I first dicovered Richards in my Great Gumbo Quest. I am trying to taste Every Gumbo in the Beaumont area, and Richards Cafe (a Soul Food Joint a 10-min drive from my ship) was a must-try. I got a HUGE container of a greasy, reddish Gumbo with rice on the side. It was NOT good. WAY too greasy nasty flavor, and soft bones in the Gumbo so you're actually eating slow cooked bones. Fucking GROSS. Worst Gumbo ever, in my book. But whenever I asked my Black crew where they wanted lunch from, Richards was always the go-to. Hell, if they didn't like what was for lunch, they got take-out from Richards. This past weekend, when I bought lunch for my them, they all went for Oxtails at Richards. So I bought 3 orders of Oxtail (only available on weekends), with 2 sides, cornbread and a 32 oz Kool-Aid for them. $90!!! Every customer there (black and white) were there for the Oxtails. So if you're in Beaumont and are looking for good Soul Food, do NOT get the Gumbo, but everything else looks amazing. Get the Oxtails on the weekend, si my advice read more

Great soul/comfort food served from a steam table by very friendly staff. This being our first time the great lady behind the steam table explained the process and detailed any food we had questions about. I went with meatloaf, taters and gravy, lima beans, corn, and a roll. I received a large portion of flavorful, sweeter than expected lima beans, tender corn, and taters smothered in deep dark rich brown gravy. The roll was nothing special, I saw it pulled out of a bag of grocery bought rolls, I guess you can't make everything from scratch. There were a couple of surprises, I alluded to one of them above, lima beans that were substantially sweeter than expected and sweeter than I would prefer. The second surprise was on my wife's plate, her dressing was quite spicy, spicer than she could eat which worked to my favor...I like spicy. I would gladly return to Richards in the future. Driving through on our way to New Orleans from Los Angeles looking for a soul food spot and we may have found the best spot. You just don't get food this good - except at home - on the west coast. Rich flavors, freshly cooked and fast service. So glad to be here in real soul food country. And thanks to the fact that the sides were mostly meat free I was able to Indulge as well. Gumbo: deep flavor, really good. Cubion: catfish and sausage tomato stew over rice - flavorful, complex, and delicious. Mac and cheese - decent but we like our own better. Black eyed peas: delish with a few squirts of hot sauce. Okra and tomatoes - lovely spicy delish. Greens - yummy! One preference would be less salt for our table... that's our preference. I got the beef tips with rice and mac and cheese with another side of mustard greens and my husband got hamburger steak, with mashed potatoes, beans and corn ..everything was seasoned perfectly and it's not spicy like some reviews say..they give you large portions and I must say they have the best cornbread you'll ever put in your mouth!
