GET OFF I-81, you are only 1 mile away! Smoker out front, smell of hickory wood smoke the perfect welcome. I've been here twice. The pulled pork, corn bread, barbecue beans and slaw were all traditional and delicious. Portions were ample. Two exceptional choices, the collard greens are outstanding, best I've ever eaten. And the catfish is fried tempura-style, not with the usual cornmeal batter. A nice variation from the familiar tastes of a classic barbecue restaurant. Try it. Service was friendly. The food in this place, tho not strictly Cajun, it is as savory as the Cajun food at one of the fantastic local restaurants in Baton Rouge and points south. We had tried to eat at this places a few times before, but came in too late or on a day rhey were closed or our plans got complicated and we ended up somewhere else; tonight we finally made it! I had the pork chops platter (with baked beans and mac and cheese) and boy was it delicious! The pork chops were very tasty and tender, the baked beans the best I've had! The mac and cheese was great too, but compared to everything else it seemed average. My son got the sausage platter (with mashed potatis and mac and cheese)... he loved it too. My wife had charbroiled chicken breast platter (with collard greens and baked beans), and complimented the collard greens so much that it was almost annoying. :-) The prices were very good (dinner for four, desert and drinks included, was less than $80 plus tip). Bottom line: we love the place and only regret that we found it in this our son's last year at VMI. We are definitively coming back before graduation! read more

Our first night in Lexington we decided to get BBQ and it was an excellent choice. We got the sampler platter, sides of beans and mac and cheese, corn bread and a whopping platter of onion rings. The brisket, chicken breast, and sausage weren't bad, three bbq sauces were exceptional. Pulled pork was a tad dry and had an odd consistency like broken rice rather than pieces of pulled meat but still with the sauces very good! Need to know: the 5$ order of onion rings is ginormous. Enough for a family of 4. The batter is fried to a perfect Dorito like crunch and I joke you not it's a full to go box piled high with onion rings! We phoned in our order for take out. We ordered the platter with sausage, chicken, baked beans, coleslaw, and baked potato, collard greens, broccoli, pulled pork sandwich and cornbread. There was no cornbread at all. The coleslaw was in a very, very small container. The pulled pork sandwich had no sauce. The broccoli was burned, the chicken was dry. Foothill Momma's offered a reliable lunch in a mom and pop style setting. The place was clean and the service was prompt. The diner has limited tables, but ole-fashioned counter space (complete with bar stools) helps add additional seating. I know it might sound odd that I opted for a BBQ joint when I am not a beef or pork eater, but until dining here, I'd found that most places had a pulled chicken option. Unfortunately, that was not the case at Foothill Momma's. While they offer a charbroiled chicken sandwich, they do not serve BBQ chicken. As such, I ordered the chicken strips and homemade fries instead. The fries were excellent and definitely tasted homemade. The chicken strips were good, but not the best I've ever eaten. Had I been hungrier, I would have also tried the mac and cheese, as it's made from redskin potatoes. As a side note, the menu states the collard greens are made daily, the potato chips are homemade and they restaurant made their meat smoker themselves. Hey, you have to give the joint credit for working hard! In the end, I'd definitely come again and try something different next time, perhaps the chicken sandwich with Mac and cheese. read more

When traveling along I-81 this is a great spot to pop in and get some good homemade food instead of the fast food chains. It's right off the interstate. The menu is pretty extensive for such a small place. We sat inside but you can also get carry out. The staff is very friendly. Service was quick and the food was hot. If I can give this place 0 stars, I would. The service was so terrible that I can't even comment on the food as we were practically turned away and ended up dining elsewhere. I was in town visiting a friend and came as part of a group of 5. We weren't acknowledged at all upon arrival and had to hunt down a staff member for attention. In the 30 minutes we were in the restaurant waiting for a seat or figuring out a way to get seated, I had one of the worst service experiences in a dining establishment. It was a combination of no service to hostile service from the staff (on simply trying to get seated!). What a disappointment. I've visited Lexington many times and almost always encountered what one would consider southern hospitality. This is southern hostility. Never coming back. read more

The appetizers were great for my 10 and 7 year old to share and you can add 2 sides for $3 so each of my kids could choose a side. The Mac and cheese and mashed potatoes were AMAZING! As a kid my babysitter used to make homemade potato chips for us all the time and it's one of those things you don't see too often. So, I admit I am inclined to give any place that does them well 5-stars off the bat. But, Foothill Mama's delivered in all aspects and I couldn't have been happier. From the service to the food it was a great experience. We came in about 40 minutes before closing. We were greeted and seated quickly. Made our orders and were eating in no time. The server was consistent in checking in and making sure we were happy. She was super pleasant and seemed to be happy to be there in spite of the fact that it was nearly quitting time. We ordered the Smokehouse Nachos and a Pulled Pork Platter with Collards and Mac and Cheese. So much food. More than enough to share between the 2 of us. In fact, we were picking at the leftover nachos for 2 days after. The nachos had cheese and maybe some sort of ranch on top. I don't know but whatever it was, it really hit the spot. Pulled pork was good - tender and flavor packed. The sauces were pretty good too but I would have liked a little more variety. A shout out of thanks to the ladies at Goodwill up the street for the recommendation, otherwise we wouldn't have ever found you! On our last day of vacation we decided to get take out. We were all tired from a full day of activities and just wanted a casual meal in our Airbnb. Foothill Mommas was recommended while I was shopping at Goodwill and was conveniently located a few buildings down. Looking at the menu they specialize in good old southern/soul food cooking. Count me in! The platters were inexpensive and included two sides + cornbread. Hubby and I both decided to get the pulled pork with sauce on the side (they have several to choose from) and different sides. His being mac and cheese and the southern potato salad, mine being collard greens and the mashed potatoes. I honestly don't know who enjoyed their meal more, him or I as we were both impressed! Not only were they absolutely completely homemade but delicious! If I had to pick which side I liked the most, I couldn't. Every last bite was mouthwatering. Even the sauce appeared to be made in house. Did I mention that our platters were enough for two meals each? And only $10.95 a platter! Well two meals for me since he has a huge appetite. After exiting the interstate and searching for a decent place to eat in Lexington we gave up. Fortunately, on the way out of town we stumbled upon this place and decided to give it a try. At first sight we were hesistant. We were the only two people inside at 11am. However, by the time our food arrived the place was packed - and for a good reason. This is the secret gem of the city. Yes. That good. Meanwhile, having only opened in January its still new and often unexplored. What a breath of fresh air it was to stumble upon a barbecue place that made nearly everything from scratch. Not just that but the flavor spoke volumes of how good these people can cook. It reminded me of another stand along barbecue place called the Pompous Pig in Anderson, South Carolina. My friend ordered the onion rings and let's just say they embarrassed the peer dishes you get at places like Chili's or Applebee's or even Texas Roadhouse. They were hand cut onions. They werent greasy and their batter was made on site, not to mention it was enough for a meal. I ordered the blackened catfish which was excellent. The blackening getting seasoning was phenomenal. The cornbread, sweet potato fries (which were hand cut) and potato chips (hand cut as well) were prepared so well that they could have been a meal of their own. My friend ordered the brisket and pulled pork platter and he was given a slab of brisket not a slice. The brisket was amazing and was tender with no fat. The pulled pork will hold its own too. In fact, after applying the sweet n spicy sauce the pork was heaven. His sides were mac n cheese ans collard greens. Again, top notch. By the time we finished our meal obviously we were full her the pecan squares looked so good that we ordered two slices to go. We weren't amazed by the pie possibly because there was no crust to it at all. Still it was much better than anything you'd buy at a grocery store. In closing, we were very impressed with the quality of barbecue and the sides that came with it and would highly recommend it. In addition the service rivals the quality of food. read more

I tried 2 sides for just $3, mac and cheese and collard greens. Both were good. Try the 3 BBQ sauces! Dan had the pulled pork, a small size was still large. He liked the house-made chips. We eat here as a family on trips between MD and NC. Today I'm traveling alone and have time for a review. Foothill Mama' has excellent meats. We've tried them all. Cole slaw, potatoes salad, collards are all home made. No box mac and cheese here. Fries are fresh cut and they offer sweet potato fries, fresh cut, too. Very clean facility, which is a must when traveling with kids. Our family's favorite barbecue in any state. A+ On my return trip today, I stopped in for early dinner. The catfish was excellent. Nicely breaded and crispy. An excellent option if,like me now, you've eaten a lot or beef and pork lately and want something different. Had the catfish on this trip south. Fantastic family owned BBQ joint just off of I-81 on the way into Lexington. Nearly everything was fabulous including the pulled pork and fried catfish. The homemade chips were worth the visit alone.
