Wow, the afternoon tea here is just wonderful and so beautiful! They do serve it in the main café so you are eating amongst regular brunchers and it can get a little noisy, but I really appreciate they put down a white tablecloth and set out the afternoon tea in the most beautiful manner and was beyond expectations. The service was very attentive in particular given this is normally a fast casual café. Afternoon tea came with a selection of their open face sandwiches, pastries, and lots of fruit. It appears the tea is not included in the cost of the food tower as we were charged $10 per pot on top of the cost of the tea towers, which was ~$90-100 each but there was plenty of food included. It's a bit confusing that afternoon tea does not include tea and the original server had said it was included but a different server charged for the tea. No big deal as the jasmine tea was quite good but it was confusing. I will definitely return and bring other girlfriends as I thought. The food was quite good, good portions, and good value for the Bay Area. While the ambience is not tearoom, cute, there is no time limitations you can hang out with your girlfriends as long as you would like, so that really was wonderful. Check out the pictures to see how pretty the food and tea settings were! I was really impressed.

Solid brunch spot! Your order at the counter then find your own table where they'll bring you your food. There's plenty of indoor and outdoor seating and nice ambiance. The coffee drinks and food are arranged. Will try the croffle next time!

I've been doing a bit of research of this cafe and it looks really nice. So I decided to come by here and it was very hectic. I didn't expect this restaurant to be almost full especially when it's a cafe. It can be too loud for me to study and work here despite having WiFi. I didn't really feel like eating too much because of yesterday. So I decided to get one of the pastries as well as a cappuccino. Almost most of them look too sweet and I decided to get the Ube Puff since it's between the sweet and savory side. They did put a lot of Ube cream which made me surprised. Also the cappuccino is like any cappuccino I had from most restaurants. Hopefully, it's less crowded and I probably will get one of the sandwiches or other larger items the next time I return here.

Veggie Scramble, French Omlette

Had a great brunch here! We ordered the French Omlette and Veggie Scramble (no pesto sauce & onion), and both were really good. The food came out quickly, and the service was friendly and efficient. It's a nice spot for a quick and satisfying brunch. Highly recommend!

We were up in the Bay Area last month for our Adored Grandson's birthday. As we have other family up in the Bay, and we don't get to be up there as often as we like, we let some of our closest family members on both my husband's side and mine know that we would be in town to celebrate AG's special day. We kicked around options for a brunch place with a varied menu that was centrally located. Foreigner checked off many boxes for us. We had almost 20 of us gathering from SoCal, Sonoma County, Crockett, San Jose, and Daly City. We hovered outside just before they got super busy and were able to score several adjacent tables so that we mostly were able to sit together. The inside dining room was full, so dining al fresco was how we managed. The fast casual approach of standing in line to order and pay, then get a pager to take to your table worked out fine. I loved my food, although I was busy talking and getting everyone situated as Dear Hubby and I were hosting the brunch, and my eggs got cold. Still, everything I had was delicious. By noon on a Sunday the line was out to the door to order, and tables were hard to come by. This seems to be very popular with the local crowd. I got to enjoy one of their crepe dishes, which was packed with delectable fillings. I would like to return whenever we get back that way again. It would be nice to get that crew back together again, but also good to be with a smaller group to more easily visit over good food, freshly prepared. The lattes were stellar, too. Very glad we found ourselves at Foreigner for our family mini-reunion!

Cuban Cortadito

I came here for breakfast, and it was great! The location is very nice, and the seats and tables are stylish and comfortable. I got the smoked salmon Benedict, and enjoyed it immensely. The eggs were perfectly poached, the Hollandaise was tasty (but not overwhelming), and the biscuits they come in were really tasty. I also appreciated the lightly dressed salad that came as a side: the greens were very fresh. I also got the Cuban Cortadito, and I was pumped to have a non-dairy coffee drink. It was very well made: the slight hint of condensed milk was a nice touch. It was a nice sweet drink without being cloyingly sweet. But they have so many tasty coffee drinks that it was hard to choose, so I'll def be back to try more of them!

Dolce barako
Tina L.

A variety of brunch items and pastries from quiches to muffins. I tried the Dolce Barako - really liked the sprinkled Himalayan salt, which enhanced the coffee flavors. They have outlets. It's a great place to sit down and catch up and I love how it's precentral in downtown San Mateo. You would need to park in a parking structure, which is around a dollar an hour. There are also parking meters nearby.

My friend and I came here last Saturday at around 11:30am. Despite the rain and wet streets that day, the restaurant was busy and lively. We ordered our food and drinks first at the register and then they gave us a buzzer, which we took to a table of our choice. The restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating, and fortunately, we were able to find a table inside. I ordered the Foreigner Favorite and an iced Yema Latte. My friend ordered the Veggie Scramble and an iced Euro Latte. We both requested less sweet for our drinks. This turned out good for the Euro Latte but I had to go back and ask them to increase the sweetness for the Yema Latte. The drinks were good, nothing too mind-blowing. The Foreigner Favorite was yummy. I really liked the sausages and poached eggs. I love potatoes, and I wish these were a little bit crispier. Regardless, it was an enjoyable dish overall. It was also very filling, and I ended up taking leftovers home.

Orange blossom latte

I came here with a friend for lunch on a weekday. Beware you do have to pay for parking. I paid $2 for 1.5 hours so nothing too crazy. I ordered the morning breakfast croissant. It comes with ham and a fried egg. Super delicious and filling. I was undecided on coffee and one of the employees recommended I try the orange blossom latte. I asked for it iced. It was good but it just tasted like a regular latte. I really couldn't taste any orange or citrus flavor? I wonder if I mistakenly was given a regular latte. My friend tried it too and agreed there was no orange blossom flavor. She ordered the avocado egg toast and an orange juice. It comes with a side salad too. I've had the toast before and I remember it being okay. Like good but nothing super special. The orange juice was fresh squeezed! There's lots of indoor seating. After ordering, they bring your food/drinks to your table. In total, I paid $25.90 including tip. I'd give Foreigner Cafe 3.5 stars, so rounding up to 4.

Back for round two, and this spot is officially a keeper! Finding a place that can comfortably accommodate a party of five for a late breakfast without feeling rushed or cramped is a total win. The atmosphere was perfectly laid back--exactly the kind of "relaxed morning" vibe you want when you're looking to catch up over coffee. From a foodie perspective, the kitchen is clearly firing on all cylinders. Every dish that hit our table was a 10/10 on presentation; the plating was thoughtful and vibrant. But it wasn't just "eye candy"--the flavors were balanced and fresh. It's rare to find a place that nails both the aesthetic and the palate so consistently. If you're looking for a reliable, high-quality breakfast spot that actually feels like an experience, I'd definitely recommend giving this place a try. I'll be back for a third visit for sure!

James H.

First time at Foreigner and really liked this cafe/restaurant. Order at the counter and get a buzzer to put on your table or wait for your take out order. Plenty of seating inside and huge projector screen. Prices are a bit high for a morning breakfast croissant at $15.90 but it was solid. The hot chocolate is made with tcho chocolate so it is kind of bitter not sweet. I'll be back to try other menu items. Street parking only.

Croque Madam
Jacqueline Z.

Decent place for brunch in downtown San Mateo! Came here on a weekend with a friend. You order at the counter and they will bring it to your table. Plenty of space available despite it being a Sunday. I decided to get the Euro Latte and the Croque Madam. I expected a bit more "wow" flavor to the Euro Latte but perhaps I got my hopes up. I felt like it lacked the Irish cream flavor. The Croque Madam was solid, with a nice runny egg yolk. I did think the ham was a bit lacking, especially along the edges. Side of potatoes were the right crispy.

Avocado Egg Toast
Chris K.

I'd been hearing good things about Foreigner in San Mateo and finally stopped by to check it out. The inside has plenty of seating and offered some cozy vibes. We ordered the avocado egg toast and the burrata ham quiche, both served with a simple side salad. The avocado toast was fresh and well balanced, and the quiche was rich and flavorful with the burrata adding a nice creamy touch. Overall, a solid spot for a casual brunch.

Ask the Community - Foreigner Cafe

I can't seem to reserve a table? I tried to do it from the official website which brought me to Yelp but there is no reservation button here? also tried to call and left messages but never got a return call. Any help will be appreciated? :D

Not sure if they take resos as I've we've never had to - we go there pretty often. The space is pretty big so you might be able to just walk in unless you have a particularly big party

Does Foreigner have outlets for charging laptops?

There are some areas near outlets.

How much is the corkage fee?

the price charged to guests who choose to bring their own bottle of wine to a restaurant.

Is this restaurant women owned?

Yes

Are there bottomless mimosas offered at brunch?

No, I don't think so. I ordered by the glass last time I went and bottomless mimosas aren't offered on their brunch menu.

May I know what days do you serve the Merienda Menu? Thanks!

According to their instagram, they serve the Merienda menu Monday-Sunday from 2:30pm-5pm! You can make reservations on their website for that.

Are you pet friendly?

They have an outdoor patio, so I assume you can dine with your pet leashed outdoors. Perhaps call the establishment for assurance.

Do the still serve Latte Flights? I didn't see it on the menu.

They do!

Is this a good place for big groups? Like a group of 8?

Yes

Do you sell your quiches?

Yes, we do sell quiche. We have spinach and mushroom, ham burrata and truffle , bacon and cheddar, and the Mozzarella basil goat cheese. If you have questions how to order. Please feel free to call us at 6506201888.…

How busy are Sundays for brunch? Is it hard to get seated?

I didn't have any trouble getting seated, you won't either

Is this a good spot to get some work done?

Yes, there are plenty of small corners to sip coffee, free WiFi and get some work done.

Is this place baby friendly ? Diaper changing table and high chair, available?

I have seen wooden high chairs, the bathroom is located outdoors in the hall shared with other companies and I have never used it so I am not sure about the bathrooms being kid friendly

Just curious, is the owner Hungarian? The Hungarian foods on the menu are yummy!

Yes. The guy who built the menu is Hungarian.

Is it still open for outdoor dining?

Yes, they have tables outside!

Can I bring my dog?

Not inside

Are they opened during COVID-19 for take out?

Yes. Go to their website to order online for takeout. The website ordering process is pretty straightforward and simple.

Is it a good study spot?

No. Space is very limited and lots of people were looking for seats to eat their food. Taking up a spot for hours to study would be kind of a dick move.

Do you by any chance have any gluten free and dairy free pastries?

Yes!

Are there gluten free options for bread/pastries?

Yes for pastries, not sure about bread

My Italian ham Benedict had perfectly poached eggs with the prosciutto edges crisped that added great texture to the overall Benedict. My kid said the lemon/berry pancakes rivaled her favorite pancakes around the corner at Whisper - with the pancake being actually better than the others: fluffy insides with a tiny "crisp" to the outsides of the pancake. My youngest was so excited about the banana, hazelnut, Nutella pizza that she picked off half the toppings before I could snap a pic. And the breakfast burrito looked like any other good breakfast burrito - but the flavor mix was really tasty with the right amount of spice/kick! The train was coming every 20 minutes or so, and it was very loud. Nice char on the crust, and not super doughy. For our Margherita Pizza specifically, it was a bit soggy/ floppy making it really hard to grab and eat. Other than that, the flavor was there. Might have been a one time thing, but would recommend getting this well done just in case. Of the 3 we ordered, the Beef Back Rib Pizza was my favorite! Great combination of flavors that complemented each other. Mashed Potatoes: A little too dry for my liking. Would recommend adding some black pepper to it. Mac and Cheese: Definitely hit the spot! It was nice and creamy, would definitely order it again! Jalapeno Cornbread: An interesting combination that just wasn't for me. If I come back, I may try it again to see if it grows on me. It was also on the drier side. Arugula Salad: There was A LOT of Parmesan cheese in the salad. I like parmesan, but this was pretty overwhelming. Lemony Garlic Linguine with Prawns: One of the best sides that we got. Noodles had a good chew to them, with a nice zest from the lemons. Very flavorful!

Everyone at the table loved it. For drinks, we had the Blood Orange Drop and the Passion Storm. Both were really good, and I especially loved the Passion Storm. The crab cake was probably the only miss for us. It wasn't terrible, but it just wasn't memorable enough for me to order again. Everything else was a hit: lamb shank, seafood linguini, seafood risotto, and cioppino. The portions were generous, and everyone enjoyed their meal so much that pretty much every plate was nearly cleaned. Even after all that food, the kiddos still had room for a sticky toffee pudding, which they also finished. For five people, the bill was a little over $300 before tip, coming in just under $400 with tip. For Broadway and the quality of the food and service, I thought that was pretty reasonable. I don't know what they're doing to this thing back there, but it was quite possibly the best pork chop I've ever had. At minimum, it's the best one I can remember, and frankly that's the only version of me qualified to write this review. Perfectly cooked, ridiculous flavor, and one of those meals where halfway through you stop watching the game and start paying attention to what you're eating. I came in for football and somehow ended up having a private moment with a pork chop. The bartender was great--friendly, attentive, but also understood the sacred relationship between a man, his dinner, and a television showing college football. The atmosphere was equally good. Relaxed, comfortable, upscale without making you feel like you need to know what fork to use. Meanwhile, behind me were two real estate guys splitting a bottle of wine that looked expensive enough that I briefly considered asking if interest rates had dropped. They ordered a couple of chicken dishes that also looked incredible. I didn't try them because apparently society still has rules about reaching over and eating food off a stranger's plate, even when you've been staring at it for several minutes. That's probably my only regret. I came in looking for a quick meal and ended up finding a place I'll absolutely come back to. Great atmosphere, excellent bartender, and a pork chop good enough that I'm now suspicious of every pork chop I've eaten before it. Definitely found my new watering hole after moving to the area.

It looks like a house and the restaurant is separated into 3 rooms. I love the first room to the right with the fireplace. Very intimate and cozy! When we went, one of the larger groups in another room was a bit rowdier, and it definitely did not match the vibes. Although that's not the restaurant's fault, I did feel much more at ease once that party packed up and left. Service was great! Our servers changed mid-meal, and although our first one was fine, we thought the second one was more personable. They graciously packed up any dishes I was unable to finish (eyes bigger than my stomach) and the wine pours got more generous as the night progressed. Maybe they noticed me stealing sips? The food was also really good. I really enjoyed the sunchoke tikka and salmon courses, as well as their version of a miso soup. The portions are also quite large, hence me being unable to finish 5 courses. I will definitely have to come back in the future once the menu changes. There's also something to accommodate all dietary restrictions! I'm glad they're not closing down or moving locations anymore. Overhead the owner stating they are planning to stay put for the time being, yay!
