    Stuffing
    Mary T.

I like grocery stores. It comes from grocery shopping with my mom as a kid. Sure, it's a part of life and is much needed. I always felt that they were cool places to spend time looking at a ton of products that make me curious and happy. I needed to get a bunch of items to make a Thanksgiving meal. During this pandemic, such special meals brought me grocery shopping at either Sobeys or Longo's. I know the layout of both my usual stores well. I wanted to change things up, though. Confession: I like supermarket shortcuts. We all should embrace them. One of mine is getting Stove Top stuffing and adding veggies to it. I was looking for a good price on stuffing that didn't force me to fight with the occasional crazy person at a major box store (starts with W and ends with -almart). I found it going for 99 cents at Fortinos. I do love Fortinos. Markham had one eons ago that was five minutes away from where I live. It left and I rarely go to any Fortinos. My closest ones are either in southern Scarborough (sounds exotic... lol) or Vaughan. On Saturday, I needed to pick up a couple of pre-orders in Mississauga. I remembered this Fortinos and decided to drop by on a soggy, rainy, gloomy day. This Fortinos is on my way home from work, which also feels like eons ago since I last went into the office. It's on Highway 27 in a vast plaza across from Woodbine Centre. I was more likely to hit the Winners nearby. There is a ton of parking. I found a parking spot fairly close to the entrance and exit. There is only one way to get in and out of the store during this pandemic, which is closer to Queens Plate Drive. I realized walking over to the entrance why I love Fortinos. It does little things to make your shopping experience more pleasant. There's a tunnel just before you hit the main doors that shields you from the elements. There's a huge banner indicating that healthcare workers get priority access, along with a nice thank-you message. I realize why I don't shop at Fortinos often, too. I can't get out of the store! I love seeing products that are new to me. I get completely excited about seeing gigantic meatballs that are ready to eat as a takeout meal, along with an amazing assortment of pizza slices. I wanted all of that, but had to stick with the shopping program. It's nicely organized in this supermarket. Wide lanes, Fresh produce. Clearly labelled sections and prices. I was so happy here! Who needs a happy pill when the high is natural... haha! During this pandemic, getting a whole turkey has been challenging in that you couldn't get a smaller one in weight. Well, it looks like things have changed. I managed to get an 11.5-pound one. So, instead of eating turkey leftovers for over a week, it's less than that now. Fortunately, I like leftovers, but it's nice to not shell out for a larger bird anymore. I found my stuffing. I grabbed a couple of boxes, as if I had won the jackpot. Prices at Fortinos tend to be on the pricier side, but they are fine if you get items that are on sale. There were perhaps three items that I got that weren't on sale, but the major items to make my meal were. I was happy. This supermarket is large. It has a similar feel to Zehrs in the Cambridge-Kitchener-Waterloo area, which I love. It's not overly large, but you do get a pharmacy and Joe Fresh. I could live here. I had a nice woman help cash me out. She and another woman bagged my groceries. It has been a while since I've seen a tag team bagging groceries. I have always defaulted to doing it myself. PC Optimum points are accepted here. I tapped using the barcode on my phone. I paid using a debit card. It was seamless. I wished both women a nice day. I then rolled my groceries over to my car. There was a man dedicated to sanitizing every single cart that was returned. I liked that. I passed by this grocery store yesterday, heading home from getting bagels and dairy-free cream cheese. Thank goodness it was closed for the holiday. Otherwise, I would have eaten my way through the market-style to-go meals. I will return because I have meatballs and pizza on my mind. It has an excellent assortment of organic, dairy-free, gluten-free, and more items to suit your dietary needs. I also loved the sugar-free candy section. (395)

The bakery was sooooo good. I like that they have different stalls for different hot foods as well as a coffee shop.

However, it always appears that we are under over-zealous scrutiny from security and staff each time we visit. We have no idea why...we spend a lot of money each time we shop and certainly don't act in a suspicious manner. Perhaps it's because we are a mixed-race couple, maybe dress too casually or are considered scruffy, too fat, too old, or a combination of biases? I understand a rise in the cost of grocery items correlates to a rise in shoplifting, but seriously, enough is enough already. We have experienced a plethora of odd incidents relating to staff following us, scrutiny from till operatives as we walk down each aisle and staff has literally breathed down our necks at the self-checkout, even when putting on my gloves after paying. Although we have joked about this problem, the realization that this does not happen elsewhere has clinched the decision to call it quits and not visit the store again. I believe it's better to have some self-respect and not allow retail employees to treat you in this manner... so Metro at 221 Lloyd Manor Rd, Etobicoke can go and do one...maybe hassle someone else with their "isms" for a change.

I needed to pick up a few grocery items, so dropping by Food World Supermarket afterwards was perfect. This building used to Rose Garden Banquet and Convention. I'm guessing that due to the pandemic, this business suffered and shut down. There is plenty of parking in front and around this supermarket. I backed into a spot and walked in. The doors automatically open, which is wonderful. This supermarket is located across from Burger King. I often frequent it when I crave a flame-broiled burger. Both are in the same plaza as Wok of Asia. It's clean and cheerful when you first walk in. You see cases of pop and sparking water. The produce section then greets you. I needed avocados and celery. Prices are either comparable to what you see at grocery stores like No Frills, but the quality is better. Both produce items that I grabbed were fresh and in great condition. This grocery store carries halal items. It features a lot of South Asian products, such as Parle-G and paratha. You also see ramen and Ribena, both of which made me love shopping at this store even more. I saw everything from custard to paneer. It does sell corned beef in cans and rose water in glass bottles. Cool! The meat section is impressive. It's huge with every cut of meat that you can possibly think of. You can get food to go. There's a stall within the supermarket where you can get pizza, shawarma, and more. I paid for my produce. The woman at the checkout was extremely pleasant and nice. I paid with my debit card. This store gives you a plastic bag. I thanked her and headed to the exit. Just before you exit, there's a stall that sells desserts, ice cream, drinks, and more. I asked the woman behind the counter whether their drinks have added sugar. They don't. The store goes with the natural sweetness of their fruit or veggies. I wanted to get the sugar cane and coconut hydrating beverage. She had run out of coconut, so I got a large sugar cane drink. As she made my drink, I looked at the desserts display. There were individual portions of chocolate mousse cake and sponge cakes. You can also get milkshakes, ice cream, and more. She asked whether I wanted ice in my sugar cane drink. I said as much as the cup could fit the ice. It was perfect on a hot day. I asked the nice woman how long this supermarket has been open for. It opened on May 18th. I paid with my debit card. Done! I thanked the woman and left with my groceries and drink. The sugarcane was indeed the real deal. It was naturally sweet and yummy. I was happy with my drink. It was nice consuming it as I drove home. Whenever I was in the area to grab some dinner, there was never a supermarket close by to get a few grocery items. It's definitely more convenient now thanks to this Food World. (174)

With the pc cooking school, you can get a complimentary meeting with the dietician and two follow up meetings. I never actually tried this, but it's a good offering. A snowstorm was forecast for the following day going into Christmas. I typically make Christmas dinner for my parents and me, so I moved it up a day and decided to get groceries on my way home. I had dinner in Etobicoke first. I then did a search to find the closest grocery store that would have stuffing and turkeys (not people, but the bird). I found this No Frills at The Albion Centre. I have been to this mall many times over the years, but never this store for groceries. It was a busy evening. There was construction down to a single lane along Albion Road. There were some impatient folks, but I managed to make a left turn and park near the No Frills. At first, my heart sank because to get a shopping cart, you needed a loonie to unlock it. Perhaps the stars were aligned that evening. I had a loonie with me and managed to get a cart. This No Frills is huge. It is my very first visit to one with a pharmacy. Sure enough, the pharmacy was open. It was cool checking it out as if it were an mirage. It's on the right side of the store when you enter the doors. The produce is fresh and lovely. It makes my local No Frills look shabby. I got all my veggies for my meal, including naturally imperfect carrots. A bag of them was $3. I'd sooner go with them than the organic ones that were going for double that price. I liked seeing individual-sized St. Hubert pies. I'm used to seeing a huge pie that feeds two people. It's nice knowing that individual portions exist. During the first year of the pandemic, you could only get huge turkeys. I had leftovers for weeks. It was refreshing to see four different weight categories for frozen turkeys. I went with a turkey that was roughly 4 kg. It was the smallest turkey that I have bought in years. I got stuck in the cereal aisle. The variety is impressive. I got a box of apple cinnamon Chex that I've never tried before. I also saw strawberry banana Cheerios for the first time. Despite being with shoppers who were also getting groceries before the snowstorm of doom was upon us, it was pleasant lining up to pay. Every single checkout lane was staffed and waiting didn't take long. Nice! I had the nicest woman help me cash out. I scanned my PC Optimum barcode from my phone and then paid with a debit card. I wished her a great evening and left. Once I placed my items in my car's trunk, I returned my cart to get my loonie. It felt old-school to me, except that the quarter that carts used to except has been upgraded to a loonie. Christmas Eve lunch turned out nicely, thanks to getting everything I needed for my meal here. I had a great experience at this store. I wish that my local No Frills was this great and inviting. It could learn a lot from this store, from providing fresh produce, to having friendly staff. (3)

The hand cream that she was using wasn't healing a thing. I found one brand that seemed promising while doing some research online. The site said that it was available at this particular Shoppers Drug Mart. The store was conveniently on my way home from work. Then again, I cut across most of the GTA, so I pass by a ton of stores! This store is in a plaza. There seemed to be a Food Basics or some green-painted grocery store that has closed down. Shoppers Drug Mart is in the corner further down. The parking area can be a bit chaotic. It's an older plaza and the lanes are more narrow than what I'm used to in suburbia. This store has been here for a while. It has everything that you'd expect it to have, including a grocery aisle. I walked every aisle and could not find the hand cream that I was looking for, which was disappointing. However, there was a Gold Bond one that was on sale. It has been approved by the Canadian Diabetes Society. It has proven results. It was also on sale. I bought it! I dropped the cream off at my parents' place. My mom said that she would try the hand cream out immediately. This morning, I spoke to my mom. She said that three hours later, she noticed a huge difference. She no longer has cracked hands. Nice! She asked me whether she could pay me back. Hearing her say that this product works is all that I wanted. The lone cashier at this store was friendly and made sure that each customer was okay. She helped out a senior ahead of me. I liked the care that she showed and the help that she gave. I'd come back here again when I'm in the area. (157)
