Finding Flowers Bakery & Cafe has been a true discovery for me, in every sense of the word. I come to the Layhill Shopping Center for a lot of my needs - bank, gas, gym, 7-11, Subway - because it's a stone's throw away from my house, and I thought I knew the place inside and out. But when I was pulled up next to the Sunoco garage to check my tire pressure, I looked up to get the hair out of my face, and what did I see beyond my bangs - a bakery that I'd never seen before! I swear I saw a halo around the building and a choir singing in the background. It was a beautiful sight! I was in a rush that day, but I finally had time to stop by at Flowers on Saturday morning. It was a humble space - just three tables, a display refrigerator, and a counter with more display cases of baked goods. I wondered to myself, "How many people know about this place?" It's hidden behind the gas station, so you can only see it if you're looking for it. But even at 9am on a Saturday, there was a steady stream of people coming in for a cup of coffee, a croissant or a cake pick-up. Maybe I'm not the first to discover this place :) The cakes, pastries and other baked goods looked expertly made and delicious. Single cake slices are $3.50, a whole cake ranges from $17 - 40, I think. There were at least 5 cakes in the refrigerator that were ready for pick-up. The counter was stocked with all kinds of birthday candles, tea bags, etc. So if you're ashamed of telling your friends that you got your cake from Giant, discover Flowers with me! And if you're in the neighborhood and need a quick breakfast, give their breakfast sandwiches a try, or pick up a pastry to go! I'll be back here for sure. read more

The mango mousse cake here tastes phenomenal, and the pineapple decoration on top is pretty awesome! There's a pretty decent sized selection of cakes, but the nice thing is that it seems that the selection is pretty specialized- there aren't any plain cakes here. The owner is also super friendly and helpful. I just wish they were a bit cheaper. I get that premium cakes demand a premium pricing, but the price point that they set is pretty expensive, at least to me. If you've got the money to spend on it, though, it's well worth it! read more

This is my go to bakery if I'm in need of a birthday cake the day of. It's tucked away in a corner of a shopping plaza. So can be a bit hard to find. The bakery isn't fancy at all and looks family owned but the cakes are very good and on the pricier side. They also have pastries as well but I mainly go there for their pre-made cakes. So far I have gotten their tres leches, strawberry shortcake, and mango cake (which seemed to be their popular one, since they have pics of it posted all over thier store front). They are all good. Cake is very moist and the icing is not too sweet at all (which I love). They will also write a message on the cake if you want them to. Very fast service. In and out in few mins. read more

Feel so disappointed with the quality of Pina Colada cake I ordered. They told me it will be done at 8am the next day and I was excited to pick it up as early as I can. It was my favorite cake so I ordered it for myself, the whole cake. When I received the cake and open it up as soon as I got home. The cake is frozen like an ice cream cake, and icy. That was unexpected, because I plan to cut a piece to eat right away but it's all icy. I let it cool down in the refrigerator for couple hours, then tried again, the cake melt good as wet as it been soaking in water. Texture still look like a cake but it's wet, taste a bit watery. Whole watery cake to myself, I'm feel so sad for my favorite cake. I don't recommend to make cake order here to anyone. The cake is good if you buy it in the café and already displayed there but not order because quality is unknown so that is no guarantee, and that's why I'm disappointed. Must haves: Tres Leches Cake, chocolate marble mousse cake. Tiramisu and the macaroons. They have a wide variety of cakes and pastries. No so many pies. They have amazing gelato year round. The mango mousse cake is a must -try! It's the best seller for a reason! We have been loyal customers for a while, the entire family loves it. I wanted to commend Flowers Bakery on its professionalism. My husband and I ordered our wedding cake from Flowers. We provided the decorative ribbons and the custom penguin cake topper (hand made by my brother and was personally flown in from Asia) before the wedding. Be mindful that part of the cake topper groom penguin's tie broke off on the flight over and we were planning on just letting it be, BUT to our surprise, Flowers Bakery FIXED it for us and it was PERFECT! I went to this place one Saturday morning when my boyfriend and I were looking for breakfasty-items after the regular fast food joints start serving lunch. I only noticed it when we had to put air in our tires at the gas station that blocks the view from the street. I was impressed with the large assortment of pastries and professionally decorated cakes and pies. When we went to pay, I was expecting $8 or $9, but we only paid $4 for the both of us! I was flabbergasted at how inexpensive it was, especially because everything in this area is overpriced (compared to rural PA where I'm originally from). These pastries are definitely not the prepackaged, store-bought, preservative-laden wafers you may (or may not) be used to. They're nice and big and they aren't so sweet that you feel like brushing your teeth afterwards. They're absolutely scrumptious with a nice hot cup of coffee, and definitely worth every penny. I think I'm going to have to try their tres leches cake, which I've noticed is very popular in this area. 4 Stars Will return happily. read more

I'm a big fan of this awesome hole in the wall, literally. I found out from my friend and I've been trying to come here and order from here when I get the chance. It's tucked away in a shopping center off of Layhill Rd behind the gas station. As I'm writing this, I don't even think you can see it from Layhill Road or Bel Pre Road. Anyway, it's a place you have to check out if you're in the area or even out of the area. You can call in orders ahead of time if you're requesting a special cake or a larger cake. When you walk in though, they have a refrigerated counter showcase full of good. I honestly have not had their pastries, but I've sampled many of their cakes. My personal favorites are the White Chocolate Mousse and the Mango Mousse. The texture on the White Chocolate is phenomenal. It's not dry at all and the mousse and the "meat" of the cake go perfect together. It's not too sweet and it's just that darn good. On the flip fruity side, the Mango Mousse is really good if you're into mangoes. The decor and glaze are amazing and just like the other cake, the taste is great. Prices are reasonable and not over-priced, at least in my opinion. They have slices you can buy too, so you don't have to get an entire cake. let me just say we use to have the best bakery ever right in Aspen Hill and those of you who have lived anywhere in Montgomery county knew Radfords. I have 5 girls and they made every birthday cake for years, not ordinary ones, Mickey Mouse, Raggedy Ann and Andy, Snow White, etc and I didn't have to take out a second mortgage on the house. Housers in Twinbrook was great too especially for Special cakes. I went to Flowers because my neighbor was having a gathering so I decided to bring a German Chocolate Cake, they didn't have one so I got something else. I could not believe the prices. I finally decided on one that would do and paid over $55.00 for the cake. This shoppe is way too expensive. Now before anyone screams I was married to a baker, not just any baker his. Family owns Otterbeins and Simons in the Baltimore area, very well known look them up in the Newspaper articles or see their sought after sugar cookies in The Giant. They have a devoted following. A cake costing that much would be a two tier Wedding, Christening etc one. A young fellow waited on me very nice but there was a woman n the store giving some poor man a very hard time. My Belgian fiance and I enjoy a good patisserie treat regularly and this was not too far from where we live. For our first visit, we got: 1. Fruit tart (3/5) The fruit and custard was fresh and not too sweet. The custard flavor and texture was decent. This is a good fruit tart for the price. 2. Mango raspberry mouse cake (2/5) The cake portion was a bit thicker than it needs to be which lends the overall mouthfeel to be on the drier side. The mousse flavor and texture was appropriate and not particularly remarkable. It was not too sweet either which I'm quite happy about. My favorite part was actually the top raspberry glaze which is tart and bright. I enjoyed the cake mainly because I like a simple fruit-forward cake. 3. Big palmier (4/5) This is the best item out of all the things we got. It's not too sugary and the buttery flavor was good. What would make this palmier better is if there was slightly more butter between each layer. It would make it slightly less dense and flakier. I could definitely come back for more of these when they are fresh. 4. Spinach and cheese Danish (2.5/5) We ate these in a hurry as we were both hungry so I don't think it was a fair assessment since they were not warmed. Don't know when these were made and the pastry was not flaky at this point. The savoriness was balanced with the sweetness of the dough as you chewed it. Consensus: It's a convenient place for us to swing by for some decent quality pastry that is priced well. We would come back to try their other items. read more

The cakes are good, but if you want fast, efficient service...this is not the place. This is the second time I had a long wait to pick up an order. The staff is okay, but the customers are half-baked fruitcakes. They can't speak English; they can't park legally, and they take a half-hour to order a cake using photographs and sign language while their cars block traffic out front. I believe the man in front of me was a zombie who ordered a cake with brain icing. If you want a cake, pack your patience and plan on a half-hour to pick up your order. My favorite is their marble chocolate mousse (not sure if that's the name of it but it's white chocolate and chocolate mixed). I've always been a fan of flan cakes, but the only place that had good ones (in my opinion) was all the way down in Arlington, VA so as a resident of Silver Spring, I would only get them about once a year. Fortunately for my sweet tooth, and unfortunately for my waistline, I discovered Flowers Bakery and have been I'm a HUGE fan of their flan cakes since. My favorite is the mixed fruit one, with the apricot one placing a close second, but they are all delicious. My sister is a fan of their pecan pie slices and I have tried their grand marnier chocolate cake, which was equal parts dense and moist. This is our go-to bakery for special occasions now.
