalism at the front desk. I witnessed a very demeaning behavior towards an assistant in the front showroom by the person working the counter and then, overheard a loud, telephone conversation laced with profanity, joking but, unprofessional nonetheless. I was shocked to witness this from a representative of a company at the front desk. Did he think this was cute or cool? Clearly he seemed to be very arrogant. Advice: No need to speak to your workers in such a dehumanizing and unprofessional way. I left and drove up to Napa for my purchase. Don't need to support his kind of attitude or lack of professionalism. These days, all we have is the freedom to take our business elsewhere. read more

Great local yard. They have exotic hardwoods, knowledgeable staff, and a vast array of fasteners' . They cost a little bit more than the big box stores, but the time I save shopping at Foster's is more valuable than saving $1.25 on a box of screws, but spending 30 minutes navigating HD or Lowe's.
