Appetizers: Calamari steaks Escargots They served very ample and fresh spinach salad, Caesar salad or house salad. Soup of the day was a chicken tomato pesto soup. Thick and hearty. Dinner entrees were: lamb and lobster, Teriyaki steak and shrimp and teriyaki steak and lobster. If you go as a couple, you could share a main entree. That's only my opinion. We would go back again.

I ordered the black truffle risotto with lobster tail (an up charge $$). My boyfriend loved the French Laundry main, he devoured the tomahawk and sides. The lobster tail really made the risotto so much tastier, it was a whole flavor bomb. Usually I'm not one to eat truffle, but this was amazing! To finish off our meal, we ended with a tiramisu dessert. It was presented so nicely sealing my boyfriend's birthday celebration to a wonderful close. The bartender also provided a dessert pairing with a high end whiskey from what I recall. I only wish I got a bigger portion! Their famous prime rib was incredibly tender and gigantic. The reason for the mediocre rating is this. As others have mentioned there's a horrible mildew smell throughout the whole restaurant! That has to be a health code violation. Reviews have mentioned this issue for years. I think the whole place needs to be renovated to better stand up to the rain and humidity. Because half the restaurant is open to the elements. An expensive fix, but with how famous they are, and the higher menu prices, it should be doable. I worry for their employees being exposed to mildew every shift. That causes health issues, and the restaurant is responsible for their staff getting sick because they're working in an unsafe environment. I really hate that this ongoing issue hasn't been fixed and their staff and customers are exposed to a health hazard. Smacks of mismanagement and/or greed and lack of concern. To their employees, you are owed compensation if this mildew gets you sick! Contact lawyers that work pro bono (free as a community service and tax write off) if the restaurant won't take responsibility.

The ordering counter and cashier is right as you enter along with thr pastry counter. Same deals with thr kapolei location you order and find your own table and put number so they can find you when your order is up. Inside is airconditioned with around maybe 10 tables and chairs some seat 2 others eat 4 and they also have outside patio seating back and front. The parking can be challenging having maybe 10 -12 spots in their lot and some street parking . Their Menu is a bit more limited than their other location. Sandwiches.. pizza and other stuff oh and coffee. The only thing that wasmt as good as their kapolei location was they didnt have the thin crispy salty cravable fries they only had small bags of chips available The food is always good and the service was real good. The staff gave you an impression where they really valued their customers with greetings with a smile and happy goodbyes. Both were absolutely delicious and definitely worth ordering again. The atmosphere is one of my favorite parts. It has a relaxed, coastal vibe that makes you feel like you're dining at a beachfront café, even if you're not right on the sand. Overall, it's a great spot for good food, a laid-back environment, and friendly service. I'll definitely keep coming back.

Was not impressed by the service here. The restaurant itself is nice, gives the impression of being a high-end place. The food wasn't that great. I've definitely had better. If you're gonna call your place an italian word (Formaggio = cheese), I'm gonna assume your cuisine is going to be equally authentic. Not so. The mozzarella & tomato salad (Caprese) I got was horrible, cheese wasn't even real buffalo mozzarella, it was some hard rubbery crap, prob. from Safeway. AND they don't even give you bread! Go to any restaurant IN Italy, and if there isn't already bread/bread sticks on the table, for sure, some will be brought out to you. FOR FREE. My mother-in-law who happened to be with me, complained about this, and the manager on duty was asked to come out. Not by us mind you. The waitress wasn't in the mood, it seemed, so she just went to go get the manager. He came out, about 20 min. later, with a roll, saying it was "on the house". Well, please & thank you. It should be on the house regardless! At this point I was highly irritated, because the manager didn't even bother to ask or stick around long enough for us to explain our grievance, he just thought a piece of bread would suffice. Well just out of spite, I didn't eat the damn bread. And decided when I left there, I was gonna tell everyone I know, to NEVER go to the Formaggio's in Kailua. Horrible, horrible, horrible. Also my son's hamburger was super salty, and there was nothing "panini" about my mother-in-law's panini. Someone (the cook, refuse to call him a chef) needs to go to Italy for awhile, so he can learn how to cook properly. read more

Short version: DO NOT GO. Allow me to expend: First off, the reason we went to this place was because we where invited to see someone play on a Saturday night. *Unless all you wanna do is drink wine, then you might like this place. I definitively would not recommend anyone to go eat there. The food is way overpriced and really really really mediocre. I got the Lobster Bisque ($12 for a small plate a little stip) all I tasted was salt, like it came out of a can. I sent it back and I refused to get anything else. I didn't want to risk extra "DNA" in my order because I sent it back. I had also an order of French Fries, not even fresh but the frozen kind...Oh and ($8) Really? My hubby got the overcooked garlic ahi tuna laying on a bed of linguini ($27) it was not even good all they put on the top was just soy sauce. No flavor whatsoever. Our friend got the overcooked salmon ($29) with little bit of salad. Basically they try to pass themselves as a "gourmet restaurant" but trust me. It isn't...It's way overpriced. It actually reminded me of IKEA food cafeteria. Bland and utilitarian The service was ok the waitress was pleasant. But that's about it The restroom where dirty the trash was overfull, toilet paper missing on one roll. Water on the floor...And pieces of toilet paper everywhere. Really not a good experience....I resented having to fork out $40 for this. Bottom line?? Make a point to miss this place. read more

We are local Kailua residents. We ordered a few drinks and 2 appetizers. The bruschetta and the ribeye ordered cooked medium. Drinks were promptly delivers and The Bruschetta arrived quickly. The experience went from disappointing to horrific when the ribeye was delivered It was on a sizzling plate and smelled great. But the end piece was pulled and it was immediately apparent that it was seared RARE. We checked the other the other end and 1/2 the pieces and it was blue rare cold in the middle. And we set it on the end of the table for return to kitchen. Took about 15 minutes for service to pick up the steak that we just asked to be comped since we had been there too long for drinks and pupus. We were seated right by the kitchen and heard the cooks argue that the steak was fine and "cooked to order". Then we watched as the servers were Told to take the plate directly from the passway and deliver it to another table and serve it. We were disgusted to see a plate that had hit a table, been pulled apart by used chopsticks to see that it was indeed not cooked properly and then served to another table. I hope ownership removes the cooking and management staff that was on shift tonight. We will NEVER receive food from this establishment again. read more

This place needs new management. The supposed owner - wanna be surfer fat dude was very rude telling me 'it's not that cold', after I politely asked him if he could please reheat my plate of pasta. Seeming offended, he proceeded to the bar to order a beer for himself and was buying shots for some sleazy girls. Class act top service. There's many better options in Kailua, like the Grove. I'd recommend a new venue for all artists who think this place is a hip place to perform a gig, sadly when the management is as shitty as the food - I give a big double thumbs down. This place gives Kailua a bad name, rich food that is full of fat and doesn't sit well in your stomach the next day. I feel bad for the wait staff to have to deal with an assh___ like that. I write few reviews, and only when I feel I have several substantive comments to make. Service was fine, no wait on a weeknight. Had been avoiding Formaggio because I thought it looked "too polished"; turns out it's a little rundown on the inside. Not that I don't enjoy hole-in-the-wall places, but Formaggio doesn't present itself as one. Had a terrible maitai... which I ordered only because they had no madeira... at a wine bar. Waitress couldn't describe to me the volume of the soups served in any intelligible way: "It's kinda, well, you know, about... well, I don't think it'd fill you up." Well then, no lobster bisque for $11.50. Lamb tacos were uninteresting. Sorry, Formaggio, just can't rave about you like others do. read more

On the windward side of Oahu in Kailua on 305 Hahani Street. Nice, attractive and upscale place. Small in scale but charming. Very attentive staff and bar service. Wine selection is quite good and very fair considering the surroundings. Great seafood, steaks and prime rib. Nice servings very fair prices. Atmosphere is a bit sedate compared to what you might find in Honolulu and Waikiki which can be a nice change. Highly recommended by my Yelp friends and local friends as well. Oh, the marvelous time we had for wife Leslie's birthday Sunday at Formaggio in Kailua. Manager Jacob and Host Holly were top notch, even when I informed them (at the last minute) that our party had grown by two and there were food allergies. The Dining in the Dark food and wine pairings were amazing, conversation lively, and all ten of us were amazed at the chef's skill and the tastes he produced, and at Holly's wine pairings. Blindfolds were not a problem: we each adapted and found all our utensils, food and drinks, with no spillage. My strongest recommendation fora great and unique dining experience on Oahu. read more

From the ever evolving food menu to the constantly changing wine list, I've gone to eat at Formaggio's about four times since it's openning and have been pleasantly surprised by the changes they make every time I come back...it's not a stagnant restaurant. Friendly staff and a laid back atmosphere (I've gone in slippers and shorts) make this a great Kailua destination. The happy hour comes up a little short and there's no tap beer but they do have a full bar, not everything can be perfect i guess. read more

The main courses were all good, but the appetizers were disappointing. The service was mediocre despite the staff being friendly. Our appetizers were forgotten, and the service was slow. I might consider returning for the main courses, but not for a special occasion. I didn't care for the free desserts because of the forgotten appetizers. I also felt there was no sincere apology or follow-up by the manager. Considering the price, I expected better attention to detail in the service. read more

Went here last week for the first time. I had the Kobe Panini with Truffle Oil fries, that was awesome. My friend had the pancetta pesto pizza, it's like a pizza with a caesar salad with bay shrimp on top of the pizza. You've got to try it. The wine I had was great, Paolo Scavino Nebiolo 01. The only problem with this place is that they don't take reservations, but I'll live with that, they served us drinks outside. read more

I've been coming to this restaurant since it first opened in 2008. The chief special of the day is always mouth watering, and the Caprese salad with aged balsamic Vinaigrette is to die for. I used to come here more often with my hubby but since management/ownership changed the service is not the same and that's why the 4 stars. Plus the garlic chunks mixed with linguine pasta and olio sauce is pure perfection. I'd come back over and over and over to get this dish again and again and again. Be sure to add a lot of parmesan cheese when the offer heehee. My parents and grandma got the veal linguine, veal on sauteed vegetables, and crab cakes which were crispy on the outside but soft and flavorful on the inside and the sauce paired super well with it. The veal dishes were solid too but nothing compared to my garlic olio chicken dish. It's a nice atmosphere that fits a nice dinner out vibe. Perfect for anniversaries, family dinner celebrations, or even if friends want to dress up and eat out. Service was great too. Definitely would come back and would recommend to friends. 5 stars!

I have to admit I'm not a big Thai food person but everything was flavorful and fresh. My dish was $20 plus the extra $6 for the chicken. Definitely will come back. The ambience was ok considering the rush they had to do to open the restaurant.

The "standard" prefixe includes a choice of two salads , a sampler plate with 3 appetizers, and your choice of main entrée. I chose the Caesar salad and the miso butterfish, along with the optional wine pairing. Ice had most of the items before, separately, but the butterfish was a slightly different preparation. The fish was excellently prepared, but I found the accompaniments a bit strange. The texture of the soba noodles and the flavor of the lomi tomatoes conflicted with the savory taste of the fish, for my taste. Maybe I'm just too "traditional", but I would have preferred plain white rice rather than the noodles, and more "tsukemono", over the tomatoes. Overall, a good dinner, but just not my favorite. I also tried (on a different night), the pan seated Mekajiki (swordfish) dish, that was on a previous prefixe menu. The portion of fish was huge, large and thick. I was concerned about the internal cook, but it was prepared perfectly. It was not dry, but moist, even for such a thick piece, and the flavor was great. It came with a That style yellow curry, which I found lacked both sweetness and heat. Instead of the usual kaffir line leaves, there were slices of lime in the sauce, which also seemed to lack the traditional coconut milk sweetness. Not bad, just not great. Still, the food was good, and the service, was excellent, as usual.

We had a date night and decided to try goen for the first time even though we've lived in Kailua for decades. But it was a weeknight, I know how Kailua town can get crazy in the weekends. MENU- The menu was small but we could still feel our choices wavering between a few. We received edamame as our amuse Bouche. The regular Roy's restaurans have the same but it's just lightly salted. This one had salt, shoyu, sesame oil and maybe oyster sauce? It was salty so we both ate 1 and left the rest (which is unusual for me since I love edamame) FOOD- We ordered the aburi hamachi roll and fry basket (fried portobello mushrooms-didn't taste any other type of mushroom). The fry basket was good and filling and the sushi was ok EXCEPT I found a huge fish bone in mine. Boohoo Husband ordered the short ribs with polenta and veggies. I ordered the Marsala chicken with tagliatelle. I took 1 bite of my chicken and it was so SALTY that I could feel my tongue getting swollen. The tagliatelle wasn't equally salty but it was still over seasoned so I finished most of that. My husbands dish was also wayyy over seasoned? The vegetables and polenta were just as salty as my chicken that both of us finished 1/4 of our dish. Sad, we were looking forward to our date night SERVICE- Service definitely isn't close to a Roy's restaurant. When I told the server that our dishes were salty, she asked if I wanted it remade. I told her no then she just sort of disappeared. Good thing there is a water carafe at the table. The manager came around after we were done eating and we told him the same thing about the salt. He also offered to have it remade and apologized. For date nights, we're usually a pupu, entree, drinks & dessert kind of couple but for this trip, we didn't even want to chance dessert. Manager took off the sushi & our entrees off the bill so thank you for that. But Roy needs to visit this restaurant again. With his name on it, he needs to retrain staff. Front and back house.

They use local ingredients (read their bio!) and they make you feel like you're a regular every time you walk through the door. They have a great variety of burrito, taco, and bowl (salad) fillings (and other stuff too). AND a full bar to get that margarita or Modelo! There's a parking lot behind the building and a door back there to scoot in through the bar. The place is usually pretty busy, always a little line to order, but they're fast and ready to roll as soon as it's your turn. Definitely try these guys out if you haven't already. If you like Jalapenos or Panilos (or Chipotle on mainland) you're going to LOVE this place! SUPPORT LOCAL!!!
