If I could give it 0 stars I would. I had a horrible experience first of all the food I ordered took an hour to come out. But the lady next to me who ordered the exact same thing got her food first and was seated way after I arrived. I had to ask for a refill as the waiter passed me by. When I told them it's been an hour all he said was the cook didn't come today. It wasn't packed when we got there but afterwards they had tables open but no one was seated til they complained. My advice is go somewhere else unless you want to wait an hour for your food. There's plenty of choices in downey to eat so pick accordingly. read more

We just left Fonda Maria's for breakfast. The food was pretty good, but our server was lacking heavily. The other servers were very nice to the customers and went over and greeted them and checked on them several times , our server never came back and checked on us, and then he brought our bill in the end. If you like your chilaquiles spicy then this is the place to get it. I ordered red chilaquiles and it was delicious. Crispy chips, spicy salsa and it was top off with sour cream and cheese. Completely satisfied!!! I live in LB and drove all the way to Fonda Maria based on how pictures looked on yelp. Showed up right when then opened and were immediately greeted with a welcoming attitude. Restaurant was following Covid guidelines and seating outside was very pleasurable. Now for the food.... it was just as mom would cook it, DELICIOUS! My dad is a bit particular with Mexican food and he was in awe of the quality and the taste of our traditional breakfast dishes. I ordered Chilaquiles (they're a bit spicy) and dad had Machaca con Huevos with handmade tortillas. Overall, food and service is A+. I would definitely recommend and drive to this place more often. read more

You can always judge a Mexican restaurant by its hot sauce. This place for sure has a really great "green" sauce. We ordered the chilaquiles and it was delicious , but beware, that hot sauce is killer! It's slightly over the enjoyable scale, and it's addicting. The plate was served piping hot, which is excellent, and as it cooled, so did the sauce. Overall, the space design is really busy, and they have an overwhelming menu, but I would definitely go back just to support this hardworking, loving family - they feel like your uncles/aunts from Mexico that are slightly older and still cool. Unfortunately The burrito was good, BUT I asked for no onions and cilantro which it seems they put a lot off. Idk if they do wet burritos de mole or cause i asked they made it happen which I appreciate, but due to all the onion I'm unable to enjoy it and found a teal stick inside my burrito which I came across when I first cut it. I love going here with my daughter. She has been going here for a long time and I can see why. They have excellent food as well as customer service. The wife and son have always been personable with us maybe because they recognize my daughter that goes often so they ask how she has been. We have ordered the Poole, chilaquiles, and ham with scrambled eggs which have all been delicious. The green chilaquiles are a little bit too spicy for me personally but tasty. I'm not too much of a coffee drinker but enjoy thier café de olla. I've even brought home some of thier delicious salsa. read more

To the "business owner" who stated that I "unfortunately declined to pay" any additional charges for the side of rice is beyond me. After spending the amount of money that I did at your restaurant, why would i decline an additional 5$ for some rice. Please don't try and gaslight the situation with lies when in reality you should ask your employees who take the orders to learn the menu before working there. I specifically asked the guy if it came with rice and beans and after asking who knows how many other employees to make sure it was possible he CLEARLY said yes, it did. If you are looking for an authentic Mexican food restaurant, Fonda María is the place! The reason why I'm giving this restaurant a Two Star review is because I believe is disrespectful to treat customers differently. I went there with my boyfriend yesterday in morning. It was a busy Sunday morning and understood that they were taking a while to get our drink and food order, but everything changed when El Mandril, a popular LA radio host, arrived to the restaurant. He got there about 15 minutes after us, but service was faster for him. Servers welcomed him, took drink and food order even before they took ours. His table was given chips and salsa even before us and his food obviously arrived way before ours. I've been in customer service for a long, long time and you just don't do those types of things. I'm big on customer service and I can definitely say that I prefer service over quality if I'm planning to eat at the restaurant because it does not make any sense to eat at a place, where food is good but you just feel ignored. For management: If you do that special customer service to special guests, at least seat them in in the back, where other regular customers don't see. In regards to their food, I order chilaquiles and they were very good. Crispy, just the way I like them and salsa was delicious as well. The vibe is very homey, the food was delicious. I got huevos a la Mexicana and they reminded me of my moms cooking so definitely authentic. My friend got the enchiladas and they warned her they were spicy but she was fine with it. When she got her plate she couldn't eat the enchiladas because they were soooo spicy lol so if you like spicy spicy food this is definitely the spot for you.
