We ordered the daily special of burnt ends with potato salad and beans and the fried shrimp with fries and slaw. The coleslaw is the BEST I have ever had!! Burnt ends were juicy while still having crispy edges. The shrimp were huge and fresh. While ambiance is that of a backroad diner, the food and service gives this place 5 stars. Wow, wow, wow. Home cooking at its finest! The wait was a little long on a Saturday at lunchtime but well worth the wait. Friendly service with a smile and Ms. Florida herself stopped by to say hello and talk to our 9 year old who tried frog legs for the first time. I have been visiting/living with my parents in the Lake Livingston area, but we only recently learned about this BBQ place in the region- what a bummer! We should have known about this place since my family and I love checking out family-owned businesses in the Lake Livingston area. Once you enter the restaurant, it gives off a dinner, homemade-style vibe. The staff greets you immediately with a smile and seats you at an available and open table. You can order your drink immediately while you look over their menu to pick your food. It was my first time here, but my parents have been to this place like 2-3 times already, and they already know what they want to eat for lunch, while I, on the other hand, am open to trying new food and sharing food, so I did just that. I have finally found a place in Livingston, Texas that is not fast food related that I'm looking forward to going back and trying more of their foods. This place has too many options. If you have a hard time making up your mind, this place will make you go nutty. The prices did not make my frugal meter squeal, so that's an added bonus. This place is not open every day, so make certain you check their days of service. As of the time of this review, they were open Thursday through Saturday. I showed up on a Saturday and saw they offered Saturday only menu items...so I had to order a couple of those. Burnt ends and banana pudding will be my Saturday only options. They even have a low priced seafood platter...so let's do that one as well. I'm not about to try to convince you to eat here! Just show and see for yourself. I've never had frog legs on a seafood platter before. Portion sizes are definitely in proportion to pricing. Burnt ends was seasoned well and moist. The dipping dish with the broth brings the ends to another level. The banana pudding IS NOT from a box...that's definitely homemade. You can tell the difference in taste and texture. Just know this...I asked Miss Florida to come out the kitchen and give me a hug. She was nice enough to do just that. I'll definitely be back to this place often because they have so many other menu items I want to try. Word of caution: Getting the lemonade confused my taste buds. I was expecting a yellow drink. What came to my table was a pinkish drink...so I expected pink lemonade. Maybe that lemonade was a guava lemonade...or maybe a peach lemonade...my taste buds couldn't decipher my sweet drink. After a day of rock hunting at Johnsons, we decided to try Florida's Kitchen. Boy were we in for a treat. Friendly staff, and a cute little girl named Parker, Florida's grandbaby held the door for us, she's so cute.The menu was direct and offered different Texas style favorites. I chose the BBQ chicken plate which came with two sides, so I chose a salad and mixed greens. The salad came, and was huge for a side salad (which is great). We both were surprised at the size of the salads. Homemade ranch dressing and homemade thousand island. Then my friend let out a hoot when she saw the food coming. WOW.. The BBQ chicken was huge with a bowl of tasty mixed greens in pot liquor and a big slice of Texas toast which was buttered and had some spices on it. My friend had 3 chicken tenders which took up half the plate, and fries and gravy. We had to ask for boxes to take home and we ordered desserts, she had pecan pie and I ordered a slice of carrot cake which had to weigh 5 pounds. OMG!!! I you have not eaten at Florida's then you are missing a treat!!! The food is great!! The staff is very friendly and you get a good amount of food. Don't let the appearance fool you!! This place will not disappoint. We both had the fried chicken lunch special and it is the best chicken I have ever had. The sides were good too. Get the greens and you must try a piece of cake. We had the Floridas special platter (something like that). It was definitely a generous portion. Enough for my husband and I to eat there and take home... our server was friendly and tended to our needs. He made sure our drinks stayed full. I also enjoyed the gospel music playing in the restaurant, it made us comfortable as that type Of music is up our alley!! Now, the reason why I gave this place a 3 star is because the Food was ok. I like my food really hot and it was not. I loved the catfish though. It was cooked hard and the cornmeal was crisp to perfection. There isn't too many places or people that can cook it like that.... I had the ribs. They were like eating beef jerky, dry and chewy. The sauce didn't add much flavor. So why the four stars? The catfish is amazing. Thick, juicy, tender fillets coated with the perfect ratio of cornmeal, flour and seasonings, then fried to a light golden brown. And the coleslaw was very good too. This was the most disappointing dining experience ever! Took my family there for a what i thought would be a great dinner and I was highly disappointed. From the waiter sitting us at a table in the back after I requested a table in the front all the way down to the server. They were rude and the food was horrible. To be black owned, this restaurant treated us as if were a burden rather than someone spending their hard earned money. After my experience I called to speak with the manager and that was experience was just as disappointing. She was argumentative and not willing to at least apologize. If you crave good food, cheap prices and healthy serving sizes you must try Florida Kitchen for lunch or dinner. I had their grilled shrimp. You get 10 and they're enormous and mouth watering. First time trying them out. I called and asked if the 1st picture on their Facebook page of the ribs in the tin pan was their "slab of ribs" for $25. Lady said, "Hold on, let me ask." Chicken fried steaks are normally large portions in Texas but holy cow mine was huge and good. This is home town cooking in a no frills place but you must drop by. There were 8 people in our group and no body left unsatisfied or hungry. The only sad part was when we got to the register to pay. We visit the Livingston, TX area several times a year. This visit we looked for a new place to eat lunch and found Florida's Kitchen. This restaurant is located in an old house. The front is run down and a dirty front door but the lot had a number of cars. Don't let the looks of the place turn you away. The basic menu items were BBQ and fish type entrees. We chose catfish. I had a small portion and partner had the regular. The small plate had four fillets and regular had five! The crust was light and very well seasoned and NOT greasy. The coleslaw was sweet and shredded quite fine along with other veggies in the slaw. The hushpuppies had kernels of corn inside and were nicely fried and sweet. The service was attentive. Stopped while passing through Livingston and reading the reviews. Food: was good if not great. I had the seafood platter and had enough to bring home. The fish and shrimp was delicious and tasted fresh. It was not greasy and fried perfectly. It also came with a skewer of shrimp, stuffed crab, frog legs (I substituted for fish), fries, hush puppies and two sides. My husband had the club which he said was very good. My sister in law the ribs which she said were not dry and very flavorful. Our server was very good but very busy. The only downside was their was a host that was loud and was just kind of weird. She greeted us after we stood at the door for a minute then continued to stare at her stand for several minutes. The place was about half empty so we wasn't sure what that was about. As we were there she was really loud and kept wiping her nose on her sleeve. This is why I just could not rate our visit as 5 stars. read more

First time here and I love this place. Small local appeal, super-friendly staff, open plan a visible kitchen. But the food: damned-near perfect. I had the catfish and baked beans. Both are AMAZING. Generally I prefer beer battered fish, but the corn meal batter is incredible here. Lightly rolled, expertly prepared, just the right consistency. Not sure of the tartar sauce is home made, but it seems that way. And the beans: perfect. Not too spicy, not too bland. Really hoping they give me a case of entertaining methane I can expel later.
