There was a space for authors to come in and do signings. I met some authors, talked with them, and even helped with a little social media. The clothing they had, including items from Africa, was very well presented. When I walked in, the staff greeted me right away. Someone asked if I was there for the book signing. I did not even know about it, but I went over, met the authors, and had a great conversation. Afro City was warm, welcoming, and full of culture and creativity. In a mall that feels empty in some spots, this place felt alive. Afro City Marketplace gets a full 5 stars from me.

When you walk down the center, there are only a few places open on the bottom and a few on the top. At least the places that are still open are closer together, but the emptiness is hard to miss. TJ Maxx feels like the only real anchor on one side. There is also Southern Girl Desserts and a few other shops, but you can really feel what is missing. There are no major anchor tenants anymore. Walmart has been gone for a long time. Sears is gone. It feels barren. It reminded me of a hair salon that only sees people by appointment, with no walk in traffic. There were almost no people just strolling the mall like in years past. Afro City Marketplace and Ninas and some of the other African American businesses were nice and doing their best. The problem is not with them. The mall itself just feels empty and struggling. Because of that, I have to give Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza 3 stars. It is okay, but very difficult to see it like this.

I went back for the Pan-African Film Festival (PAFF) arts and crafts to get a birthday gift for my wife. What used to be filled with vendors and patrons for the African Artist. The festival was a quarter of its heyday. I found a unique gift for my wife, and then I got a gift for myself at the gentleman's Fashion habadaserie, created by James Blumfield. I always wanted a suit from this designer. I finally got a few of his creations. Talking directly to the designer about my plans for the garments helped me get a deal that I couldn't pass up. My pieces are made of superior marerial making my investment of great value. Afro City is still there, providing access to creators and their craft. According to Tyrone Duprie, Creative Director and designer of handheld art, Afro City is a space where a collective of African and/or Descendants of American Slaves sell their crafts. I also met a Master Carpet designer working on a wearable art piece. If you're looking for a getaway in the city of Los Angeles, visit the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Mall for a unique mall experience.

I look…read moreforward to looking around and finding so much, however, the staff is absolutely horrible. the lady up front is about as rude as a person can be, on her best days. literally every time I'm in there when she is, I hear here being rude to customers and see customers leave angry , annoyed and let down. The guy in front of me today had a terrible experience and left unsatisfied and frustrated and then unfortunately I was called to her register and couldn't even get through the transaction with her. I just walked out and left the $50 or so in merchandise on the counter. this is the second time I personally have had a bad experience with this team, which Isn't something I'm used to. I am nice, understanding, patient and polite. I've worked in customer service and sales for a very long time and have literally never once had an experience with a customer where I felt the need to act the way that this staff acts regularly. the "leadership" (if that's what you would call it) is basically nonexistent. I'm a regular customer and donate A LOT to this location. I also spend a lot of money here, basically weekly. it's insane that I feel the need to write a review like this TO A PLACE THAT I FREQUENT. The fact that these people have "customer service" jobs is baffling. They'd be better suited as a prison warden or maybe New York cab driver. I love this store for the clothing, even though it's often a disastrous mess. unfortunately, I don't think I'll be back to this location anytime soon, but if you go, I'd avoid dealing with either of the middle aged and older female cashiers. they're absolutely horrible to deal with. i just spent about an hour and a half going through everything and putting it back nicely and even fixing stuff that was left a mess, just to be met with that lady's disgusting attitude and walk out with nothing. But the fact that this is how they treat a regular customer is disappointing. If I hated my job as much as her and the other lady, I'd look for a new one. I do feel bad for her and hope she finds a job where she isn't forced to deal with customers.
