They were really busy Christmas Day night. We placed an order for pickup and were told 45 minutes. After 90 minutes, I asked for and received a refund. They were closing at 9:30 and were seating people at 9:15. The lobby was filled with people waiting for their phone in order. One of the best options for Chinese food in the Munster/ Highland/ Hammond area. The food is great, portions are generally generous. Great egg rolls. The staff is courteous and friendly. You will definitely have a better experience if you have Paul as your waiter. He is so kind. He makes you feel like family and will remember you. Hubby and I were searching for a place open for Chinese food on Christmas and sadly our usual places weren't open, but Fortune House was. So we thought it was the perfect chance to try someplace new. We called in our order for pick up and were told it would take an hour before our order of pot stickers and two entrees would be ready. Although that is kind of a long time, we were fine with this and assumed they were busy as one of the few places open on Christmas night. We arrived to pick up our food an hour and 15 minutes later and the food still wasn't ready, no problem, we hung out for the half hour it took to finish our order. We got home and were finally ready to dig in, but the food had literally no taste! I ordered the chicken lo mein and it tasted like dirty dish water and some of the chicken was raw in the middle, yuck. I had to drown the noodles in soy sauce to choke down a bite or two. Hubby ordered the Fortune Special (usually if they name the dish after the restaurant it's a safe bet) and he could barely eat more than a bite or two (hubby happily eats anything). Needless to say we will not be eating here ever again, it's a wonder they're still in business. Overall a huge disappointment. read more

Ok, I think Chinese food is like sex - when it's good, it's good, and when it's bad, it's still pretty good. I've tried Chinese food from coast to coast, and I've had some that's great and some not-so-great (Chinese food, that is. ;) ). What we had from Fortune House was great! My husband is NOT a big fan of Chinese food and always orders the same thing when I talk him into having Chinese food: Sesame Chicken. He RAVED about this sesame chicken. Likewise, my daughter's sweet and sour chicken was awesome! If you're looking for the neon red/orange sauce, you'll be disappointed. This sauce was more subtle (and naturally colored!). When I order pot stickers, I expect the generic ones you can get from your local Schwann's delivery guy, but these were obviously handmade and delicious! The one not-so-great item was the hot and sour soup. It wasn't as hot and sour as I like it, but I like it pretty hot and sour. AND - this just keeps getting better - they DELIVERED IT TO OUR HOTEL ROOM!! I wish this place was closer than a 9-hour drive from my house... read more

Fortune House may look inside and out like an excellent Chinese restaurant , but in fact it is not. I am a big fan of chinese food and its kinda hard for me to say that a particular chinese restaurant is not good. If i could remember correctly the restaurant used to be called "New Moon" before it was bought by "Fortune House". I really wish that this did not happen, because the food that "New Moon" served was amazing. Their everything was good from beef lou mein to the egg drop soup.One time i bought sweet and sour pork from Fortune House, and it looked like it was left over from the day before then refried. It was so bad that i gave a piece to my dog, and he didn't want to eat it. The only thing that Fortune House really has that is worth getting from there are the egg rolls, but even then there still not as good as "New Moon's". So if your ever in the mood for chinese food, just do what i do, pick up the egg rolls from fortune house, and get better chinese food somewhere else. read more

Don't bother... Tried this place twice and disappointed both times. Teriyaki chicken was inedible. The sauce was extra thick, extra salty and extra burnt. As soon as I took a bite, I could feel my fingers swell from all the salt. The guys had beef and broccoli which was mostly broccoli with very fatty meat and too much salt. Only edible item was the jumbo egg roll. The flavor was decent but very greasy. The frying oil seemed a little past it's expiration period. Decided to try again for a big family take out order. The 2 different kinds of fried rice we got were not edible. They used WAY TOO MUCH soy sauce. Enjoyed a delicious lunch combo that was an incredible bargain. Cup of egg drop soup (my husband said it was the best egg drop soup he ever had!), egg roll, and crab rangoon were all included along with hot tea- we were stuffed before our entrees even arrived. The service here was very good but the food not so much. We ordered the chicken satay for an appetizer and that was good. The two entrees, beef fried rice and cashew shrimp were not. The beef in the beef fried rice was fatty and the entire dish was was greasy. The only thing on the cashew shrimp that w good was the toasted cashews. The shrimp was not completely deveined and quite gross. This is the first time I sent a meal back. They replaced it with cashew chicken. The chicken was slimy and the vegetables and sauce were not flavorful. I left most of that I eaten. The hot tea was a nice touch and tasted good on a chilly evening. I ordered the chicken and greenbeans lunch combo and when I got back to my office to eat it, they gave me just greenbeans! There was no meat at all. When I called they asked for my name and number and said the owner would issue me a credit and they would have him call me. I ate my greenbeans and rice as I had no other lunch option. When the owner called he said he will give me 20% off my next order. I told him that he needed to give me the whole meal for free, that 20% wouldn't even cover my gas to get there. As a long-term resident of Munster, I've seen changes at this location over the years. When the old "New Moon" changed to the Fortune House, it looked like there were many good changes: new decor and some new menu items. But a recent visit was disappointing: walls by my booth were dirty, the black and white photos of old China now have frames that are falling down, and items ordered no longer seemed as tasty. The always-included egg drop soup tasted bad - like a prepackaged soup mix with bright yellow color, not a homemade broth with subtle flavors. Vegetable soup had a good variety of veggies, but again, though the above mentioned broth of the egg drop soup was not used, the vegetable soup broth seemed to be just a step above plain water - no umami flavor at all. Egg roll was passable as was crab rangoon. Main course dishes also were okay, but not exceptional. I'm afraid either the economy has affected choices the owners have decided to go with, or they have just lost interest in maintaining the quality of the menu and the interior (cleanliness and decor). read more
