My daughter is a college student without a car. We wired her money via Western Union and called to check the store location. My daughter walked twenty minutes there (in the heat) and was told the manager(s) who were able to distribute cash left at 2:00 p.m. So she walked another twenty minutes back to campus. We then spent well over an hour on the phone arranging an Uber ride, etc to take her to a different location. We should've been told about the 2:00 p.m. deadline when we called and all of this hassle could've been easily avoided. I called and spoke to one of the managers, Kathy, who was incredibly nice. However, we've spent a bunch of time and now incurred an expensive Uber ride due to the miscommunication on the part of this store. In my opinion , they should do something for her. read more

Their selection is not as good as the other stores here in town. The management of this particular store is incompetent. I would recommend skipping this store and just going to the one on Euclid Ave. read more

There food prices are very high . Prices are 2 to 6 dollars higher than other stores

After several unfriendly/unprofessional encounters at this Food City, I will be sure to go to surrounding stores even if it's not convenient! Other Food City store employees are accommodating when you forget your card & at the VA Avenue store, they give you a difficult time and want you to fill out an entirely new form. Yes, I should remember my card, but this Food City store has never been accommodating with this issue when I have forgotten. Not to mention, the employees chew gum, get on their cell phones, gossip about other employees and customers while checking you out. I believe they could benefit from a professionalism training! Produce selection at this location is better than any Food City in the area. The rest of the store keeps me at Kroger because there are always a half dozen or so items on my list that this store either is out of or doesn't carry. There is no natural foods section. Not even a cooler. read more

I find the people who work in this store extremely rude. I and others have waited at the deli counter for quite some while being ignored by employees who pretend they don't see you. I don't like the attitude of employees who think customers don't know how to read a sale sign and don't know what they are paying for. I live very close to this store but do not shop here often as there is always a conflict with my purchases. I will no longer even go occasionally. Absolutely irate with my experience at food city on va ave today. I normally do not review companies but this one really did me in. I went and bought some ground chuck today it looked fine. I went home to cook it and as soon as it hit the pan it had a disgusting smell. I call food city and they can't refund me but told me they will replace the meat. Instead I went back and got a frozen pizza and some ranch, I didn't want to chance the meat again and my kids was hungry. I go home to make the pizza and get the ranch out. I no I should have checked the date before leaving, that was my fault, however I opened it and it smelled sour. I checked the date and it was dated for August 2016. I called back down there and once again they did nothing I will never shop at a food city again, this isn't the first time getting bad products from there! I would much rather drive 15 miles to a Kroger or walmart! read more

I am not a person who likes to discredit others when they have had their own experiences but I myself have lived in the Bristol area less than 4 minutes away from this store for going on 15 years. I have had to return roughly 4 items in that time. Once when the product was out of date and there was a smell. I like to buy the deals where the product is marked TODAY ONLY. Those are often the discounted items normally 15 dollar cuts of meat you can get for 5 to 6. Slap them on a grill and they are delicious. I have never gotten anything from that store. I could not return with complete ease. No questions asked. I am old school 45 Years old and I would say skilled in the art of diplomacy. I simply walked to the clerk counter or the managers station told them the problem and it was like dealing with my southern grandmother. "Don't worry honey go and get you another one. I will take this one." The exchange could not have been easier...! Now some might say that was not my experience like the gal who gave one star. I also occasionally go to Kroger or Walmart because they too have good deals. Some great products. Those lower marks from people they have their right to speak their experience. I have to stand up for Mr. Parker whom I have personally witnessed walking around observing his stores absorbing the experience of the people taking great care to take care of the details. I see his commitment and concern to do the job right. They have always taken care of me. Even when I dropped a Gallon of Mayfield in the parking lot. I was ticked i did but one of the amazing kids that worked for Food City saw me and as I was collecting the plastic had ran to the back gotten the same yellow gallon and returned with a new one. I was impressed. Sometimes people have bad days at work some have bad days at home and it is easy to take it out on the little things the little people. I am always kind to people first if they are mean with me I give that back. Anyway, I just wanted to say I am impressed with the new store the staff and the people that work at Food City. I grew up in Northwest NC and living near the Bi-LO brand stores. I am excited as Food City will improve the Bi-LO stores and bring a higher quality to that old worn out brand. The staff at the new Virginia avenue store which was one of the oldest stores in the chain now as modern and sophisticated as any in the country. I never thought of being proud of my grocery store now I am. I bring my family mother brothers sister etc in the store and they are impressed. We are lucky to have a store chain that cares about the community. I still think their pricing is a bit high but so is the price of oil that is just business. It is not personal. Now if we can get Trump to put the squeeze on those JA's and get them to lower their prices a bit we could eat for a reasonable price again. No one thinks about what the price of oil does to the cost of food. You should...! I feel bad for the young lady with the bad experience. Not sure why I do probably because mine has been so different at that store over the 15 years I have bought goods there. I did come across a high-quality brand ( forget the name ) of a cream cheese and jalapeno dip that I noticed when I opened the package the expiration date was that very day. I gave it the sniff test and took a chance and ate it. I happen to know about bacterial growth in food. I had picked it in the area where the SABRA was. It was NOT SABRA. It took me 3 days to eat it. I suffered no ill effects. It was delicious in fact. I guess my only wish had I noticed the expiration date that I would not have paid full price for it. If you knew the food industry you would know how hard it is to keep up with everything. I think the advent of the self-checkout... WHICH I REFUSE TO USE ....might be limiting the number of staff in grocery stores and it may cause a few items to be missed. Or the fact that vendors will sneak outdated product into cases to slip them through for sale instead of pulling them. These things happen. I come from the world of pet foods and have been around that world for 20 years. I understand a great deal about the food industry. My point is people do the best they can in the circumstances of life. I personally think that Food City is doing the best they can with that said. I feel they do as good a job as any food supplier in the country. We are lucky to have them. I am sure if the young lady had simply brought back the meat even if partially cooked. Food City would have given an exchange or full refund. Maybe a new person was there not as experienced as another might have been. I have never seen or known them do the wrong thing...? I have brought back bags with a few fruit rotten or a potato or two bad and never had a problem. They do a great job in my world. I give them 5 stars. read more
