I booked an outdoor reservation here for a beautiful Friday evening dinner with friends. They have a really nice patio area and lots of space indoors but it seems on this evening most people opted for outdoors (and rightfully so). They are BYOB so bring some wine to enjoy with the delicious food! I opted for one of the pasta dishes that was on the specials menu that night: Spicy Squid Ink Linguine with Shrimp. It had a great flavor and you could tell that the ingredients are super fresh. Looked this place up online and decided to try it. Was a pleasant evening , so when we were offered outdoor seating we gladly took it . Pedro waited on our table and he gave us a run down of the specials. There were quite a few appetizer and entree specials . We picked 2 items from the Specials Meatballs in Marinara sauce - was cooked to perfection with a coating of cheese . The marinara had the perfect acidity and sweetness. Beet salad with goat cheese - Special - This was a good salad not a great one at that . Could have used more beets and a bit more vinaigrette . Halibut - Delia yes cooked Halibut sitting on a colorful bed of orzo cooked in a. Saffron cream sauce that was a treat to the eyes and plate . Grilled mustard crusted salmon served over mashed poataoes and grilled asparagus - Salmon was cooked crispy on outside flaky soft on the inside and the potatoes were creamy dreamy silky texture . Asparagus was tender and cooked just enough to snap Lara suggested Creme Brûlée or Gelato for dessert The flavors she recommended were one of a kind and the highlight of our meal . First time at the Focacceria, BYO, we chose to sit inside since it was muggy out and it was pretty intimate. The outdoors section was nice and open for a fall night. Granted, it was a last minute reservation but ... we were led upstairs into a small, little room packed with 4 tables. It was so loud we literally could not hear each other. Food was very disappointing. Veal Marsala very thick and chewy. The Calamari Sweet and Spicy was dried out and had to chew forever. We did not eat it. The Salomon with a mustard sauce would've been nice, had they put the sauce on the salmon, not under a piled mess of mashed potatoes and 4 asparagus. When I brought it up to waited he said "it's a dry mustard" What??! Side of Penne, $12, also sat under heat lamp and needed more sauce. Stay downstairs and make a reservation in advance. Focacceria, located in a historic home that's a little off the beaten path in a quiet neighborhood in Basking Ridge township, offers diners the option of seating on a shaded patio for outdoor dining when the weather cooperates and an intimate dining room for indoor dining when it does not. The indoor dining experience, with the cozy dining room and white tablecloths, feels somewhat more elegant than the outdoor dining experience with the trade-off of sitting so close to other diners that you can't help but be a part of their conversations. Service seemed a bit uneven with our server stopping by the table to ask us if we were ready to order within seconds after we were seated by the hostess, then walking past our table repeatedly without making eye contact over the next 15 minutes. The menu features a variety of Italian and Italian-inspired dishes -- which range from traditional pastas like rigatoni bolognese, penne, and gnocchi pesto to grilled skirt steak, mustard-crusted salmon, and Asian-inspired sesame crusted ahi tuna. My dining companion and I started off our meal by splitting the Tricolore Salad ($13), which was just large enough for the two of us to share. I opted for the Orecchiette with broccoli rabe and chicken ($26), served with cherry tomatoes, garlic and red chiles. My dining companion ordered the Branzino special ($35). Both of us really enjoyed the freshness and flavors of our meals. One key issue for me is that the chef seems to enjoy freelancing. Dishes may be served with slight variations from the menu descriptions. My Orchiette was delivered to the table by the runner topped with grated parmesan cheese, even though I specifically asked the server for it without cheese, and had to be sent back to the kitchen after I had to flag our server down for assistance when the runner just responded to my complaint with a shrug. This has the potential to cause problems for people with food allergies -- so be sure to make your server aware of any specific requests when ordering. This is our go to special occasion restaurant! The outdoor seating is always really nice during the spring and summer time. The food always has great flavor and quality ingredients. Every table gets bread and an oil/pesto dip to start. For starters we got the zucchini flowers and peach salad. Both items had interesting, but delicious, ingredient pairings. For dinner we got the orecchiette, risotto, and penne with eggplant. The orecchiette had a good garlic sauce, but the broccoli rabe was a little on the bitter side. What a lovely dinner spot! Their outdoor set-up is so nice and spacious with their patio area and large tent on the lawn. I came for dinner with family, and we had a wonderful and comfortable meal here. Even though we sat on the patio facing the road, it didn't feel noisy at all. For dinner I ordered the Seafood Ravioli with Asparagus. It only came with six raviolis but were so delicious with the sauce (I was almost tempted to slurp it)! My family also enjoyed their meals; everyone was happy and satisified. I've been to Foccacheria multiple times, and I can honestly say that each time has been consistently as good as the last -- from their five-star service to each incredible dish -- from start to finish. It tasted like they had just boiled the pasta and plopped it onto a plate and served it. My friend's clams and pasta were gritty and had no sauce or seasoning either. Even worse the clam shells were all cracked and shards were throughout her dish. The owner or head manager seemed nice, but our waiter was grumpy and sarcastic. It didn't seem like he cared if we were there or not, so we didn't feel comfortable saying anything. Plus they all looked stressed and exhausted; we don't like to stress them out more. My wife asked for a specific entree but "hold" the seafood, they eagerly and happily replaced the shrimp with chicken and it was scumptious. I asked for a recommendation and the suggestion of the black linguine... the sauce for "lick the bottom of the plate" good. And when I saw the option I did not choose - all I could think about was how delicious it looked for next time! To finish it off - 2 flavors of home made gelato. Delightful. And a small cordial of sambuca and coffee beans - yum. It was too cold, but the outdoor seating in the summer looks amazing as well. I visited this location for the first time for a graduation dinner outdoors. I was pleasantly surprised by the beautiful outdoor atmosphere but what really made me write this review was the A+ class service. The entire staff really took care of my entire family, from grandma to younger kids. My experience at Focacceria on Easter Sunday was anything but average. So, you can probably imagine my surprise when I saw it has a three star rating. From the service to the food, everything in my opinion was pretty great. First things first, I loved the ambience. It looks like an old house that has been converted into a restaurant. It is clean, bright, and open. I especially loved the minimalistic yet dainty feel to it. It felt upscale and proper so be sure to dress accordingly. Service was great. We had two waiters who helped our group simultaneously. Both were friendly, courteous, and attentive from start to finish. I would definitely give 5 stars on service alone. All of the food I tried was pretty great. Found this amazing restaurant while attending a golf tournament not too far away. My two children were in the mood for Italian so we began our search. It was between this location and a well known chain down the way and we decided to support local and boy are we glad we did. The service was amazing, the food was fresh and so delicious. The only thing I didn't notice ahead of time is it is BYOB, which is no issue or fault of the facility, it was mine for not realizing it ahead of time. The lack of a cocktail did not deter from the perfect meal we all had. I would certainly recommend this location to anyone in the area. We will be back when we head that way again. read more

My son gave my husband and I a gift card for Christmas and what a great gift it was. From the moment we arrived the hostess was super friendly she sat us right away, then our servers were very attentive. The food was amazing, the spicy / sweet calamari phenomenal! I had the swordfish special and my husband had the bolognese pasta we enjoyed every bite. Area of opportunity- Time Management ... Christmas Eve, made a reservation - with my credit card ($50.00 cancellation per person if we didn't show) for a prefix menu at 7:45pm. We arrive and the line is literally down to the curb. The restaurant was over an hour behind for reservations. The hostess told me I would only have a 20 minute wait when I asked her if that was the truth she told me it maybe longer. The hostess was too inexperienced to be put in that situation - everyone online was angry - saying rude things, grumbling "Merry Christmas" as they canceled their reservations and stormed out the door. Luckily I was able to find us a table elsewhere in town - but just some ideas ... if you're overbooked on Christmas Eve Rather than have your guests stand outside in the cold: 1. Be hospitable - this is your wrong, make it right - come outside and offer them hot chocolate, coffee, tea even some Christmas cookies etc 2. Provide alternatives - offer your guests menus to review - if anyone would like to take food to go, let them place an order and provide a discount for inconvenience- it would save you time to turn the table and not ruin your customers Christmas Eve 3. Communicate ! Come outside with your guests, provide explanations, make small talk - it reduces anger and makes time go by much quicker! Poor organization , poor time management.... read more
