First off, I have been searching for a Gyro in Oakland - and was looking forward to trying Forbes Gyro. This place was just bad. I saw the man working there take the lamb meat from a tin pan and put it under a spinning plate heater. I asked if he could please cut fresh lamb off the spit and he said this was fresh and how he makes it. I trusted him - this was not fresh. The meat was so dry it was hard to swallow and had no flavor - I had taken the sandwich to go or I would have just returned it. I even had a hard time finding the Gyro sandwich on the menu- that should have been a warning. Easy to find hamburgers- maybe they should just change the name to Forbes Hamburgers. This Gyro was "hell" no, never again. The wall mural was uninviting, the atmosphere unfriendly, the Gyro sauce was not good and the pita was not fresh. to top it off I asked the guy to make it fresh and he refused. I want my money back. I paid $8.99 for a total worthless sandwich that was not fit for anyone to eat. Students, faculty, bar hopppers, hospital workers and patients beware, I learned the hard way by trying and should not have tried this place- take my advise and pass on this terrible takeout restaurant. read more

I've walked past Forbes Gyro many times and never stopped in, but last night I was looking for something quick, easy, and available on uber eats. So that was Forbes Gyro. All in all? It was okay. The chicken gyros were okay -- the meat was almost cubed, which I found a bit strange for a gyro. Tasted fine, but it wasn't anything to write home about. The grape leaves were also fine. Th baklava was fine, but not very crispy. Definitely recommend Ali Baba over on Craig St for grape leaves and Mike and Tony's in the Southside for Gyros. But Forbes Gyro is a perfectly okay place to get dinner in a pinch. read more

My friend and I ordered pickup from here since we are still on a stay at home order. Overall we had a decent experience - not the worst but not the best. Food - Don't get me wrong, the Gyro I had was amazing!!! I can't say the same for the fries.. Honestly I tried one and didn't eat any more because they were bland. The food at Forbes Gyro has drastically improved since opening a few months ago. I ordered a doner plate with a spinach pinwheel pastry. The doner was more flavorful and had a nice crisp texture. The rice had bits of a small brown ingredient which made the rice very tasteful too. I was unable to identify it, but my friend suspected it was a type of nut. The pastry was good too! My colleagues and I had the immense privilege of visiting a hot local spot tonight: Forbes Gyro. Upon entering, I already knew we were in for a special treat. The décor inside was simple, but it was clear the restaurant was kept clean. The seating arrangements were aged like fine wine, and it was evident that they had been used often, indicating the location's popularity. We were greeted with a beaming smile from the location's proud owner, Jacob. He gleefully took our orders, and was quick to offer his pen when mine ran out of ink. That's just the kind of guy Jacob is. You know when you eat at Forbes Gyro that you're getting that famous Oakland hospitality that attracts students from all over the world. One issue that arose amongst my associates was the notable absence of individual slices of pizza on the menu, but you know what they say: never order pizza in a gyro place. Either way, the menu was somewhat unclear, and even lead to some confusion amongst the group as to what was offered. I ended up opting for the classic lamb gyro, which arrived in a timely manner. My gyro was wrapped in a soft warm pita, and was filled with the delectable combination of juicy lamb, fresh lettuce, sliced tomatoes, and just a pinch of onions. Drizzled throughout the gyro was what one can only assume to be homemade tzatziki sauce. The lamb was tender and well-seasoned. I was enjoying my experience until I opted to sample my colleague's fries. Much to my chagrin, the fries were rather bland as initially served. When paired with the authentic Greek salt offered at each table, the quality of the side dish improved significantly. All-in-all, Forbes Gyro was an unforgettable experience. My 45-minute expedition to the land of the Mediterranean ended abruptly when I stepped back out onto the mean streets of Oakland. I'm on a gyro kick right now and while in the area decided to stop by. The girl at the counter was friendly but communication was a bit of an issue. She asked me 4x to confirm that all I wanted was a gyro on pita. The gyro itself was ok and It was served piping hot. I do have a couple complaints though. The lettuce and tomato weren't the freshest. Also the tzatziki sauce just didn't hold up to the rest of the gyro. It just wasn't as creamy as I would have liked. My wife and I tried this place for the first time while visiting the museum. We got the regular gyro, the kofte wrap but on pita with gyro sauce and the lamb Adana wrap also on pita with gyro sauce. I have to say that was the best tasting food I've had in a long while. Now as a big guy I try a lot of places but this was so good I'll be making trips just to get some. Good place to grab a gyro if your in the mood for a decent gyro, has a full menu that offers pizza and Turkish dishes. The place is right on Forbes so parking will be terrible but if your in the area and want a gyro in Oakland this place is a viable option. read more

Pros: delicious gyros, pizza, fries, ice cream and more! If you're not terribly adventurous the only thing I'd suggest is staying away from the Turkish pizza, but I've never tried it. I've heard it's good! You can call in an order or use GrubHub for delivery too. They're very quick. Fries are crispy, but they sometimes don't have enough salt. Ice cream is fantastic if you're there and want something delicious and refreshing. Nice and cool inside during the summer and warm and cozy in the winter. Cons: communication is a little difficult since some of the cashiers don't speak English as their first language. If you want to modify an order, clearly describe it. They sometimes forget to modify it. It's not the cheapest place to eat for broke college students, but if you go every so often it's not breaking the bank. A gyro runs for 7.49 for a wrap, but it's pretty huge. read more

I've had food delivered from here using Grubhub and thought that the food was pretty decent! Just based on the food - I would give it a 3-star. However, the most recent time I stopped by the store in-person, I tried their raspberry ice cream in a sugar cone and it was DELICIOUS! It was only $2.13 and they are pretty generous with the portion! I am a big fan of Dave and Andy's across the street but in terms of affordability and flavor, I will probably find myself coming here more often for ice cream. They also accept credit/debit cards here which makes it more convenient.
