    Oyster poboy

I ordered the Oyster poboy and was disappointed. Very few oysters in the sandwich. The decor is awesome but the sandwich came up short. Service was walk up order and pickup.

We love this fish place. Nice monthly offer of buy one meal receive one for free. Can't beat the price or the food. Counter order & pick up. Self service of drinks and condiments but all areas kept clean, well stocked & fresh. Tiki Hubby always get Jambalaya Catfish 2 large fried fillets on top of white rice coveted with a sausage shrimp jambalaya. So good i always sneak a bite. I ordered the whole fried tilapia no breading comes with beans and rice 2 hush puppies. The fish was cooked perfectly crispy on the outside and creamy white flaky fish.

This place was really good, and I'll definitely come back as prices were decent. I ordered the 4 shrimp/1 catfish plate that came with fries and. 2 hush puppies. I wish the hush puppies were bigger because they were good but done in one small bite. The catfish wasn't overly salty and had flavor. The shrimp was really good as well. The fries were just basic, so I have nothing to review on them. You order at the front, and then you pick up the food when your buzzer goes off. I'll come back when I'm in the area. Parking is very limited as well.

Update: Oct 27, 2025 Went to eat lunch here and ordered Caddo plate, consist of tilapia fillet and shrimp. Flakey, buttery Tilapia and regular size shrimp sauteed with their special seasoning topped with a creamy cheese & pico de Gallo sauce and served over a bed of basil white rice. It's delicious. Friendly service and well decorated place.

    Great decor.

It's been awhile since I reviewed Flying Fish and I gotta say it the menu just keeps growing. I had a hankering for fries shrimp so I ordered that with pickled green tomatoes instead of the standard fries. I got six big well cooked shrimp, green tomatoes with a nice tang mixed with sweetness and two hush puppies for &13.95. Such a tasty lunch! Y'all come check The Flying Fish out!

Flying Fish comes through again. Anyone whose spent time on and around lakes and the Gulf Coast will recognize this decor. Think bait shop, seafood market, waterfront/backwoods cafe. Shannon Wynns chain of restaurants have been highly successful over the years and I have to think, the authentic feel has something to do with it . However, make no mistake,no gimmicks here. Straight up good food including awesome fried catfish and shrimp, gumbo,po boys, grilled fish and veggies. If seafood isn't your bag, they grill a mean throwback basic burger. I must advise that if you haven't been ... Go! *What happened to my other reviews of this Location?

Fried shrimp platter with 2 hushpuppies and fries

Nice family friendly casual restaurant. Busy on a Saturday night with an almost full parking lot. The line moved fast and the coaster lit up fast to let us know that food was ready for us to pick up the tray at the counter. The crunchy fish tacos were different than what we are used to but tasty and stayed crunchy under the coleslaw and pico de gallo toppings. The shrimp platter ranged from average to large-sized shrimp. The fries were hot and crispy and not greasy The decor is lots of fisherman photos on the wall with their big catches and a fun wall of Billy Bass plaques by the bathrooms, donated by patrons in exchange for a catfish platter. It was nice to see those plaques recycled and appreciated as an impressive collection. For as busy as it was, the restaurant was quiet enough for dinner conversation with plenty of booths and tables. Attentive staff cleared the tables quickly and kept everything tidy We enjoy this place for our seafood date nights for its value and varied menu options.

I absolutely love that fish camp style restaurants are trending again! It brings on a lot of nostalgia for me from childhood. We took our daughter after her Christmas party at church and there were smiles all around! Our food was piping hot and delicious. I thoroughly enjoyed my bowl of gumbo. My husband ordered the grilled redfish that was served with grilled squash, beans and rice. It was very fresh and clean tasting. The service here is tremendous and the staff are over the top friendly. The restaurant has the typical decor of pictures of fisherman showing off their catches all over the wall. It is very family friendly as well. The location is very conveniently located to our youngest daughter's home so I am quite sure that the delicious food here will "lure" us back in!

At first, I was a little hesitant because the menu is fairly small, but after my meal, I can see why. Every dish we ordered was absolutely a 10/10. I had the chicken with greens and shrimp fried rice, along with the fried green tomatoes and cornbread. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and perfectly prepared. I honestly don't have a single negative thing to say about either the food or the service. This was an amazing dining experience, and I will definitely be back. Highly recommend!

I had high hopes for this location because I absolutely love Radici, and everyone has been…read morerecommending Roots to me. Unfortunately, it just didn't live up to the expectations I had. I do want to start with the positives. Our waiter was fantastic. He was very attentive, explained the menu thoroughly, and provided excellent service. The food also came out incredibly fast and piping hot, which is becoming rare these days. We started with the cornbread, and it was easily a 10/10. It was worth every bit of the $12. We ordered the fried chicken, greens, shrimp fried rice, biscuits, and hot water cornbread. The fried chicken was crispy and tender, but it lacked seasoning. I'd give it a 7/10. They served it with a house hot sauce, but surprisingly it had no heat and almost no flavor. I even asked the person I was dining with if they tasted anything because it was like pouring sauce on the chicken without changing the flavor at all. The greens were just okay on their own, but once we added the vinegar they became amazing. That made me wonder why the vinegar isn't incorporated into the greens from the start. The hot water cornbread had virtually no flavor. The shrimp fried rice was cooked really well, but it had an unexpected Caribbean-style seasoning that threw me off. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't what I was expecting, and it made it hard to fully enjoy. The biscuits were probably the biggest disappointment. They were dry and hard. One thing I also noticed is that, for a family style restaurant where you're encouraged to order several dishes to share, the tables feel too small. Once all the food arrived, there wasn't much room left, and even packing up our leftovers was awkward because of the lack of space. One standout that deserves recognition was the iced tea. It had what tasted like a subtle hint of mint and was incredibly refreshing. Easy 10/10. From the cuts of chicken we received, it appears they break down and fry whole chickens, which is perfectly fine. However, at $56 for a fried chicken that lacked seasoning, I found the price hard to justify. Maybe the cooking method or oil contributes to the cost, but I expected much more flavor for that price. Overall, I'd rate my experience a 7.5/10. Would I come back? Yes. I'd be willing to give Roots another chance and try something different from the menu. But when I hear Southern food, I expect bold seasoning and comforting flavors, and that's the one area where this meal really fell short.

There is ample space between tables so you don't feel cramped. There are TVs on the walls but it does not feel like a typical sports bar. The vibe is upscale and the restaurant was very clean. We started with the homemade biscuits and they were excellent. The proceeds go to charity so placing this order was no-brainer. The biscuits were light and airy, not dense at all. The jam and butter were the perfect accompaniment. Those biscuits are winners! Everyone should order and help the charity. I had the spicy chicken and waffles and it was excellent. The chicken was indeed spicy but the honey helped cool me off. The chicken was tender, the waffle was light but could have been hotter. If you order this dish, you will need a glass or two of cold ice water! The wife had shakshura and loved it. She got some toast on the side for dipping. The grits on the bottom were perfectly cooked. Her only complaint was the egg was supposed to be runny and it was firm. The kid had sweet potato pancakes but ended up filling up on the biscuits. Overall, food was 5 star and really enjoyable. The prices are very reasonable. The reason for 4 stars and not 5 is that our server, who was pleasant enough, was not very efficient. I am not sure what the problem was but her head was in the clouds. We would ask for something, she would say ok, and then she would disappear and forget to bring what we asked for. This happened more than once, more than twice, and maybe three times. It became a running joke at our table, what would the waitress forget this time? Other than spotty service, we liked this restaurant very much and we definitely would return if we are the Star District again.

For lunch, I had the spicy chicken and waffles with a side of goat cheese grits and they did not disappoint. Strong showing - not my favorite local chicken and waffles but a strong entry into the conversation. The grits were cooked to perfection and very flavorful.
